A Hair's Breadth: Finals - Lenzerheide DH World Cup 2016

Jul 10, 2016
by Nathan Hughes

So concludes a brilliant week in the high-altitude Swiss dirt... Half a decade since the Redcar Rocket, Danny Hart, claimed the top step at the muddy steeps of Champery, he finally muscled it again to achieve his first career world cup victory. Even the likes of the mighty AG and the G.O.A.T. didn't have the minerals to keep the Englishman at bay at he now charges forward into second place for the overall.

Overnight rain soothed conditions on the hill somewhat, but after lunch when the beeps began, riders were still doing their utmost to tame the endless rugged switchbacks that define the ironically named 'Straightline' course here in Lenzerheide. It was a track where every corner counted; control and precision was everything and very little room for error could be accommodated in a race where the word 'tight' does no justice. Less than a tenth of the second came to separate the top men and just 0.7 seconds would determine the female victor in one staggeringly close fought battle.

The countdown to the day has begun.
The final countdown... It's go time.

AG seemed totally relaxed pre race.
The morning of the big day is finally upon us and it's always amazing to see how calm and collected the World's fastest seem to be. AG smiles for the racing to come.

bigquotesI think this weekend I probably was a bit complacent... I didn't look hard enough at the track or consider enough lines I just stuck to the ones I found from first practice. After qualifying Browny told me there's loads of lines you're not doing that the others are doing, so I switched it up a lot. Having such a close margin is good - it tells me it's time to think about it more - it can be hard to stay motivated after a long time winning - Rachel Atherton - Trek

I really thought Aaron had held on for the win as Danny crossed the line, when I saw his time in green I was so happy for him, real lump in the throat stuff. Keep it up Mr Hart! As each race goes by I have more and more time for Gwin, his demeanour when both winning and losing deserves much respect.
  • + 85
agreed. that smile on Aaron's face when congratulating Danny says it all.
  • + 59
Gwin is pure class. I don't know what it is about Hart. Every time he's on it my heart starts pounding. I know it sounds gay. He's just so exciting to watch and I want him to win so badly since he's had a hard time with results since the world's win, and with all his near misses. Such a well deserved win. Good on you son.
  • + 30
@jaame: you take pride in someone that represents your country especially the way someone like Danny and Aaron both do. Both humble racers who have both amazing talent and class. Congrats to Hart, it was well deserved and long overdue.
  • + 14
@jaame: its not gay by the way
  • + 8
@jaame: I hear you on wanting Danny to win. I've never categorized him as one of my so-called "favorite riders", but I've always loved watching him because of his smooth, effortless style and his rocket-like speed. And I always root for him because I know how badly he wanted a win after his World Champs win. You could tell he wanted to not only prove it to the world, but also to himself, that he could do it. You can tell in the way that he has gone from being a wild card on the podium to replacing Gee as Mr. Consistent that he has trained his f*cking ass off. And he has stayed humble the whole time. He's gotten more talkative in his interviews and always remains professional and friendly. Always daps the guys in the hot seats, and always congratulates the winner. He deserved this win.
  • + 8
@csermonet: I didn't know how badly I was rooting for hart until he crossed the line and it was green...I teared up for him.

I'm used to Watching the likes of minnaar and gwin always win with class, but it just isn't as special to the spectators because it feels like a predetermined result. DOESNT mean that they don't work equally hard, but hart has been performing in the shadow of his worlds win for 5 years and this was such a big deal
To him....I hope he continues to push for the overall!

Listening to Danny's post race bumbling happiness was such a special moment, couldn't be happier for the guy
  • + 5
@nvranka: Exactly! I was happy beyond measure! I clapped and clapped and clapped as if I was there!

I have NEVER been so happy for someone winning their first race as I was for Danny!
  • + 2
@BDKR: I scared the shit out of everyone at work when I yelled and clapped...everyone rushed up thinking it was an epic knockout or something, sadly not many watch the best sport in the world.
  • + 2
Not sure which was bigger...Loic last year or this race from Hart...I almost think this one. Now we just need Mr. Hill to the top step.
  • + 1
@rcrdrvr: Couldn't agree more about it being the best sport in the world!

And for me, it was a bigger thing to see Danny win. So long in coming and you know he really wanted it all this time.

But even more awesome is that he beat Gwin when Gwin stomped out one of those killer runs! From quali to the final he had to find 4+ seconds? In-phuck1ng-sane!

But yeah man! You're dead on! The best sport in the world!!!!
  • + 56
Best bit of the whole race was Danny's interview at the end, what a gent and such a likeable dude. Can't imagine a single person not stoked to see him take the win here. Well done Danny, moar winning pls. And a huge congrats to Tahnee, so close!!

and i do believe danny had the ability, unlike others, to not drop a f-bomb on the mic after a close win. professional.
  • + 7
Danny talked about having a proper training program this time instead of just showing up and race... wait... what? so all the time danny was just showing up and race?
  • + 2
@shuwukong: I think he means during the time of his World Champs win, he was just showing up and racing. Now you have to train your balls off. Danny has been on a proper training program for years now, busting his ass.

Absolutely, he took that corner textbook clean.
  • + 5
yeah when everyone else was putting a foot down, he kept them on and zipped through. When he did that, Claudio let out a "ughhh", which to me made it sound like Claudio thought he was slow through there. I was thinking to my self " no no Claudio that's the faster way"

Danny Hart - "That was the sketchiest run ever." = AWESOME
  • + 12
Awesome day for Danny: it all came down to that flat, grass right hander just above the finish line. Stoked for Finn as well.

Does anyone else get the impression that Bryceland doesn't really care about World Cups this season?
  • + 2
Ratboy for sure seems less motivated this year than in past seasons. He's probably hearing it from team mgmt all the time now. He won the WC overall only two years ago. Surely he hasn't lost all his form in that amount of time. Seems like a mental block of some sort. Maybe he's sad that peaty will be gone. I know I am.
  • + 1
 Hard to say why.

I do know that a lot of guys prefer to play it cool and find form in some way instead of just charging. That leads to injury. Having had a bad one I think he prefers to go as fast as he feels he can go on a given day.

That said, I have confidence that The Rat (notice the caps?) is more analytical about it off the camera than he is on.
  • + 9
Geez i love those shots of a rider head on absolutely full gas where all the spectators behind for as far as you can see are all looking in the direction of the two wheeled missile, mouths open in total awe of what they have just witnessed! I'm with you, he is one of the coolest riders. I'm glad he's one of the best yet doesn't have any egos and maintains that "Ride for fun" attitude which is why he's my absolute fav rider.
  • + 4
Can anyone explain 2 things to me? What does a vibration reduction sensor do? Why does Troy Brosnan have that body position going round a left hand turn? Normal good position would have hips out to the right, facing where you're going, like in the 4th pic of Danny.
  • - 3
He's still in setup stage of the corner so it doesn't matter that much. He may try to shift his hips like that to then twist the body with more momentum to put the power down for grip, or he just catches balance.
  • + 7
The vibration sensor is complete BS - nothing more than pseudo-scientific drivel. It would be great to see some digging into this "technology" and have one of these enthusiast sites ask some hard questions.
  • + 1
I don't think it's a true left, but that spot where the riders have to 'slalom' between the gate pictured, and the next, which encroaches into the entry to a right hander. Troy has already completed his left turn, squeezing past the gate, and is trying to straightline the track to the next gate. He is starting his transition to set up for the right hander that is coming, shifting his weight to the left pedal, swinging the bike across his body, and likely exhibiting the form you're expecting about 1 second after this pic was taken. No idea why he's unclipped, though.
  • + 13
@aaronjb: Yeah, I read their website description. "It do not need a power source, it acts with quantum-electrodynamics" and "It acts directly on the electronic configuration of the material" seems more like fancy words than real explanation. I know someone at the lab (I'm a grad student in engineering) who works on electromagnetic damping, but it sure as hell not so easy to fit them in a micro-ship without powersource. Also, if you play with the electronic configuration of a material, you'll definitely modify its mechanical properties. Finally, I just had a look in the scientific database (sciencedirect and elsevier) and nobody ever released something related to macroscale vibration damping using quantum electrodynamics. I call marketing BS too.
  • + 1
Troy uses his knees on that to distribute the weight, his hips are in that position because of the turn he is coming from, and the one he is trying to approach, ratboy does this a lot too
  • + 1
@lochussie A vibration reduction system is a fugazi. An insanely expensive fugazi!

But that's the way to sell a fraud - brazen, balls out confidence.
  • + 2
Watching the video (and there is a cool feature where you can select rider and part of run), his right foot is majorly off the pedal after the right turn just before, so I think he just hasn't had time to get into shape for this left. I have seen this in other photos and vids of top riders though, so maybe there is a deliberate technique sometimes.
  • + 1

Technically speaking, maybe he is having a good year but used to seeing him consistently finishing better in couple years past. Thx.
  • + 1
He got hurt really bad on that ankle, then had another setback last season. To go full gas in training is why these guys are winning. Injuries set you back fromantic making the same guys as the other top guys.
  • + 3
Great race. I though Greg was going to reel in Gwin, but no go. Danny's run was awesome, well done. As for the wome, I definitely wanted to see Tahnee take the win. Already looking forward to the next round.

Whilst Sam Hill may not be in the top 20 this season and people might be thinking is time is over, his impact on his team mates and younger riders is certainly evident, having a huge impact on the progression of the junior ranks and riders like Elliot heap, Mike Jones and such. This grows the sport, there will always be a place in the sport for veteran riders like Sam. Well done mate.
