A Look Inside Canyon's New Pit and Truck Setup

Jul 6, 2017
by Ross Bell
Canyon were a fresh face on the DH WC circuit this year but have already cemented themselves as one of the sport's big hitters. In Andorra the the team arrived with an all new truck taking their pit setup from humble to huge, we've been for a snoop to see what's hiding away in the depths of the fresh truck and tent.

The super-cross style truck gives the team a big presence in the pits.

The new space has given the team almost double the amount of space they had before Andorra making their life so much easier.

Team dinners can now be done in the pits, as well as physio and post practice debriefs.

bigquotesIt’s made our life amazing, living in the pits is pretty cool because we can work a lot later and not worry about getting to dinner on time. Being able to wake up and start work when you want and eat food when you want is actually pretty rad. Having the space to put parts away makes my life so much easier. We’ve got a lot more space than we had before, stuff like not having to worry about parts rubbing on each other during transport which is really good. Its really sick.Aaron Pelttari

Not only do the guys have more workspace but storing parts is way simpler and safer.

The area at the back of the truck gives the mechanics a dry and warm place to work of needs be.

The only way is up for the mechanic who's rooms are above the work and living space.

bigquotesWe inherited this workshop setup, we haven’t done very much to it. Obviously we are going to need to customize it and make it our own so to speak. We’ve got ample tire storage and wheel racks, a bench with plenty of room for doing suspension and enough cabinetry for all the small spares. One of the luxuries we have in the back here is a washing machine and drier which is always nice.Gabe Fox

bigquotesWe’ve only had the trailer for a few weeks so we haven’t fully purposed all the cupboards and what not, we’ve got two bunks in the hallway. This is the area where the riders can rest and chill out before their runs, another luxury that’s cool to have is a full size shower. We have three people sleeping in the truck right now.Gabe Fox

Canyon Pits
A fully functioning kitchen makes nightly team dinners way easier.

bigquotesThen moving into the front here you’ve got a five burner stove, double sink, a fridge freezer, a great area for sitting and a playstation for the boys. Above in the hallway here is the two other bunks, with the other being in the very back.Gabe Fox

 nicer than my apartment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 That's bigger than my house!

 And better than my workshop!

All that bling certainly doesn't dissuade the notion that bike companies are not overcharging for their bikes..

I love the Canyon team, but I'm surprised Rockshox are still letting teams use the Vivid!?! I understand the Canyon and the Giant Glory don't use metric shocks but I thought RS would have just made some deluxe shocks up in a different size for them
  • 3 0
@doesn't the new shock have less adjustment? Seems less is more for some.
  • 5 0
@heavyp: They aren't going to be using the same internals. What they use in their 'Vivid' will be better than what you can buy anyway.
  • 1 0
@heavyp: very little availability. Giant just got their Super Deluxes at Andorra.
  • 7 0
@TheDoctoRR: Dude, nice as this is, it is barely a blip compared to pro roadies and their rigs. On top of that it doesn't even come close to the rigs of other pros in sports like Moto. Bike companies are just trying to stay afloat right now.
  • 7 0
@TheDoctoRR: really? its obviously a 2nd hand truck...

f*ck coffee pods, man; those things are so bad for the environment. Bikes on the other hand...
  • 27 1
So true, good job this articulated lorry runs on fermented cabbage
  • 23 4
Not only that, the coffee is fucking awful.
  • 21 2
@ScandiumRider: and costs the equivalent of $40 a pound. Paying essentially triple some very good single source environmentally and economically friendly coffee.
  • 4 1
@ScandiumRider: Yes not the best but it's all about convenience & speed IMO.
  • 8 7
Crafty-p Im an environment concious rider too. Love dh but dh bikes erode the hell out of the tracks. Just check the venues year after year bigger and bigger ruts show damage through rainfall instead of benefit to the woods. Even make it more logical as the riders point it. Start on on side of europe and finish at the other not bouncing back and forth. Need to think something to counteract the carbon footprint we leave.
  • 11 12
@donpinpon29: i love the guys worried about erosion from bicycles, it will surely be the end to mankind as we know it if people dont stop skidding their rear tires...there are soo many examples that make bicycle erosion absolutely pointless in the longterm, like say a volcano eruption, if i were you bud id start protesting those volcanos and leave the bike riders be.
  • 11 8
@whitebullit: dont try to play smart on me. Im not talking about skidding, are you really so narrow minded? I live surrounded by volcanoes. And their consequenses. Excuses like yours make trump happy. Carbon mining is cool because is a natural resource then? Im sure this is not the place to talk about this but please dont underestimate others ok?

@donpinpon29: oh boy! he comes back swingin! im going to think real hard about what you said today as i fire up my diesel truck and drive to the pro trump rally, were gonna be burning books so bring all you've got!!!
  • 7 3
@whitebullit: dont forget to plant some trees when you finish!!
  • 2 0
@whitebullit: the funny thing is diesel is by far better for the environment than any gas or even electric car at the moment

Coffee snobs gotta hate on the capsules. I agree it ain't the best but sometimes you don't want to deal with the grinding, tamping and all that noise and just want shot of caffeine ASAP or someone's going to get bitch slapped.
  • 2 1
On top of that, the coffee is really shitty! I guess there are aimed at the weak, lazy, and or sheeple with terrible taste in coffee!!

 So SICK !!!

Its good to see GABE FOX on the scene... is there any articles on him moving on from Devinci to Canyon ?

Be interesting to know a bit more in depth how these teams are formed etc etc
  • 4 0
Also, did Nigel wrench for Mark too, back in the Chainsaw era?
Man I miss seeing him race!
  • 5 0
so cool to see the wallace/fox duo move on over to the class team that is canyon!

playstation mx vs atv REFLEX during downtime wouldn't be so bad either.
  • 3 1
Yeah nice to see Gabe at Canyon, but what happened with Barel. I thought he was coaching the team. Anyone knows more?

Shred on guys! Great first season so far!
  • 2 0
@FineLine-Media: Barel has an EWS team as well he is one guy impossible to be several places at once.
  • 3 0
@Mirks: Thanks! Was not aware of that.

new truck but OLD PS3??? C'mon guys! Step up your game!!!
  • 5 0
I would love to see the world cup do two stops on the North America Continent. Something east coast and west coast or The Rockies. Then we'd get to see some of this cool stuff. Maybe not the full EU trucks and support infrastructure, but we'd get more than what we had at Nationals or Kamikaze bike games. . .
  • 1 0
I go to MSA every year... we don't see many big rigs like that one, they're mostly in Europe unfortunitely
  • 2 0
Just come over to Europe! Time it right and you can come for two weeks and catch two world cups...
  • 4 0
I too want to know the story of how Gabe Fox became part of the team! It makes sense with Mark and Nigel already being at Canyon but come on Pink Bike let's get an interview with Gabe!
  • 5 0
not complaining at all but some nice wide-angle or fish-eye views would be great. I love this stuff
  • 6 0
so this is my dream "house"
  • 1 0
Sometimes I think it's a possibility to make another run at racing the WC and then you see something like this. It reminds you how much of a separation there is for the top guys to get that extra percent performance. Such a sick rig. It must be such a joy to operate out of there.
  • 5 0
Just as Flo wanted, nice work Canyon.
  • 1 0
Damn, now that's big time. I wouldn't be one for the pressure like, "there's many, many people, and a semi, and a big company relying on you to win this race!". Reminds me of this: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-r5ANSCx7KBM/VImd53pKVRI/AAAAAAAAE40/jVGN-5_N5XA/s1600/C1-Bullets.png

  • 1 0
They are mechnix workz pro stealth flip flops, only pro mechs get those! Yeah right!
  • 3 1
all that moneys worth of stuff and they got a ps3 for the riders to chill out . if I was riding for them id be having words
  • 1 0
How can you have a ghetto PS3 when you have carbon fiber cutouts for all your tools in your toolbox? Dichotomy at its finest.
  • 2 0
Nigel already had that tool box setup at Devinci.
  • 1 0
 @TPLRacing: its sick.
  • 1 0
My inner mechanic just popped the biggest boner. And I am a full-time mechanic. So I popped a boner at that setup.

  • 1 0
Canyon's motto: Go big or go home!
  • 1 0
They could have at least made the tractor unit a different colour.
  • 1 1

Who manufactures those awnings? Fixtures and such? Trailer manufacture?
  • 1 0
Also interested. All the pro teams with sprinter vans have a slick pit set up that attaches to the van. Where do I get one of these.
  • 1 0
 And a masseuse, wow!
  • 1 1
Canyon must be earning a lot...
