Aaron Gwin's World Champs YT Tues

Sep 6, 2016
by YT Industries

The Downhill World Champs would not be the same if bike manufacturers didn’t give their designers the green light to go ahead and create unique frames for this special event of the season. The big show in Val Di Sole is YT’s first time at the World Champs and of course they want to celebrate this with a very own Special Edition World Champ TUES.

YT’s creative heads didn’t waste any time and started with the first sketches right away. After all, a special project far off from mass production triggers any designer’s artistic ambitions. The guys wanted to create something that sparks interest and happiness by just simply looking at it; a true collector’s item for fans and the riders.

The designers of Aaron Gwin’s World Champs bike definitely achieved just that. The focus was put into a subtle Stars & Stripes theme. No kitsch, no candy. Instead, fine details of the US flag can be found on the bike. The colors used are in a perfect harmony and the matte finish gives the bike a touch of understatement.

The flawless finish is one of the main highlights of the frame. Custom painter Adrian Flor from Dresden put in an insane amount of extremely accurate work: “Handmade in Germany” in its purest form. Every single detail on the frame was painted and Adrian is proud to have stayed away from using simple stickers. He spent over 50 hours on: grinding, priming, sanding, priming the base color, then masking the frame with tape, applying red paint, applying blue paint, adding the clear coating, then sanding it again and finally applying the matte paint. Of course, he had to wait quite some time in between each step. A crucial part was that the sensitive parts of the frame had to be protected and the edges had to be masked extremely accurately.

According to Adrian, the best moment of the entire project was when he applied the final clear coating and afterwards holding the final result in his hands. The custom paintjob for YT was the most elaborate project Adrian has ever had to work on. Just for this job he had to buy a special scale to make sure he would not exceed the weight of the paint. Every gram counted and at the end, Adrian stayed below the allowed 300 grams by just using 230 grams for the entire project.

Enter the orange Fox lowers to f**k it up...
  • + 48
@OlavA I hope they paint/design it so that it fits the frame design
  • + 95
Agreed man! the orange lowers are f\/CK ugly!
  • + 20
surely he doesn't have to use those because world champs and world cup are different things?
  • - 1
@sean9002: they look need on racheys bike
  • + 41
the orange lowers will be great come hunting season
  • + 6
Just apply some Vinyl wraps and that takes care of the issue, YT designers won't let that get past after such a gorgeous paint job.
  • + 13
yet they still painted all the bearing surfaces in the swingarm.
  • + 1
@rejean: Yep, that was my first thought! Now they have to clean the overspray out before mounting the bearings!
  • + 1
still like neko's murica scott for last year's worlds better
  • + 2
 It is hunting season
  • + 3
@skidrumr: or they could be like norco and just press bearings and headsets into paint :/
  • + 2
@lornee: turkey season just stared here
  • + 2
@rejean: Gee only a Canadian would notice that lol refund.
  • + 0
But is it going to available to the public as a custom bike?
  • + 2
@rejean: Such care was taken. Many tape layups. Wow!
  • + 1
@gonecoastal: Bunch of Sour Grapes hate-n the Orange!
  • + 2
I think Fox bought Marzocchi just for the color.
  • + 1
Thankfully there will not be orange lowers: www.pinkbike.com/photo/13918232

They should fit smoke canisters to the frame like you get on display aircraft (Red Arrows) so that Gwin can trail red white and blue smoke down the course. And loud speakers to pump out the star spangled banner. And DEFINITELY handlebar tassels.

Ooh, 1st comment again @bigtim! I feel a challenge coming on...
  • + 1
 @metong: That too!
  • + 2
The only Captain America I know had a magnificent mustache (cougars, they love it) & had a strangely french accent. He also broke himself off during practice at Rampage '04.
  • + 3
This was even more humorous when I saw you don't live in the US
  • + 3
@BDKR: and why not some chicks with pom poms for that all american finishing touch Smile
  • + 2
 @FatBoyFreeride:
Huck Norris?
  • + 1
 @metong: Better than formula right?
  • + 2
@groghunter: didn't he biff hard after a gap drop?? I remember Simmons having a big crash there too
  • + 2
@mhoshal: Yup, early on finals day. Early enough I wasn't up on the mountain watching, lol. He had a lot of fun doing wheelies past Winnebagos driving down the road on a moto the previous afternoon, in costume, though.

Simmons endoed off the edge of the second or third drop, which was one of the bigger ones. Until he popped up about 10 seconds later, we figured he was dead. It was terrifying. Face first off a 20 or 30 foot drop.
  • + 76
Not to take away from the finished product, but the photo when it's just white and red would look fantastic as a bike for a Canadian racer.
  • + 45
 #longlivechainsaw
  • + 24
 Or a Polish racer
  • + 13
 Or a Hells Angels rider
  • + 32
 @BDKR: Or a Swiss\Canadian Hells Angels rider.
  • + 77
Or a Red Cross volunteer Downhilling to the rescue!!
  • + 11
@Boardlife69: I found my new dream job.
  • + 7
@Patrick9-32: That would be sick. Imagine an earthquake in (epic location) and your part of the first response team that's air dropped on top the mountain landing on an epic trail where you navigate down with your rescue pack and DH bike. Kids lives depend on you so your pinned on unfamiliar terrain smashing through rock gardens and whipping off of stumps. Then you get to the buried village and spend the next 100 hours straight breathing toxic dust/fumes with no sleep, food or water. Pulling out dead body after dead body praying that you can save at least one. And you do and that's what makes it all worth it. Sign me up please.
  • + 22
 @Boardlife69: yeah, that got weird
  • + 4
@Boardlife69: Hahaha that got dark real fast.
  • + 3
@ButtersNZ: yeah it started off as fun and games but I had to end with the truth and what many volunteers and staff or the Red Cross have to deal with. Respect.
  • + 1
@Boardlife69: are you an undercover Waki?
  • + 1
actually it'd be even more fantastic for a peruvian racer Big Grin
  • + 51
Stunning. Needs an 'after assembly' picture though..
  • + 46
I've seen a lot of USA themed paint on bikes and this right here is the cleanest. Just enough Flash, just enough subtlety. I tip my hat to you YT. Cheers
  • + 12
Yeah most of them tend to be a bit too garish and in your face. This actually looks really cool.
  • + 0
@JacksonTM Agree with your comment - rather understated and cool - EXCEPT for the square logo device at the front. It neither fits in with the rest of the lines, nor makes any sense. 'REPUBLIC OF YOUNG TALENT'? What does that even mean? The lines coming off the square look crooked when they hit the chamfer of the top tube as well. I would have repeated the lightning bolt zig-zag at the bottom bracket area, on the top tube at that point, and maybe put another USA star in there.
  • + 7
@twozerosix: just to confirm, you realise young talent is what YT stands for right? I mean sure, if you really think about it, it doesn't really make much sense but as far as brand slogans go, its not really anything out of the ordinary.
  • + 1
@el-nombre: Regardless of the slogan, the graphic design in that area is still kludgey (that's a technical term) compared to the cleanliness of the rest of the scheme.

But no, I didn't realize that. I thought it was the founder's initials.
  • + 0
Probably the only thing topping this would have to be Shaun Palmer's mitic Intense M1 from 1996 when he lost the world title by 0.15s or as Peaty said "by a cock's hair"
  • + 1
@twozerosix: I agree it's a little out of place, however I think it kind of gives it the aesthetic of a WWII fighter plane. A star probably would have worked too, but with all the sharp lines already I think it blends nicely. But of course, to each his own, eh?
  • + 4
Cam Zink's US/Budweiser slope bike was legit too
  • + 1
@wrc21: see, that's the difference between Brits and Canucks. We say "c*nt hair"
  • + 1
It looks like Greg Minaar's V10 from this year Blank Stare
  • + 5
Silver FarBar looks weird! love the black kiwi art on the top tube
  • + 3
 Those HT pedals tho
  • + 4
not a fan and normally the raw thing does it for me too.. silver and black of course work for a Kiwi, but its too subtle, both look a bit meh i think. Love the V4 though, Remi's matte black one has been an amazing looking ride.
  • + 1
And then they threw on a stock colored boxxer...whoops
  • + 15
Perfection. Think I'm the only person in the world who has felt Peaty's bikes have been a bit overdone this year. This is slick.
  • + 7
I follow you on this point but have to admit it fits to Peaty's fancy pretty well. Finally a nice job for the spitfire even if it cannot rule anyone's taste !
  • + 3
Peaty's bike are overdone but I think that's the point. He usually does go a bit over the top but it's done on purpose.
  • + 3
 The Ben & Jerry bikes?
  • + 4
@GXMV: Spitfire was definitely the best.
  • + 10
That's awesome. I feel like my patience would be too weak for any sort of worthwhile result, it would be like, "one cool stripe, matching cool stripe on the other siiiiidddeee.........okay, it's not matching WTF........oh wow now the paint's bleeding everywhere.......(dumps entire bucket on in frustration) dutdadaadaaaaaaa finished!
  • + 9
If Captain American where to ride a DH bike, this is what i would envisage it to look like, Brilliant Art work!!
  • + 5
After seeing things like that I want to paint my frame instantly. The only thing that stops me is knowing that end effect wouldn't be anything like what I've just seen Wink
  • + 3
practice, practice, practice......just like riding, you'll get good if you give it a go mate! worst case scenario, you have fun =)
  • + 2
@sean9002: I will. I've got old frame and I'll definitely give it a go in winter Wink
  • + 2
This might be a stupid question, but can someone explain the difference between the world cup races and the world championship race?

What is the difference between winning the world cup overall title, and winning the world championship race?

And are they both put on by UCI, or separate entities?

Thanks!
  • + 4
Basically riders represent their countries rather than their commercial teams. The winner gets to wear the rainbow stripes the following year and the fastest for each country get a sweet sleeve that represents their countries flag the following year as well. Hope this helps.
  • + 5
Both are put on by UCI. It is a carryover from a tradition in road cycling. Basically there is one race every year that is deemed "The World Championship." In DH it comes at the end of the season. Riders compete on national teams instead of their normal teams. You get to wear a special jersey with rainbow stripes on it during the next season if you win. It's perhaps the most prestigious single race to win due to the special jersey, tradition, etc, but at the end of the day it's pretty much the same as any world cup stop. Winning the world cup overall is more prestigious than the World Championship because you have to perform consistently for the whole season.
  • + 7
@tornateo: I thought you get to wear your country's flag if you won national champs, not world champs?
  • + 5
@tmcp1127: thank you for the best explanation of this thus far. Although, while I agree with your assessment that the World Cup Overall SHOULD be more prestigious a title, it seems like Loic Bruni got FAR more attention and praise for winning World Championship last year, than Gwin did. Not that Gwin needs the praise and attention as everyone knows he's a monster.

It is a bit counterintuitive, particularly when World Champs always follows the last World Cup race so closely. I'd assume that it's simply just more convenient logistically for the teams and UCI to do it this way. But I feel like World Champs in a way steals the thunder of the whoever wins the World Cup overall.
  • + 2
@MasterSlater: If Loci Bruni got far more attention/praise for winning Worlds than Gwin did for the overall, it's because it's Loic Bruni, the "People's Champ," super likeable personality and all that, and it was his first elite win...probably would have gotten the same reaction even if it wasn't Worlds. I don't think it has much to do with it being Worlds.

The other thing I think is cool about worlds is that the criteria to qualify and race are different, so you get to see lots of people from lots of countries who never qualify or even go to the World Cup events get to race on the world stage with the best in the sport.
  • + 3
@ecologist: No offense here, I'm just trying to say that from an objective, merit based perspective, it doesn't make a lot of sense. If it's a popularity contest than they should call it "Most Popular Racer" Smile . People don't like Gee, for whatever reason, but if he wins, he wins. And he should reap the benefits whether people like him or not. I know it's not just about racing, and personality has a lot to do with it. I think that Loic and Gwin should've each gotten their own time in the limelight instead of titles being bestowed right on top of one another.

Also, I think it's great that the riders race for their respective countries, and that others who can't race World Cup get the opportunity to race Worlds. But the truth is, and this is born out by the coverage, no one gives a s*** about anyone except the top 15 riders, who are (I'm making a big assumption here) are all World Cup regulars.

Worlds could stand some tweaking to separate the two in people's minds. Because obviously, it's not coming off the way it could to spectators as a "worldwide" all-inclusive race. I don't think it's just me.
  • + 2
 @wpplayer18:
I'm wrong, sorry.
  • + 3
@MasterSlater: About the top 15 riders being all anyone cares about, thats not necessarily true. My favourite ever World Champs run was from a guy from Kazakhstan who obviously wasn't anywhere near the skill of the other guys, but it was awesome to watch him give it a crack (in his DH jersey and white jeans)! I love watching the great variation of people giving it a go, and usually watch from the start. And every now and then an awesome run comes up from an otherwise unkown rider.
  • + 2
@MasterSlater: I totally get what you're saying, and it takes a lot more consistency to win the world cup overall than world champs, but there is a case to be made for World Champs.

Think about how unforgiving DH racing is; one qualifying run, one finals run, with no redos in the case of a mistake, a mechanical or an injury. Basically you have one opportunity to go flat out. This season Bruni did very well.. in the races he entered. Despite missing out on a few races due to injury, he still finished with a top ten number plate, something impressive even for someone who entered every race and had decent results. What Im saying is the cup/points format gives some margin for error. Get a flat in one race and you can still have a good season. Meanwhile in World Champs, there is a huge level of importance and pressure placed in that one race, that one run, so it can in some senses be seen as the ultimate representation of the downhill racing format.
  • + 1
@MasterSlater: I think a week is all the time any one man should have to stand around for high-fives, back-slapping, and autographs. Any longer and it would start to go to his head...and besides that, more than one week and I think Gwin would have just gone home anyway.

I'll say it again...Worlds is awesome because we get to see all those low-ranked, unknown riders on the World stage alongside the best in the sport. It's awesome, they're awesome, and I "GIVE A S***." It sounds like you're just upset that the people who win the most aren't the most popular, and that people who never win aren't popular enough...and that is quite the conundrum...
  • + 2
@ecologist: I'm not upset about anything! Just trying to suss this out a bit so I can appreciate Worlds for what they are.

Because up until this thread, I didn't really understand them. Thanks for participating and showing me the light!
  • + 4
Gwin MUST wear a Captain America outfit whilst riding... If he doesn't then he doesn't deserve the bike!
  • + 5
 America. Get em Gwin.
  • + 4
 I haven't seen a corded mouse since the 90's
  • + 4
I still use a corded mouse on my desktop. I was more shocked by that monitor. Haven't seen one like that since my last trip to the second hand store.
  • + 3
 No batteries, no hassle
  • + 3
My mouse can do corded as well as wireless (and charges on a stand when not in use), but i tend to go with the corded use because batteries are annoying.
  • + 0
@el-nombre: yeah...sheesh...I use my computer and go online to get away from all this technology and crap...last thing I want to deal with is batteries in...oh...wait...I think I messed up...

I will say that my computer mouse can run for about two years on dead/flat batteries and I find cords to be annoying. That's also why I did away with my corded phone and other extraneous tethers.
  • + 2
@ecologist: If my mouse got anywhere near that I would consider it for sure. I use my computer a lot as i am a developer, and tend to avoid batteries because they die so fast with the use that I give them. I can certainly appreciate a cordless desk, but man do I hate changing batteries frequently.
  • + 2
You will see gamers use them heavily. I for instance use a G502 from Logitech. For work I use a wireless mouse.
  • + 2
@cgdibble: If you can snag one that does both and charges while connected then you have the best of both worlds.
  • + 1
@cgdibble: right on...even as I wrote it I knew there are probably mice that draw a lot more power...mine's a super-simple job with two buttons and a wheel...it gets plenty of use for sure (I crunch data), and I never turn it off, but I admittedly can't fit models as fast as a gamer can fire at Nazi zombies. I thought it would be a great way to use the last bit of power in otherwise useless batteries before I bin them, but I accumulate batteries way faster then my mouse can finish them off!
  • + 2
@ecologist: My mouse is a gaming mouse, and while i don't game on PC anymore I fell in love with the mouse and how it feels so I have stuck with it. It's a Razer Black Mamba and it is the best!

@Albe23: It is an ideal mouse for me. The Razer Black Mamba! It has a charging port if you feel like going wireless and need to charge when not in use and also can run corded (my preference, generally).
  • + 1
So much nerd talk... My gaming mouse became my work mouse since I sit at the same desk. If I'm working from a coffee shop or something, i bring a wireless mouse. That's always the worst when my battery dies. Part of me wants to pick up a black mamba so I can be wireless or wired when I need it. Not sure I can convince myself or work to spend that much money for a mouse though.
  • + 1
@jojotherider1977: Haha i love that it is so off topic from the article, too.

I have a black mamba at home and at work. My home one I have had for something like 6 years and it is still working perfectly.

I agree that this was cool, and no offense to pinkbike here, but this was not an PB article, it was a press release written up by YT and given to the mountain bike media. The write up and photos are posted on multiple sites today.

I appreciate that YT chose to do something tasteful, instead of insulting the way they were insulting when opening their Canadian distribution (replaced the maple leaf with an angry beaver on our flag)

So Gwin rides for the patriots now? Or is that Tom Brady's bike?

Only if he wants to ride with flat tires.
  • + 1
I'm not big fan of 'Murican stuff normally....but this is freaking awesome.

yeah, the patriotic paint jobs are usually a bit tacky and over the top. But this is just plain sick looking. I'd be stoked if my every day bike had a paint job like this.

  • + 1
 Beautiful workmanship, wow!
  • + 0
They should switch out for some gum wall Onza tires for a classic look. Masterful work of art!
  • + 3
@yerbikesux: exacly, are they even claiming still that he rides onza tires? They could still sponsor him but to say that his bike is fitted with "Onza Ibex DHC Tires, 27.5 x 2.40"and then actually running blacked out minions. Who do they think they are fooling?
  • + 4
@oskare: if anything, he will most likely be on his Onza protos that look very similar to Minions/Butchers/Bontragers. He's been on them at other races so far, even when people claimed they are blacked out Maxxis tires.
  • + 1
@oskare: saw an article recently that this past weekend in Andorra was the first week they planned to run their own new onza DH tire. I gave no idea if they did or not though.
  • + 1
@yerbikesux: ha yah, well which ever brand tire he's really running should be gum wall cause i think it'd look sick with this paint.
