by Pinkbike Staff

Aaron Gwin, back and looking fast during his first race run after a knee injury that required surgery this off-season. Great insights with the GPS telemetry on the GoPro too!

That top rock section.... I'd need my GoPro telemetry to show vital signs and the x-rays of my broken vertebrae and clavicles.

The opportunities to go over the bars are endless up there.

I'm just gonna pretend my speed is like scoring in golf. That way I'm better than Gwin. Like Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but golf is based off lowest number wins also.
  • 26 2
@hpiguy: Fundamentalist said it right, he means that his speed is low, Gwin's speed is high. So in that regard, he would be way better if it was like golf. Fundamentalist didn't say anything about time, only speed.

 @dhrace507: still makes no sense
  • 11 1
@jimmythehat: for Fundamentalist, his speed is low, like 3 mph, or in other terms, a birdie! This way Gwin's "score" (speed) is 27 to 30, you'd get laughed off the course with a 27 on one hole! So wake up, practice your putting, and leave going slow to us experts!

@Bomadics: pointless and boring I'd say
  • 49 2
Well it looked like a race run at the top, and on the track. But what happened at the bottom? Looked like he was going to just load up his bike in his truck and go home!
  • 47 2
so cal racing bruh, lap then beer.

@jimmythehat: holy crap dude, if you're going to correct, know of what you speak! "So Cal" Southern California, hello (that was me tapping on your hat) Jimmie!

I would be honored to get passed by Gwin! He was hauling
  • 37 1
Imagine being the guy right before Gwin
  • 35 1
Just thinking "Hopefully I don't screw his run up too much!"
Or being the guy in front of the guy in front of Gwin. "Hopefully he doesn't pass me!"
  • 17 2
4 weeks ago I was the guy right before Finn Iles at this same place. Luckily he didn't catch me lol.
  • 26 1
 @gonecoastal: "I hope he doesn't pass me" ?
Only a few people can legitimately say that. Think it's more of "Wonder where he'll pass me at"
  • 1 0
Hehe his "On your left!" pass made me feel like a snail, cuz that woulda been me.

@krisrayner: It's a sub two minute run for Gwin and the guy would have a one minute head-start on Gwin.
  • 4 0
@gonecoastal: 30 seconds Innit. You can see it at the start.
  • 1 0
@alexhyland: 30 seconds for that guy. 30 seconds for the guy in front of him. A one minute head start for the TWO ahead of Gwin.
  • 1 0
@gonecoastal: ah yeah sorry misread you
  • 16 0
Dang cam angle on the front tire...i want riders perspective way out front/ahead!!!
  • 17 0
When you realize your lifting your head up trying to changle the angle on the video.
  • 14 3
Love this..shows up to race with the common folk. Most wouldn't even think about it. This is what makes racing in the states awesome!
  • 2 0
Do you know where the results are? I can't find any
  • 10 0
@hamncheez: results aren't posted yet but he only beat Bruce Klein by .7 of a second. Bruce has been freakin quick this year, though
  • 6 0
@joalst: Also some drunk spectator got in Bruce's way during his race run. Who knows if it would have made a difference but Bruce was definitely fast.
  • 4 5
you must not see whats going on with the east coast.
  • 10 2
Sorry, maybe dumb question. Is that a standard feature on the GoPro? I assume top models? That is pretty interesting. I'd be interested in one of those above just a regular video of riding. Thanks. Help be great.
  • 2 1
Didn't mean to neg prop... the new feature is only on Hero5 it seems.
  • 3 0
@dirtbag420: the garmin virb xe has had the gps telemetry for about two years already with ant sensor compatibility also so can display heart rate , cadence, power output etc aswell as speed g force distance etc, its ace
  • 9 0
congrats to the doctor, looks like he is fine
  • 10 0
congrats to his will to do the physical therapy, probably more
  • 2 0
 What was the injury/op?
  • 3 0
@jrocksdh: not sure of the name or the exact procedure. but from his instagram from ten weeks ago he says "Had a minor knee surgery to remove a lose piece of cartilage that's been buggin me for a few months."
  • 2 0
@loam33: sounds like a catchy meniscus got cleaned up.
  • 5 0
I feel like I would have been bleeding out of my
Eyeballs if I experience speed like that. He was moving lightning fast down those rock gardens. That was like true no brake riding right there.????????
  • 5 0
Yeah, he did that alot faster then my slow ass Frown
  • 5 0
..and then, to add insult to injury, he rode home on his dh bike...
  • 5 0
He is very fast on bicyles
  • 5 1
And I complain about pedaling my road bike at 26-28mph...
  • 7 0
Would be interesting to see what his power meter was reading.
  • 2 2
@Thustlewhumber: Would he have one? Extra weight for a meh statistic?
  • 6 0
@swamper1: that statistic is a pretty big one.... 20g it adds to get power.. not much... a slice of cheese, or a sip of water...
  • 4 0
As always, makes it look easy. I wish I was half as fast.
  • 14 0
He touched like a total of maybe 7 rocks. He was flying.
  • 2 0
Every section of those rocks at the top felt like reckless abandon by Gain just flying over and nailing it, where as I would go where's the line? Why he's a champ!
  • 3 0
 wow he destroyed the wall!
  • 3 0
I seriously feel like just giving up mountain biking after watching that.
  • 3 0
More gnarly than a few of the venues over the last few years on the DH WC
  • 1 0
After he passed that rider in front of him, I was seriously thinking, that he may pass even more riders till finish. Luckily for them the track wasnt longer..
  • 1 0
Usually you can't tell speed and gnar factor from pov but that was quite the opposite, I can't even comprehend what I just saw.
  • 2 0
I bet the SoCal folks with property bordering the trail are sooooo welcoming to the transients in the lower parking lot.
  • 2 0
So thats what blue sky looks like!! Be 4" deep in mud over here!
  • 1 0
What tire is he running in the front? You get a look at it in the first few seconds of the vid. Looks like a DHR II to me.
  • 2 0
I guess it's come kind of onza tire
  • 2 0
This is a fake race run...and alternative physics... Sad
  • 1 0
How could he not blow out of that corner at 2:19? What kind of sorcery is this? That looks so unlegit lol.
  • 1 0
Immortal words, "Damn, that felt good."
  • 7 0
Pretty sure he said, "that never feels good". Lotta pedalling on that course.
  • 3 0
@teebeeess: Agree. No matter how good or how slow you are, if you give it your all on the wall, you get the Fontana hack for the next 12-24 hours, coughing up interesting things.
  • 1 1
They have an auto leveling ap programmed into their suspension. That's why they seem to be riding on

XC course isn't it. Big Grin
  • 2 3
That course... some rocks, big wall then parking lot. Could use a little Hardline action. Good for kids i supose
