Adolf Silva Breaks Femur in Three Places In Crash at Loosefest XL

Jul 18, 2019
by Ed Spratt

Adolf Silva has just announced that he broke his femur in three places after crashing at Loosefest XL. Following his crash, Silva quickly went to the hospital where he has received treatment has even completed surgery on the injury.

We don't currently know any further details about the crash yet or how long Adolf will be out for but we've reached out for more info on what looks to be a very serious injury.

bigquotesBig crash yesterday during #loosefestxl. Broke my femur in 3 places but surgery went well, will be back in no time stronger than ever!! Adolf Silva

We're wishing Adolf all the best with his recovery and hope to see him back on the bike soon.

@Dropthedebt Uh, you're right, I was just using search Wink Have a good time, too. I'll ride a bike now.

@yoobee: u must be a fun guy to hang out with. question for ya: if a guy was gonna visit the Munich area, where should he go riding?
  • + 1
@savagelake: For sure, how do you know? Big Grin Well, I'm living north of Frankfurt, so I can't help you. The Munich region is quite flat, I only heard about the Isar trails. I'd recommend to head south to the Alps where you can find all that fun (e.g. Saalbach.com). Depends on your preferences, of course.

The femoral artery is huge and can be easily severed with femoral fractures. Dude is lucky to be alive.
  • + 12
Also, he didn’t break it in three places. It’s a comminuted fracture (more than two pieces). Gnarly AF.
  • + 4
That is not true. Vascular injuries are very uncommon in femur fractures.
  • + 5
@westsideloc: I didn't say they were common. Vascular injury occurs in 2% of midshaft femoral fractures. Of those who do have arterial damage, risk of compartment syndrome, infection and loss of limb is much higher. Also, the force requires to break a femur is immense. Dude is lucky to be alive.
  • + 1
Is this the one Gracia messed up?
  • + 2
@hkluge: my thoughts exactly, just because it's near by doesn't mean your going to severe the artery. people tend to think this is a major concern when it reality it is a very rare occurrence
  • + 1
 @hkluge:

theoretically sure, but extremely rare and in my experience as an orthopedic surgery resident haven't seen one in a simple closed fracture pattern unless it involved some sort of traumatic amputation or penetrating injury
  • + 22
Fuck it's bad enough breaking your femur in one place let alone 3, heal up man !!
  • + 7
From the x-ray photo, it looks like it is broken in a single location, by there are 3 pieces.
  • + 4
Looks like 3 different pieces from that one image? Hard to tell - but, man, that X-ray looks painful! Heal up swiftly and fully, Adolf.
  • + 5
It’s broken in one place with a splinter. It’s known as a comminuted fracture
“A comminuted fracture is a break or splinter of the bone into more than two fragments. Since considerable force and energy is required to fragment bone, fractures of this degree occur after high-impact trauma such as in vehicular accidents”
  • + 11
Just looking at that X-ray hurts.

Looks like the broken edge of his femur was gunning for his femoral artery as well, holy ****!

I’m really glad so much progress has been made with regard to bikes and rider skill to make this kinda stuff possible, but I wouldn’t hate to see some cool tech roll out to mitigate risk a bit for these guys on the cutting edge.

@frenchfriedfun agreed the risk is huge on jumps that size- but I don't think the outcome was expected and it sure sucks. Hope he heals quick and is able to keep his enthusiasm and progression.
  • + 7
Damn, was hoping to see him at Rampage.Hope you have a great recovery
  • + 1
After last years Rampage, I was excited to see him there again, and was already hoping he'd make it through the year healthy so he'd be fully charging it.. dammit! This is not the news I wanted to see.
  • + 1
He could theoretically still make it to Rampage.
  • + 2
@sriracha: yes, but not without some hesitation after coming off a big injury..Ratty came back the next year after his foot. But, he wasn't the same. I'm still pissed about that! I wanted him to win worlds and the cup so badly.
  • + 1
@shrockie: I agree. There’s definitely a mental recovery associated with injuries. However, Rat’s foot/ankle injury involved many small bones, ligaments and range of motion rehabilitations. A broken femur, while very severe, is a fairly standard recovery process. Recovering range of motion involves a lot of time and pain. Plus, Silva is young and hungry.
  • + 3
@sriracha: hmmmm I really hope I’m wrong with this but with the type of fracture he sustained being a comminuted or “splintered” complicated fracture the surgery would have most likely been an open reduction with internal fixation, meaning open surgery with plates and/or screws permanently fitted. The external exo skeleton type of management that is then removed is not an option with his type of fracture. The risk from now on is further damage to the fracture point and it’s permanent hardware. Any subsequent trauma to that area can have catastrophic consequences. Not to mention the recovery from this type of injury is lengthy with anyone. Certainly his age/fitness will help. I very much doubt he will return to his former glory and if he does it will definitely be against surgeons wishes.
Still he’s a tough mofo and I really really hope he does come back!!
  • + 1
@Rimrider26: I’m obviously the one talking out of my ass, so I’m going to defer to what you just said and agree.
  • + 2
@sriracha: no mate your correct. A femur recovery is fairly straightforward, especially compared to a complex body part like an ankle, or any joint for that matter. He will recover well enough to ride for sure, BUT it’s the risk of traumatising that injury again. It’s not like an ACL or a Clavicle etc etc, it’s THE biggest bone in our body. Some injuries are career ending and this, due to the danger of life long repercussions, could be it for him.
  • + 1
@Rimrider26: ORIF is definitely the management. I have a rod in my tib. It immediately reduces the fracture and makes it stable. It really depends on how much soft tissue damage was done. That's the wild card. Healing vibes Adolph!!
  • + 6
Those are some monstrous hucks this year, one mistake and.... Well now you know. Heal quickly Adolf!
  • + 3
This kid goes so big everywhere. Even goes big on breaking his leg. Heal up quickly, AS.
  • + 2
 Fukin ell/
so sorry to see a fellow rider in the same position I have graced numerous times on some shitty gurney table. In a week everyone will have already visited and then shit gets depressing. You have a much larger loving audience than most of us dirtbags here on PB so please think about it every day when you get down... all of us rooting for you to heal up and we have NO expectations, just healing vybz.
Respect dude you always crush it.
  • + 1
At some point we might decide that progression into riskier moves isn’t worth the risks, even if it generates a buzz and great footage. Ligament damage, major fractures, spinal cord damage and concussions are no joke.
  • + 0
The gravity of the situation had a strong impact on Adolf, he's broken up over all the punishment on PB as he can't quite get a leg up on things. Let's hope he makes it through all this contusion & gets back on the bike soon Wink
  • + 1
That sucks! I did both mine at same time on an MX track, severed the left femoral artery too. Got ya beat there Adolf! LOL! All seriousness, keep your spirits high for a fast recovery and back to doing what you love!
  • + 0
It's fractured in one place and is a relatively simple femoral shaft fracture that I'm sure got an intramedullary nail the next day and he'll be weight bearing as tolerated afterward. These heal 98% of the time without issues as long as they got his rotation in the ball park he will be fine and back on a bike in a few months I'm sure. Doubtful it will slow him down for long! Heal up fast! Lucky he walked away with only that looking at the size of those jumps!

  • + 3
@humoroususername: He will be back. We had several femur breaks at the moto track over the years. Throw a titanium rod in it and they are walking in a few days. I will take that over a knee injury any day. I've had a tibial nail for 5 years and it's fine.
