Jun 16, 2018
by Pinkbike Staff

It looks as though Adrien Dailly, who is currently sitting in 11th in the EWS overall standings, is out for most, if not all, of the 2018 season due to a broken elbow. He shared the news via Instagram today noting that the injury happened a few days ago and he has already had surgery. Best wishes to you Adrien, heal up fast!

Looks like the surgeon implanted a subdermal elbow pad for next time. Rad

Ugh. Sucks. Too bad elbow protection is uncool these days. For me they usually contact the deck before my knees do.

That wouldn't stop a broken elbow anyway

 Make it cool. Rock it!

Dustfarter - I don’t know how cool or uncool elbow protection is, I only know that vast majority of folks don’t use it because vast majority of elbow guards are fkng horrible to wear, they are uncomfortable and the slide all the time, some may even contribute to arm pump. There’s a lot to hate about most elbow guards out there. Took me 10 years to find something acceptable. Poc joint system that is. I have 2 other pairs rottening at the attic because I thought I will be able to force myself riding in them but no. When I’m going down a gnarly trail, one of the last things I want to have on my mind is “i hate those fkng elbow guards!!!”

@dtm1: no, do you want to give me, Levin and Adrien a lesson about riding responsibly?

@danielshiels: hahahah, as if going super fast half blind on EWS comp was a good example to the groms. You know what’s a good advice to the groms? Tell your dad to smoke weed because otherwise he may turn into a judgmental prick. You guys are fkng disgusting, dude absolutely rips, shreds like a maniac, you all clap while he’s fightin Hill, Rude or Graves, but then he gets hurt and you are playing smart with “should have worn elbow pads”. Fkng dickheads

I put on uncool elbow pads pretty much every ride. Saved my bacon a few times and unlike knee pads I never even notice I am wearing them. So many good options these days. I can't imagine not wearing them unless I was truly doing some chill XC.
  • 5 3
@WAKIdesigns: im with you on this one man. People are willinf to chip in with the negative comments but i bet maybe 1% of you ride with elbow pads because they feel weird. Im glad you’ve found some that are comfortable and work for your because i sure havent! Enjoy the ride with your safe(er) arms mate

@WAKIdesigns: dude seriously. He is out for the season, dropping a load of cash, plus will most likely have permant issues. What does that have to do with his level of riding. Can you read? Might I recommend you start with the Greeks. Icarus.
  • 17 8
@Keit: dude seriously, if he broke his back, there would be sht loads of comments about b... oh wait, no there wouldn’t be comments about back protectors, there would be comments about prayers and thoughts. Mind your own business. I’d rather see folks not using enduro helmets in the bike patk than wearing tons of anti scratch protection. Because that’s what elbow pads are. A friend of mine broke elbow wearing 661 SP1 body armor. As if people weren’t fkng up their knees in padding. You have not a tiniest clue how this crash happened and you will condescend him because he doesn’t submit to your view of how every mountain biker should gear up which is a fkd up thing in the first place?

Let me condescend you now, if you had a tiniest bit of compassion for him, some basic empathy, you may put yourself into his situation on hospital bed, thinking how the racing season have slipped away, how he won’t be riding during the best time in the year, all the should have demons about line choice, state of mind, trust me, the last thing to do he wants to read is some online twat telling him “you should have worn elbow pads, you should know better”.

And then all this bullshit about “people don’t wear pads because they think it’s uncool”. Holy sht... is this how you deal with your insecurities? Is this how you compensate? Maybe you should start with liking yourself a bit more, because this clearly shows that you are worried that you don’t look cool but you want to be practical. Are you affraid what your boss will say if you come to meeting scratched? Will your wife make remarks? I am a good boy daddy, look at me dad, I am responsible employee/boss husband/father now, please daddy can you tell me that you are proud of me? Please daddy tell me that!

Again, he didn’t wear back protector, please give him sht for that too.

I don’t get why riders wearing gloves,elbow/knee pads, some sort of chest/back protection isn’t mandatory in all extreme cycling events , you see these guys doing rampage with just a helmet on ! If they where made to wear protection
1 they would get used to it
2 protection companies would make better stuff
3 probably less injuries
Everyone’s a winner !
  • 3 5
Not even going to bother reading the wall of text cause I'm drunk, but I wil say there just isn't any correlation between solid riders styling features and protection...

My buddies and I can't really manage to wear anything other than knees...

Not to say we are the most legit on the mtn by any stretch...it seems protection less riding is simply the most comfortable = the best in our eyes

We're trying to be mature adults now that we're or approaching 30...

Just can't do it. Buddy even bought elbow pads for the trip to be smart....hasn't worn em once

I don't think it'll ever change. And I love it

@WAKIdesigns: well allow me to retort.
1. I was not responding to Adrien and his injury, I was responding to you. Thus you may not imply I was condescending to anybody but you.
2. You may not imply that I have no compassion for Adrien. Absolutely the opposite. To be at this level of the sport it requires 100% of his time. He will miss the season, bonus pay, fitness level, etc etc. in short this is a catastrophe, which may or may not have been averted with the correct protection. None of us will ever know. Albeit it probably would have helped or bare minimum slowed the impact.
3. Your single examples are poor. "I have a friend"....please.
4. Hospital Bed. Yes I personally have been in this situation, unfortunately, a few times. And more than half of those had I prepared better I would not have this tale to tell. Not feeling what is below your waist is a terrifying experience. And yes the feedback was unanimous that a backprotector would have stopped it. Or picking up teeth because not wearing a full face helmet when all we had was a Styrofoam cup in the beginning of mtb.
5. You don't know me and never will, thus you have no right to personally attack me anymore. (Chickened out how many times when I asked you to put your money where your moUth is. Lets race? Not once have you responded. I let the fellow readers decide about that and not imply interpretations).
6. You have no idea how much I feel for an athlete at this level. Only the very few at the top make a full life out of sport. The rest shine bright for a moment in time and graft like mad just like the rest of us.
7. In conclusion. Any protection is, 9 times out of 10 better than none. That is a fact, and should be supported especially here as there are many impressionable young readers; that look for good advice. You are a father! What would you advise your kids later in life?
8. Now show yourself out you insulting, unprofessional gobshite; better said the Trump of Pinkbike.

 @Keit: triggered much brah?
  • 9 6
@Keit: I can do Trump for you.

Adrien this is president, I know that you know that I don’t like France, ok? It’s not just World War 2, it’s other things, things that I don’t want to talk about here. Now that we have that one out of the way, I want you to listen to me carefully: I am th biggest fan of Enduro, you can ask my people, nobody is a bigger fan, ok? And I’ve been watching your results, terrific, you’ve done beatifully, but this thing about riding without elbow guards is not a good deal ok? my best people were working on it, and NOT A GOOD DEAL! You have to think about family, about your future, I know you are young, I am young too, and I’ve been younger than you but you have to invest your future. Your inuries could be avoided if you only wore a elbow pad, and spine spine protector, and trust me, shin guards too. Now you should be ashamed of yourself Aidan, no chest guard either, your hospitalization costs billions and billions and billions, and billions, and who’s gonna pay for it? US citizen? Mexico? Do you want Mexico to pay it? No they are paying for my wall. My wall. There is no Obama care for your broken elbow. But I can get you a deal on elbow pads, very beatiful, very powerful. Think about what your dad would say, he’s not a war hero, I know, but still. A dad. I had a dad. I had many dads, I am dad myself and Ivanka is damn hot, but she would never fk you. She fks only Down Country riders. Lots of them. Thank you Ariel, take care, wishing you a yuge recovery.

The greatest president,
Endunald Trump

@Matt115lamb: what's the chance his forearm looks like yours? I may masturbate too much but very few elbow guards fit me, including the soft ones. Going to Hafjell on Thursday I will be standing by the lift preaching with signs: "God hates people without guards" "backprotection or hell", then I will change dress to Islamic Imam shouting at girls riding around: COVER THY SHINS!!!

@WAKIdesigns: you might want to try this in Birmingham. We can crowdfund your ticket.
  • 4 0
@WAKIdesigns: you say “ very few fit you “, so in that some do ! Put it this way , I’m a manager of a dh team that need results to keep sponsors happy . Got a rider that only wears a helmet , no gloves/pads/body armour . He’s/she’s always fxxking getting injured and I keep telling him/her to pad up , or the team goes tits up !
If it was mandatory for all dh riders to wear armour then my job would be a lot easier and so would the health of me rider !
Anyone else can ride in whatever they like or the trail centre says !
Go preach Smile
  • 2 3
@Matt115lamb: Pardon me for being not too egocentric but if so few guards fit my arms comfortably I dare to assume that I’m not the only one. Hence my original theory that most people don’t wear elbow guards because until last few years vast majority of them were a piece of crap. Just like most upper body armors. I wear back protector that is digustingly comfy and possibly best in the business, namely Dainese next LP. Very few have a chance to try one of these and majority of back protectors out there are... over engineered pieces of back heating crap. I can climb all day in mine. I don’t even know I have it on, hence so many ride in backpacks which are not as good in ortecting the spine as a solid back protector. I tried many helmets before I bought my first Fullface, I cashed out for the only one fitting me with full comfort TLD D2. I didn’t upgrade to D3 because it didn’t fit me. Bought PoC Coron, perfect fit, I am happy to wear it.

Point being, protection must be comfortable or people won’t wear it, one has to be really scared to ride in sht that slides off, jumps loosely or is too tight - most elbow guards were ticking both of these boxes: tight yet slides, with crappy straps with irritating velcros. My Fox elbow guards from ca 2010 had plastic part of velcro facing the skin, and when I hit the tree in them it felt like I had nothing on - because there was almost no padding between skin and hard shell, do I need to say more? Thanks to d3o kind of stuff getting more mainstream people will wear more protection.

For the longest part of MtB history elbow guards sucked, so did bidy armor jackets and back protectors, I for one am not surprised people don’t wear them. Around 2006 661 made kyle strait knee guard, and everyone laughed how terrible filmsy protection they are, well i didn’t, those were the first comfy ones that didn’t slide. I was riding down country in them by 2008.nobody laughs from soft pads these days. Many laugh from thise stupid Roach pads.

Comfortable protection = worn protection. If your sponsor can’t get that then sorry. Fk him and his business

 @Matt115lamb:

Before I sign up, can I please read the team policy on when riding is too gnarly so that I need to pad up? What guidelines do you have for fullface helmets? Where do you draw the line? Xc, Down country, Enduro, you know what I mean... but to be honest if you were to keep your racers safe, the first thing I would suggest is don’t let them do road biking, the statistics are rather grim.

Anyhoo, I wish you and your racers all the best may your season be as easy as your view on when to and when not to pad up Smile

WAKIdesigns says:

I like you, we are very similar, however just like me you fall short with your assumptions as soon as you elaborate them further. Data shortage. I just wanted to prove to you that you cannot hurt me more than I can hurt myself. Race me? Uneducated? Trumpian? Coward? Honestly? Do people actually get intimidated when you speak to them this way or you just haven't tried it in real life? You talk like a 16 year old looking for a fight. Do you know how many "discussions" like that I have had? What the hell do you think you're doing here? Trying to outsmart a fool in his own game? You can try to get on your high horse all you want. Many many tried, I am just typing sht online, I don't give a flying f*ck what people like you think of me, I am just entertaining myself. Maybe because I got more friends than enemies by putting a stick into an anthill... journos, engineers from bike companies, sales reps, mechanics and racers on WCup race. and I will care about you?

You took a wrong turn man.

Oh and no hard feelings... honestly, you're just another pissed off dude. I can understand that. Make this a better day for yourself and ignore me.

Really hope he heals up soon but come on, you must wear protection riding those kind of trails at the kind of speed those guys do with so little practice time. I'll admit to hating elbow pads, best ones I've ever had still have mediocre ergonomics and comfort but wouldn't do without on stuff I don't know that well or know is gnarly. If I was sponsoring a rider I'd insist, both to protect the rider and the investment of made in them.
  • 2 0
The sponsor comment is actually a good point
  • 4 2
I haven't broken my elbow, but i came close once (I wasn't wearing pads). Haven't gone riding without pads since, and unless I'm just biking easy/flat stuff, I wear my full face helmet. Honestly, my pads are very comfy, (my full face is more of a nuisance than the pads, and that only because of restricted airflow), but even my other pads that aren't as comfortable, I put up with it. An injury to those areas just isn't worth it. Spine, brain, knees/elbows (major joints with tons of nerves)... There's a reason why we've got full face helmets, spine protectors, neck braces, and pads. I'm not saying that all of that is needed for all or even most riding... heaven knows I don't use all that.. the riding that requires such protection is a small percentage, and pros are normally protected decently well, but when I see people riding crazy trails without such simple things as (mostly elbow) pads, with such nasty results, actual or potential, it just makes me cringe. Rather needless risk in my opinion. Frown Best wishes for a relatively painless, full, and speedy recovery Adrien.
  • 3 1
It’s like anything in this life. Up to the individual what protection they think suitable for the occasion.

I’m of the mind anything can happen on the trail at any time so full face, elbow ,knee/shin pads, REGARDLESS. In the event of creaming in !! I know I have taken all measures possible to reduce the severity.

Wishing Adrien Dailly rapid recovery !! Incredible! rider balls of steel!
  • 3 1
Like a good buddy once said. "you can always buy new bits and pieces, but you can't fix a broken body". If in doubt get protection. Replace pads every few years and lids every five or after a drop. And my word that looks painful. I hope he heals fast and does not loose too much movement.
  • 1 0
Dropping a helmet doesnt require it to be replaced.
  • 1 0
 Ouch! Sh1tty buzz dude Frown

I'm assuming the type of surgery was ORIF? That can take a while to heal and get back ROM/strength. Being a 'pro athlete' you'll prolly have access to great physio/treatment and can hopefully get back sooner than an armchair dingus like myself.

Sending PMV your way dude!
