Bummed I didn't win, but I think it's awesome that PB put together this giveaway this year. Congrats to all the winners! Hope PB does it again next year.

HOW DID I NOT WIN!? THERE WERE LIKE A MILLION PRIZES!!!

Thanks Obama.
  • 24 8
your chances were actually the same for winning one random contest and winning one of the 25 days here, because there are 25x more prices than one single contest but also 25x more entrants, because people entered every day, not one chance to enter for the whole month. funny how probability is a bitch. thanks obama.

flag Median (Jan 13, 2015 at 19:34) (Below Threshold)
yes, but your odds are still 25x's better than if there was only one draw
  • 14 9
no, they're not- if there is one draw, with one prize and say 10,000 entrants, your chance would be 1 in 10,000. if you have 25 draws with one prize each and 10,000 entrants each, your chances are 25 in 250,000- same thing as 1 in 10,000.
  • 9 2
Your statistics are a bit off.
  • 4 6
24 times better than 1 draw
  • 8 3
think about it. its 25 single contests, with roughly the same number of people are entering every day with the same number of winners each day (with a few exceptions).

If you have one prize and you are one of ten people who enter to win it, your chance of winning is 1 in 10. the next day, there's a contest with one prize and you are one of ten people who enter to win it: same chance, 1 in 10. So if you enter that same contest 25 times, you have 25 opportunities to win but your chances of winning remain the same every day. Really not that f*cking hard.
  • 10 6
if your chances of winning are 1 in 10 and you enter one, you probably aren't going to win. If your chances of winning are 1 in 10 and you enter 25 contests, you are likely to win 2.5 times. Your likelihood of winning does go up....
  • 8 3
So if I play the lottery every week my chances get better each week?

No.

@mfbeast12 couldn't have said it better
  • 18 0
Your chance of winning might not increase each week but the probability that you win over a life time are higher than someone who bought only one lottery ticket. It's called a Binomial distribution, let say p your chance of winning a single event and n the number of event you participate, the probability of winning k of the n events is p^k * (1-p)^k * C where C is constant (calculated as n chose k) that consider all the possibilities (whether you win on the first try or on the 10th try). If you compute P(N > 0) you would realise that it is higher than p. Anyway, this went way too far and I wished I won, maybe next year ahah!
  • 8 1
Your chances in each draw remain the same, but if you entered 24 times you're obviously more likely to come up a winner (not 24 times more likely though, it follows a binomial distribution).

Think about rolling a die - are you more likely to roll a six with one throw or with ten throws?

Yes - if you play the lottery every week you're clearly more likely to win something over the course of a year then if you only entered once.
  • 1 0
When it is an "or" you add the fractions i.e. If the chances of winning competition A is 1/10 the chances of winning competition B is 1/10. The chances of winning Competition A OR B is 2/10. You have a higher chance of winning one if you enter both, that much should be obvious though.

When it is an "and" you multiply the fractions so the chances of winning competition A AND B would be 1/100.
  • 7 1
F**kyeah someone wrote Binomial distribution on Pinkbike!! Quantum chromodynamics is next up. But someone will complain about cost... :o)
  • 1 1
Great competition - cant believeyou didnt even have to be a professional photographer or live in the US to enter!
  • 2 1
awesome i didnt win... i hope the winners gets there stuff cuz there is a difference between winning and getting the prize!
  • 5 1
@mfbeast12 I love how confident you were in your right answer. @bikervince101 was correct. Take the simple example where there are 25 days and a 1/10 chance of winning. The probability of winning at least one time is 1-(the probability of not winning on any day). Therefore, by the binomial theorem the probability is 1-.9^25=about .93. So there would be about a 93% chance of winning at least one time.
  • 2 5
@jcc0042 what the f*ck? if there is a 93% chance of winning how come only 55 people won? way more than 59 people entered... the thing a lot of you are forgetting is that people were entering every day, not just once for the whole contest... if it was one contest with 25 prizes, yeah, your chances would be higher but still pretty slim. this isn't one big contest, it's 25 individual contests with a similar chance of winning because people could and did enter way more than once.

@bikervince101 think about it like this: if you enter 10 contests each with 10 people in them, that doesn't mean you'll win, because they are independent of each other. @CameronRose 's example was on point, if there is a lottery with 10,000 people and you enter 10,000 of those lotteries, that in no way means that you will win, because they don't keep pulling names out of the same hypothetical hat, they switch hats every time.
  • 5 1
@mfbeast12 you have not understood statistics.

jcc's 93% came from a hypothetical with only 10 entrants.

Entering a 1/10,000 chance lottery 10,000 times would give you a statistical likelihood of winning once out of all those times i.e. the most likely outcome is that you will win once. If you ran that same scenario an arbitrarily large number of times the average number of wins in each would be 1.

No, each outcome doesn't effect the others and there is every chance you might not win at all, it is also possible that you win all 10,000. Saying it is statistically likely is not saying it is guaranteed, saying it is statistically unlikely is not saying it is impossible.
  • 3 1
What a shitstorm. Can we ride bikes instead?
  • 3 0
 @cameronrose , statistically-no
  • 1 1
 @bikervince101
@Patrick9-32

Hooray for logic!
  • 2 0
No, but they were much higher than if there were zero draws.
  • 1 1
haha yea i didnt mean 24 times like multiplied. i just mean your entering 24 more contests, instead of just one. lol some people understand
  • 1 0
better luck next time to me T_T
  • 41 1
control + F to search for your name just in case you doubted yourself and you thought they forgot to message you during the actual giveaway

Hope you lucky bastards enjoy your free stuff.
  • 16 0
that DJ bike from Canyon... holy crap its the dream
  • 12 1
did anyone outside of north america actually win.... or did they just cheap out on shipping.....
  • 4 0
I did, juicy lubes, and after a quick look through the names seems as if there were fair share of europeans. Was worried that they would ship it out of north america and it'd go through customs, but that wasn't the case, as it was shipped from the UK. Anyway I'd gladly paid customs fees for freebies, as it would still be a fraction of the retail price. Thanks PB for putting on this giveaway! Looking forward to this years....
  • 8 1
Well, time to go spend money on the prizes that I was hoping to win but didn't.
  • 8 1
There must be a mistake here...why isn't my name there for that Canyon Stitch Frown
  • 8 3
all those attempts and they kept mispelling "TFreeman"
  • 4 0
Hits control+F, "LindLTaylor", sees 1 result, gets excited and scrolls through... notices "Signed in as" in upper right corner, and now sad.

Congrats to winners though!
  • 2 0
Why are there so many PB users bitching that they didn't win?
It's a giveaway contest; lots of people enter, very few win. Kinda like the lottery, except it isn't pay - to - play. Vendors and sponsors put this on, and for that I am grateful. I didn't win anything, but for those who did free shit is good, right?

Thanks PW for putting this on, I hope that you continue the tradition for years to come, despite the whiney folks who didn't win.
  • 1 0
Since I didn't win this, it increases my chance of winning the Reign from the Share the Ride right? m i rite?!!! PLEASE?!!

Yup, awesome contest, can't wait for next year. Congrats to the winners. BTW more is always better than less, getting a head in 1 coin flip is 50/50 getting at LEAST 1 head in 100 flips is much more likely end of story.
  • 1 0
Thanks for the socks, shirt and hat, Pinkbike! The t-shirt has entered my regular rotation and allowed me to retire another, the socks keep my feet nice on rides and the hat... well, we'll need some sun soon.

how did you miss that.... hah!
