Anamoly Launch Crowdfunding for Their New Flat Pedal Shoes With Bold Claims

Aug 10, 2021
by Henry Quinney

A new company has come to the table with bold claims of grip, performance and style. Anamoly has created a kickstarter program that they hope will give them the funding they need to bring a new take on the flat pedal shoe to the market.

What do Anomaly Say?

Anomaly shoes will use their Hero Rubber technology, which they claim is the stickiest rubber compound on the planet to give riders “magnetic” levels of traction on their pedals. To look at, it shares a tread similar to other designs, but I imagine it will be the compound that will be really telling. It will be interesting to see how they stack up against the benchmark Five Ten Stealth rubber.

photo

They aim to pair this super-sticky compound to a style that they feel is lacking from some other company's offerings. They want to combine a technical item with a casual style to give a shoe that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb and have people thinking “kook” should you run into a cafe. Some of the designs, they say, were inspired by frame-protection kits that you may have seen livening up the look of somebody’s bike. They further combine this with mud and water-resistant properties and a thermo-welded and stitchless construction.

photo

There are also features to keep your feet protected and comfortable including a toe-cap, areas of perforation to let your feet breathe and a high-medial insole that aims to absorb some of the lumps and bumps you may come across on the trail.

photo

The shoe has been in the works for two and a half years and hopes to secure funding over a 30 day period. Structured pledges start from around $100. Once the campaign is successfully funded, there will be a lead time of around three to four months.

"They want to combine a technical item with a casual style to give a shoe that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb and have people thinking “kook” should you run into a cafe."

Makes a shoe that is red and grey with zebra stripes, or electric blue with a white sole.

Well, technically they are right. When I have a sore thumb I don't put a shoe on it.

Do people really still care that much about what other people think of their shoes when they're out riding?
  • 23 1
I mean really. Imagine you’re out riding in cycling clothes, on a bicycle and you go into a shop for a coffee or something and people see you and think “oh look, a cyclist”. I mean how embarrassing. If only a company would make clothes and shoes for cycling that made one look like a Mormon missionary out to covert people. You know beige slacks, Oxford shoes and nice white shirt and tie. With a Chris King tie clip. And women in a gingham dress.

The shape of the shoes, as well, is something i can only describe as "Those Nikes from Back to the Future II"

That said, I've never been super worried about whether my shoes fit in with the normies. but the irony is thick.

I laughed at that claim too......perhaps they're being inversely ironic? I'd not be caught dead wearing those anywhere but the mortuary

I don't understand how this Or that shoe is stylish. It looks bad, like an orthopedic shoe. Most normal looking flat pedal shoe to me is the Shimano GR5. To bad it's a to floppy shoe. That said I hate all shoes who are to low. Most shoes won't goe over the ankles. With shoes like that I don't have have of the trail in my shoes after a few minutes of riding. If conditions are really bad , the mud also won't shove it self into between the shoe and socks. ..

@Chr1sArm: What ever happened to that good old White Colored shoe???
Look Chris, if a person really feels the need to have zebra stripes on his or her shoes, they could easily paint some stripes onto good old white shoes.
The Big companies are finally starting to get back to these basics of putting out a white shoe.
Look, the overall profile of the shoe looks good.
But the zebra stripes mixed with red lightning bolts????? Really???
Red lightning bolts with zebra stripes on a gray shoe, is something my great grand dad would give to my little kids on their 4th birthday.

If memory serves me right a flat pedal shoe with:
- boa/no laces
- weather proof top cover
- inside ankle protection
- Adidas Samba-esque styling
- muted colours
- quick drying materials
- grippy rubber but supportive midsole
- fairy lights? Or was that different post?

There you go, kickstart that and you'd have the backing of every PB flat-pedaller!!
  • 8 6
With the exception of the boa, Ride Concepts already does all these.

Grippy rubber that has durability and stays stuck to the shoes. A lot of people were upset with 5.10 about the models with "mission impossible" rubber because it shredded easy, and the soles peeled off very quickly.
  • 1 1
@groghunter: agree , had my gr9’s over 2 years and still in good nik

 nailed it.
  • 2 0
@thustlewhumber: I don't believe you where is the shoe that is high enough for ankle protection? As they are descents from 5.10, I really doubt they have quick drying material.

I don't understand how most shoes are not going higher like standard boot's with flexible ankle cover. Like the Adidas 5.10 Trail Cross Mid Pro.
With this shoe my shoe wont pick up the trail in seconds. Mud also won't stuck Into it.

 1. I don't like brands that shit on other brands. Like we saw clearly he was holding a FiveTen shoe while saying it perform like shit. (In my oppinion: FiveTen are the most performant shoes. Just the rubber that contain a single big ass hole after 4 months...)
2. That's not hero dirt. That's just absolut normal dry compact dirt.
3. I stopped watching right after he threw his knife because that made absolute no sense in a bike video. (I don't want to understand)
  • 2 1
@brewson7 Hi there, Chris here - the Founder.

1. To clarify, we've never bashed on any other brand. What we simply mentioned was the lack of options on the marketplace, and many brands cutting the quality of their rubber quality (at the expense of rider's safety), and have had numerous poor quality control (QC) complaints regarding build quality. Jonny used what he had at hand to get the point across (a creative decision, you could say).
2. We shot the video on a very limited budget and in a limited time frame. There are definitely some rainy shots, like where Elliott Heap was riding in the mud during the last Beast Mode sequence. You can also see Hero Dirt referenced on the Kickstarter page, where I had a bad crash and went OTB due to slipping a pedal and crappy rubber on the pair of MTB shoes I bought up at the Whistler village (Specialized 2FO).
3. This is because the all-black style is called 'Ninja,' which is a play on the trail at Whistler called Samurai Pizza Cats (named after the 90's morning kids' cartoon). We like to have fun and not take ourselves too seriously, as much of the bike industry has been becoming in the last few years.

 A few thoughts:

I'm pretty sure they're getting sued for copyright infringement with that outsole.
Don't start your entry into the bike community by insulting a bunch of other brands. Just be good on your own.
So glad he (sort of) knows what hero dirt is?
This video is annoying and I wasted time watching it, but finishing up by saying the bike shoe has been redefined is a stretch, there is literally nothing new here, just claims of being better.
Also maybe it works for you, but not my style.
  • 1 1
@Rudy2455 Hi there, Chris here - the founder.

Copyright infringement? Coin grip pattern has been around long before MTB shoes: duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=coin+grip+pattern&iax=images&ia=images

We didn't insult one brand or the other, we simply made a general statement about the lack of options and (some) brands cutting their quality and having many quality complaints lately. This is what gave us the passion and the drive to undertake the risks to make something like this happen. We're underdogs here, and we're passionate as all can be. How do you think Gary Fischer got started, or how the original 'mountainbike' came to be about? A bunch of finance guys wearing suits in a boardroom making decisions about what riders want? Or brave, passion-fueled 'derelicts' who challenged convention and wanted to bring about a whole new movement?

Does anyone else have a hard time believing this new wave of shoe manufacturers aren't just glorified drop shippers? These guys look like the picked through the same catalog as Ride Concepts...
  • 1 1
Hi - I'm Chris, the founder. No drop shippers here. We're a SoCal based company and I'm a rider and a frequenter of PinkBike just like most of you are here. No affiliation with RC at all. We designed these shoes from the ground up over a 2 year period, and put up a huge capital investment developing the prototypes over multiple rounds of iterations to dial them in as a result. We're underdogs here and are entirely self-funded and bootstrapped. This is the reason we're turning to Kickstarter — no such rich uncle or dad to provide the initial upfront $150k seed money like the founder of another brand in this industry had at his disposal (now owned by a large multi-national). I'm as blue-collar as they come, and took the risk and put up the investment myself. Can any of the other detractors in this comment thread say the same?

Anyway, there's much more of the story on why we chose to launch on Kickstarter on the actual campaign page: www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

@Chr1sArm: Where are the shoes made and why is it so hard to find this from the Kickstarter?

 Buzz, your girlfriend, WOOF!
  • 8 0
I hope their marketing guy is reading this thread. If they dialed back the design graphics a bit and got a Head-to-Head comparison with 5.10 done by PinkBike, and if it was favorable... then they would not need KickStarter because they would be sold out for a year.
  • 2 0
Hi, I'm Chris - the founder. Also that 'marketing guy' you speak of. We do have quite a few toned down graphic options, including an all-black version (Ninja), black / gum sole version (A-Line Gum), and classic black / red version (Moto). The wild ones were thrown out there do take a risk, do something bold, and experiment with something new and different. The Aloha is actually the #1 favorite style of all, funnily enough, despite the severe amounts of trash talk going on in this comment thread...

Unfortunately for a head-to-head comparison, we're definitely all for it, but unfortunately there are only two pairs of each of these (Men's sample size 9) that exist — and they're currently with Jonny and his team in the UK. The Kickstarter is only running for another 25 days, so having the prototype pairs sent from the UK to PB offices and happening to find a rider who's size 9 within the short period we'll need funding by is slim to none. But, after the campaign wraps up (pending successful funding so we'll have the capital to open the different sole sizes), we definitely plan to send a pair over to the crew at PB for a full review like you speak of.

So we're at a chicken and egg problem. I don't have a rich uncle, and I come from as blue collar of a background as they come — so I don't personally have $60k to just whip up and get these made (I wish I did). This is why we're turning to Kickstarter, as the website allows for pre-orders by micro-investors or 'backers' worldwide, aka the 'crowdfunding community.'

Anyway, there's much more of the story on why we chose to launch on Kickstarter on the actual campaign page. We have 25 days left to reach our funding goal, so I hope you'll consider backing us and giving the underdog a chance! www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

Hi, I'm Chris - the founder. We spent a lot of time perfecting our rubber formula with some of the best rubber specialists and processing plants in our supply chain, so I think you'll be pleasantly surprised Smile

I'm a serious rider myself, and I don't bullshit. The idea came for these because I took a really bad crash on my 30th birthday (back in 2017) at Whistler on the first day — which essentially ruined the remainder of the week-long trip. It was a particularly rainy season and was quite muddy and wet when my riding buddies and I were up there. I bought a pair of Specialized 2FO's, and the rubber was garbage on them! My feet dismounted and I went OTB on a big jump on A-Line. Ever since that experience, I always wanted to design a shoe with rubber that became stickier when wet, to prevent that same bad experience from happening to others.

Anyway, there's much more of the story on the actual campaign page (including photos from the trip before the crash happened). We have 25 days left to reach our funding goal, so I hope you'll consider backing us and giving the underdog a chance! www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

Agree with all this. Ever since the Karver I feel like it's been a scramble to find a shoe with a lace cover and some inside ankle protection. GR9 is about all we have these days...
  • 2 0
Gave up on finding shoes with lace covers. Just make a lace cover out of a bit of old inner tube. Put small holes in each corner and use tiny zip ties to attach to the eyelets. Works excellently and actually looks half decent.
  • 1 0
@G-Sport: I've thought about this method for a long while just never executed it, thanks for bringing it back to my attention! I figure you could even find another chunk of waterproof material too if wanted to get fancier.
  • 1 0
I'm Chris - the founder. We're still taking suggestions and input since we haven't yet committed to mass production. I'm all ears and have been an avid frequenter of PinkBike myself over the years. We'll take your comment into consideration. These were actually designed to do well in extreme rain/mud conditions, by utilizing waterproof materials for the upper, seamless welded (thermo-bonded) construction, taped internal seams, etc.

Sadly we can't bring everything everyone wants into one single shoe / shoe launch, since the costs would just be way too exorbitant. So if not on this line, than on a follow up '2.0 version.' More details here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly
  • 1 0
@Chr1sArm: you will sell more if you give us a lace cover since that is an option every other brand lacks. Seriously, heed my words.
  • 1 0
@hi-dr-nick: Thanks for the suggestion. This was actually requested a few different times. We'll consider it for the next batch of production and/or a second roll-out of new styles, once we're able to go to market with our first production batch — which is currently set for Q4, or by the end of year 2022.
  • 6 0
All these brands trying to get in the MTB shoe market. If one wants to actually differentiate themself, they should try making a shoe shaped like a foot.
  • 5 0
I don't get the kickstarter. The more you pledge, the less you save on the shoe? Am I missing something LOL.
  • 4 0
So if I get them to give me money, I get free shoes?
  • 1 1
Hi, I'm Chris - the founder. I'm a PinkBike user just like you guys are. Been following the site for years and am an avid rider myself. Been in the footwear design industry for over 8 years. To clarify your question, the reason we're launching on Kickstarter is because we're a tiny startup company without a rich uncle or without the funding to pay upfront for the costs associated with bringing a product line like this to market. For instance, one of the founders of one of the top competing brands out there received $150,000 in initial startup capital funding to launch his company (which has since been bought by a multinational).

Anyway, developing a line of prototypes like these in multiple different colorways, through about 10 iterations each to dial everything in is not cheap. Those upfront costs were entirely bootstrapped by myself. I was forced to sell my mountain bike and all of my gear, as well as many other belongings just to finance those early designs. I've also been dedicated full time to getting this thing off the ground, which means no steady paycheck coming in for the two years we were developing them. Would anyone else here on PB be willing to take such a risk?

So the $60k we're asking for is to cover the costs of the full size run of mold 'tooling' to make the outsole, as well as to order all of the materials which will comprise what's known as the 'upper' of the shoe. The way Kickstarter works is it allows micro investors, or what are known as 'backers' to pre-order the product at a discounted price before it's ever released publicly to market — thereby funding the initial investment needed to 'kickstart' a new idea, invention, startup company, etc. — without the need for venture capital, angel investors, private equity, etc. who would end up taking an equity stake in the company and relinquishing control from the original, early stage founders.

We took a huge risk on this line, yes, but that's because we're tired of seeing the same old same old that's on the market. Inspiration for these came not only from MTB frame protectors, but from the ski/snowboarding industry, where louder graphics are the norm. And yes, we're offering the standard all black (Ninja) and black / gum styles (A-Line Gum). There's much more you can take a look at for yourself here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

Well made promo video! And I thought the shoes looked really good on the riders… they are growing on me now. If you’re gunna have regular laces then I recommend some version of the Solomon ‘lace-garage’ (tongue pocket)that you tuck the extra laces into, I know that lace locker thing is better than nothing but big bows and strings are just ugly and floppy and not a good look down I feel. I sure would like to try out the grip !
  • 1 0
Hi, I'm Chris - the founder. Appreciate the kind words! It's reassuring after seeing all of the negativity and sarcasm on this comment section....

Yes, the product actually looks and feels much better in person. Jonny and his crew did a great job on the video, so hat tip to him. It was a strange creative brief, but they took it and ran with it. Regarding your stretch lace pocket integrated into the tongue — we still haven't committed to mass production, so this is a change we could definitely implement (pending successful funding).

That said, we only have 25 days left to reach our funding goal — so I hope you'll consider backing us and giving an underdog a chance! www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

Why would anyone spend roughly the same money as the price of a competitor's shoe they can actually go try on (or order online and send back if it doesn't fit if they don't have an LBS that stocks them) on a Kickstarter shoe that may or may not result in a shoe you've never tried on being delivered to you 3 months hence?

 Nice PeP stores specials.
Jeez nice wheelies!
They found Neil Armstrongs missing moon boots.
Do they have lights in the soles that start blinking when you land drops?
The zebra print is fine... if you're a zebra in the savannah trying to blend in to not be eaten by a lion.
Or for a trophy hunters man room.
Or crocodile dundees hat?

Anyways good luck to them.

I ran 5-Ten for around 6 years prior to my 2FO Specialized, and the 2FO's rubber is miles better than any 5-Ten stealth rubber i've used in the past. I also have Shimano GR9's with Michelin rubber, despite the shoe itself being more comfortable, the Michelin rubber and tread design are just no where near the grip or dampening of the 2FO. Glad to see a new brand come to market! Healthy competition breeds innovation.

Yep I agree the 2fo are fantastic. I got mine on close out and they cost me next to nothing. I can’t deal with 5.10’s wear behaviour any more than I can deal with crank brothers rebuilds. I look forward to to trying out ride concepts shoes sometime.
  • 2 1
2fo s rubber is good, but don’t you think the sole is too thick? I feel disconnected from the pedal compared to my trusty old freerider elements
  • 1 0
My wife went from 5.10s to the GR9s. She regretted the GR9s by a quarter of the way down the first trail because she felt not just slippy, but unsafe. Anyone want to buy a women's size 7 pair of GR9s? They're awesome! *

* not true.
  • 2 0
@short-but-sweet: it’s not something that sticks out when I use them. I alternate between 2fo and some NB “work” sneakers. The NB are definitely thinner and give more feedback but I am also really happy with my 2fo. Once I point my way down a trail I feel lots of grip and don’t feel any significant difference between them. They both sort of disappear from my mind. I’ve got a pair of Scott flat shoes waiting for me at home, so I will be able to let you know soon.

@Afterschoolsports: cool do keep the thread going. I’ve used the following: various older 5:10s, vans, northwave clans, specialised 2FO, ride concepts vice, and now the current 5:10 freerider pros.

My experience so far: nothing beats old thin soled sticky 5:10s . My freerider elements were just brilliant, my faves- but I recently wore them to death. New pros are almost as good. Clans and 2FO s ok but simply don’t grip. Ditto ride concepts . Vans … they were good enough back in the day I guess

I’ve taken to buying old model 5:10s on eBay, got some VXIs on the way… excited.
  • 1 0
@short-but-sweet: I used to use 5.10’s but they just wear out too quickly to keep using. I’ve found a Spec dealer that sells basically only city and road bikes, but has the full clothing range. So every 18 months or so I get 2fo’s for nothing.

For summer my preferred shoes are these NB’s, amazing grip and more protection than skate shoes. Not quite as much as fr pros. You get them on special all the time for $80aud, often at Jim Kidd if you’re in Perth! The best thing is they’re tax deductible for many people.

Call me when the all black non fashion colors come out.
  • 2 0
@ReeferSouthrland Hi there, Chris here - the founder. Yes, we're offering the standard all black (Ninja) and black / gum styles (A-Line Gum). Those are actually #3 and #2 in terms of popularity so far, right behind the Hawaiian print design (Aloha) which is #1. Originally the toned-down colorways were planned as add-on or 'stretch goals' in addition to what we'd need to meet our original $60k funding goal. Reason being is because I thought those to be a bit boring a typical, and we wanted to make a big eye-catching splash by taking a risk and doing something different. Someone had to do it, hahaha!

But, we've since shifted our strategy and are going to produce the TOP FOUR colorways/styles, which will be dependent on an audience/crowd vote that will come through a post-campaign survey (aka 'backer survey'). So, due to current popularity, Ninja and A-line gum (the 'non fashion colors' as you call them) are likely to make the cut.

There's much more you can take a look at for yourself here on the actual campaign page, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised: www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

 Lots of hate for these…….geez.

I’d be stoked if someone…ANYONE made shoes with grip as good as 5.10. I like Freerider Pros but wish there were other options.
  • 1 0
I ran my last shoes until they were nearly through the foam under the rubber, now anything is gonna be grippier
  • 1 0
I'd be happier if 5.10 made shoes with grip as good as 5.10: Freerider Contact
  • 1 0
Try Unparalleled, they're the OG 5.10 designers that jumped ship when addidas bought them. I think they retain the proprietary stealth rubber compound as well.
  • 1 0
@wyorider Hi there, I'm Chris - the founder.

Blah, blah, blah, no lace covers. The End.
  • 1 0
If the soles stay on without having to do my annual shoe-goo repairs I’d be into them.
Covered w riding wounds/scuffs and mud, I’d get over some of the “louder” look at me patters.
  • 2 0
The longer the time from completion to delivery, the less change there is you'll actually get something. I wouldn't trust this Kickstarter.
  • 2 0
That video was painful. Judging by the comments this is a prime example on how to fail at at new product. Although they can’t be any worse than ride concepts.
  • 2 0
I'm curious what angular momentum coupling (Clebsch-Gordon coefficients) have to do with shoe design. Did they think we wouldn't notice that at 1:55. Sheese.
  • 1 0
Scrolled through the comments... How come nobody noticed that the company's name is Anamoly and PB text refers to them twice as Anomaly? I guess the video and the looks of the show drew all the attention.
  • 1 0
Because our brains run 'autocorrect' just like PB's text editors. Funnily I tried to google "Anamoly Shoes" to see if the company already exist making anything (they don't) and Google didn't want a bar of the mis-spelling, sent me off looking for Anomaly Shoes (with results made by Under Armour as well as an existing brand ANMLY).

 Only Men's Sizes US 6-12 I need US14
  • 5 0
 +1. No, literally +1 as I need US15.
  • 1 0
@klaus79856 Hi there Klaus, Chris here - the founder. We've actually been getting quite a few requests for larger sizes — US 14 and 15 in particular. The $60k funding goal is to cover x4 colorways in sizes 6-12 only, but we could definitely offer the larger sizes M's US 13, 14, and 15 if additional funding levels or 'stretch goal' is reached. The lack of larger sizes seems to be a sore point within the industry (new to me!).

Anyway, there's much about that on the actual Kickstarter campaign page, under the Rewards section (right below Colorways). We have 25 days left to reach our funding goal, so I hope you'll consider backing us and giving an underdog a chance! www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

ugh.. these are so ugly. Why does every mtb shoe look like shit. And why do they all insist on using circles as an outsole tread design... LAME!
  • 2 0
I got very confused because there already is a skate shoe brand called Anamoly (well, ANMLY), but this clearly isn’t it.
  • 9 0
 Hmmmm, that is an anomaly.

If the two brands merge we have another CLLCTV on our hands/feet

I think I'd stick with my etnies culvert mid. Simple design and black with a hint of color. Only issue is the laces are not covered but other then that love the shoes.

Is there even one shoe that is wide? I use two sizes to big that my feet have at least space to get into the shoe

Such ugly f*cking shoes, sorry if that’s harsh.

They could be super awesome and I’ll never by them over five tens as they are just hideous.

Gave up when I saw the baggy laces wtf fix it
  • 1 0
@WelshClemo Hi there, Chris here - the founder. The laces are a bit long because these are prototypes you see and we needed to pull the laces from another shoe to match the colors for the photoshoot and video.

The lace length will be fixed in production. We've also made several other design changes based on rider feedback and customer requests - including cleaning up the front sole toebox portion, and widening the last to fit an E or EE size foot. You can take a look at more of our full story and why we're so passionate about building a better MTB shoe here on the Kickstarter page: www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly

 If it's not wide, I don't give a shit.
  • 2 0
 @melikebikealot14
Hi there, Chris here - the founder. There have been many requests for a wider fit, actually. We plan to widen up the last to fit a size E to EE foot. We posted about this in one of our updates on Kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/anamoly/the-mountain-bike-shoe-redefined-anamoly/posts/3276791

We're definitely listening to all rider / customer feedback and making updates and adjustments accordingly. Hope you'll consider backing us!

Does no one ride SPD anymore? The flat shoe to spd shoe ratio is like 10/1.
  • 1 0
Do you mostly ride with people who race often? Cuz outside of that, I generally find it about 50/50, flats vs SPD..
