Andes Pacifico Enduro: Day One - Anti Grip, We Meet Again

Feb 12, 2015
by Dave Trumpore
It's hot. It's really, really hot. 75 riders from 15 countries are here in Chile for four days of riding and over 10,000 meters of descending for the Andes Pacifico Enduro. The days are long, (and hot) with everyone up at 6am, riding by 7 and finishing in the late afternoon.

The anti-grip dirt, made famous during the Enduro World Series last year is still here. It's dry, it's dusty and it's oh so slippery.

Day one comprised of 4000 meters of descending over 5 stages and began in the high Alipne of the La Parva Ski Area. Stages 1-3 would course its way down this zone. A shuttle then took the riders up to stages 4 and 5 which were steep, rugged and conducive to lots of crashes. Stage 5 was a monster with over 100 switchbacks that took around 15 minutes to conquer.

Your day one leaders: Fabien Barel and Florencia Espineira.

Is Chile going to be a venue for EWS next year? If so anyone has plans to go? Its year away its enough time to save and plan a good mtb trip.

So many top names, so many heroes. The season is gonna be deadly. It is a pity Chile wont be included this year. Its such a contrast to Scotland/Ireland and mainland Europe truly makes it a World Series. Lets hope its back for 2016

Great photos, but the landscape sure helps. By the way, this race was not the one that was part of the EWS last year, that was further south near Neavados de Chillan, a more traditional "alpine type" geography. I think the Andes Pacifico is a much longer and difficult race than what EWS normally hosts and that might turn out to be better. I look at this race as a stand alone event that may turn to be one of the most challenging Enduro events in the world, sort of a Dakar race for Mountain Biking. I do hope EWS brings back Nevados de Chillan to the 2016 calendar. So many of the riders called it the best race of 2014 and I think it should be a fixture in the EWS calendar.

Who had the two events confused ?

The "Dakar" of Enduro. I have no doubt. But brands have to put money on the table and make this event bigger every year

It's fantastic to see how the sport is growing here. The anti-grip conditions only apply to the summer months for those who want to come. Great pics! This country of Chile has it all!

I'm curious about what the duration/elevation gain of the transfers were for this?

Looks can certainly be deceiving, especially when real mountains are involved, but the transfers here look relatively mild, at least on the profile graphic.

Can anyone elucidate?

It is nahuatl for little heart. Its a beautifull name in the context of its native language, I personally like it. Unfortunaly in Latinamerica naming kids with preconquest names is most of the times frowned upon.
