Rampage Qualifiers Rampage Qualifiers
The Utah desert morning provided a chilly start for us, but the athletes were already at the day 1 arena as early as 6am digging and sculpting their preferred lines. We made our way up the hill, positioning ourselves to witness local home boy, Bendito (aka Bender, aka Josh) throw his meat off the newest line creation the Bendetonator (the man line), spectators passed rumors that its a 60 foot gapper. As we waited anxiously, we found out through reliable sources that Benditto had a flat rear tire so the line-up changed and Wade Simmons was the first rider to kick off the qualifiers.

More of Princess for a Day - Finishing the Triple More of Princess for a Day - Finishing the Triple Crown
So where were we, or more correctly, where the hell was I, and what the hell was I doing there? Oh yeah, that's right, I was suffering at the bottom of Pulmonary. While those around me were high-fiving, laughing and chatting, I elected to ride on into town, desperately in need of some well worn shoes, flat pedals and and big head start. It took them all of about 3 minutes to catch me. While I tried to hang with half dozen or so riders "drafting", Travis pushed me along easing my pain and foot numbness somewhat. It was at the "Welcome to Nelson" sign I parted ways with the group...

More October Product Goodness More October Product Goodness
Over the past few months I’ve had the opportunity to try out a few new goodies - some for my back, some for my bike, some for my head, some for my hands and, well, some for my nether regions. Now that summer is over and riding opportunities are slipping away for those of us in the Great White North, I figured it was time to do a roundup of a few new products I’ve had a chance to test out.

Princess for a Day - Riding the Triple Crown Princess for a Day - Riding the Triple Crown
If it wasn't clear before, it's abundantly clear now, I'm no ripping XC rider. No doubt about it, this particular white boy can't climb! You'd think with 12 years of riding experience I'd have come to grips with that fact. Apparently not, because somehow, in what must have been a severe moment of weakness, I signed up to do Nelson's Triple Crown event.

Pura Vida: Waves and Downhill Singletrack in Costa Pura Vida: Waves and Downhill Singletrack in Costa Rica
You are descending on a big freeride bike with the jungle zipping past your full-face helmet. The ground beneath your tires is moist and rooty with natural hits coming at you at every turn. You feel like your bike is an extension of your body; you are dialed today. While going through a puddle you hear the distinct sizzling sound of water hitting red-hot disk breaks and vaporizing. Or was it in your head?

Hayes El Camino - First Impressions from Gravity B Hayes El Camino - First Impressions from Gravity Bolivia.com
I recently had the good fortune of Hayes Disc Brake sending me a prototype version of the new Hayes El Camino 2005 Disc brakes. They popped a pair in the mail for me to test as they know that the massive downhill mountain bike rides here test any and all equipment -- especially brakes! We've run Hayes disc brakes here for many years and run through about 1,200-1,600 disc brake pads a year... so yup, we're doing a lot of braking out here.

In the cool of the evening and the warmth of the desert twilight background, filmmaker Tony “Milkman” shooting for DropIn T.V. set off to capture Trek sponsored rider Cam McCaul at the dirt jumps in Bootleg Canyon outside Boulder City, Nevada on day two of the Interbike Outdoor Demo. I thought it the perfect opportunity to shoot stills of Cam, and as it turned out his younger brother, Tyler McCaul.

Whistler Brings an Early Thanksgiving Whistler Brings an Early Thanksgiving
I have a lot to be thankful for: a season of riding almost injury-free; another year’s progression; some key new riding friends. And like the original settlers of Canada, people that we will soon honour with Thanksgiving Day, I’m thankful to have seen new lands – in this case, another B.C. mountain biking paradise, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

Crashin and Bashin the Streak'X Mute II Crashin and Bashin the Streak'X Mute II
Mountain biking is expensive, no question. Hell, just a frameset from many custom and mainstream builders alike can top well over $3000US - and that's just the frameset! Thankfully, there are some companies looking out for those of us without trust funds or six figure salaries. Companies building bikes worthy of pro-level abuse at mac and cheese prices. Complete bikes available for a fraction of what those high zoot framesets will set you back. Till now a virtual unknown in the North American market, Streak'X Bikes is one such company.
