Killswitch by Black Market Bikes - First Look! Killswitch by Black Market Bikes - First Look!
Source: Black Market Bikes

Black Market Bikes is proud to announce the the arrival of our prototype short travel frame...the “Killswitch”. We worked closely with Pablo Tafoya in developing our "Hammer-Link" design, creating a truly low profile suspension frame. The Hammer-Link provides 4 inches of rear wheel travel while maintaining a stiff, flickable feel with short 16” chainstays and the lowest seat height of any suspension frame....period. The Killswitch has the ability to be run single speed or geared for true versatility.

**Information Update - estimated US retail $1600 for the frame and spring 2010 as the release date if all goes well**

Banshee Legend MK1 review Banshee Legend MK1 review
Source: acair422.pinkbike.com

The Legend MK1 is Banshee’s first frame to foray into the downhill race scene, but I wouldn’t call the frame beginner's luck. Many recall the burliness of Banshee in past years, via models such as the Scream and Morphine. Since then the boys over there have been busy combining the knowledge of how to build a strong and stiff frame, while applying some weight savings techniques resulting in a definite contender.

Giro Gloves Giro Gloves
Fits like a glove? You bet...

First up lets clarify or not, as the case might be what "types" of gloves there are out there. You have all seen the huge knuckle and finger protection from Moto-X style gloves that have been adopted by the serious gravity descender and night club bouncer/doorman. Well, that was the case of days gone by, but it seems they are more into the lighter XC/All Mountain Glove these days. Visa Versa, you may often see the trail bandits fully protecting their paws...

Fluidride Cup #5 Fluidride Cup #5
"Return To The Hill" DH Story and Results

It was dry, fast and really dusty. Intense/Crankbrothers' Pro Bryn Atkinson and Speedy Beaver's Dawn Fidler take the pro classes as Fluidride's/Evil Luciano Worl takes the Junior Expert titles home. Several racers traveled the distance to race the now famous 'Dry Hill' trails located in beautiful Port Angeles WA and nobody left with a grumpy face. Well, maybe Kona's photographer who sustained a wicked torn up knee injury walking down the course was the only one...

Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #6 Kicking Horse Bike Park - Trail Crew Update #6
The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

Amazing what a bit of low pressure can do. After that long July drought, it rained for almost a week since my last blog. You could almost hear the earth sigh as she absorbed the precious liquid. That change to the soil texture allowed us to finally get a good grip on Superberm. We spent about 6 days filling bomb holes and patching and extending berms. Don't just take my word for it though, here are a couple messages left on the unofficial "official" Kicking Horse thread: "Superberm was in the best shape I've been on it!" & "Just rode Superberm today and it is MINT."

Rossland Fat Tire Festival is born! Rossland Fat Tire Festival is born!
by Ryan Kuhn

North American and Canadian Championships, BC Cups and the Rubberhead Classic – Rossland was once lauded as a premier destination for mountain bike racing in Canada. With infamous, technical courses and spanning single track, the small mountain community located in the southern Kootenay region of British Columbia was auspiciously dubbed the “Mountain Biking Capital of Canada.” After a hiatus from the competition scene, Rossland is pleased to announce the town’s first annual Fat Tire Festival September 5 and 6, 2009. The Festival will feature three events: the Dreadhead All-Mountain Challenge, Huck en Berries Bike Jam (slopestyle) and the 7 Summits poker ride.

Shimano SLX FC-M665 Crank Review Shimano SLX FC-M665 Crank Review
Source: Reece Wallace

Weighing in at under one kilogram, extremely stiff with Hollotech II technology, and designed to fit almost any mountain biker's budget, the Shimano SLX series cranks and bottom bracket cannot be beaten.

When my Shimano SLX cranks first arrived in the mail, I opened up the box and thought a mistake had been made. I thought that some cross country cranks had been shipped to me instead of the freeride cranks I was supposed to be reviewing. However, within the first ride it became obvious that Shimano has put a lot of R&D into their new SLX series.

British Athletes to train at World's First indoor BMX center. British Athletes to train at World's First indoor BMX center.
British Cycling and Manchester City Council, in partnership with New East Manchester, are putting final touches to an ambitious plan to build a £24 million National Indoor BMX Centre in Manchester's Sportcity in a bid to secure a world class BMX training facility for the GB Cycling Team and boost Manchester s position as the home of British Cycling.

If new plans for the National Cycling Center go through and funding is approved, the 110,000 square foot building will be the world's first purpose built indoor BMX track. It will sit alongside the Manchester Velodrome with a brand new purpose built office for British Cycling located in the link building between the two venues.

A Legend Passes A Legend Passes
It saddens me to share with you the loss of a giant in the bike community. On Tuesday, August 25th, my best friend and riding partner of the past 10 years passed away at the ripe old age of 15.

Over the past years, Harley had quietly amassed a body of work that rivals that of the great riding stars of our time. Her resume includes more appearances in bike media than I can possibly remember, but some of her more memorable appearances include multiple appearances in North Shore Extreme, Kranked, New World Disorder, the Pist-n-Broke movies, as well as the Ride Guide and Drop In. She also found her way into many print publications in Canada, the US, the UK, and even Japan and Germany.

Road Trippin’ the Thompson Okanagan, Part 4 Road Trippin’ the Thompson Okanagan, Part 4
Sunny Sun Peaks with Matt Hunter, Dylan Sherrard and Chayse Marshall

Fortuitous is a fantastic word and any opportunity to use it will be, by nature, a good one. If our tour of the Thompson Okanagan could be wrapped up in one word, it would have to be fortuitous. On our fourth and final day, we visited Sun Peaks and yeah, you guessed it, lady luck was on our side. We managed to snag not one but three killer riders – Matt Hunter, Dylan Sherrard and Chayse Marshall – to show us the park, shoot some footage and otherwise have a grand old time.

Symbiont - Hand made! Symbiont - Hand made!

Now the Ti Gearbox DH bike is still alive and kicking but can sometimes be a bit overkill for the amount of riding I do and the UK tracks, so this is my latest creation. I was inspired by the foes RS7, I always think their bikes look good, are well engineered and simple but effective. I also think there is a certain amount of "suspension envy" when it comes to DH, just because one bike has 9" of travel everyone wants it, regardless if it's way too much for what they are going to be riding.

I had what’s called a Plough fracture, an injury with an apparent 16% fatality rate, and one which more often results in neurological damage of some kind, from loss of feeling in limbs to partial or total paralysis. I was fortunate - somehow I’d broken my neck but not damaged any of the vital communication lines between the brain and the rest of the body.

Auspicious Beginnings:

Chances are if you’ve been riding a mountain bike for awhile, you’ve packed your bags, strapped a ridiculously expensive bike to a beater truck and set out on a road trip to explore fabled trails in far away lands. There’s an irony to the way we as bikers drive great distances to enjoy our pedal freedom. But carbon fat tire tracks aside, the road trip is ubiquitous to the sport of mountain cycling, and I for one am not about to abandon one of the cultural cornerstones of our sport and lifestyle.
