As Mega Avalanche 2010 approaches nearer and nearer the past 3 weeks has really been a rollercoaster ride and a half - from great times to really bad times! I write this blog absolutely gutted, gripping onto hope that will hopefully keep me going for the next few weeks!

Giant Slalom is a pretty unique event, especially when compared to its more commonly seen relative Dual Slalom. It's really all up to you. You're on a course by yourself, with nothing but your own brakes slowing you down. When the time comes you have to choose how fast to go, and in turn that decides what position you finish it. Here's a video that Ambrose Weingart put together showcasing the US Open's Giant Slalom course, and event.

I want to share my experience of a recent road trip of Scotland I did with Roger Gonzalez, the Vallnord resident pro rider in Andorra and the “Riders” magazine director from Catalunya, Alex Chavarria. I am a native Scot, but live in Barcelona. For years I have loved going to ride trails set up by the 7 Stanes and always make a point of visiting when I am back. I was therefore keen to show them that Fort William was only a small part of what Scotland has to offer, so we set off to investigate Scotland’s root treasures of mountain biking trails.

Kokanee Crankworx, in its seventh year is Whistler's largest summer festival and for mountain bikers of all ages and competitive backgrounds, event registration is now officially open. I noticed the Monster Energy Specialized guys ripping it up with their own Contour HD helmet cameras, so after sharing some words with them I got my hands on the footage.

It's day 1 of the US Open of MTB at Diablo Freeride Park here in Vernon, New Jersey. The thunder storms that threatened have held off so far and the track is duty and rough. A little rain at this point would help the track out tremendously. A who's who of mountain biking is here to try and take home a very nice pay check. Last weekend on May 16 was the 9th annual Ashland Spring Thaw DH in Ashland, Oregon. An already immensely popular event, registration this year filled up like no other, with 201 riders participating! Not only that, but the Southern Oregon Mountain Biking Association (SOMBA) - who put on the event every year, had the course better and faster than ever, allowing the riders to put on a singletrack shred fest!

A while ago a friend of mine bought a wheelset on ebay that came with some Specialized Clutch SX tires already installed. He didn't think much about them, figuring they were OEM throwaways, but out of curiosity he left them on for a ride and was pleasantly surprised. A few more rides and he was even more impressed. Road trip to Moab and fresh new Santa Cruz bikes in the shop!

At last check I was hard at it trying to prep the store for our Spring Sale. This was a big hit and everyone was happy. I was also enjoying some rare dry weather in March in Calgary and actually got to pound out a few rides. This was good as I was madly trying to get in shape for my first Moab trip in more than ten years. This trip was pretty unreal and we ended up doing 7 days in a row of riding. Check out some scenery below.

I got a chance to hang and shoot some photos with World Cup racer Curtis Keene for a few days last month. This was my first time working with a DH rider of this class. It was awesome to see how fast the trails can be shredded! To say the least, Curtis kills it. He rides a 2010 Specialized Demo 8 complete with SRAM, Gamut, DT Swiss, and Chromag components. Look for Keene at all of this year's World Cup races.

The trip started with some problems, like my bike not making it to our final destination, Rob's three temporary teeth falling off and Rene missing one flight and arriving in Cusco one day later. Our problem solver, Alistair Matthew, sorted things out so I was able to ride some oldtimer bikes until my bike arrived on Thursday and Rob had an interesting visit at a local dentist. Cycling BC's support for the developing downhill riders paid off this weekend in the first Canada Cup of the season at Mt. Tremblant.

BC owned the podium with the Junior Men sweeping eight of the top twelve spots, a 2nd in women's elite, and two 1st for women in Junior and U17. In addition, the top three Elite Men were from BC. More inside,

Summer in Whistler is unreal, in every sense of the word. The riding is unreal, the town is unreal, and the women are everywhere. It is also one of the most photographed and filmed locations in Mountain Biking. When Dylan and I were invited to stay with Bear Back Biking for opening weekend we knew the creative challenges that lay ahead. The goal was to take a fresh look at the bike park.

The Drift X170 is an interesting package with some features that make it stand out from other cameras. For example, packing a 170 degree wide angle lens that has 360 degree rotation. This allows you to always have the image the right way up when filming which is important with the camera's 16:9 wide screen filming mode. Two video file types are supported, MP4 or MJEG AVI at 30 FPS. The body is wrapped in protective rubber outer making it waterproof to 0.5 meters.

I am sitting at home writing after a long first day as “The Camp of Champions Blog Writer”. It was a day filled with tacky dirt, high fives, airtime, and good food. I’m pretty satisfied with my life at this point. It seems like only yesterday that I was waist deep in my driveway shoveling snow, thinking of summer and how far away it was. Well, even though it is only May, summer arrived early to fulfill the wishes of everyone that loves pinning it at the Whistler Bike Park.

When asked to write a review on the Rocky Mountain Altitude, I thought it would be a sloppy wet mess of a trail day here in Edmonton as the trails still had some ice and lots of mud everywhere. Conditions like this can be a good thing for a review, but is can limit how hard you push a bike on climbs and descents which prevents one from seeing the true potential of a bike design. As everything came together for the test date, I was presented with an opportunity for my wife and I, along with a good riding buddy from Edmonton to meet friends from Switzerland in Moab, Utah for a week of riding. I quickly set up the bike for my weight and riding style, packed our gear and bikes into the Honda Element for the long drive to Moab.

Riders could barely contain their excitement that The Whistler Bike Park was opening so Cycling BC decided to capitalize on the occasion and offered a kick-off camp for the upcoming 2010 Season.

Inviting back some Juniors from previous seasons, and adding some of the up and coming U17 riders, Coach Dave Hord had an opportunity to introduce the riders to recently signed on coaches, Chad Hendren and Mark Bunyan. May 15-30th: trip to Peru with Rene Wildhaber and Rob J.

Last year we went for 15 days to Bolivia: sick trails and sick organization of www.gravitybolivia.com. I had Rene Wildhaber, Rob J and Joe Schwartz for two weeks in front of my lenses on the best trails I've ever seen. You can check out more shots here. The Downhill World Cup season got underway officially today at 8:30 am local time here in Maribor, Slovenia. Riders took to a muddy course that quickly dried and turned to hero dirt by timed runs at 2:45. The roots, the rocks and the corners are all back, with a few extra twists.

But what it lacks in road surfacing, it more than makes up for in awesome terrain. This winter Brandon has been over on the coast hanging out with us quite a bit. We are all pretty similar so it has been great shredding coastal loam together. Brandon has worked really hard to be where he is today; he may make tricks look effortless, but that doesn’t come without many hours per day on the bike. The Unicorn 5001 is a grass roots DH event that for the 2nd year has taken place at Harper Mountain riding area in Kamloops, BC and is put on by the good folks at the Bicycle Cafe. There were racers from Alberta and even from the North Vancouver shores, all there to compete against the locals for bragging rights. I packed up Cozy Rosie and headed out of town on Friday night for the weekend adventure.

Few things separate great riders from average ones like the ability to corner. Being able to glide into a turn, avoid overcooking it and sail out with maximum speed is a thing of beauty to watch. For a lot of riders it seems like voodoo black magic and it seems impossible for them to figure out how to go that fast in a corner without washing out or wrecking.

The good news is that cornering ability isn't magical and you can significantly improve your speed with a few pointers and some training.

Llangollen is a venue which quickly cemented its status as a prime event in 2009 thanks to a near vertical track courtesy of Steve Parr & Si Paton of the then NPS. Tight, technical and in the woods the consequences of getting it wrong weren’t good and riders relished the challenge of this unique course as they stepped their riding up to match it. Roll on nearly twelve months and there have been developments at Llangollen. Politics unfortunately prevent the use of the steep wooded track but instead of throwing in the towel, local landowner Martin Sands has got the spade out along with a number of helpful volunteers and produced another track with an altogether different character. This year the BDS will make a return visit to race the new line down the hill but first it was the turn of the Welsh Champs, brought to you by Borderline events.

In the past we had done a minor Through the Lens with photographer Justin Brantley, however almost a year has gone by and he has stepped it up a ton. When I first spoke with Justin he had basically just started photography, however Justin is proof that in a year a ton can happen. There have been rumors floating around for a while now about a carbon v-10 downhill bike, and the level of speculation has run the gamut from badly photoshopped alloy v-10s with carbon weave laid on the image to some very astute guesswork. None of the rumor-mongering or speculation was created by us, since we have been really busy spitting out other bikes and haven't had the time nor the organizational chops to pull together a subversive, anti-marketing, marketing campaign.

Mother Nature has been good to the trail crew since the last report and that of course makes for some good trail building! Last year if you wanted to ride Hellion you had no choice, but to battle Shillelagh for a few hundred feet before getting to your first floater step up. Well not any more. I just came down from the mountain and I think I counted 12 new jump features, a hand full of berms and a new drop we are calling exit 18. Yes exit 18 will be smaller than exit 19, but it fits in this section of trail nicely. For all you hungry riders with a thirst for big drops not to worry as it’s part of the Maiden Voyage makeover plan…more on that later in the season.

Squamish's newest trail is basically a 3km downhill pumptrack. A beginner/intermediate/advanced trail built by Big Red Ted Tempany and a cadre of local volunteers (particularly Steve K, Clark L, Barry M), it was funded by a grant by local and federal Canadian government bodies (more about that in this article. It can also be described as a mini A-Line in the rainforest. It's very progressive of the local authorities in Squamish to support such a trail and a testament to the hard work of the local trail organization (SORCA) and their volunteers who put in countless hours and wrote grant proposals to make this happen.

Under sunny skies and balmy temperatures, mountain bikers from as far north as Maine, as far south as Miami and from points across the midwest made the trek to Diablo Freeride Park to celebrate the official opening of the 2010 downhill season. Over 700 riders were in attendance making this past weekend the most successful opening weekend in Diablo Freeride Park history.

Nick Simcik made the trip to Ranch Style in Grand Junction, Colorado. Unfortunately he was hurt in practice, but I suppose there was a plus to that as he put together this little video for everyone to enjoy.

Last season Mike Parenteau showed us all that Unicycling is still hard as all hell, but that he and his buddy Kenny Banks were able to do it in a freeride environment. Gondola accessed bike trails reopen in May / Season Tickets available for the first time

The Off Beat downhill trail and the Nevis Red XC, which only opened for the first time during the summer of 2009, both reopen in May 2010. Riders are able to use the Nevis Range mountain gondola, the only one of its kind in the UK, to transport them and their bikes up the slopes of Aonach Mor, to the start of these trails. Day three of Sea Otter was upon us like a brick dropped from a ten story building. The dual slalom was in full effect, as were the hangovers from the Follow Me premiere after-party.

Due to commitments with my training schedule, an interview at NASA and the Sea Otter Classic all falling on the same weekend, I had to replicate myself and send my better half to the Sea Otter with Mike, Tyler and Casey, while I remained in Squamish undergoing extensive top secret training for the upcoming World Cup DH schedule. My better half went to Hood River and cheered on Casey at the jumps, sat in on sponsor meetings at Sea Otter and even met James Dean in Redding, California.

Geax have been around for a while now, but only in the past 2 years have they really gained some traction in our market place it seems. They have been working on tires that bridge the gaps in marketplaces like XC to Slopestyle with their very popular AKA.
