South East B.C. Forest Closed Today, Fines Imposed

Aug 29, 2003
by Russ Day
The southern third of B.C.'s backcountry is closed due to fire danger,
including all forestry roads and crown land. The ban will go into effect today, Aug. 29, at noon. Fines for not adhering to the ban can run up to $10,000 and/or 6 months in jail.

This closure affects the majority of riding areas in B.C. If you plan to go for a road trip over the long weekend, riders should either make it a resort destination or simply stay away. The ban will be in effect until Sept. 14 or when significant rainfall occurs.

For more on the fire situation in the region visit the Golden Star's website.

For forest fire information from around the province of British Columbia visit the Ministry of Forests website.

Special thanks to all the firefighters, provincial forestry services personel, emergency services personel and volunteers. The situation in B.C. is far more serious than us just missing a few season's end rides, so please obey the bans!
