Join Bike’s Dream Team where personality means more than race results

Dana Point, CA (April 1, 2005)— Bike Magazine wants to send a team of five complete strangers, from all walks of life, to compete together at the 24 Hours of Temecula held on April 23 and 24. The Dream Team’s entry fees, food and lodging expenses will all be completely covered by Bike Magazine. Bike will also help provide equipment (bikes, clothing, tools, lights).Bike is proud to announce another exciting twist—they’re picking each team member based on personality, not riding experience. The Dream Team will be more like MTV’s The Real World and less like a UCI World Cup. Like any great reality TV show, Bike is asking anyone interested to send resumes, photos (or video) and a short blurb explaining why they deserve a place on the Dream Team as soon as possible. A panel of experts will sort through the pile of entries and the strongest candidates will be posted on bikemag.com. Readers can then vote for their favorites from April 18 to 20.

“We’re really excited to give this opportunity to those fighting spirits that can’t pull off the various costs and entry fees,” said Dain Zaffke, Dream Team Coach and Director Sportif. “All they really need is an interesting personal story and a strong desire to compete. The Dream Team format will further reinforce Bike Magazine’s commitment to every walk of life in the mountain bike world.”

On top of being a nail-bitingly suspenseful competition, the Dream Team will demonstrate how various personalities cope with the stresses of a 24-hour relay. Best of all, readers will have a strong personal connection to each teammate; after all, they voted for them. Full bios and photos will be posted on bikemag.com, as well as a comprehensive blow-by-blow account shortly after the event. Web surfers will also be able to follow the race in real time on Granny Gear Production’s website, grannygear.com.

Anyone is welcome to apply (including complete beginner riders), but specific factors will greatly increase the chance of being picked. Bike would like to fill the following categories:

-Experience in any foreign conflict
-Current or previous experience living on the street/off the land
-Detailed-oriented full-time IT worker
-Current long-haul truck driver
-Spirited stay-at-home mother

Realistically, each category probably won’t be filled in time, but they show the broad demographic of personality Bike is looking for. The team doesn’t need champions, it needs eccentric personalities.

If you think you have what it takes to be on the Dream Team, send resumes, pictures (or video) and a short blurb explaining why to:
