New era in history of Red Resort as summer operations begin

ROSSLAND, BC – As Canada Day weekend celebrations wind up, another type of party is underway – the team at Red Resort’s Summer at Red program are finding time to deem the first weekend of operation a success. Commencing on July 1, the Silverlodge chairlift on Granite Mountain at Red Resort, started turning for the first time during summer months, welcoming mountain bikers to the first venue of it’s kind in the West Kootenays.Three trails, ranked beginner, intermediate and expert, greeted those riders that gave Red a try during the first weekend of operation. Opening to a full parking lot, and a base area that saw many curious vacationers and locals alike, the lifts began turning at 10am and continued until five in the afternoon. Despite weeks of unsettled weather leading up to the opening that had venue organizers biting their nails, the sun came out and shone down the entire weekend.

Not only was the mountain biking a draw, but Rossland Chamber of Commerce changed its Canada Day Celebration to the resort. Mark Daines, Marketing and Tourism Manager for the Rossland Chamber exclaimed, “I’ve just ridden down one of the trails, and let me be the first to congratulate the entire Red Resort team. You’ve got a product to be proud of.” On hand to lend his support to the activities was acting Rossland mayor, Greg Granstrom, who mentioned that it was pleasure to see all the visitors and locals turned out to celebrate.

Currently underway is a contest open to all those that wish to enter, to name the three new trails. Interested parties should submit their suggestions to bikepark@redresort.com. Those entries chosen will have their choice of a summer pass or the equivalent dollar amount towards a winter pass at Red. Summer at Red director Rick Doxtater commented, “We’ve got some very clever folks here in the community, and I’m hopeful that those entries submitted will be just as imaginatively named as our winter trails.”

A full schedule of mountain biking events has been created, with the first Friday Night Race League race being held on Friday, July 8th, and every third Friday afterwards. Racing commences at 5pm, as the general public finishes mountain riding, and will continue through the evening, until the last biker has ridden. The final race in the series will be run on September 30th. This league will see bikers of all ages racing down the trails in search of the fastest time. On July 30th and inaugurating a newly created course, the first ever BikerCross will also be held, with a full roster of medals and prizes given to those entrants participating. A DJ spinning tunes will be part of the party held at the close of the event.
