The Softies Jam went down this weekend in Seattle with all of the riders in the northwest scene in attendance. The rain held out for the jam and the riders took full advantage of the great weather and trails. The Gohuckyourself.com
crew organized a great jam that brought riders out from BC, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. No jam goes this smooth without a lot of preparation. Thankfully the Softies trail boss, Travis Erickson, works at the headquarters for Jack In The Box and he had the food hookup. The only problem was cooking the food, which obviously required a grill. The Softies trails are only accessible by a stream crossing, which meant that the crew was going to need to find a way to lug a huge grill across the stream and up the opposite bank. Phil Sundbaum (right) and his crew carry the grill down the bank and across the stream.
After watching it rain Saturday morning, we woke up Sunday morning anxious to see what the weather had in store for us. Thankfully it was dry and the jumps were in perfect condition for the jam. We packed up the bikes and headed down to Softies to get the jam going.
We arrived at the trails around 11am and the riders were already going strong. The turnout was absolutely amazing and everybody was throwing down. Everyone was having fun hitting all of the lines and throwing down their best stuff for the cameras. This photo only shows about half of the riders in attendance, the rest of the riders were mid-shred when this pic was taken.
Diamondback's Steve Balfus came from Idaho to the jam and made it worth the trip...from unknown to favorite rider in a lot of riders' minds by the time the jam was over. Steve assaulted Softies with a full bag of tricks like pendulums, superman seatgrabs, backflips and x-up no footed cans. Steve Balfus brought out the x-up no footed cans for the jam and rode solid for the rest of the day to earn himself the 2nd place spot.
Local riders and trail bosses Phil Sundbaum and Travis Erickson used their homecourt advantage to put on a show for everyone in attendance. Travis unloaded on his jumps and then started trying a bunch of new tricks, including a tuck no-hander flip and a tuck no-hander to suicide no-hander.Softies trail boss Travis Erickson had to remind his trails that he was, in fact, the boss. Textbook tuck no-hander.
Phil Sundbaum emptied out his entire bag of tricks (that would take way too long to list here), good enough for the first place spot. Highlights included 360-ing the two biggest jumps at the trails back-to-back, big tailwhips, and stretched out supermans beyond comprehension. Phil Sundbaum stretching out a no-foot can on his way to the top of the podium.
Amazing riding went down from all the riders in attendance and the jam went off without a hitch. Thumbs up to everyone at GHY Bikes, Gohuckyourself.com, FSA, ProTec, 661, Transition Bikes, Simple Bikes, and Serfas for supporting the jam. Look for the next GoHuckYourself event to go off in January...The Gathering, which is a park and dirt event will go down on January 27-28.Evan Holmgren and Danny Brodie made the trip down from BC to shred at Softies. Results:
