Another Stellar Psychosis

Clear skies, warm temperatures and a dry, dusty course greeted this year's Mount 7 Psychosis competitors. While the majority of the race course was super buff, a lack of precipitation in the week leading up to the race left the Dead Dog section (top 600m) absolutely treacherous. You could probably count the number of riders who cleaned it on one hand. The entire community of Golden seemed to be in attendance as competitors, volunteers, spectators and First Aid Attendants (3 first aid stations on Dead Dog alone). The home town crowd watched their very own Nathan Briggs take top spot from the launch with a time of 14:52.46. The small women's field was won by Pip Parr with a time of 22:03.68. What most impressed me was the number of times that came in under 16:30, damn that's smoking fast!

At over 10 kilometers in length, the Psychosis race course is actually a collection of many different trails, including Dead Dog, Moonshine, Skid Marks, and 5K. Pictures just don't do this course justice. Dead Dog in particular is one nasty descent for only the most daring riders and I was amazed how many riders took the plunge with no serious injuries. The large group of parasailers and hanggliders launching from the same peak thought we were absolutely nuts (we felt they were the crazy ones).

Some of Team Pinkbike set up camp at the top of Mount 7. Mmmmmmmm, there's nothing like getting up early, ripping the race course on your way to Jita's for coffee and a breakfast burrito on race day! Racers met at the finish line at 9:30am to be briefed by our stellar Cycling BC Commisaire. Shortly after we were loading up shuttles and putting our game faces on.

From the top, start intervals were 2 minutes apart to allow the dust to settle and to keep too many riders from being on the course at one time. With times averaging 19-20 minutes there could easily be 10 riders on course at any given time. There was only one major course hold when Rich Brinkmann slammed harshly into a tree at the bottom of "Wet Dream". I was immediately behind Rich coming into the section and couldn't help but hear the cheers as he cleared the drop followed immediately by Oooooh's as he hit the tree. Fortunately, I was able to continue across the drop, narrowly missing the first aid attendants running out to Rich. Brinkmann soon got up under his own steam laughing, yelling "You can't kill me! Wooo!". He nursed a bruised hand and other minor injuries while watching the rest of the field rip Wet Dream! The rest of my run went uneventfully, but the 5-6 riders on course behind me were forced to rerun from the top.

The rerun turned out to be a blessing for some, like Phil Wilson who rode down the first time chainless (not a huge handicap in Golden) but borrowed my V10 for his second go around and rode into 3rd spot in the Senior Psychos' division. Pinkbike team rider, Jeff Savoie had his fork separate on his first run, but he too was able to borrow a volunteer's Super 8 for his follow up ride! Speaking of reruns, I have never seen a group so "chill" about start times. Race organizers bent over backwards to make sure each and every rider had a fair start and they were more than willing to wait as long as it took to make that happen. Kudos! Some riders optioned out of the second run, not wanting to temp fate on Dead Dog again. After riding it myself, I can hardly blame them.

The beer gardens were a huge hit and riders of legal age were able to quaff a few cold ones while watching their compadres cross the line. Those with more energy sessioned the newly built dirt jumps or wandered about the Expo area. I know I mentioned earlier how much support Golden gave this event, and the prizes were no exception. There had to be more draw prizes than racers (over 80 attended) and most everyone who stuck around went home a winner.

Much of the video that was shot during the race was quickly edited and those who attended the post-race party at the Roadhouse were treated to some crazy footage from the race (like Briggs' 30 foot drop on Wet Dream) and some great tunes from McGnarley's Rant. We hope to host some of that footage here soon. For next year, race organisers promises the event will go off earlier in the season and he assures us it will be bigger and badder than ever! I can't wait! We'll do our best to give you lots of notice so you can book your flights early! Trust me, this is one race you don't want to miss!
