Ask Me Anything: Claudio Caluori - Watch the Recap

Apr 26, 2017
by Pinkbike Staff

With the sweet scent of World Cup Season in the air we thought now would be the time to bring you the man behind the mic, and your favourite track previews--Mr Claudio Caluori.

Have any burning questions for Claudio? Who are his season picks? Who will he be riding with this season for the course previews? What is he working on with Velosolutions? You will have the chance to ask him today from 09:00 AM PST / 6:00 PM CEST as Claudio will be joining us LIVE on the Pinkbike Facebook page to answer all of your questions.

How ‘Ask Me Anything' Works:

Starting at 09:00 AM PST/6:00 PM CEST Claudio will begin to answer your questions live on Facebook. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously. To make the process as efficient as possible, try to follow these simple guidelines:

Keep your questions relevant.

Stay focused. Try to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later.

• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words.

Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have a negative issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner.

Use propping to acknowledge good—or not so good—questions. Bump them up or down to where they belong.

  • + 8
 Question of the year. Haha
  • + 2
Obviously Rachel. Claudio really chickened out with that one =P
  • + 1
@bikekrieg: oh..... i think he answered the question
  • + 1
@charles0210: "No comment" such a cop out!
  • + 1
@bikekrieg: I think he implied he would win, which i don't think is what would happen
  • + 29
you guys know exactly that any answer in this case would get me in trouble, - including this one here :-)
  • + 8
@claudiocaluori: it's unwinnable. Kudos for you accepting that. You are an ex pro racer, a great rider, a fantastic announcer and ambassador to the sport. Last year's mess was just that a mess, and a mistake. Rachel is an amazing rider and would crush most people posting here on any course. Do your thing, stay positive and keep the hilarious commentary coming. Cheers sir!
  • + 51
would you rather fight one duck size of horse or 100 horses size of duck?
  • + 12
 cmon its very relevant
  • + 23
It is actually very relevant, just last week i saw a flock of horse ducks, luckily i was eating pineapple pizza on my 29er dh bike, so i was able to escape
  • + 4
@Husker2112: thank you mtb industry for those lifesaving innovations
  • + 3
@nikifor88: never underestimate the power of pineapple pizza
  • + 3
@Husker2112: or the pizza of pineapple power.
  • + 1
 @IrishTom: you blew my mind
  • + 34
How do you feel about 29ers in DH?
  • + 9
Claudio, how do you feel about 26ers in DH?
  • + 4
Claudio, how do you feel about 27.5ers in DS?
  • + 3
Claudio, how will you feel about the coming 28.75ers in DH?
  • + 5
 Very good ......
  • + 29
Logistically how does the WC work? Do North American teams/manufacturers have trucks, trailers, all the equipment and such just parked in Europe all year and when the WC kicks in they move it around for each race? And what happens for Mont Saint Anne? Do the Euro teams rent trucks/trailers, etc for that event and just fly riders and bikes over? They don't ship all of the trucks, trailers, tents, etc over do they? Just trying to wrap my head around how all of this works logistically and what it takes for a team to compete and how all of that STUFF gets around.
  • + 5
As a follow-up, is this what holds UCI back from expanding to more stops and locations?
  • + 29
Do you talk to yourself out riding when not filming a track preview?
  • + 7
I think he talks to himself all day long, and it's hilarious.
  • + 25
Any truth in the rumours that you are all foreskin and barely any shaft?
  • + 1
Oh man, that comment made my day! You sir, have won the whole internet right now...
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: No offense Caludio. You are the man and we all like you!, but that comment was just hilarious!... Cheers!
  • + 20
How many pumptracks have you built in the past year? Are you seeking out the locations and pitching projects or has it cought on so well that people are coming to you now ?
  • + 2
I have the same question. He's building one in my town this year, and I can't wait!
  • + 20
Scariest moment doing a track preview?
  • + 5
 Easy, Rampage.
  • + 13
How come you're so bloody silly? What can I put in my morning flakes to get sort of satisfaction out of life?

You're an inspiration to the lot of us. Please never stop being you.
  • + 15
Will there be a Gambler 29er in the future?
  • + 1
 Possibly
  • + 1
 sure... i bet 1000000$
  • + 10
Dude, when you are in Nanaimo working on Stevie's pump track are you going to ride Prevost? If so you should so think about a track preview down Stevie's favourite trail, Patchworks! I can offer shuttle services should you need it!
  • + 2
 Great idea!
  • + 3
Sounds good! What bike do I need for that?
  • + 1
 @claudiocaluori: DH Bike for sure!
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: Yea, it's almost world cup track difficulty depending on how many of the jumps you do, a good enduro bike could handle most of it though!
  • + 1
@Bomadics: count me in as well
  • + 11
When will you finally jump the canyon gap on the old rampage site?
  • + 8
No question. Just want to tell you Claudio that you're putting a smile into my face everytime you post a new video! Thank you! Smile
  • + 10
Do you feel compensation in the MTB race world is fair?
  • + 1
How so? We all love DH/MTB but lets be real. Way more people tune into road bike racing. MTB doesn't have the massive viewership/sales to compete salary wise with the road or other major sports.
  • + 13
yes, i do. we all have shitloads of fun. that's what counts.
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: Great to hear! I would love to be on my bike much more and working in the industry seems like a great way to do so. Stoked on your pumptracks man! Bring us one in Salt Lake City Smile
  • + 8
Do u think we will ever have wc season where alot of trails will be outside of Europe. It would be great to see some new trails
  • + 4
Claudio, thanks for being a rad part of our community. Keep it up. What are the basic numbers involved in a fast, well built pump track for advanced riders? (Berm radius, roller height and spacing?) Are these numbers trade secrets or something? I just bought a big piece of land and want to get started but can't find any trustworthy numbers to follow. A few years ago I built what at the time was the biggest pump track in Arizona. it was always challenging but not as fast as we'd like I think because our berms and rollers were too tightly spaced. I want this one to ride like a crankworx pump track challenge track. Anyway, Thanks for any advice, stay safe and keep up the good work!
  • + 3
How do you see trail design changing bikes or vice versa?

Are more capable bikes allowing trail designers to make more challenging tracks or are the gnarlier (or less gnarly-->bike parks) trails requiring bike manufacturers to make more capable bikes?
  • + 3
 Egg or Chicken?
  • + 6
What is it like to be managing a World Cup Downhill Team? What do you do specifically?
  • + 5
How do you keep focused and composed enough, while riding a WC track blind at full speed, to do all of your course preview commentary in English, not your first language?
  • + 2
well, let's hope I can do that tomorrow. I'm a bit nervous as its very wet up there
  • + 3
Since watching your videos, I've taken to screaming like a banshee and doing my own kind of "Claudio Commentary," while ripping. So that said, do you think people should be more vocal when riding? Yelling and screaming while sending it adds to the stoke, but I don't want to give MTB a bad name with hikers and all the other trail users.
  • + 1
 I don't think so. I definitely ride faster when i don't talk
  • + 5
well..... that wasn't meant to sound like I'm actually "fast" :-D
  • + 7
 Why you left racing?
  • + 6
How often do you get to ride?
What do those rides look like?
  • + 1
not that much. mostly going for a few laps on a new pumptrack. possibly a n hour or so on the XC bike to get away from the computer, either at home or at a world cup. But that happens only a few times per year.
  • + 5
Will there be another course preview with yourself, Steve Pete, and Rob Warner?
  • + 4
Now Peaty is retired I think all the previews should be like this. At the very least every preview should include an uncensored Warner!
  • + 2
 Let's hope so!!!
  • + 7
 Has Rachel forgiven you?
  • + 7
I hope so! Haven't seen her yet, maybe I should go over to their tent ;-)
  • + 6
@claudiocaluori: More importantly, we forgive HER.
  • + 6
Where is the Lourdes track preview?!
  • + 3
Any chance of Steve Pete joining you and Rob commentating the WC races at some point? ...maybe even a guest appearance at the final race or something like that?
  • + 10
Good idea. Will have to bring it up with Red Bull.
  • + 5
Can you do a course preview on a full rigid?
  • + 2
shall I try? It will be too slow though
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: You are already slow sooo... (just joking, don't take me too seriously)
  • + 5
Could you help finding a chain that can stand up to Gwin?
  • + 8
What? He broke another one at the Sea Otter Classic this past weekend. Jesus, you downraters are sensitive.
  • + 2
 1. What's the biggest team/rider transfer this season that you think will have a big impact on 2017 DH series?

2.Will Gwinn hold up his lead this year or do you think Danny Hart will take the lead? Can he do it?
  • + 7
 1) Syndicate
2) Gwin
  • + 1
Claudio, I got the pleasure of meeting you at Rampage last year and thanks again for taking a pic with my son and his bud.....was honestly the highlight of the whole damn trip, and that is saying something. My question to you is, I want my son to not follow in his father's cube dwelling choice of a career and, instead, do something he's truly passionate about......got any pointers on how to best accomplish this? Thank you sir.

www.pinkbike.com/photo/14658171
  • + 8
thank man! well, I'm a father as well, so I don't know how I'm going to do that. And it's probably really just up to your son, and less up to you. So, if I'm actually in the position to give advice on this topic (which I'm not sure of), I would say: Encourage him to find his own path, to make his own decisions, to live his dreams, even if it means hard work. A good friend of mine once told me: "If you get it right, it's not a fight". She is right with that, but I think, if you really want something, you are ready to at least work really hard for it.
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: Great answer Claudio.......really appreciate it and good luck to your team in the WC season!
  • + 1
What are your secrets to success for making a living in the bike industry and reinventing yourself through all your career and life changes? Also, what are your tips for staying healthy and fit on the bike as you get older?
  • + 8
DO WHAT YOU LOVE. Tell people about your ideas. Show people how much fun it is. Share the passion. Communicate, co-operate.
For staying healty: become vegetarian :-)
  • + 2
Why did you say Ratboy stopped riding world cup because his carbon footprint? I looks like hes having more fun since quiting WC.
  • + 5
Because that's what we talked about before that race. More fun doesn't necessarily mean more carbon footprint. I actually really respect that decision.
  • + 3
Do you have any plans or desire to ever get involved with the Enduro World Series?
  • + 2
 Yes, like courses previews! Smile
  • + 0
Will Syndicate's 29er loose out to teams on smaller wheels on the techy twisty dh trails?

Should Uci set a strict dh standard on wheel size, wheelbase, bike weight, rim brakes, suspension designs and etc since the 90s so that we could ride the same design forever?
  • + 1
I find the 29'er DH bike disheartening as well. That said, I feel UCI should never over regulate. They mess things up enough as is. DH should be free to try anything and everything that works. It can be a pain on our wallets, but only because many of us want the latest and greatest. Keep DH as free as possible from UCI rules
  • + 1
@bman33: Until concern is raised about a safety issue like when road bikes were getting too light to be safe, there shouldn't be any regulations on bike design in any category. As individual instances get brought up, like ebikes or some other sort of motor, the UCI can regulate as little as necessary to fix individual problems.

I just don't see what bad things would happen in unregulated downhill. There is no equivalent of the "superman position" from road racing, or those aerospoke wheels that will shatter and mess you up.
  • + 1
@ClaytonMarkin: Agree, the teams themselves, especially in DH, test their products a good bit prior to putting them into the mix on a race weekend. The reason everyone is crying (other than a new standard) is because initially 29" inch wheels were solely the realm of the lycra XC crowd. Everything most Pinkbike (not all) readers are not and detest. I am 42 and have been riding since 94. As with the wacky suspension, frame, brake, etc. designs in the mid to late 90's early 2000's settled, 29 inch DH has a bit as well. They are much more understood from a frame design perspective. Is it a sad day? For some. But DH is still a relatively young sport compared to road bikes and even BMX.
  • + 2
Ratboy mentioned that one factor that caused his retirement was track selection for WC races. Do you think that the preference for Bike Park style tracks will hurt the WC?
  • + 4
Hey Claudio will you ever go easy on Brendog? HAHA
  • + 5
NOOOOO! I'll get the whip out soon :-D
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: Awesome! I look forward to seeing Brendan on the podium this season haha

Keep up the great job Claudio and seriously much success to the Scott DH team this year!
  • + 4
Who is #1 on your list of people you'd love to do a track preview with?
  • + 2
Are you going to preview Rampage again? Do you go to any of the Crankworx events and would you preview any of those, like the Garbonzo DH in Whis?
  • + 1
What's your take on suspenion (front/rear) and new technologies and developements. Meaning, how hard is it to find a working set-up considering tirewidths, rim dimensions, Procore....
  • + 1
What's your take on the pressure for jr racers to make it in their two years of eligibility and is it likely that there will be world cup opportunities for late comers? Finn vs Gwin model. Thanks
  • + 3
How hard is it to resist from throwing warner out the commentary box when he talks over you...
  • + 6
haha, it's his job to stop me when I'm going too long on something..... he's the pro, I'm just the "expert"
  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: ???? love this answer! It's so cool of you to answer the ones you couldn't do on the live feed too! Thank you!
  • + 2
Claudio, thank you for answering these questions. It's been great. How is Whistler not on the WC calendar?
  • + 1
Lately, the biggest growth in mountain biking has been women. What do you think the downhill community can and should do to support this growth?
  • + 1
What do you like to do better, track previews or race commentating? ...If you had to pick between the two could you pick one?
  • + 2
How'd you get into building pumptracks/parks? What was your progression and interest? Does the business make money?
  • + 1
 Thanks Claudio!!
  • + 1
Biking, music, ice skating, managing a team, building tracks, being a commentator... The list goes on and on. Claudio is there anything you cannot do?
  • + 1
Oh. lots! You should listen to my guitar playing! Ouch!
  • + 3
Which track is the scariest to preview in your opinion, and why? Cheers
  • + 2
Can you come to Helsinki and build a proper pumptrack. We're desperately in need of one.
  • + 3
 We'd love to!!!
  • + 3
John Tomac joining a track preview would be amazing.
  • + 3
What do you think it will take for Brendog to win a world cup?
  • + 7
 Him going very fast
  • + 3
 Any EWS course previous?
  • + 2
How will you want to be remembered in the bike industry?
  • + 7
thanks for this one, good question! Wish I had seen it during the live show.
the answer would be too long for this here, but keeping it short: I'm hoping to be the connector to the the "outside world". Connecting the bike industry with innovation in social matters, education, environment, renewable energy, technology, music. This sounds way over my capabilities. But I believe it's not a matter of my own skills. It's a matter of working with skilled people with a similar mindset, and it's a matter of believing in it.
  • + 1
What new preperations have the riders undertaken in the off season to get more podiums for Scott this year.
  • + 1
Lots of filming, hahaha. Seen Death Grip yet?
  • + 2
Course Preview! Why haven't you done it yet!

  • + 1
What will it take to get sponsors outside of biking back into the sport on a large level.
  • + 2
Do you think enduro will kill downhill?
  • + 1
I'm not Claudio, but I really hope for a "Why not both?" approach. Mountain biking has plenty of room to grow in popularity, and I think we are on the verge of great oppurtunities. ESPN just let go 100 people, big sports channels that focus on football, baseball, and basketball are hurting, and I'm excited to see a new platform come out that will cater to other sports that have people like us who really want to watch, but cant because its not traditionally popular and covered.
  • + 2
Who ist the fastest rider up the Hill
  • + 1
How many bikes could a bike rider bike on, if a bike rider could ride bikes???? ...You asked for the heavy questions.
  • + 2
 3. A DH bike, a XC bike and a pump track bike.
  • + 2
 What's your best drunk story?
  • + 1
 Or funny story in general
  • + 1

  • + 1
@claudiocaluori: Haha makes sense! Your first track preview was awesome as always, looking forward seeing the rest Big Grin

We'll go where ever they call us
  • + 0
What do you think of Rachels recent article about her relationship with her brothers? It seems to directly reference that comment you made during one of her race runs.
  • + 2
It's all cool! She made her point, nothing to add.
  • + 2
Do you think Josh Bryceland will return to DH?
  • + 2
