Now Finished: Ask Me Anything with Chris Ball on Organising Future World Cups

Jun 14, 2022
by Ed Spratt

12:15pm PDT / 8:15pm BST: "Thanks for all questions and I appreciate I couldn't answer them all tonight. We'll keep releasing details throughout this year and look forward to 2023." - Chris Ball

Last week we had the announcement from the UCI that ESO Sports, the owners and operators of the EWS, are leading mountain biking within Warner Bros. Discovery, including the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. Warner Bros. Discovery and ESO will provide the organisation, media, production, broadcast and promotion of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from 2023 to 2030.

From next year Chris Ball and his team at ESO will lead the future of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, and have said they will be "working with riders, teams and destinations to bring the mountain bike community together at festival-style events celebrating the entire discipline." There are no concrete details on a 2023 calendar or what the format will look like under Warner Bros. Discovery but this is set to be announced in the coming months.

For now, Chris (@chris-b-mtb) is here to answer any and all questions you might have on the organisation of future World Cups. Fire away!

How ‘Ask Us Anything' Works:

Starting at 9 AM PDT/ 5 PM BST on 14 June, 2022 you can type your questions for Chris Ball into the comment box below this article and he'll have a crack at answering them from 11 AM PDT/ 7 PM BST. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a few minutes while Chris works his way through questions. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously.

To make this go as smoothly as possible, try to follow these guidelines:

• Keep your questions relevant
• Stay focused and to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later
• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words
• Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have an issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner
• Use propping to acknowledge good (or not so good) questions and bump them up or down to where they belong

Other time zones:
• 2 PM EST (New York)
• 7 PM BST (London)
• 8 PM CET (Paris)
• 8 PM SAST (Cape Town)
• 4 AM AEST (Sydney, Australia)

This feels like the first question I need to answer... We’ve started to look at presenters and experts but it’s still a bit early to confirm names for next year. I know some will be available and others will already have existing contracts elsewhere. I agree Rob is great, but I can't comment on his commitments. You'll have to ask Rob that question! However, I can guarantee we'll bring together an outstanding line-up for fans.
  • 185 2
@chris-b-mtb: Warner has reportedly said that he still has a contract with Red Bull next year. Despite that, his role as 'the voice of Mountain Biking coverage' is undisputed, and the energy he brings to the broadcasts is completely essential. A quick watch of any of the non-Red Bull MTB events (olympics, world champs in certain places, European champs, the woeful coverage of US events on Flo Sports, etc) makes it 100% clear that the draw of the event is more dependent on the people behind the microphone than any other factor.

I don't think it's very controversial for me to say that, beside the potential paywall situation, getting Rob Warner on future broadcasts is the #1 most important and realistic things you should be considering if you want to keep the momentum that Red Bull has built.
  • 153 16
@chris-b-mtb: What a cop-out. We're not asking about Rob's commitments. We're asking about yours. Are you going to offer him the job or not? It's a simple, one-word answer.
  • 15 0
@bananowy: it's not about mtb culture, it's simply about money. Another oligopoly...
  • 27 0
Can’t remember the source, might of been a podcast, but very recently I heard someone say that Rob mentioned he has not been approached by anyone for a commentating position for next year. Agree with Bananowy, his answer is so indirect. Would take his answer as a no than anything else.

I spoke to many people about this over the weekend. They don’t want an “outstanding lineup” they want Rob!! If Redbull can’t offer broadcasting anymore and Robs out of a job just offer it back to him. It’s what the fans want and No one deserves it more than him.

@MarcelQ: So even if it stayed with RedBull, when Rob inevitably hung up his mic someday, then all those people would just stop watching, because it's Rob or nothing? Grow up. Things change, that's life.
  • 13 1
Found the source, it wasn’t a podcast but a Pinker comment by the name of AinsleyTrimix in the previous PB article.

Comment Quote: “ I asked Rob, while at Fort William a few weeks ago, if he would have a job next year as we were discussing the coverage. He said he had a job with Red Bull next year and Discovery had not contacted him.”

@bananowy: Chris shouldn't be downvoted here. There is a likely chance that Discovery and Warner are in contract negotiation, but these things are sensitive and confidential so there's no way that Chris would admit to that on Pinkbike.
  • 12 2
@bananowy: Rob may very well still be under contract with Redbull. He does announcing for other events besides mountain biking. If that’s the case then it is about Robs commitments.
  • 29 19
 @pisgahgnar: Please not claudio
  • 6 1
@pisgahgnar: Maybe Claudio Beauvue, Elliot Smith (RIP), Tracy Morgan, and Reece Witherspoon at this rate....
  • 7 5
@furryguava: I agree - Claudio has been good in the past, but it's time to retire him and move on. He's not the important must-have talent that Rob is.
  • 8 0
@sino428: Rob's commitments might prevent him from accepting an offer. Whether said offer is presented in the first place has nothing to do with Rob or his commitments. Chris simply didn't answer the question.

@ryansimonovich If that's the case, a simple "I can't say anything about that at the moment" or even "I don't know" would be sufficient and much better than the constant beating around the bush and long, evasive non-answers that were the theme of this AMA.
  • 3 1
@bananowy: They aren't going to even bother making him an offer if they know his contract won't allow him to do the races. Generally media companies like this have respect for each others contracts. Just like a team isn't going to make an offer to a rider they know is currently under contract, the companies won't either. If Rob has a contract with Redbull thats where this whole thing likely ends unless Rob quits that job first.
  • 4 2
@sino428: Yeah cool. But he didn't say that, did he? That's the whole point. I don't mind if Chris openly says Rob's not joining for whatever reason. I don't mind if he doesn't know either. But just say it. Honestly, if I talked to my clients like Chris in this AMA I'd be out of work years ago.
  • 6 4
@bananowy: If you read his statement yes, thats essentially what he said. Its not hard to read between the lines here. Like I said, these companies will generally shy away from actively trying to steal away talent that is under contract. Commenting publicly that they would want Rob to commentate would be considered doing just that and I'm sure out of respect for Rob and Redbull he's not going to actively discuss it in public.
  • 6 0
@sino428: no. they'd offer Red Bull a buyout.
  • 2 4
@mm732: that’s possible, if Rob is interested. But like I said, they aren’t likely to approach Redbull about something like that unless Rob indicates interest, which he isn’t likely to do in the middle of the current season. Which is why he likely said you’d have to ask Rob about it.

If they can increase the amount of World Cup races and have more of the racers runs visible to viewers, it would be better even without Warner. Sounds like they are working on both those things, so I'm optimistic it will be good coverage.
  • 6 0
@HelterSeltzer: Im still having a hard time understanding how they will show more or each run when there are multiple riders on track. Watching the coverage now once they start showing the racing they are basically showing someone on track the entire time. I don't know how you can show more racing under the current format when the broadcast is already showing racing 100% of the time.

The only way to do it would be to increase the time interval between riders, but I'm sure that could present a bunch of other challenges. Do you start earlier and cut into practice time? Do you start later and risk running into bad weather later in the day? The longer the race runs the more chances there are for conditions to change, which could start to effect the fairness of the racing.

I'd love to see more racing, but there would I'm sure be alot to consider.
  • 3 1
 @sino428: they'll only show like 20 riders.
  • 6 0
Yeah, we all saw what an absolute shitshow an XC race is without Rob and Claudio on the mics with the Olympics. If you don't get Rob and you don't replace him with someone like Blake Samson, it's going to be a huge disappointment.
  • 1 0
Probably less on gcn/ tube highlights , 20 or more on Eurosport and every one on GCN+ subscription
@nullzwo:

@sino428: They could/ should show the qualifying live - it's part of the race weekend. Lots of motorsport series show their qualifying live, so why shouldn't DH?
  • 1 0
@Starch-Anton: they could show qualifying. That would be cool. But that has nothing to do with the current topic, which is showing more of each riders run.

Coverage won't be limited to one place, you'll be able to watch and consume mountain bike content across a range of free to view and subscription platforms. In multiple languages across linear TV and digital channels.
  • 76 2
@chris-b-mtb: so is World Cup under the free to view or the subscription platform?
  • 106 4
@chris-b-mtb: Can you not answer a simple question? I want to know if the live streams will be free, not if there will be some kind of free content which could also be a 5min video
  • 49 1
@chris-b-mtb: That's not really an answer to the original question. Will WCDH races be live and free to view?
  • 51 0
@chris-b-mtb: "mountain bike content" is a bit too vague to be an answer to that question.

Will we be able to watch live streams (and replays) of the DH and XC races without paying similar to what Redbull are doing this season?
  • 18 0
@chris-b-mtb can you describe some of the concrete steps you/WB/Discovery will be taking to “take the sport to the next level?” It sure sounds nice but feels quite abstract.
  • 19 0
@chris-b-mtb: sounds like we will be watching WC on the onlyfans platform
  • 40 2
@chris-b-mtb: "consume" haha. WTF happened to this sport when people like this run it...

Seems pretty obvious what the real answer is. No free livestreams, maybe no livestreams at all. The "EWS-ification" of World Cup coverage.
  • 22 1
@bananowy: yup, way to much MBA speak and very little information.
  • 28 1
@PhillipJ: I think by law MBA speak is not allowed to contain actual information.
  • 12 0
@bananowy: Yeah, live only on TV only depending on a region (so with a subsription) and free highlights and YT content (provided that someone pays them a fee for a right to produce it). And paid replays in vod (but no global platform, so you need to be lucky to be able to buy it). I wonder what they will do to promote it for mass viewer because they will need to do something, this ancient model of media distribution relies on mass viewers and cable tv subscriptions. Simultaneously they will block independent media like VitalMTB, PB and others. So eventually they will give a big f* to biking enthusiasts and rely on tv sports watchers instead. Now you watch football, and now you skip to dh, then snooker, then something else, half sleeping on a coach.
  • 33 0
@lkubica: Chris said elsewhere on this thread they're taking the sport to another level. Unfortunately he didn't stipulate if that was above or below the one we're currently at.
If they stop independent media it'll sound the death knell for DH. At least as long as it stays in the clutches of the UCI anyway.
  • 19 0
@chris-b-mtb: "consume mountain bike content" ahah yes: product.

Pricing for GCN+ - Purchase an annual subscription for £39.99GBP/$49.99USD/$59.99CAD or a monthly subscription for £6.99GBP/$8.99USD/$11.99CAD.

@chriskief: $60/year actually isn't that bad. Supercross is double that and the quality of the shows has been terrible. No audio commentary on some races, messed up leader board on others. I've had a subscription to Flosports in the past and it was atrocious. For some of the cyclocross they just put the audio in the native language of the country hosting.
  • 175 1
Will you allow Wyn TV (or others) to produce independent race related content?
  • 29 0
If there is no WynTV allowed, this speck of dust will disappear into the valley of tears.
  • 53 0
No answer to this is also an answer...
  • 3 0
Yes they will, if they pay them a fee and/or make it less independent (like, you can do your interviews, but there is this hot stuff and you need to be showing it in front of the camera for at lest 10 minutes, they are our sponsor, you know).
  • 6 0
There is WynTV on EWS now with zero problems and the same guys running the series so I hope nothing will change about that on the DH part...
  • 5 1
@winko: No, not the same guys. When you sign contract with Discovery and Warner Bros your are not going to be the same guy anymore. You graduate from doing money from things you love to being a manager, your viewers become customers and your sport becomes a product.

Hi Chris, thanks for doing this. As it stands, I can either tune in and watch a live broadcast (with a shockingly good quality) or I can watch a replay at my leisure (all free). Will both remain an option, and will it be buried behind a paywall?

I would just like to add that Rob Warner is a treasure and in a lot of ways the heart and soul of the current production quality. If you aren't already working on it, I would recommend doing whatever you can to retain him and his services if it's possible. Additionally, one time he pet my dog and it was amazing.

The people in charge at Discovery did not even know until two weeks ago that there are factory racing teams (17:20 at the link), how do you explain how a company led by people who have no idea about biking will be able to bring the sport to the "next level" as they claim?

Wild - just watched that and that part was pretty stunning - did you check out the full-room greenscreen? Not even shadows on the f*cking (fake) floor! Its like GM having bought Harley and just realizing they sell motos. Guessing Discovery will just stuff it full of ads and BS, try to "blow it up" (as if its not already known) and lose most of the core audience...turn it into to the typical bigfoot & ufo's nonsense they already spew.

Remind me why Redbull isn't hosting these again? Not that they don't have issues too (no privateers or JRs, etc), but this seems like losing your fave trail to a highway project or something...just seems greedy.
  • 31 0
"Incredibly excited to be here today to share an important announcement that will reenergise and revitalise the sport of mountain biking" - looks like I missed the memo and XCO and DH were dead for the last couple of years with audiences steadily declining!

Oh yes, with that production quality I'm really looking forward to the next season! Shot on green screen and with VFX done by an unpaid intern to maximise earnings without having to do the hard bit of growing the sport.

  • 25 0
@chris-b-mtb: Does this mean racing teams will have rights to use their personal go-pro footage from races as they see fit?

@chris-b-mtb: Pinkbike racing has multi-year contracts with its riders so yeah they'll be there in 2023. Can you please let them use the footage? it will only help publicize your business.

Also can you please answer one single question instead of avoiding all of them? Why even do the AMA if you don't want to answer?
  • 32 13
@chris-b-mtb: hah you know it! We want Pinkbike Racing to be a long term talent incubator, so riders have the opportunity to succeed based on their talent rather than their parents' chequebook.

People are obviously heated in here, but kidding aside I'm hopeful that this change will bring about some more flexibility. Congrats to you and the team!

My man probably shouldn't have done an AMA if he intended on not answering any questions
  • 13 3
@kookseverywhere: in his defense its an "ask me anything (AMA)" not an ill answer the questions you ask (iatqyoa). So the fact that so far I've seen 0 answers doesn't technically go against what he signed up for.

@kookseverywhere: Maybe the fans here should work up a Pinkies award for the lamest call & response takers...this guy easily has my #1 slot so far. To be fair, maybe they won't wreck it - homey not really saying much here is one thing but if the f*ck up the races, that's another...but Discovery is great at hyperbole & The Fake so I fully expect it to be ruined.
  • 24 0
@brianpark: Not too tough to get the peanut gallery to go off but the problem is - Chris is answering questions in typical BS Corp-Speak and its frustrating so...kinda why bother? Vague, dodging, so many maybes and cliches...its just not useful. That's what gets people heated. Sure they guy may not know & he's in a (uh, super) tight spot but if simple questions all get the same sugar glaze, that should draw suspicion and ire. I've come out of this whole thing thinking WC DH racing is now getting dunked in plastic and set on fire

 A quick Round-up:
@chis-b-mtb made 21 posts in this AMA, of which 19 were answers to questions.

Response topics are:
8x venue related "putting the world in world cup"
2x The calendar needs looking at to include more venues
2x politics 101 non-answers about platform and delivery models
1x Politics 301 We can't/won't talk about Rob
2x We'd like to show full race runs
2x we want to expand coverage for more riders and more categories
1x more money = more prizes
1x "we spoke to some people on the car park, maybe Santa, maybe Commencal, maybe a drunk fan, anyway, ALL the teams know details now"
And finally 1x Who on earth is Brian Park? What is PinkBike Racing?

Some answers cover multiple topics

Are there plans for an increase in the number of rounds in the DH calendar in order to make it more of a 'world' cup? NZ, Australia being the most obvious candidates for permanent rounds.
  • 88 2
Absolutely, we aim to grow the series across multiple continents as we go through the next eight years
  • 5 0
@chris-b-mtb: Yea maybe Asia as well?

What improvements or specific ideas does Discovery plan to implement for how to better cover the event, especially individual race runs? I.e., is it possible to cover more of each race run? (I understand this would make for a much longer event overall, but I would argue many of us avid watchers would be stoked on more coverage)
  • 81 1
I totally agree and as a priority we're currently looking at how we can broadcast a full race run in DH so we can watch all the action unfold.
  • 11 2
@chris-b-mtb: let me guess how this will work in a live broadcast where at the moment you need 2 riders on course at any one time fit everyone in a timely fashion. The final day of racing is cut to only the top 30 qualifiers. If this was to occur it would be a disaster for long term rider development with a lot of new riders never/seldom getting the chance to ride in the finals.
  • 64 0
Wow, reading up all the "answers" and its typical Corporate-Speak: vague answers, statements that don't really answer much and the typical brown-nosing nonsense you expect from The Boys. Kinda feel bad for the guy - getting a full cavity search here from the rabid PB crew here but...probably could've expected that.

Concluding: Warner? Dunno. Cont'd free and/or worldwide coverage? Dunno. Expanded tracks in S. America / NZ, etc? Maybe. More coverage for privateers / Jrs? Dunno. Not giving us much reason to get excited or continue reading.

If anything, more of us are just about sure now that it'll be paid content, Warner's out (massive mistake), and more of the same coverage of just the few instead of dipping into the unknowns & Jrs a bit. I'm getting prepped to be prepped for a shitty 2023 viewing season.
  • 64 5
Have you always been this good at giving vague answers or is it something you learnt through your involvement with the UCI?
  • 55 0
If you want to bring mtb to the "next level", you need to make sure to keep the live streams free.
A good example is formula 1 coverage in germany.
For many many years, it was free to watch on TV.
Last year, Sky bought the broadcasting rights and made it pay-tv.
Even though the title race was way more exciting than in previous years,
there were over 50% less viewers in germany.
Pay-Tv won't grow the sport.
  • 53 1
But think about the short term gains for the shareholders. That's how execs get bonuses.
  • 6 0
@PhillipJ: I fat fingered you a down vote, and I can only apologise. Top comment.
  • 2 1
The same happened in the UK, with a few races going to Channel 4. Once that deal was done I stopped watching. Ironically Sky aired last years decider on their 'free' channel provided you already had a subscription. I won't pay for the MTB DH WC. That's what advertisers are for.

@stormracing: I’ve always assumed they are keeping it quiet so less people are out trying to find it. I’m assuming the closing of creek side to build the new lift is to better accommodate a World Cup because that dinky gondola never could
  • 7 0
@olafthemoose: new Creekside gondola and Red Chair 6-pack are 99% a winter infrastructure upgrade. It will be good for the bike park too but that's not the point behind it.
  • 1 0
@gramboh: sounds like the efforts to finish, refine, and promote the track were stalled when the resort realized they were going to tear into it during lift upgrades. The track runs right under the lift route so I’m assuming it’s torn up, or at least a decent chunk of it is in the middle of an active construction site at the moment.
  • 44 0
Based on reading the comments above, it appears the assumption is that there will be a hybrid paywall structure where a portion of content will be pay-to-play (perhaps live coverage?) and subsequent content (recaps/highlights/results, etc.) will be free. Speaking potentially irresponsibly for the Pinkbike community, I do feel like your best bet would be to address this concern head on - if the plan is to go hybrid, explain the details now. If it hasn't been determined but it's being discussed, let us know a timeframe as to when that decision will be made, the factors that go into that decision, etc. The success of your AMA hinges on that question. Being direct tends to be more appreciated in this group rather than pleading the fifth.

Any chance of getting more coverage? Qualifying? Juniors?
  • 40 6
Juniors in DH, U23’s in XCO and qualifying sessions are a really important part of World Cup events and also the future of our sport. We really want to bring mountain biking’s future heroes to a bigger audience and we'll be working on how we can do that over the coming months.

How do you plan to balance the actual race footage with interviews course previews and other media highlights? I feel the majority of people watching would like to see more of the racers runs along with more view of the entire course and less "fluff".
  • 28 2
Thanks for the feedback, it’s great to hear that as a fan you want to see more racing. So do we! I also agree that we want to get to a point very soon where we can watch an entire race run in DH.
  • 2 0
@chris-b-mtb: just do what your phone does with the tiny YouTube window and put the interview in it while the race goes on in the larger background window
  • 38 0
@chris-b-mtb seems like you need more time before you can answer the majority of these questions or you are just avoiding them because you know people will not be pleased with your response. Overall not a great performance to get the mtb community on board.

A lot of questions here around free coverage. For the record Im happy to pay for amazing coverage. Im not willing to pay for sub-par coverage.
  • 2 1
True. I've always said I'd pay for coverage on par with what we're now getting for free from Red Bull. Wish the money'd go to the people who built it but whatever.

Hi Chris, when will the teams know what is happening next year? I've been chatting with teams at the past 3 rounds of the WC and nobody knows what is happening next year in terms of coverage and how the season will be ran! Surely you should be speaking to team managers so that they can prepare for the coming changes? I also know that sponsors are completely in the dark for the coming season too, so how do you expect teams to be able to secure funding for next year when nobody knows what is happening?

Hi @madlyrotating, We met with XCO and DH team representatives officially on Saturday morning in Leogang and are working with them to put structures in place that'll allow us to flow information to all teams as the year progresses.

@madlyrotating No way, the "structures(TM)" that the corporate overlords put in place didn't work? Say it isn't so Wink
  • 12 0
@bananowy: the representatives is the representative of xc (Bart BRETJENS), and the representative of DH (Patrice AFFLATET). So not a lie, but maybe not very well said.

How are you logistically going to provide for everything needed to host XC/DH/EWS at one location? The number of riders, team, support, and not to mention the fans. A place like Snowshoe is packed to the gills for just DH and XC, adding the number of riders that EWS demands will have people looking for hotels in DC. Does this mean all these joint events will only be able to be hosted at massive resorts? Sure Whistler is great but does Vail need more money? These plans sound like they are going to further distance the smaller venues from ever having a chance to be a part of the circuit.
  • 13 0
These were great if not key questions and what does Chris have to say? Oh, he's having a power lunch with his overlords saying

*yes lets push the envelope...
*lets powwow and make sure the juice is worth the squeeze..
*we'll think outside the box and synergize the mtb ecosystem..
*dig into our toolbag, open up the wheelhouse, ply our thought-leaders and check core competencies...
*utilize our leverage and have a conversation around that

...and all the other usless hollow corp-speak we all hate. Kinda sounds like UCI DH is gonna look like NASCAR in 2023+

Hmm interesting, when I was in Snowshoe in 2019 it was like a ghost town from Tuesday till Friday evening. The real bummer was the 1,5h drive to the next grocery store Big Grin
  • 1 0
@prevail: That's always the case midweek (the western lift doesn't even run Mon-Wed) but not w/ world cup - its an effin' madhouse, but - maybe it could still handle XC/DH/EWS (?) The prob there is there's so much nothing nearby (hence your drive) that they charge insane rates for lodging & food at the "grocery store" / restaurants on top of the mountain. Riding Snowshoe is really good but unlike real or original mountain towns, this was never originally a town before the resort. Its a silicone implants town for sure... AND its in WV (which is culturally still stuck in 1861) so - everything is a ways away.

Where did Chris get his media training? They are clearly very good at it. To answer these questions without telling anybody anything is quite a skill
  • 20 0
If I were Chris, and looking at this from purely a business standpoint I would: 1. Find a way to quickly stand up a reality show that would be a mix of 'Fast Life' & 'Drive to Survive' where you add in lots of unnecessary drama and some really great behind the scenes all to stoke the audience between seasons. Cover weekly the top idk 10 in the standings plus interesting outliers and historical stars 2. get rob & claudio not matter what it takes, if you have to buy them out of their current contracts w/ RB do so bc the cost benefit of not having them will be far too negative in Discovery's initial foray into the production. Also find someone who can be an entertaining as claudio was in the course previews 3. Make the paywall palatable, free to start and ramp up the cost over time after youve earned trust via a reliable viewer base, we're already taking it on the chin from netflix as they increase costs but we find the value proposition palatable as consumers we clearly find it net positive. I obviously would rather it be free but Discovery isnt doing this for posterity so im just being real. 4. Buy old content, have shows of past great races, find hosts who actually come from the sport, test out a ton of them, dont find random host from discovery bc that disingenuousness will turn people off 5. Find a way to involve social media outlets, ie mtb meme accounts ect, strategic partnerships w/ sites like pinkbike where you for example broadcast friday fails as a part of some MTB show programing.
  • 5 0
 All of this
  • 22 3
How do you envision access to other media outlets going? Will Discovery choke out everyone for the sake of exclusivity?. Moreover, how do you see the forthcoming paywall to the race content affecting the sports growth? Please answer with a straightforward answer. No one wants to read an answer that toes the line between an answer and non answer.

Just lived through this. Thanks for putting the link up again. Looks like extremely bleak prospects.

Chris: Might you clarify some of the empty phrases thrown around, namely:
- What is too be learned from ski race coverage. I watch both, MTB DH and skiing. To me the coverage of DH by RB was miles ahead of ski race coverage (public tv Switzerland).
- What is too be learned from car racing? I'm not even aware of any car racing coverage done by Eurosport?

"Exciting" ?!? The first 2 mins of that video was duller than an amateur YouTube history essay on medieval farming techniques. I love cycling in all its forms, even the flat days in the middle of the grand tours, but that was insulting to MTB, the races they already cover, and the poor presenter. No one looks comfortable, not Orla, not Minaar, not Moir, not Jolanda, no-one.
If this is supposed to be promotional for what WB.D are doing for the sport, then my primary exposure will be in the results of the PB fantasy leagues.
Guess I'm buggered for XC coverage then.

Pinkbike commenters can be cruel and unyielding, but thanks for at least giving it a go. Some unsolicited advice, if you can't give a straight answer, tell us that it is still being decided. Don't try to give some vague platitude, it feels patronizing and frankly disingenuous. We want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but we also care a TON about the sport.

I get the feeling this idea of a Q&A has spectacularly backfired on ESO......as they always say, one bad impression takes 20 good ones to regain credibility.

Post Q&A = in the negative and still falling......

The vague non committal answers come across very badly and in all honesty I am now genuinely concerned what the series and content will look like next year.

Currently, Redbull TV broadcasts the World Cup races to the public for free (no membership/annual fee, etc). Will Warner Bros also broadcast the World Cup Races free and clear of charge?
  • 9 0
 Of course not.
  • 16 0
How many rounds do you hope to see in the WCDH?

Will the criteria for choosing venues be changed, so it's not just the places with the most generous tourist boards which get the races (and we get a bit more variety)?
  • 18 0
In an ideal world, what would you want a World Cup season to look like? In terms of venues, coverage, racing, etc
  • 44 18
Now this is a brilliant question, ultimately the World Cup season needs to visit more venues and more fans around the world. To be able to globalise we have a lot to do first but long term, I’d love to see major events taking place in Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Asia.

  • 10 2
@chris-b-mtb: teams will love these travel expenses
  • 11 11
@JohSch: I know I will get pounded for this but it's also time for the sport to become more professional and less amateur based. WC should be for elite athletes only and then there should be a qualifying circuit based on points to enter. The FWT went this way years ago and it's better than ever now, as a matter of fact, the FWQ is also really cool to watch. It's crazy the amount of participants in a DH race where in reality only the first 30 or 40 are really competitive and the rest are just numbers. You don't see this in any other discipline but if you want the sponsors to put money and the athletes to actually make a living out of DH/Enduro racing instead of social media coverage, it needs to go that way.

You might lose that "Familial Camraderie" that the riders seem to have o see The "Riders" compensated more for Risking life and limb for peanuts, but growing the sport into something really bigwith each other. Or the good natured vibe that you see in the Pits. Not all sports have to be as cuthroat as F1 or international Figure Skating. Just my 2 cents.

Are there any plans on supporting the teams more, for example with TV money, like all major sports leagues do?
I mean, you can’t just increase the races and venues all over the world and in the end only the top 5 teams can even pay for the travel costs and logistics.
  • 15 0
As a old MotoGP fan, when they moved coverage to a less than obvious place with not much outreach, the viewing numbers in that market went down. A lot of us never bothered with it again. Hopefully we won’t beIN that situation here.

Any plans to improve the diversity of venues? In recent years it seems like the "World" Cup is really just a European Cup with maybe one or two Eastern North American races. I would love to see other riding areas showed off like Latin America, Asia, Oceania or Africa

If venues think it's worth bidding, then more venues are possible. However, they have to make money after paying the hosting fee. That means attracting lots of fans, and charging to watch.

@LAT2: no, TSN is Bell Media and ESPN.
In the US Turner Sports is mostly what the "Average America considers to be a sport", NCAA, NBA, PGA, MLB, NHL, NFL. No Streaming Service. This is why olympic sports, world championships mountain bike, le Tour is all on NBC in the US.

Why isn’t there WC in South America if the whether is a lot nicer and everything (hotels, food, etc..) are cheaper.
  • 25 0
We’ve taken the EWS to South America many times and the Petropolis XC World Cup this year was fantastic. I also have fond memories of Brazilian World Cups in past years and we really do love South America and its mountain bike fans. As we have a lot to build and get started with, it may be a few years before we can come and visit South America, but our plans firmly include bringing international mountain bike racing to all parts of the globe.
  • 5 0
@chris-b-mtb: how'd you like that coverage from Brazil?
  • 11 0
Why is it so hard ate expensive to host a WC? My very limited understanding is that the uci doesnt just pick wherever they want to go, but venues have to really want it.

More specifically, how much does it cost to host a world cup and can we get a rough price breakdown? Who's spending money to buy what from whom?
  • 8 0
I have a related question. The current model reminds me of people waiting for their future significant other to knock on their front door instead of going out and seek them, wherever they may be found. Will the future of the WC depend on receiving bits from venues or will there be a bit more active recruitment so that weget to see more diverse venues?
  • 2 0
@Andy-FFM: even Soccer works this way. Pay to host an event.
  • 2 1
@Andy-FFM: That's how F1, MotoGP, WRC, etc work - show the money, and you'll get a round of the series.
  • 2 0
@Starch-Anton: @JohSch: I get that how other sports work (supposedly). I was asking whether the DH WC could be different. Seek out places in Eastern Europe/Asia/South America etc. that could work as venues, but where people have not considered making a bit. Going by this Q and non-A and the general lack of information/decisions for a race season that is less than 12 months ahead, I have little hope for the more immediate future. But one hope to cling on to is that Chris's track record for the EWS is quite good at least in regard to having more diverse venues or non-classic venues.
  • 2 0
@Andy-FFM: Well yes, they can seek out venues that they think might work; have those venues got the cash though??
  • 2 0
@Jimmy0: About 10 years ago, the Wyndham WC cost the mountain ~$500,000. I'd have to imagine it's about double that by now. A price breakdown of the cost would be fantastic, but given this "AMA" (if you want to call it that) we won't be getting said information.
  • 2 0
@Andy-FFM: It was before he got the UCI involved.
  • 2 0
@Starch-Anton: My naive hope: if there is a cool venue, in a currently underdeveloped market, then they would of course see to it that an event happens, even if the organizers themselves cannot cough up the regular fees, as that seems in their own long term interest. Perhaps I watched to many Disney movies as a child...

I wonder if Chris was prepared for this onslaught and realised just how passionate about MTB and DH racing we as a community are. I'm thinking, maybe not. MTB, xc, Enduro and DH may well be a niche sport, but we are very I to it, very knowledgeable about locations, riders, teams and technology.
  • 9 0
This is hopefully a simple question; I'm curious what the relationships are between UCI/ESO/Warner Bros/Discovery. I'm just not sure from a sporting and business perspective who is responsible for what. I guess I was surprised to hear that ESO might have quite a bit of leverage to increase race counts and locations for example. Is this much different from the current setup with RB?
  • 4 0
Great question. It feels like the governing body has less influence than the series sponsors and broadcaster.

Any focus on improving UCI handling of concussions?
  • 9 1
Hi Chris, thanks for taking time to answer these questions.

1. One of the things EWS has done well is taking the series to new and 'out there' venues, Chile for example. WC DH has been to places like Japan in the past but more recently it's been repeats of the same/similar European venues are there plans for the series to be a bit more adventurous in terms of locations? Would be great to see a bit of adventure and different cultures in the circuit.

2. Any changes to the number of riders to qualify? The drop to 60 riders cut off a whole segment of riders who are often the local heroes we may know that can on a good day qualify top 80. In my opinion this cut off the grass roots access to the world level, which is one of the great things about this sport.

3. I think every one would appreciate a direct answer to the question of will the WCDH live stream and full replay be free to watch or part of a paid subscription. We're going to find out eventually anyway!

Cheers!
  • 8 0
how do you plan on expanding / increasing viewership without alienating the core audience of actual mtb riders and racers? some of the comments I saw on the discovery video that was posted (both here and on vital) show that some of the execs in charge have concerningly little knowledge of the sport and race formats.
  • 7 0
In DH, There are a lot of rules around qualifying numbers, protected riders, race weekend schedule of practice, and qualifying etc that are seemingly built on keeping the top pro teams happy with the current constraints of RB live stream.
What would you change and why?
  • 9 5
HI @AyJayDoubleyou - We’ve already begun creating working groups for each discipline that will include team and rider representation to allow us to make rule and regulation changes that benefit the sport, the racing, the broadcast and the events. What we’ll change is yet to be decided, but whatever it is, we won’t do it without the right feedback from the right people.
  • 9 0
 @chris-b-mtb:
who will be the 'work group ' deciding of those changes?
  • 14 0
 @chris-b-mtb: Genuinely encouraging!

I hope you consider the privateer sector and implementing a way for unsponsored or very low-sponsored athletes to stay involved. Wyn has done a tremendous job in bringing exposure (and a little $$) to that end of the sport, but it could use a more official banner!

Also, please let folks like Wyn, Cathro (and PB for that matter) use footage at/from the races in their own feeds. It will only make the sport better. Redbull is far to draconian about not allowing other coverage.
  • 1 0
@bonkmasterflex: sure not, have you seen the development in the EWS in the last years?

There's a huge gap between that stuff and calling somebody an a*shole because they like a certain wheel size.
  • 2 0
Strange that this comment by @owl-X got downvoted so much. Good it's back above the threshold again.
  • 2 0
@mi-bike: I'd bet the mods have ample burner accounts that they just use to downvote posts into invisibility.
  • 1 0
@Caligula1620: nah they just use their own, that's why most outspoken comments instantly get 1 or 2 down votes before the actual readers start to pipe up. I highly doubt PB staff is manipulating the comments via votes, like Sarah says above, they can remove them anyway.
  • 7 1
Such an arrogant toss of garbage! Discovery is going to “revitalize” Mountain Biking? Their corporate greedy mindset doesn’t even understand what the sport is, based on their own press release available on another mountain bike website!

If anyone thinks this will be a positive for our sport DM me. I’ve got some property that’s the deal of a lifetime for sale! Wink

Will venues be expanded for DH to make it more a a world event?
  • 4 0
Yes that is the plan over the coming eight years.
  • 6 0
What are the plans to ensure greater coverage of both Enduro and Downhill.
What can be done so we don't miss out on key aspects of a run for example a Laurie Greenland loop out or a Reece Wilson world champs run?
  • 5 0
XC short track - as a viewer, when it first launched it was great, manufactured obstacles that allowed technical but side by side racing, at pretty much full sprint pace.
This year the tracks seem dumbed down turning it into an off road crit race.
Is this deliberate, have I missed the point of them, any plans to make them more technical?
  • 5 0
I missed the live sesson, but the 2 most important questions were evidently asked & not defintively answered:
-will coverage still be free?
-will rob warner be kept on?

i've been watching since the freecaster days, but now, with a notable cost of living increase, seems the worst possible timing to levy any fee, onto something that used to be free.
  • 7 0
Just had a quick read of the above . . . Are pinkbike and @chris-b-mtb planning on answering some of the question posted above? None the wiser after this
  • 5 0
If full runs are not possible to broadcast then could the coverage be less start / motorway / finish and more tech sections where the race is generally won or lost. Most races show a rider come into shot in the open, up or down on time after they have been through key sections where mistakes are made. All the riders look the same on the motorways and you can’t visually see who’s going fast. This has got alot better over the years but could be improved
  • 2 0
It’s not really that simple and kind of depends on the track layout. I would assume alot is built around seeing the riders come across the finish line. If they are showing more of one riders top section then they will likely not see another rider finishing. Trying to jump around to different sections, with multiple riders on course at the same time, all while trying to make sure you catch each riders finish? Probably not easy.
  • 2 0
@njv299: or just enough people round the course to tell the commentators what has happened.

Sick of shouting at my screen while Claudio cluelessly scratches his head trying to figure out why someone is behind when they're caked in mud down one side

Discovery Channel layoffs announcement from TODAY June 14th (or 14/6 in Metric World) :

(Reuters) -Warner Bros Discovery Inc is looking to cut up to 30% or nearly 1,000 jobs in its global advertising sales team, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The company on Tuesday started offering members of its U.S. advertising sales team an opportunity to voluntarily leave the company, the source said, adding that the global advertising sales team has about 3,000 members.

The company's finance chief Gunnar Wiedenfels in April reaffirmed its goal of achieving $3 billion in cost savings after a $43 billion merger between Discovery Inc and AT&T's Warner Media.

How will you improve on what RedBull TV has done?

Side note. Rob Warner IS WCDH!
  • 5 0
 1) How happy are you with current coverage
2) What would you change to enhance the viewers POV?
3) Any talk of doing a behind the scenes show like Netflix's F1: Drive to Survive
  • 4 0
Clearly this interview is a bit of a dud, and tells us nothing useful. But..

There seems to be a widespread assumption that Red Bull TV would be willing to keep providing free to air coverage up to the current standard for the rest of time. Is this actually true? They presumably have some way of measuring ROI for the resources they put into providing the coverage, and would pull it if it didn't deliver whatever result they wanted. I don't personally know if it is sustainable or not
  • 2 1
I'm guessing, that the UCI wanted far more rounds - Red Bull TV weren't capable of doing this for whatever reason. Discovery have promised the earth.....so got the deal.
  • 1 0
I think it's Red Bull's most accessed content, so they will be upset to lose it. They spend more elsewhere for less engagement
  • 2 0
Redbull's involvement in DH racing goes way back, long before Streaming etc. I remember getting a red-bull paid for massage in around 2000... My point being I doubt they're going to go anywhere. I'd expect to see maybe in 2024 a Red Bull covered series like iXS or similar with free to air coverage and good prize money.
  • 6 0
Just more top-ends trying to get rich from our sport and driving the prices up more. I hate these models sports going now. Luckily building trails costs only time.
  • 4 0
Nobody knows more about mountain biking then Rob Warner from downhill to xc ...He is irreplaceable from his random comments to knowing every racer by there name and able to corectly say there names and i cant see racing with out him commenting.. he is also able to talk over claudio and tracey and elliot when something exciting happens wich they 3 cant do because they dont have the excitement fun level he brings
  • 5 0
Do you envisage any changes to a schedule of a World Cup weekend in order to provide more/less exposure to larger teams/privateers etc?
  • 3 0
Great to see the passion for Rob in our sport, he is a legend. I can't see Red Bull releasing him from a contract tho, they have clearly invested a lot in mtb and despite losing out to Discovery, I think they will want to continue to produce mtb content with Rob at the helm. That's my opinion.
  • 7 0
When will you return to Durango WC?
  • 10 2
We're aiming to visit more North American venues in the coming years. We'll put Durango on the wish list!
  • 6 1
Is there a plan to make the EWS a proper world series and visit more world veniues...is this logistically possible...what's your fav venue currently?
  • 6 3
The EWS has had an incredibly diverse calendar to date; we’ve hosted races in Chile, Colombia and Argentina. We’ve also taken racers to places like Derby in Tasmania that have never hosted international racing before. Our Qualifier Event series spans venues from the Arctic Circle to Lesotho in Africa, the Philippines, the Caribbean and the Middle East - it’s vast and allows racers to compete closer to home to gain Qualifier points if they want to move into the main EWS races. I love all our venues, the Tweed Valley is our home event so it's close to my heart but this year will also be our tenth year in Finale Ligure. I honestly couldn't say my favourite, there's too many to choose from.
  • 13 6
Will racing WCs in your underpants still be a disqualification offence?
  • 6 0
Looks like all the good stuff has been asked! Rob Warner and how much? So Carry on PB and keep up the great questions!
  • 4 0
World Cup live cast is currently my favorite screen viewing time by far. Please don't feel like you have to change too much to make it better. It's an evolved product already.
  • 3 0
Could you set up a cup at Brianhead, UT? It'd be a change from the usually muddy set ups most WC hosts present, tho I realize they may not pay for the WC to be held there. Still, it'd be cool to see a different type of riding being done as opposed to the rooty, tree filled landscapes they've generally seen.
  • 1 0
 This is a good point
  • 3 0
How will you manage the potentially conflicting priorities of the racing sport and broadcasting (I.e. will race organising/delivery be independent of broadcasting?).

Will there be any changes to the format of the racing?

Are there any plans for more rounds? And will those rounds be in more diverse locations than Europe and north America?
  • 6 2
New idea: Give Max Commencal to rights to broadcast. The legend clearly cares about racing and already owns half the teams on the circuit and finally has a great track record of strong results and amazing media output.
  • 6 0
How do you plan to go about broadcasting EWS?
  • 4 1
I will start kindly. So Chris, thanks for doing this at first. Now please tell us what is your idea how this gonna be, what will change, what it will cost you and us and simply, what´s plan?
  • 5 3
Pinkers are gonna hate this, but I am willing to pay an annual fee so long that there are features such as, Watch OnDemand, live telemetry or at least live segment timing for all riders, and sufficient of rider background information, right now i only know of Bruni, Daprela, Pierron and the legacy riders, gone are the days of Peat vs Hill, Gwin WC domination with no Championship, Jared graves getting a 3rd place with an Enduro bike in DH championship, Gee vs Stevie, The Rat breaking his foot and winning, Nino vs Absalon, etc... right now there is a lot of rider background and stories not being shared properly, modern social media diluted it, everyone shares everyone posts it just doesn't have the same value.

So there has to be some sort of riders backgrounds ultimate/legitimate source. I dont want to be following 30+ riders on the "gram" getting over 200 posts per week. There needs to be something concise and summarized, otherwise i just wont care about new talent. It is just impossible to follow.

he's certainly not coming back here again, that's for sure. Maybe a softball "interview" piece if PB decides to stick with the credulous hackery route (they DO want their new WC DH race series to take off, after all)

ugh.

sucks.

UCI and these bizbrains have already decided the superfans are not gonna butter their brie...they'll be able to point to the PB AMA as an example of us being impossible to please, cheapskates looking for free streams, whatever. ...time to put their efforts towards "growing the sport" (hint: that's ended well about zero times)
  • 2 0
I heard rumours years ago that there’s a bunch of sponsorship bs behind whistler bike park hosting. SRAM and other bike park sponsors who dont sponsor the UCI World Cup couldn’t be shown on the coverage. Maybe why creekside was being considered as the finish area could be whistler village banner free?
  • 2 0
I hope Warner and Claudio commentate. I guess it’s sentimental. Claudio’s course pre runs were great too.
Just have to be positive and no matter what the final 10 riders will still be exciting. (Umm how much is it gonna cost?)
  • 2 0
Is there any chance that this AMA was just too soon? It sounds like Chris answered to the extent that he could, for whatever reason. I've listened to him on some podcasts and he was very clear and direct on them. How about Pinkbike does a new AMA again in a few months or just do a straight up interview at the right time? Pinkbike has many great interviewers on staff.
  • 3 0
Hi @chris-b-mtb can you give us a measure of your confidence in the quality of video coverage of WC Downhill events from next year onward?
  • 4 0
Well so far we’ve learned… errr… nothing. Pay or hoist the flag? It’s a simple question.
  • 3 0
If there's a paid subscription source in the mix providing coverage, the "big show" will NEVER be broadcast on a free source.
  • 5 1
How much is the contract for the monopoly on streaming rights?

Where will the money go?
  • 6 0
Not to the riders, lol. Same thing in road cycling.
  • 5 0
So will WC Live coverage be free or not?
  • 5 0
Most likely somewhat possible. Maybe, but also maybe. but definitely maybe.
  • 7 6
Wow this guy must be new around here, subjecting yourself to a PB AMA about race coverage is just short of a death wish. Especially when you aren't prepared to answer the only thing 99% of the PB audience cares about which is FREE CONTENT. They don't care if it's good or original as long as its free, all a bunch of f*cking freeloaders around here lol.

If the race coverage is good, with replays I would pay. If it's just a bunch of 3rd party video that's not even created by you then I likely would not.
  • 3 0
We had it real good for quite a while now, but the UCI probably cares about the bottom line first and foremost. I'm willing topay fpr better content but how much better can it get? More rounds maybe but I'd be amazed if the coverage somehow reaches new levels of quality
  • 2 0
Road, track, and CX racing on GCN/Eurosport is behind a paywall; that is their business model. I can't see how live MTB coverage isn't.
If you want more, better coverage, and more rounds somebody has to pay for it.
  • 3 0
Yeah I think anyone with some common sense knows this is what's going to happen. Shame he couldn't just say "for now, the plan is that full race coverage will be part of GCN+". Or why not wait to do the AMA until you have a few actual answers for people?

I don't mind paying for coverage of same/better quality than current RB coverage. But it seems concerning that literally nothing anyone asked about has been thought about enough to give an answer.
  • 3 1
GCN is garbage content. Well filmed but garbage. Discovery owns GCN and Eurosport
You will have to pay for more than 5minute highlights ,that is free on you tube. Either via GCN+ or with your cable tv or streaming service

GCN is a pay to play network. So any “stories “ /“reviews “ are paid for content.
GCN has good and bad commentators. Go to Chris Horner’s butterfly effect youtube to see how bad they are. ( he mainly rants about Brian Smith) Matt Stephens ( who is great) left GCN to go to Eurosport. said he wanted to do more serious grownup work than what GCN did. Then they merged.
  • 5 0
@gcrider: totally agree about their youtube content. I have not seen their paid road/CX live race coverage but I've heard it's actually pretty decent. Like I said, I'm perfectly okay with paying to see decent race coverage, whether it's from cringey ass GCN or from Red Bull (who, to be fair, has plenty of cringey but well produced shit of their own all over RBTV).

In any case, it seems completely insane for them to have said "let's do an AMA!" without even being able to say "WC coverage will be on GCN+", or whatever. But to people in this thread who are losing their shit wondering whether we'll have to pay.... those ppl need to grow up and use some common sense. Of course we'll have to pay. The mere fact that he's saying "there will be a mix of paid/unpaid content" means that the premium coverage will be behind a paywall.
  • 1 1
 NO @bkm303:I agree with you.Smile
With this deal everyone has to pay but what you get (maybe/hopefully )will be better than what you got before

GCN is monetisation of industry via paid advertorials/ reviews/ techfeature or any content but showing bike brand xyz who have paid them.
GCN+ Will be the monetisation of super-fans. We pay them but delayed full runs maybe possible as we pay there maybe profit in it for them to do all sort of stuff that wasn’t worth it for redbull.
Eurosport mtb show ( not live) is where the real potential is for fans and riders and industry. With a expanding potential tv audience hopefully more venues will now see the benefit of the cost of paying to host a mtb world cup. More rounds. New sponsor for teams. More $$for riders.
The AMA has provided great info to DiscoGCN about what we want and don’t want. So they don’t make very very expensive mistakes in their launch.
Redbull with youtube and Pinkbike have developed some great presenters hopefully they will approach each other to strike a deal ( there is noway anyone will comment publicly if any discussion are in place) Most likely everyone bar Rob Warner will have very short redbull contracts.
  • 1 0
@gcrider: we don’t matter though. They’re off in search of new viewers.
  • 1 1
We DO matter as we are a vital revenue stream via subscription in the short term. We will be a measure of success in the short term. Look at Beta and Netflix . Paying for a lower quality product than what you had doesn’t work. People will go elsewhere with there $$ and attention. It will take time until new host venues stump up cash to hold races. attracting new viewers and more sponsor to eurosport and then back to more sponsors for the teams will take time too . @owl-X:
  • 3 0
@gcrider: I don’t think so. I think they’d gladly lose my passionate dollar to sell their product to two uninitiated suckers.

Heck you could use parts of Gypsy for a change of pace. It was just such a gnarly punishing race and I think all the racers would agree.

Edit - Dude I just realized your question was probably for Chris, not me ?? D'oh. I'll leave it here anyway
  • 2 0
@suspended-flesh: no, my question was for you! Appreciate the response back. When I asked it, I was thinking DH and was curious which track you’d choose to be the best for a WC haha. Still curious on that. As for EWS, oh yeah! All those tracks combined make for an insane enduro race!
Love that place and how rough and Rocky it is!

On both Chris's part and Pinkbike's part, this left be with a bad taste in my mouth.

I can see maybe deleting rants that aren't questions, but deleting every community reply that isn't a question is really not cool in my eyes.

I appreciate the few ideas Chris threw around about full dh race run coverage and expanding the series globally. I hope he succeeds with both of these, and I'll happily throw down money for that kind of coverage. A series like Fast Life would add to the value of the the paid coverage as well.

It seemed like this was too early to give any real answers to the questions we had, and I think he should have been more direct about that. Just say "we're working on it and haven't decided yet" rather than beating around the bush and acting like you might come back and give more detail. Appreciate him trying I guess, don't envy the guy for sure.

Interesting that most of the biggest sports in the world - Soccer, Football, Hockey, Baseball etc.... are on free to watch platforms and all parties involved seem to make a lot of $$$ plus the fans seem to love the teams, athletes and for the most part governing bodies. I wonder how they do that without putting it all behind a paywall?????

Hey Pinkers. The rob warner questions make us look stupid. He is under contract with Red Bull. Until Rob says otherwise it’s a mute point ..
  • 5 0
Contracts aren’t slavery. If Discovery wanted him badly enough they could buy out his contract. And if they made a genuine effort to get him but RB really put their foot down everyone would understand and hope it worked out down the line.

As it stands though Discovery has not given the slightest indication they understand his importance or have any desire to have him announce their events. It would be so easy to say “obviously Rob would be our first choice if he’s available but we need a second option since he’s under contract with Redbull.” The fact that they can’t say this very simple thing strongly suggests that he would not be their first choice, which the MTB community is right to react to.
  • 1 0
@Blackhat: they're less concerned with the MTB community than with "growing the sport." Rob Warner, and we, are not growing the sport. We're dead weight (or whatever biz term corresponds to that).

Red Bull TV really hasn't done that great of a job. They film the races and put them on a clunky app. WB will have better cameras and delivery. Why does everybody think red bull is this television genius? Red Bull is absolutely trash as a media company, professional sports coverage should be way higher quality. Red Bull TV is only good if you spend your life on Tic Tok or YouTube... Oh right, I forgot where I was. Nevermind.
  • 2 0
I think it isn't necessarily red bull versus a network. It's the core audience versus expanding that audience. Red Bull (flawed) but carried live race runs with a great commentary team. Very little pandering.

Versus

Network, paid subscription with added content to “consume” that caters to the wider audience. What comes to mind is the NBC olympic coverage here in the states. More drama than sports. More side stories than showing the complete competition. Commercial breaks that run on forever. Arbitrary tape delays. They are going to monetize this as much as Discovery can while limiting outside coverage for exclusivity. Or they make trade teams pay for the right to film.

My guess the fold this into the GMNBH or whatever it is network and dilute everything down do the common viewer. As in let's capture Soccer Dad.

My guess and hopefully proven wrong, the core looses interest in the broadcasts. The numbers decline or never get there for Discovery, and a few years in out of obligation they put in minimal effort and the sport will need to recover fro the fiasco that started with a UCI money grab.

As a side, Discovery won't have better cameras. Red Bull needed more cameras. The broadcast cameras are all roughly the same. But speaking from experience, hiking broadcast gear up a dh track is no small task. The team that lugs all that gear and cable up the mountain deserve quite a bit of praise. Shooting mountain biking is harder than shooting a car race or ball sport by a large magnitude.
  • 1 0
 You make great points @ischiller:
They will monetise every $ out of this. But the key to maximising $$ from superfans via GCN+ Is to not do all bad things you described. And especially no Olympic game level commentators. People wont pay for worse than we have now. And unfortunately for them redbull and pinkbike have developed the talent massively and Rob Warner is a world class commentator. ( I personally don’t like the faux questions from rob playing dumb. But see its use as a tool for discussion points
Dont turn the GCN+ into false drama dumbed down reality tv shiit. Well not the race show anyway. F1 drive to survive is apparently terrible and a turn off for superfans. Slammed by Verstappen as a false drama and has refused to participate any more. But it has grown the f1 audience massively in the USA.

With multiple drones, rider “gopros” wireless technology and nearly live broadcast may be what us superfans want?

What I want and will pay for via GCN+ or MTBGN+

Rob Warner ,Eliot Jackson, Ben Cathro and Tracey Hannah (with a bit more development)
  • 4 0
@gcrider: I think it is pretty simple.

Live broadcast - Rob Warner and crew

More cameras during the live coverage.

Sure expand coverage around the event.

Continue to allow outside coverage (trade team vids / Ben Catharo / etc) Don't lock these people behind some sort of paywall or prohibitive filming situation.

Sure, more comprehensive coverage but do not make the choice of us. Give us the live event and allow the core to bypass the side story.

And, don't pander. Speak clearly (which hasn't happened) with honesty.

I worked for the UFC and for their pay per view events they put a great amount of effort and money into the YouTube show embedded. The show follows fighters through fight week. People watch, get invested into the characters, then buy the fight because they'd like to see the story completed. I believe there were some calculations they could make off the embedded views as it related to the pay per view views. There is no reason this sort of model wouldn't work for Discover. The bar is so low in this industry that sort of forward thinking doesn't happen often.

If discovery expanded into this sort of model, yeah okay sure 50 a year for all the events. Not pleasant but at least I get more cameras for the live coverage. Discovery making choices for the core will capture some but many will just ignore it all. Who wants to see an overly enthusiastic presenter shoving dumb shit down your eyeballs. Oddly enough they bought the series because of the core audience. They will be their own undoing in my opinion without listening to the core.

Thanks for the reply. @ischiller: You and I are almost the only ones talking sense here.
@chris-b-mtb: wouldn’t have done a AMA if they didn’t care about us. With f1 helmet cam and Motogp shoulder cam. The tech is there for more tracks coverage. Even if its not the same quality vid as there main cameras. I certainly don’t mind it. But I don’t have a tv so my opinion is from a device watcher. What do you think @chris-b-mtb

@gcrider: No problem. One more point. The PB moderators know this AMA failed and @chris-b-mtb was disingenuous with his answers but will not say anything about this. They are hiding behind “the commenters let him know so we don't have to say anything” reasoning. PB doesn't want to get on Chris's bad side because he holds the sway now for future media.

What should have been written was something like we know this AMA failed and we're with the audience here and the solid points people made. Hopefully moving forward we'll delete non answers and hold people accountable to the audience that built this site and pays our salary through advertising.

That is how you win the audience and keep this site credible.

If I were Chris Ball I'd be reading these comments and truly trying to understand what I need to do to meet the audience where they are at. I doubt this will happen, there seems to be a lot of hubris behind the non answers in the AMA.

Oh baller what have you done, PB 1 Million opinions and not one clue! Fighting a losing battle. Good luck dude. Buzzing to see a change. People fail to see RB don't give a sh!t and there is zero effort there anymore.

Why does everyone have a problem with paying for things they enjoy?

When it's been free for years. Do you enjoy water?

Would be great to know a few things about paying. Will I have to pay? Can I just pay for watching DH? Just mountain bike? Do I have to buy some stupid bundle with road cycling and skiing and cliff diving too?

There's a huge range of possibilities and @chris-b-mtb has been avoiding giving any actual information so we are (reasonably, I think) assuming that they're going to go with the worst option.

@PhillipJ: Who knows? Currently you can subscribe to Eurosport Player for multi sports, or GCN+ for cycling. I can't see there being a DH only package, maybe a MTB package, but even that seems a long shot. It will likely be GCN+, as that's where road, track & CX are.

@Starch-Anton: Chris Ball probably knows. That's the problem here.
