Video: At the Office with Thomas Vanderham and Sterling Lorence

Oct 8, 2014
by Thomas Vanderham

I went on my first photo shoot with Sterling Lorence as a 15 year old kid. It was my first time shooting for a mountain bike film and Sterl had just recently received his first ever cover of BIKE Magazine. It's safe to say that a lot has changed for both of us over the last decade and a half. The combination of mountain biking and photography has taken us all over the world, documenting places like Morocco, Utah and Mexico. Our best work though, has been done right here in our backyard of British Columbia. From the dusty rolling hills of Kamloops, to the foggy rainforest of the North Shore or the alpine of the Coast Range, BC is still our favourite canvas from which to paint.

These shoots are more often than not experimental, heading into the mountains with only some inspiration and our experience. We know that we're at the mercy of the weather and we will work with what she gives us.

This fall Matt Dennison came along on one of our trips to shoot a piece for Toyota BC, taking a behind the scenes look at how we work and highlighting how we use our vehicles in the process. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks to the people that made it happen- Toyota BC, Matt Dennison and Sterling Lorence

damn, my office view sucks...bad. staring at people out the window who couldnt be picked up by an f5 tornado.
  • 33 2
Be glad you even got a window, some of us desk slaves have to look at a wall for 8 hours.
  • 24 1
^true. i laughed when vanderham talked about the hour and a half long commute by 4x4 with those views.still better than an hour and a half of wall to wall taillights with drivers on cell phones.

You guys are lucky you have a office, I'm homeless!

My view looks towards the local cardiac care center where many walk out and immediately stick a smoke in their face, talk about irony. I sit and think of the fresh air I'd love to breath while out on my bike.... all I can do is shake my head. PS, Jeeps are better, sorry Toyota.
  • 23 5
you know what they say about jeeps. They are like tampons....Every pussy has one.

I used to own a Jeep Wrangler for almost five years and I loved it. I currently own a Toyota truck and enjoy it as my daily commuter. Toyota is more reliable though.
  • 3 3
Jeeps really are the ultimate do-it-all vehicle. They may not get the best mileage, or go very fast, but I can go nearly anywhere locked front and rear. No trail necessary. Toyota's can be built up to be really nice vehicles off-road, but you are kidding yourself if you think an IFS vehicle can out do a straight axle out on some real trails. Great commercial nonetheless.

 Jeep= JUST EXCHANGE EVERY PART
Jeep-Just Empty Every Pocket
Jeep= Junk Each & Every Piece

My Wrangler has more personality than any Toyota. And the 4.0 is a workhorse, whoever says that all Toyotas are reliable is victim of their "hype". That being said, I'd love to have a Tacoma... haha only if I can keep my YJ!
  • 8 0
*ahem*. Defender. And that is all that needs to be said on the matter.
  • 3 1
I probably could take my Evo X most of the places you Jeep Beezys go! ....haha jk no truck for me I love my Evo and because i live in SLC it dosent make sense to own a truck for city life. My buddy has TX Pro and that truck is awesome!! Raptors take the win over all trucks though!
  • 4 0
@l0rdTom see here in the states, we aren't fortunate enough to have easy access to defenders, so we do our best with jeeps and trucks haha
  • 6 0
Youre all lucky. In djibouti we dont even have 24 hours in a day.

@RLoganSx I drove up shofield pass in a friend's Forrester about a month ago, and at the top there was a Dodge Stratos! haha

Compare that commercial to any car commercial made for the US market. BC is heaven.
  • 16 0
I seriously didn't realize this was a toyota commercial until they started both talking about their trucks lol. I still really liked it! Good little "day in the life" video.
  • 3 0
Compare that to most other Matt Denison videos
  • 4 0
hey wait but cam mccaul did that awesome car commercial! we can't forget that one! I think its cool that mountain biking is getting big enough for big car companies to even consider using it for an ad!
  • 23 1
That road is by far the worst in history of roads and my 4runner made it up every time ! Love this zone.
  • 5 0
It's an evil road...that ends in awesome.
  • 2 1

I've been wondering as follows. I know it is the end of bike season for some people, since I don't know what that means. I know it is after Rampage and it is probably autumn already, but there is only 1/50 of the comments under PODs, under new topics and there are commercials instead of topics. What is happening? I am asking because I have no idea. Is it just the end of season or is Pinkbike shutting down? I cannot remind myself such a misery on Pinkbike since I first discovered it six years ago. I am sure there are more items to test and present. Maybe some building projects to show and present as a completely new series. Ideas to come. I mean come on, is there any survived life here remaining after all the emotions of Rampage? There can be indoor events to show like the downhill race, which ones took place in Polish mine, donwmalls. There is new indoor bike park being built somewhere in Canada. I think someone's got to wake up among Pinkbike staff, I mean someone important and proan to life injection impact coming from my allert of this.

Here's what I like about this commercial, and these two. They seem like real people. They come across as well spoken and incredibly professional. Nobody is pounding a Monster or a Redbull. And they use an AeroPress. There's a reason that Vanderham has been a sponsored rider for so long, besides his abilities on a bike.

Nice to see Thomas back in the spot light!

The last bit with the Toyota sign ruined the great advertising. At first i thought ok, what has that got to do with the video, maybe he really likes Toyotas, but in the end they revealed that it was all part of a big Toyota commercial.

Always knew we will not be anywhere close to the top of the list of best office locations when my company decided to move to Compton CA...

someone is going to have a new truck ahah btw, awesome scenery
  • 4 3
 Aaannnnd it's a commercial...
  • 3 0
Perhaps, but it shows the right tools to use. My 4runner is about to hit 300,000 miles because of countless mountain bike trips and it just keeps going. It's the shuttle, it's the carrier to Northstar, Downieville, Auburn, Robinson Flat, etc....

Every bike video with a logo in it is practically a commercial. Get over it, bruh.
  • 3 1
One of the best 'commercials' I've seen. Speaks volumes for Toyota and the creators of this.
  • 2 1
 aaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnd...................then it was an add.

Is there a reason why Vanderham wasnt at the Rampage?
