The Atherton Project episode 7

Aug 10, 2010
by Karl Burkat
Episode 7 starts back at the Athertons' home in Wales. Dan and Gee hit the jumps on the trails behind the house. Testing out a new line, suddenly, Dan crashes. It's a neck injury, and it doesn't look good. In fact, it turns out Dan's lucky to be alive. This episode is dedicated to the fallen riders who may not have been so lucky.

Wow! He is sooo lucky to be alive after breaking his C1. He has a great attitude and focus on what is important and a supportive family. I hope he recovers quickly to his former self and is able to use this as a positive experience.

Broke my back on May 29th, will be back on the dirt and downhilling next Friday (Aug 20th). This experience gave me a perspective on life that I never expected, being able to ride like we do and LIVE life with an edge. Dan, have the faith to lean on your support (Gee & Rach, Mom & Pop), listen to your Doc's guidance and find the desire within to achieve a better level of health than before the accident. We're behind you brother. Hope we see you out here in So. Cal. during the off-season while you're doing your rehab. Don't give up, don't ever give up!!!

wow, that's scary. Most C-1 breaks usually mean that the person is paralyzed from the neck down... Very fortunate. Heal well, and speedy recovery!

Massive get well to Dan. Great to see how close the family is, the support from Gee and Rach will be priceless. Dan, lying on the ground, holding his head still could have saved his own life.

 >Rolls eyes

One massive crash after another to the tune of "extreme, sick, nice, dude!" Pro man-child meets inevitable halo date. We see children like this in the ER from time to time with their "cool" going on as they gloss over their own fragility in the face of a poorly understood close call.

Depictions like "Atherton Project" (along with legal stimulants, video cameras, and peer courage) help fuel decisions/practices that will contribute to a lifetime of pain, handicap, or worse. Perhaps this video might introduce a bit of perspective to the teens and tweens who follow blindly toward the "totally sick extreme" that is paraded by today's version of yesterday's cool. Just wait 'til tomorrow...
