Australian XCO National Championships, Bright 2016

Mar 20, 2016
by Ben Stevens
With both the National Championship jersey and Olympic qualification riding on the line this year’s XCO championship race was always going to be a spectacular one. The cycling Mecca of Bright is an ideal location to host the championships. Set at the foot of Mystic Mountain the course was a tough combination of twisty single track, pinchy climbs and some technical descents through pine forests.

A mid morning thunderstorm on Friday did its best to spoil the day

Friday’s practice day saw the heavens open and the trails were soaked creating tough times for the riders. Steep climbs became unrideable due to the slick mud. Race day looked like it could stay as a wet one, however the sun managed to make its way out just enough to dry the track to perfect racing conditions.
Dan McConnell and Bec Henderson had a flawless season in the National Series both going undefeated, leaving them as the front-runners leading into this weekends event. Both Trek riders stayed true to form taking the wins in the elite categories and defending their previous championship crowns.

Peta Mullens, riding her new Focus, did her best to challenge Bec in the Elite Womens race. However big efforts on the climbs from Bec in the first lap created too big a gap for Peta to recover even with her strong finish that kept her in front of Jenni King in third. Holly Harris had a great race to beat Em Parks and Chantel Eheim to take the Under 23 women’s title.

In the Elite men’s race, McConnell put down a fast first lap to shake off his closest competitors Cam Ivory and Kyle Ward, who then locked into an epic battle for second while still attempting to close in on Dan. In the Under 23 men’s race, Scott Bowden held off Torq riders, Tasman Nankervis and Chris Hamilton, to take his second consecutive Championship win.

Got my first race in 2 weeks. Gettin pumped!
Also love the fact that there is XCO coverage, and not just downhill/enduro. I love those just as much as the next guy, but XCO is what I race so I love seeing it!

Good luck @ask2017! Just have fun and don't hurt your bike!^^

Today I had to spend a good part of my morning on a hardtail with the drop seat fully up. I must to say, XC riders are fantastic and very technical for being able to go downhill that way keeping control and gaining speed.

Those baby rear brake rotors are adorable.

Every year XC becomes more similar to enduro and enduro to DH... Looking back in time XC and suspension (shocks) were absolutely different things and now... Maybe I am too old but bikes I see on photos are more AM/enduro like. But of course I like watching cycling in any types and watching competitions of any cycling! Thanks Ben Stevens for great shots!!!

XC or not, those red Treks are nice looking bikes! I'd love to have one of those in my garage one day for grins. Also a unicycle...

So..Peta and Bec were the only women competing?

Anyone know the brand of shoes McConnell is wearing?
  • 2 0
 Pretty sure they are Bontrager
  • 2 0
Pretty sure he's in a pair of some Limited Edition Bontrager RLXL Shoes that they made for the last Olympics at Hadleigh Farm. I was able to snag a pair of them before they sold out forever and ever...really only made a handful in each size. They are without a doubt the best shoe I've ever worn, but I slashed the left one clean open on a rock in Moab a few months ago so I'm waiting for them do another limited edition run for this year's Olympics!

Some beautiful shots making it look really atmospheric. Top article

Hmmm... 2 wins on single ring Shimano setups. Oh yea I know, it was a flattish course you slow-twitch dominant blokes in denial. Front mech is dead, she's did, as Big Yin used to say.

I'll agree the front mech is dead for those folks - they're freaks of nature - but not yet for me.

From pics I was thinking course was monster climbing but (sadly) not so:
