In preparation for the 2018 race season, the Giant Factory Off-Road Team headed to Sedona, Arizona with new suspension partner DVO for an initial testing and tuning session. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at their preparation and further insight into the team's new relationship with DVO.

New Shock? DVO reconfigured its Topaz 2 shock specifically for Team Giant Factory Off Road. The air can is custom and the IFP chamber and external compression valve are transverse to adapt to the Reign and Trance chassis. Team shocks are designated "Maestro Tuned" which suggests the DVO/Giant partnership may expand to production models in the future. - ED.

I hate my DVO suspension. It is easy to work on and feels amazing. Now I can’t complain about setup problems and having to pay to have a shop rebuild or spend a fortune for special tools.

Seriously. My local trails barely even feel like they have rocks in them anymore.

I hate my DVO suspension because I have to spend time replacing my OE shock one with.

I hate my DVO suspension because I feel like I'm gonna get drug tested at the end of every run because it does feel like I'm cheating a little.

How bout we hear some news on the new Topaz? Whats with the new reservoir? @DVOSuspension
  • 4 0
Word on the street is that it's the same as the current topaz just redesigned bladder position for the giant frame.
  • 1 1
@Idaho: Maybe, it just doesn't make sense as it would have worked the way it was. Unless the reservoir got in the way of the water bottle cage. But that could have been an easy fix with offsetting the cage up a little bit on the downtube.
  • 1 0
@lax4545: no room on small frames to move the bottle up. Barley fits as it is.
  • 1 0
@NCByron: Ok, that makes sense. I still think there has to be another reason they went horizontal with the reservoir.

This particular version of the topaz is a project we’re working on to match the design of the maestro linkage. It does share a lot of the internal design characteristics as the current topaz but optimized to get the most from maestro. Currently, it will be available this mid-year in certain metric trunnion sizes.
  • 1 0
@DVOSuspension: any plans to make it in metric 230x57.5 for the trek slash?

@brianpark: DVO doesn't use an IFP. It uses a bladder and that's part of the reason why the DVO Topaz is awesome.
  • 1 0
@DVOSuspension: why not build the Topaz in a bigger size than the 216x63mm? A 222x70mm would fit so many modern bikes - i guess a lot of people with Capras, Darksides, etc. would love opting for your air-shock! Smile I know i would for my Dominer DH. Wink

@DVOSuspension: will you make the topaz 2 in regular sizing?

Really interested in trying the DVO stuff, seems like they make amazing products! Anyone have experience with comparing them to fox?
  • 6 0
yes i recently got a diamond and have spent countless hours on fox and let me tell you..... it BLOWS it away its miles better
  • 2 0
I made the switch from Fox. Way better.

I've ridden RP23, Float X, X2 (shortly), RT3, RT, DVO Jade and Topaz. They are all so good especially when OE tuned for the bike. I only own a Jade and Topaz now (I swap them back and forth). Servicing is where they stand out (including damper), it is a breeze on the DVO. They end up paying off. And yes, they feel as great as the big boys, but smoother on the small "sensitive" chatter or loam. Pairs well with Knolly and a fine beverage of choice. Quality. Can you really tell the difference? I wish I've ridden more in the past 4 months to remember that.
  • 1 0
Compared to Fox and the Pike - I can tell you way better. The sensitivity knob makes dialing it in super easy. Best thing is the factory is super helpful. Great experience with their support!

I have DVO Diamonds(1st edition) on one bike and Fox 34's (2017 performance elite) on the other and the DVO's blow the foxes out the water every day of the week. So much better feel/control/adjustment. Better in every way, including colour.

I put an emerald on my Demo and the damping performance is out of this world and was no heavier than the Boxxer Team that came off. It feels horrible in the car park but as soon as you get on the trail it's like a magic carpet.

My ONLY criticism is that the anodising is incredibly poor and wore through on the first ride due to contact with a (pu coated) brake line. I'm currently having it powder coated.

Great seeing DVO on a factory team!!! Hope to see a couple riders take the plunge and go for the heavier emerald!
  • 3 0
Well, glad to see DVO with a factory race team but bummed to not see the inverted Emerald as the fork of choice for the DH bikes.
  • 1 0
The Emerald is amazing but it's a show piece. As a company wouldn't you want a team out racing on the workhorse product?
  • 5 1
@crimedog: No. You'd want them on the best product which clearly isn't the emerald.
  • 3 0
the emerald was their 1st product and made 5 years ago the new fork ( DVO onxy) is basicly a dual crown diamond and uses a bladder damper not an open bath its newer (and ive heard better) so thats why they use it. also its still currently not available
  • 1 0
I love my Emerald and will never sell it. The performance is unreal. But, it is heavy compared to a boxxer or 40. The new fork I'm assuming is on par weight Wise with the competition. But with all of that DVO magic going on inside.
  • 2 0
When is the onyx SC coming out, will it be worth selling my 36 rc2 to get one, and will it be available with 20mm pinch bolt axle?
@dvosuspension
  • 1 1
Yes it will be. I think it's 20x110. It's not out yet and neither is the dual crown so your gunna have to call them up and see what they say @jaame:
  • 1 0
@s-one-s: have you actually weighed it? After all the reviews complaining about weight it wasn't significantly heavier than the Boxxer Team I took off. Maybe DVO are more honest with their figures than rockshox
  • 1 0
@freeridejerk888: I think there are two lower assemblies. Dual crown gets 20*110 pinch bolts, single crown gets 15*110 QR. I wonder if they will make the SC available with the DC lowers. I think it would sell.
  • 1 0
@ermoldaker: Boxxer Team is a dc coil fork at 3kg, Emerald is a dc air fork at 3.5kg. The Emerald should be compared to a WC Boxxer which is 2.6kg..
  • 1 0
@hitarpotar: is weight more important than performance or service interval?
  • 1 0
@jaame: a regular weekend warrior would get enough performance out of a charger Boxxer/RV1/a coil 40/Dorado. He would also get long enough service intervals as well. However, weekend warriors do tend to carry their bikes on their own more often, so teah, in my view weight is pretty important. Don’t get me wrong, i’m a crazy usd-forks fan, had a Dorado Pro until 2-3 months ago, it was even coil-converted by its original owner who was a complete coil-fork maniac. And it performed beautifully on the trail while weighing 3.3kg. While on the same time a mate of mine got an Emerald which was exactly 3512g while being an air-fork... it performed great, but not that greater than the Dorado. Wink

I don't understand why some manufacturers think yet another shock eyelet diameter is a great idea.
Igus makes 1/2'' bushings, why the 15mm crap? DVO (15mm), BOS (14mm). All the boutique brands must do it diffferently for no obvious reason, it is a shame.
  • 2 1
Sedona suspension testing...really? I love Sedona but consider it more an AM/Trail destination. Clearly I must be ignorant because I can't think of any shuttleable DH/Enduro trails?
  • 1 0
All I can think of is Pyramid/Scorpion and Brewer by the airport.
  • 1 0
Best fork on the planet. No tokens, plenty of adjustment and give them a call and they will assist you with any setup...awesome company. Love, love love mine!

Looks more like Mingus Mountain downhill trails...
  • 2 0
 Are those Mingus Mountain laps?
  • 1 0
 Yup!
Funny how they say they "headed to Sedona" but all the riding shots are actually filmed on Mingus!

Where is Marcelo? He is not on Giant anymore?
  • 3 0
He's in the video, there's a few shots of his bike and shock too.
  • 4 0
at 0:54 you can see a shock with a "Gutierrez+colomibian flag" sticker, so I wouldn't worry

One minor thing: it's hard to reach rebound knob on coil shocks like jade with maestro suspension layout.

On photo n°3 : what's the point of using such big spacers ? having a shorter (lighter) coil ?
