Ben Reid - Bike Check

Aug 22, 2008
by Tyler Maine
Ben Reid is from Northern Ireland and for the past few years has become a well known racer on the WC DH circuit. His team of one "Just Reid" travels all around the world to race and follow his passion. He and his mechanic Ali don't lead the life of a rock star, but they are here to race and get the job done.

Check out Ben and his Iron Horse Sunday video interview inside:Ben Reid is a quiet guy and lets his riding do the talking. He races the WC circuit, but takes the time out to race the local DH series back home and has even competed in the infamous Red Bull Rampage a few years back. Ben may be the only rider on his team at the moment, but he and Ali (his mechanic) are out there and getting to the races.

Being a lighter racer helps with frame tuning as Ben explains that his father went to town on his frame with a drill and a plan. In the end Ben has a lighter frame, with little to no excess to it.

im from northern ireland and i have raced against this guy at redbull moonrider events and i have to tell you, he is more down to earth than alot of other pros, hell talk and tell you what lines to hit and he was racing on a 5 year old giant and was still killing everyone when he was like 16. props to him and good luck

Mr huckoverducks anyone will tell you, to be unsponsored is well nearly impossible if your gonna do what Ben has done. I don't think it's cooler, it's usualy called mummy and daddy if you manage to do what he's doing each season without sponsors (and a hell of a lot of work) at a young age. At this game like any, you need to take help were you can get it!

yes they finally did somthing with that flat piece of metal at the bottom of the shock i like it much better with the holes drilled in it
  • 3 0
yo, iron horse should look into taking something from the holes drilled into the bike
maybe they could use it to shave weight off the frame in production so dads dont have to drill them out:P

I kinda admire Ben for what rider he become, I mean from sometime a random one to a pro one only by his hard work, skills and persistence combined with quite minor help from sponsors. man, you give hope

Props to his dad That's very nice, a dad that's supportive.

Why does the interviewer say "Rum" at the end of the video?
  • 1 1
I think he mumbles "no problem"
  • 4 1
when doing a bike check they should include weight
  • 3 1
 I KNOW

Esppecially when they mention the issue of weight in the article aswell as show drilled parts for added weight savings, yet no weight of the bike complete???

I had a chance to meet / hang out with Ben whilst working in the FOX trailer. It blew me away how nice this guy is. He also really knows his stuff when it comes to the technical side of bikes, which is really nice to see.

All three of these interviews would have been SOOO much better if they would have been properly mic'ed. The Q&A is very interested, but you can hardly hear the person Brule is interviewing.

 oh stop moaning!

THanks for the feed back jack and there is one more coming that is pretty quiet too. I'll do what I can to make the next ones better as I agree with you that the voices are pretty low. All feedback is appreciated.

Yeah, I had a chance to chat with Ben awhile back, and he left a great impression with me. What a super down-to-earth guy.
  • 1 1
wow nice bike i like the way he has drilled holes 2 make it lighter tht kwl
  • 1 1
except in muddy courses you would want to fill the holes with 'moto-foam' because they could pick up mud on course. although for the short period of time it isnt very likely it will amount to as much as the metal you removed. but something to consider. especially after seeing how mud covered bikes were last year in champery.

about the holes; dont try this at home!
  • 1 4
I have never heard a word of this human being, but if he's "sponsored" by all those brands that says something to me. Guy must have skills... cool bike, looks too heavy for me though. (Not enough DH rides in my area to afford a DH bike)
