Ben Reid - Custom Painted Sunday

Sep 11, 2008
by Tyler Maine
Ben Reid headed home after attending Crankworx for a few weeks in Whistler BC. With a 2 week break on his hands before the last World Cup DH event, he decided to do something special with his trusty Ironhorse Sunday and give it a custom paint job.

Check out the process and the results inside. After we did our Bike Check with Ben he decided that the old girl was looking a little ridden and wanted to give her a face lift for the final WC DH race of the season. So with a few weeks worth of time on his hands, Ben set down to get the job done on his own. After all Troy Lee was probably busy working on Sam's frame.

Strip the old frame and mask it off:

Get out the old spray cans and heat gun and go to town on your design:

When the paint had all dried it was time to build the beauty back up and here is the result of all of Ben's hard work:

I asked Ben about his choice in the colors and paint scheme and this is what he had to say about the final product.

"17 is just my overall World Cup standings from last year so that's my number for the season. Yellow and black are the Just Reid colours and I thought it was about time that she matched in with my van set up. I'm into all things simple and retro."

So as you can see, with a little bit of time and some spray cans Ben was able to create his own custom painted Ironhorse Sunday. She's a beauty Ben! Best of luck at Schlaming this weekend!

 Awesome custom paint job!

From the number of comments asking about the procedure and details of painting, it might have been a little more effective to give a run-down of the exact procedure he used, including materials (like paint stripper, undercoat, the paint itself etc.) Did he clear coat? How long was the heat gun applied for to bake the paint?

NOT ONLY do you get props for painting yur own bike and doing a nice job for a rookie with rattle cans- but you did it to an IRON HORSE. You Rucking Fock.
  • 2 0
who cares, he's still on an iron hose (that's no misspelling)! this bike co. just f'd over all of their dealers recently by undercutting them! - you're gonna see these bikes at wally world someday. iron horse is no longer.

Troy Lee doesn't do Sam's frame this year. It's a company called AP Designs.
  • 3 0
 good job
  • 3 2
i just wonder how good the quality of the paint is, a spray can can't be a serious substitute for a powder coat, or can it?
  • 1 1
No, it'll chip and wear faster and easier than a powder coat. But if he's a sponsored rider he likely doesn't care since he'll be on a new bike next year anyhow.

craigmarshall: B&Q or argos any decent building supplies like screwfix or somthing

Sorry but I think the new Kona bikes look way better than this... obviously i'm kidding. Cool paint job. I'm more or less interested in the fork... mmm Fox 40.

Not in Canada, I think you can't get them in the states either. Apparently there was a few available at crankworx but otherwise you'll probably have to buy em from a shop overseas and ship them....
