Thanks so much to all of my sponsors that make this riding life happen and also to Paul Rayner from Interrobang motion pictures, Vertigo bikes Queenstown & assistant Veronique Sandler.
It's down to the side of the road we drive on. If driving on the left side of the road (like Brits Aussies etc) and you want to signal right, as in crossing incoming traffic. You will be using your rear brake whilst only controlling the bike with one hand, as the other hand will be out 'signalling'.Therefore meaning you are less likely to go over the bars, as opposed to grabbing a load of the front brake.
The reason I believe makes the most sense for left-rear and right-front is that most people are right handed. The setup then allows the dominant hand to do precise metering of lever movement. This has been what I've assumed for long enough.
most people are right handed and you use the stronger hand on the front brake which you use the most and need the most control with.... i think thats our reason?? hehe
Olinof is right, it comes down to the side of the road we drive on, and hand signals for crossing traffic whilst being able to use the rear brake.
It's actually part of the road rules, and all bikes in Australia which are sold with hand operated brakes must have the rear brake on the left. Not only that but all bikes must be sold with reflectors (but don't have to be fitted to MTB), the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) do random audits of bike shops to ensure compliance.
Dominant hand makes a little sense, but that dominant hand is also doing all of the shifting. If you are braking and shifting at the same time, how much grip can you have on the bars?
I'm convinced the reason Americans run the rear brake on the right (I run mine 'moto' style) is for the ease of stopping the rear wheel by mechanics while working on drivetrains. Drivetrain is on the right so it is easier to reach up and grab the brake nearest you to stop a spinning wheel rather than reaching across to the left brake, or grabbing the tire. Just my 2¢ as we say.
I know that there are many people here who also use the "Right is Rear" for shifting and braking, implying that they don't believe people could figure out how to shift and brake if functions at different ends of the bike were to be delegated to the same hand.
thats because moto us the right way, ehat idiot decided bikes should be opposite of motos anyway, again XC BMX influence ghe WRONG way, nothigntk do with what side of road you drive!
clutch left front brake right, bike brakes same, simple!
I'm sorry, what? Im going to assume you have researched that about transference of motorbike engineering dude, and if so I'd be genuinely interested in the facts behind it. But I promise you it's down to the rules of the highway, it's in our Highway Code and I can only imagine it's in foreign equivalents.
@Maverickdh00 you are of those guys that what you do is right and the rest is sh*t? xc BMX road racing(road bikes must be older than MX ones, so they probably started braking with the back brake being the rear). the only exponentiation that makes sense is that of the side of the street, because where you see most people riding like you is on the country's like uk , aus, nz etc.
You people are fucking idiots.. Only on PB will you watch a fresh edit and then look at the comment of assholes trying to ride like Kerr with their own made up, absolutely ignorant reasons why his brake is not that same as yours. Who cares, go run a mile it will make you faster than switching your brakes or buying XTR's. You guys make me look gay
In the UK we drive/ride on the left because we were never conquered by the left handed, egomaniac,Napoleon, everywhere else did this before he came along as most people are right handed and can draw a sword with that hand to face oncoming attacks. Dunno if thats got anything to do with our brake set up though.
I think mine is better: Beautiful wife that rides, two hilarious kids that ride, enough money I can ride whatever I want, great job (Surgeon), live in a beautiful place with good trails, friends, drinking wine right now. However, I can definitely say for the record Bernard Kerr is a MUCH better rider than I am...
@GOrtho - Yep, would be just like an ortho surgeon to be a cocky prick. If anything, you should be thanking good Physical Therapists for making your surgeries worth a damn. Ground yourself, you aren't a God.
Honestly, convincing people that they need surgeries that they don't, then cutting into them with a scalpel is not my idea of a good job or a good life. Sounds kinda horror movie/creepy to me.
I want the surgeon that says y'all! What school did you go to I want to head their! There? They're. Shit again, not sure. Going to need a surgeon on this one...
to suggest jealousy is to over estimate your own self worth, arrogance smells of weakness and insecurity. to be full of yourself is to make a fool of yourself.
Considering I get to travel all over the states and some places internationally for work and I can take my bike with me to ride these various location as well as pulling in a good wage.... I think Ive got longevity... But I work 70-80+ hours a week.... I'll still choose my life it's pretty badass!!!!
Is Bernard Kerr's Life Better Than Yours? Stop rubbing it in, Hope he can get some top 10 results in world cups he has the skills just needs to keep it inside the tapes Or maybe needs to go back to riding a Millyard bike?
Anyways nice riding, hope you are a humble person.
Stoked on riding now. Going to leave work early...
