Bike Check: Brad Copeland's 'Mechanic's Superbike,' a Modified eCommuter Designed for Kate Courtney's Tech Support

Kate Courtney is an extraordinary rider and her right hand man, Brad Copeland, is an extraordinary mechanic, so naturally, Brad needed an extraordinary bike to whirl him around for all of Kate's tech support needs.

Enter the Mechanic's Superbike. The custom concept steed is equipped with everything needed to support Kate Courtney with all things race tech, but with a dash more fun than most tech zone setups. To put the dream into action, Brad enlisted help from some of the best: Jason Quade of Abbey Bike Tools, who helped orchestrate every custom mounting point and of course provided the tool setup out back, Ryan Vergeront, Brad's collaborator on the idea who "helped make funny ideas real, and real ideas funny," and Tony Baumann of Made Rad by Tony, a longtime friend of Brad's who did truly make an already-rad design even radder.

This bad boy is built on the Scott Axis eRide platform with a Bosch motor. It has 140mm of fun up front thanks to a RockShox Pike Ultimate, a 150mm AXS dropper post, and an oil slick XX1 Eagle AXS drivetrain, much like its racier sister out on the course being ridden by Kate. It also sports the same one-piece Syncros Silverton SL wheels as Kate's bike, but three times as many. Wonderbike, indeed.

It holds drinks for Kate during the race and Brad after the race.
Mechanic's Superbike Details
Frame: Scott Axis eRide
Fork: 140mm RockShox Pike Ultimate
Wheels: 29" Syncros Silverton SL... 3 sets!
Tires: Maxxis Aspen 2.4"
Drivetrain: SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS, Rainbow Oil Slick
Brakes: SRAM G2 RSC, 180mm front /160mm rear centerlock rotors
Cockpit: Syncros Fraser iC
Saddle: Syncros Tofino R 1.0
Pedals: HT Components platform, Rainbow Oil Slick

Now that the normal stuff is out of the way... in Brad's words:
- Topeak Tubibooster air canisters with custom mini-compressor housed in one canister charging the opposing air tank, for rapid tire mounting or pressure adjustments.
- Abbey Tools Team Issue toolbox with custom mount for tool-free installation and removal.
- Custom Old Man Mountain racks for the spare wheelsets, modified for this project by Abbey to easily remove using Abbey Geiszler truing stand adapter for through-axle wheels. Tool free installation and removal for all four spare wheels.
- Rear rack strut that is actually half of an Abbey Harbor Dishing Gauge — burly CNC’d alloy for managing all that extra heft back there.
- Pelican Professional cooler with custom mount for holding bottles of whatever you wish on the front rack, whether for during the race for Kate or after the race for me.

bigquotesWhere to even begin?! This week we were finally able to debut the @bikeonscott Mechanic’s Superbike concept— The idea was simple: build an eBike-based machine equipped with every necessity to fully support @kateplusfate in the tech zone of a pro mountain bike race — and have fun doing it.Brad Copeland

The fact that even the Topeak canisters are included in the Made Rad color scheme is downright incredible. And the canister system, which consists of two canisters and a custom mini air compressor that pressurizes one of the canisters for quick tire changes, is quite clever.

The Mechanic's Superbike doesn't slack on the shiny bits, and with the Syncros integrated cockpit, Syncros wheels, XX1 rainbow oil slick cassette, and AXS dropper, this bike means business. How exactly are we going to define 'business'? We'll let you answer that.

photo
The devil's in the details. Serial number: 00420.

photo
The concept execution was clearly not a walk in the park, and Brad wants to shout out Jason Quade from Abbey Bike Tools, who essentially shut down his whole shop for a few days to make this thing happen. He used "all of his resources and know-how to fabricate each and every attachment, reinforcement, mounting point, and modification to make this bike functional and simple to use," Brad wrote. He also, of course, supplied the tool box itself.

photo
photo
Oil slick on oil slick. Tony Baumann, the man behind Made Rad by Tony, perfectly customized the whole bike. Brad met Tony at his first mountain bike race when they were both 11 years old, and they've now been friends for nearly 25 years, so the fact that they finally teamed up to create something awesome has a lot of sentimental value, Brad said.

The team's sponsors also made the Mechanic's Superbike possible. From Brad: "All of the Scott-SRAM MTB Racing team sponsors, whose endless support not only make our day-to-day operations possible, went even further to supply all the parts and hardware to complete this incredible package— in beautiful and color-coordinated fashion, no less. Thank you SRAM, RockShox, Syncros, Topeak, Maxxis, HT Components, Better Bolts, Old Man Mountain Racks and Pelican Professional for going the extra mile to be a part of this one. Keeping it sponsor-correct was an important goal for the project as well, as we wanted to pay homage to our supporters with this project and honor their endless contributions to our team’s success."

On this beast, Brad's ready to take on the world. Is the world ready for Brad? Doubtful, but maybe we can rise to the occasion.

I've been lucky enough to meet Brad, and I can assure you he needs no charisma substitute. In fact, shortly after this photo was taken, the fox was reanimated by osmotic absorption of Brad's awesomeness and jumped right off his head. It was subsequently killed by a Snowshoe local and made into stew.
  • 75 49
@TyPierce: nope, nothing awesome about conspicuous animal cruelty in a lame attempt at fabricating individuality
  • 67 46
@mattg95: Can't upvote this enough. I guess the bike is kinda neat or whatever, but having a dead animal sitting on top of your head as a fun wacky gag just gives off the biggest douchebag vibes there are. Truly the cringiest shit I've seen on ages on Pinkbike, F the guy.
  • 6 1
@mattg95: I was at Snowshoe in 2019 for the world cup and saw an older woman wearing this on one of the first days. I think this may have been gifted to him...I'd recognize that fox anywhere.
  • 43 41
@mattg95: you’ve got to be kidding right? The killing and skinning of fur bearing animals has happened since about the dawn of time. How do you think our ancestors survived winters? But ya shit on him for wearing a hat.
  • 26 2
Well we have heat now and wool beanies now sooo@sunringlerider:
  • 42 6
In this discussion it probably depends on how recognizable the dead animal is at this point, isn't it? I've seen a good few articles where a ride trip ended with a barbeque. These hamburgers sure do last a good bit shorter than this hat. I've also seen articles of people wearing down-filled jackets, down-filled sleeping bags and whatnot. So, where do us keyboard warriors draw the line for others?
  • 2 0
@rubberondirt: is this a cougar joke? My charisma coat is a mantle of live 'roaches
  • 67 9
realistically, he bought the hat in some random backwoods antique shop while traveling for races, he did not kill the creature to make himself a hat. Fox was probably roadkill or killed as a pest for eating too many chickens. It always surprises me how naive and self-righteous mountain bikers are about the natural world for a group of people who spend so much time in the outdoors. Y'all need to spend less time at the hip breweries and more time understanding the ecosystems our trails wind through. "Conspicuous animal cruelty" good god....

That being said, I'm not a fan of homie's style. I'd have a little more respect if he actually made the hat, but going PETA keyboard warrior makes someone just as much of a tool as this dude looks
  • 16 14
@sunringlerider: The point is that we are LOOOOOOOOOOONG past that point in our evolution. Making the trapping & skinning of fur bearing animals unnecessary for the vast majority of the human population.

But whatever makes you feel like more of a "man" I guess?
  • 3 0

Animal exploitation and abuse is wrong, full stop.
  • 5 5
@kovaldesign: you must not spend much time in the wood/back country. I still frequently wipe my ass with leaves. . . just need to make sure its the proper leaf.

I'm going to take a wild shot and guess you are a vegan?
  • 1 3
@sunringlerider: yes I'm am, but it is irrelevant. Essentially we all recognise animal abuse and are against it, and so we should change our way of living to exclude it. Animals do not own us anything, it is simple as that.

@hamncheez: you should know by know democrats only care about those kind of issues when it is beneficial to their cause. you see how little any of the left cared about the violent racist attacks on Larry Elder or their utter dismissal of Rose McGowans accusations against Newsome and his wife?
They don't give a shit dude.
  • 22 2
@TotalAmateur: So it blew my mind when my Evangelical Christian family members all lined up to support Trump. They posted boomer memes about Jesus standing behind Trump, with his hand on his shoulder. Pics of Trump looking down and the "Trump prays for this country" caption. This for a guy who bangs pornstars and sells his brand out to pyramid schemes.

Then Biden took the nomination, and now Democrats have forgotten that more so than any other single individual, Biden is responsible for the mass incarceration of Black Americans from his 1994 crime bill, the most racist bill in my lifetime. That Biden in the 80s consistently worked with actual segregationists in Congress. That Biden literally gave the eulogy for Robert Byrd's funeral. Then, after a summer of defund the police, Black Lives Matter, etc, the Democrats ignored that Biden chose a freaking cop as his running mate. Not just any cop, but one that profited off of and expanded the prison industrial complex. Absolutely mind blowing.
  • 7 6
@hamncheez: saying. they don't care. you're not even touching on all the innocent people Kamala locked up to pad her prosecution rate. nobody stands behind their values/virtues anymore, they just do what they want to satisfy their egos and try to shape their virtues around their actions. you can spot one of these morally bankrupt people by the simple fact that they can't ever defend the politicians they nominate, they just attack others and delude themselves into being morally superior.
disgusting.

She is a morally bankrupt opportunist who is responsible for unlawfully extending the sentences of thousands of men so they could be used as free corporate labor. She denied $12 DNA kits to men on death row who, once her refusal was overturned, were exonerated. No body likes her or voted for her. Baffling.

I had a quick encounter with him in Snowshoe. It was Wednesday, away from the track in a low pressure setting where it was easy to be yourself, and arrogance just oozed out of him. I met over a dozen riders (the people that fans like me pay their hard earned $ to see - sorry Brad) and all of them were super chill and in far less carefree moments.

Deep dive on that air compressor setup, please.
  • 45 2
@kfcoleslaw Its a rechargeable mini air compressor from Oasser. We used a die grinder to open the bottom of the Topeak Tubibooster on the drive side so it would fit cleanly inside. We modified the head of the booster so we could run a hose to the other tank. The other tank (non-drive) is acts as the air storage tank. We added a longer hose to it from a Topeak floor pump so it doesn’t need to be removed from the bike to air up the rear tires or a bikes next to it. It was a lot of head scratching and problem solving but it works exactly like we planned.

  • 9 3
 @TheBigBaboiiski: you would be correct!
  • 4 0
When he's already carrying 4 tires, what's the point of the compressor? How many flats can she get in 1 ride? And if more than 4 I think she needs to look into that...
  • 1 0
@Verg: Absolutely love it, thanks for the info. So that first tank basically just acts as a shell to house the compressor then, right? It doesn't hold any air itself?
  • 3 1
@kfccoleslaw: Correct, the tank ended up being the best place we could find to mount/ house the compressor. The original plan was to find one that we could disassemble or modify and hide in the downtube but after much searching and brainstorming we realized there wasn’t enough room.

When I saw Brad with the fox hat... it reminded me that Frischi (Scott/SRAM team director) is sometimes seen in a racoon pelt cap (though I'm pretty sure his is imitation fur). I'm kind of surprised that it would appear no one around him or on the team spoke up and suggested this particular fox cap probably wouldn't go over well for obvious reasons.

It would probably be quite a messy deal for him to step in at this point and attempt address this issue without coming off looking sorta bad. So my guess is... we probably won't see him in a cap like this in the future Wink

Sure beats a handtruck and a backpack... Can it hold nitrous?
  • 3 2
@scotterbrains Yes it does. It could definitely hold nitrous. It has a compressor in one tank to charge the other one but the tanks are standard 1.5 lb Co2 tanks so you could fill them with your gas of your choice.

I want a video of him doing a manual and afterwards going into a berm reaally low...
  • 2 1
Fail. It is missing a bike stand. How do you work on a bike without a bike stand?
  • 5 0
It is a pro mechanic. He works on a pro bike. If he's working on the bike, the pro (Kate) can't ride it anyway so she could just as well hold it for him. It's us home-wrenching amateurs who need bike stands.
  • 2 2
@SJP We thought about that. The idea was to build Tech Zone (service area during the race) bike that has the necessary parts and equipment to support Kate during the race. Since you don’t take the time to put a bike in a stand to repair mid-race we made the choice not to include a work stand.
