After missing out on racing the World Cups in Poland, Connor Fearon was able to make it to Cairns and take the gold medal position in the downhill by over three seconds with his Forbidden Supernought. Check out more details on Connor's race-winning bike below.

For the race Connor opted for a 425lb spring which is more than needed for his weight, but he likes the bike to run higher in its travel so he can pump out of corners quickly.

While Connor finds a size large frame perfect for World Cup racing he prefers the smaller medium size for his home tracks in Australia.

One aspect of his bike that Connor notices the most is the reach. To make him feel comfortable on the medium size, he is running a Chris King adjust headset set at 8mm.

Instead of a dedicated mud tire, Connor ran DHR IIs front and rear as he found they cleared mud better and provided better grip across the many roots and rocks on the Cairns course.

Connor has kept his usual 220/200mm brake rotor combo despite the move to the more powerful SRAM Maven brakes.

 Pretty pictures and some great details, but here's a general gripe about many "Pro Bike Checks." If a bike offers adjustable geometry (chainstay length, BB height, shock flip chips, etc), a pro bike check should always highlight which settings the athlete chose. The Supernought has modular rear dropouts for 20mm of chainstay adjustment... so what's Connor running here? Looks like -10mm to me but that's a guess. Would have been nice if the journalist asked him, especially because there are so many interesting choices that the journalist already took notes on, like reach adjust headsets, rotor size, frame swaps for different courses, etc.

 wonder how many people would be able to understand how those small detailed adjustments helped on his run, isn't that like a more personal thing??

 @Narro2: It's absolutely a personal preference thing, just like everything else in a pro bike check article. I think that's the point of the article.

 @succulentsausage: Agreed on that. Enduro and trail bikes went through a fork offset rethink and I thought that DH bikes had some of that but all the mainstream forks continue to be 51mm. I think I saw on Vali's bike that she had Renthal clamps but I didn't see anything on their site about it.

Also just another vote for as much detailed information as possible in bike checks.

 @heatproofgenie: yeah it’d be super interesting. I think some frames can’t run low offset crowns because the wheel would contact the frame at full travel, but then it’s interesting that bikes like the new Tues can run low offset but they still spec them with 51mm

Well done @edspratt, great pics, love the muddy dog after the race. Big fan of the Forbidden bikes, I think they look great.
Its a shame that so many "gripe" about pointless issues when presesnted with virtually free entertainment on their Friday morning, and then the piling on that comes after.
Maybe they had a few minutes to chat about bike setup while Connor was running to other things

Maybe Ed doesnt know that this, in a myriad of thousands of available bikes has adjustable CS
Maybe they didnt want to tell you, maybe they run custom +7mm CS
What exactly are you going to do with that CS info anyway, other than store it away in your head?

 Hugely popular Now to run dual DHR. Its a little draggy but better than assegai up front. They are a sick front tyre, They deal with mixed conditions way better than assegai and dont have as much of the Classic maxxis ' on the edge' feeling - which i think its why the new shorty will be an excellent match with a dhr, dhr being on the rear and shorty v2 on front. the new maxxis is killer, which will be out soon.. which is the new shorty, similar to tacky chan, argotal etc. We run argotal on most of the bikes now, it performs brilliant, except for high speed flat berms but great for from wet to dust bowls.

 I switched from running a DHF in the front to running DHR2's front and back because I read that was Connor's tyre choice, and I've never looked back. Love that setup. Rolls faster than the DHF with more consistent grip and I haven't had any more 'why am I eating dirt from a front wheel wash out' moments. The DHR2 let's go predicably while the DHF was all good ... And then there's nothing.

 @Peteridesbikes: pretty sure its what Dunne runs, either vegier or iles too, can't remember which. The braking grip with the DHR2 on the front is super confidence inspiring in steeps

 @Peteridesbikes: That "tons of grip - tons of grip - tons of grip - massive wash out" dynamic is exactly why I changed from DHF's f&r to Schwalbe Magic Marys f&r years ago. Slightly less overall grip, but so incredibly predictable. They give you so much warning that they are going to slide, before gently and progressively breaking loose. probably the most polite tyre ive ever ridden, lol. "excuse me, I'm going to slide soon if thats ok with you? Ready? 3..2..1.. little slide. Ready for a bit more? ok. 3..2...1..."

Running Assegai F DHR R now. Pretty happy with them too. kinda half way between the dhf and the schwalbe.

 @gabiusmaximus: I cant seem to get along with Magic mary's or the assegai, I find they just snap and let go for me where i ride(looser, loamy, dusty etc)
Been running the kryptotal or argotal depending on the conditions and location, The Ebike I especially hated the Mary - currently have a super soft argotal on it and it just sticks like shit to a blanket.

 It's all personal preference, of course. To me they look rolled back to the point where the backsweep is below the horizontal, but I may be misinterpreting what I'm seeing. I never liked the Blacklabels anyway.

 They look correct and comfortable to me.

Though usually labeled as a personal preference, the idea that bars must be rolled forward/up, towards your shoulders, or even somewhere halfway between level and 45°, is a fallacy that comes from somewhere that's the opposite of ergonomic. It's just become an automatic yes that most riders blindly follow.

I'll prove it. Try this experiment:

Close your eyes, then pretend you're holding on to a pair of (air) handlebars, in what you think is a normal "attack position". Don't try to make any compensation for hand or wrist position. Just a relaxed, natural grip.

Now open your eyes and look at the holes that your closed hands have formed, where the grips would normally be.

What direction do those holes point?

No matter how "attack" your position is, they likely STILL point down and back. Just like Connor's bars, but more so. Not up.

If anyone ever wonders why the outside of the palm of your hands get so beaten up during a long, rough day on the trail, this is at least part of it.

Having the bars rolled (un-naturally) up will put a lot more pressure and beating into the outsides of your palms.

 Cairns is muddy, slippery rocks and some fast zones… I guess he is prioritising grip for the slip over straight line speed.
