Bike Check: Hannah Bergemann's Transition Sentinel

Sep 4, 2020
by Mike Kazimer

Hannah Bergemann is a freerider on the rise, with a part in TGR's Accomplice movie and a brand new Red Bull sponsorship. Based in Bellingham, Washington, Hannah's a multi-faceted mountain biker, with the ability to win a multi-day enduro race one week, and then throw down on big lines in the desert for Red Bull Formation the next.

Hannah rides (and works) for Transition Bikes, and it's her 150mm Sentinel that sees the most use. The 150mm 29er is typically spec'd with a 160mm fork, but she's beefed it up a little with the addition of a 170mm RockShox Zeb Ultimate fork.

It's still designed for pedaling, though, with a SRAM AXS 12-speed drivetrain and a 10-52 tooth cassette - accessing many of the Pacific Northwest testpieces often requires a long grind up a steep logging road. A spare tube is attached to the underside of the top tube with WolfTooth's BRad system, and a Specialized Zee Cage II keeps a multi-tool close at hand.

The Transition is a superior Trek compared to the the new Trek

The new Trek is an inferior Giant.

Dunno, i heard transition bikes rear ends are not that good for repeated highspeed hits
  • 23 0
@Stokedonthis: The new bikes are more progressive, so they should do better. I have heard nothing but good things about the new Transition models.
  • 17 14
@Stokedonthis: If you drink locally brewed IPA's i think you will LOVE the transition, if you are a cheap beer from the gas station guy like me, then you probably will not enjoy it

@Motoracer31: "If you like good products, go with Transition." Got it.
  • 24 0
@Motoracer31: I exclusively drink natty daddies and I loved my transition

@Motoracer31: There's nothing better than a cold IPA after a good rip on the Sentinel.

@gilby82: this is a patently untrue statement. Busch light wins the day.

@Motoracer31: Corona guy here, love my V1
  • 13 0
@Motoracer31: Transition made a version of the Bottlerocket covered in Pabst Blue Ribbon stickers ....I think we know where they stand.
  • 29 1
@mrosie: fetishizing the PBR label is the most IPA thing you can do.
  • 4 0
 @kingsRunEast: Exactly!

Naturally ironic, and matches all things flannel.
  • 15 2
@mrosie: Yes Transition used to be a working mans brand, but they are evolving into a mini SC. Seems like they are phasing out alloy frames and focusing on really improving their carbon offerings. i.e. Drank PBR as a freshman, but sipped IPA while composing their thesis.

@gilby82: if I want a floral bouquet I'll visit my mother. the darker the better - preferably a beer that requires a knife & fork to consume Smile

@speed10: which is kind of a shame. My 2015 patrol alloy did so many things right: threaded bb, bog-standard interfaces, pretty much everything serviceable - shimano builds! I hope they keep some of that, a bookcase made out of a 2x8 and some cinder blocks looks good in your dorm room *and* your downtown executive condo
  • 12 1
@speed10: I don't think that is entirely true though. Transition still offers way better build kits for the same price point as SC.

For example, the Gx build for the Scout and Sentinel comes with Code RSC brakes and RS Ultimate Fork and Rear Shock. The Hightower build comes with Code R brakes and Fox performance suspension. So Transition is offering top shelf stuff for the same price.

I get the gripe with no aluminum models. Hopefully they bring those in soon.

Transition is also owned by two riders. SC sold to a massive conglomerate. I'd rather use my money to support small business owners.
  • 4 1
@plyawn: Transition has XT builds for the Scout and Sentinel now.
  • 2 0
 @nskerb: No.

Save humanity, buy some PBR light or even Costco Kirkland light.
  • 4 0
@HB208: Well I thought I said they were evolving that direction, not that they were a full fledged mini SC as you seem to be addressing. I must've misspoke, sorry for that. Clarification: For all their new bikes, I see the cost to entry is now a minimum of $4500. I am not knocking the spec at all. I do think you get a great bike at the GX level. I just know that removing the $3000 completes is cutting people out of the brand is all. Pulling alloy frame options from the line-up took away an option for riders to afford better spec. Do you disagree?
  • 2 3
That's the stupidest shit I've ever heard, this week.@Motoracer31:

@plyawn: So proper Guinness with lumps of casserole beef in it (like its supposed to be).
  • 2 0
 @Motoracer31: I like own-brand knock-off Ribena and i love my transition.
  • 2 0
@speed10: Will they not offer the alu patrol frame next year? that would be a shame as it was at the top of my short list...
  • 7 0
@Motoracer31: dunno man, I’ve been a Transition fan for a while and I’ve bonged a lot of slope sodas over the years. Not saying you couldn’t bong an IPA, but just sayin.
  • 1 0
@DidNotSendIt: yes! a good beer should drink like a brisket sandwich!
  • 1 0
@plyawn: I don't actually know. I hope they do keep the alloy options. I'm just noticing the last 4 bikes the released (tr11,scout,sentinel,spur) don't have alloy iterations. But maybe that will change? The brand seems to be getting momentum, and it's unreasonable to think they aren't going to grow and change in the direction they feel makes sense. Not a knock against them, mind you. I love my Patrol.
  • 40 1
@speed10: we are most definitely not phasing out aluminum. There’s a lot of factors that go into if or when a bike is made in aluminum, but for sure more will be in our lineup in the future.
  • 2 0
@TransitionBikeCompany: Awesome to hear, an aluminum Sentinel is on top of the list!
  • 1 0
@Brz: in the double-XL size please!
  • 27 1
I was telling my sister that I bought a transition sentinel on the phone with a poor connection. She said "what, that opioid that's causing lots of overdoses?" thought I said transition fentanyl... well, mtb is my drug of choice. Also I wish they still made an aluminum version.

Hey Hannah, when you get to work on Monday Tell the boss we need an Al model. I can't buy my daughter a "bike like Hannah's" for 9 grand.

Curious as to what size frame that is, hard to tell on some SBG bikes lol...at 5’7” I’d presume medium, be nice to know
  • 2 0
Yep, it's a medium - I added that into the details.

Hey Hannah, sick bike! Two questions... I noticed you originally had a coil on during your bike check with Fanatyk. Was is it not progressive enough?

Also can you comment on the impact of the 170mm Zeb with its ~5mm higher axle to crown height? That's around 15mm more length. I was wondering if this would slacken it out too much.

Thanks!
  • 2 0
Every time I see Zeb, I think its short for zebedee from the magic roundabout. (might just be an age thing)

I can just see Hannah at the bottom of a race in the team talk...

Not another frame size query lol. But is that really a 200m dropper? Still a lot of post showing and it’s not like Hannah is 6’6”... dream bike for sure tho.
