Bike Check: Josh Lewis' SCOR 4060ST With 27.5" Wheels

Apr 12, 2023
by Matt Beer

Josh Lewis is master of bike sorcery showcased in his 50to01 video segments and has been no stranger to the Enduro World Series either. Recently, Josh joined the Swiss brand, SCOR, and built up their highly versatile 4060ST, 140mm-travel frame with 27.5" wheels for blasting jumps in an upcoming project. Traditionally, SCOR's 4060 ST and LT bikes are dual 29ers, with the ability to run a mixed wheeled setup, but Josh has made some adjustments to compensate for smaller front wheel too.

Switching between the stock ST and LT configurations requires a two key suspension components; a fork and shock travel change. By installing a 170mm fork, altering the shock stroke length from 57.5mm to 62.5, and moving the flip-chip on lower link, 160mm of travel is gained out back on the 4060LT.

You can also tweak the head tube angle on either setup by 1.5 degrees on either the ST or LT by reversing the offset bearing cups. In Josh's case, he's running the 4060 with the shorter travel shock and a 150mm travel 29er fork set to the steeper head tube angle.

bigquotesHere is my 4060 ST which is currently set up for riding jumps. I have the suspension set up stiff and the tires really hard as the project I have been working on recently consists mainly of jumps, so I need all the speed I can get.Josh Lewis

bigquotesI love how the week before changing my set up I was riding technical descents with 29 wheels, then the week after with a few small changes I had the same bike doing the complete opposite style of riding... but it felt right at home doing it all. This frame is built around being playful and that really shows in its versatility.Josh Lewis

Tried and true - SRAM's Code RSC brakes are hard to fault. Josh is using 200mm rotors front and back.

I know that 27.5" is dead and all.. but I know a ton of kids, influenced by 50to01 and other jibby/jumpy riders, who are looking for bikes that are set up like this. Maybe it's too niche of a subset of rider, but it kind of sucks that just about every brand has completely abandoned the full 27.5." The good news: lots of those bikes on the market currently as they're "dated."

I love 27.5 For me personally, and my riding style, it's faster.

yup i gave up on getting 27.5 for my next bike, its a bummer. Stupid marketing.

Oh... to further make my point... pretty sure Mitch Ropo did something similar with his Jekyl, because he's looking for something more playful.

27 is dead?? Im still on 26

@joebiden: i like riding a bike that reminds me at least a little bit of the bmx i rode in 1983. a 29er, especially in my suggested size, does not feel like that. it feels like a monster truck. i realize it may make it easier to go over some terrain, but so what?

I ride 27.5 and love it. It's light, nimble, and fun. That being said, my front wheel keeps sliding out around corners, and I could really benefit from some extra traction. Or maybe it's just because I'm running a 3 year old, backwards mounted Minion DHR on my front wheel.

If you have the wedge there are still plenty of V5 Santa Cruz Nomad frames floating around. Normally at a discount too.
  • 3 0
Just buy used. Some average Joe didn't put 1/4 the load on their bike as the rider in your favorite shreddit. Also, 27.5 bikes WERE used as race bikes so it's not like they're gonna handle like a dead fish if you wanna go fast. Been loving my 18' Reign. I gave it a mullet, and Cascade link too and now it hauls the mail. People act like their bike is gonna burst into flames if they don't preserve all the stock Geo,, not gonna happen just ride your bike.

@Glory831Guy: quite amazing to read the belly aching from the comments, on an article that illustrates what can be done if you want to give things a try.

All these clowns clamouring for 275 bikes, yet no one buys em, and for some reason they think all hell will happen if they just swap some wheels and such.

Blows.My.Mind, everytime
  • 4 1
@onawalk: That's what I have been doing, after giving mullets a chance for a few years. Just annoying having to buy a brand new wheel right after a brand new bike. The buy and sell specials of 2018 won't last forever either. Nothing wrong with wishing wheel size preference came as an option. Not sure why it offends you so much.
  • 4 1
you're totally right, I own a full 27.5 spe levo, full 27.5 Scott ransom as a freeride bike and full 27.5 gambler tuned for DH , tried both full 29 and mulet but so boring to ride..

Sold my 29r and purchased a Giant Trance X 27.5 and it’s the most fun bike ever. Flip chip between 64.5 & 63.8 degree H/A. Swapped the 170mm cranks for 165s, thinking about a rear coil next. It corners so well I find myself laughing mid corner.
  • 1 0
@luckynugget: You can fit a 27,5 front wheel on the new patrol without any issue ? bb or crank clearance is fine ?
  • 9 2
Yeah it’s kind of strange that the mtb industry thinks kids wagon wheels will be good for the future of the sport. Clearly, they want to attract old people with expendable income and no skill. These old folks only see the benefits of 29 because they generally suck and their wheels stay on the ground.. meanwhile little johnny is nose-casing his new 29’er in friday fails before deciding bmx or skating is twice as cool and fun. 29’ers will be looked back on as the beginning of mtb gentrification. But more people complain about internal headset cable routing! fashion..

27.5 will never die! Take yer wagon wheels and go win a race. I'll stick to having fun Wink
  • 5 0
For our trails in England especially the north. 29’ers don’t really help and if anything they’re a hinderance. Everything is steep and tight. You’re not going fast enough and the trails aren’t wide enough or straight enough to take advantage of the more stable bigger wheels. We need bikes that are more responsive and will actually fit on the trails we ride which are just all illegally built rake and rides hidden away in the steepest parts of the woods away from the crowds.

@CustardCountry: airdrop bikes are amazing. That's what I've got the secret service riding on

@TheChrisAndrews: What is the actual site?
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: Thats a very good point and one I've made before to my rides mates lasting regret Big Grin I ride in the Tweed Valley but mostly in Perthshire and our rails are mostly shortish, steep and full or corners. I sometimes think the 29" wheel was conceived primarily for use in places like Whistler A line and other runway type trails. Saying that, there are plenty of superb riders rocking 29" in my local trails so, what do I know.
  • 1 0
@Benjidev: 29er wheel is only 1.5 inches (or 38mm) taller than 27.5. Which means the wheel radius is 19mm taller. And the BB is about 40% of the distance from the rear axle to the front axle. So simply switching to a 27.5 front wheel/tire will drop your handlebars 19mm and drop your BB by about 8mm. Some 20mm higher rise bars or a few headset spacers brings the bars back up, and running slightly less rear sag will bring the BB back up, if you even notice the 8mm.
  • 1 0
@robw515: Thanks for the answer. It might also change your headset angle unless you use a spacer under the headtube (like the one on jack moir's canyon strive). I am most worried about pedals strike but 8 mm seems managable especially with 165 cranks (added benefit you follow a new trend). Might give it a look when time and budget comes for a new bike.

@Leviathandive: i just got a knolly warden lt in dual 27.5... hope they have another sale here soon as the price is nuts. $5200 for an nx build alloy bike is crazy. In knollys defense, the brakes and drive train are the only things that change between the builds. you're paying for excellent suspension and wheels

 @onawalk: Nothing new about 29 (700c)
  • 4 0
@onawalk: So you think converting even 25% of 29 to 27.5 with good geo is possible?
Why do you find the “bellyaching” over no 27.5 options any more so strange? Why would people who like 27.5 bikes not like them anymore? They’re fun, not obsolete. They ruled the majority of the market till about 5 yrs ago. Still ridden in most ads/edits with the most progressive riding.

What improvements have 29ers brought? Why would someone happy with 27.5 want the reduced versatility (increased weight, size, sluggishness) of a 29’er? It’s not like people were having difficulty ripping in 2017-2018 on their sub-35lb 27.5 bikes. I kind of love jumping, slashing, footplants, and not having a tire in my crack, don’t you?
  • 4 0
@emptybe-er: exactly, there's a reason most of the pros are on custom 27.5 and 26 mullet versions of bikes. The bike companies think we are f*cking stupid
  • 5 0
@emptybe-er: It's funny how many people got sold the very top of the marketing bell curve. Bring back full 27.5 options.
  • 3 0
@luckynugget: Yeah, right?! It’s the hottest load of bs but people seem to keep wondering why bikes are now so heavy and lame. I’ve even heard people say, “well heavier is better than breaking parts all the time”. That was the 90’s. Parts were mostly robust 10-15 yrs ago.

Now instead of watching riders like Shaums, Bender, Wade, Watson, Thomas, Robbie, Romaniuk, Berrecloth progress what’s possible on a bike, people are interested in watching Ritchie Rude and Jared Graves work out. It’s not a great trajectory imo.
  • 4 0
@noodlewitnosteeze: I’m with you! Bike industry trying to water-down mtb for $. How about bring 27.5 back so we can still get through a set and ride trail on the same bike. I feel like we just getting there with 26 around 2010, then came 27.5 a few years later with better geo, fine, then they’re like ok if this is better we should definitely make them 40lbs with road wheels and wireless electronics. That should bring the nerds with $ in, huh?
  • 30 2
27.5" wheels? How does Josh even manage to ride?
  • 56 3
You should see it! Riding with 27.5 wheels looks crazy lol he's getting bucked all over the place, spinning, going upside down, and having to spin his bars mid-air! So glad I don't have to do any of that when riding the trail on my 29er
  • 11 1
@ryanandrewrogers: I don't have to do any of that on my 27.5". Must be my insane skills on the rough Dutch mountains.
  • 1 4
After riding both 29ers and 275 bikes, I have to say it is hard to tell a difference between the two. Maybe 29ers roll a bit faster, but 275 wheels are definitely manageable.
  • 4 2
@eebz: the difference becomes very noticeable once you start hitting steeper jumps, and trying to whip/do tricks. 29 feels like your time in the air has been cut in half.

It's been interesting to watch the wheel wars over the last few years. I'm an old guy, been riding MTBs regularly since 1987, and haven't bought into the industry dictating what works for me. I personally don't care what the latest greatest enduro / DH / free ride person is riding as it's pretty much a guarantee their gear is driven by their sponsor and they make it work (even if they don't like it). None of my bikes are "new" tech (my last MTB was an end of model year 2013 Yeti SB66 that I got for 1/2 price) and all are still 26" and I have as much, if not more fun now at nearly 61 yrs old riding as I did when I was 25 (I just don't send it hard anymore).
  • 13 0
There’s only one way to have fun. My way. If you’re not riding a bike like mine or a trail like mine, you can’t possibly be having fun.

flag nickfranko (Apr 12, 2023 at 17:04) (Below Threshold)
Oof, still riding 26? It’s a game changer going to different wheel size because of rollover ability.
I hope you’ve at least demo’ed other bikes rather than just blindly sitting on what’s “good enough”
  • 10 1
@nickfranko: I've ridden both 27.5 and 29" bikes. I live near a couple of bike parks (Black Rock and Alsea Falls) and ride a variety of trails. Neither large wheel size provides enough of an arguement to spend several thousand dollars to change platforms. If I were to go up it would be 27.5" ~ the 29" wheels with decent sized tires are wagon wheels, and not at all fun for my style of riding (that and I'm short 5'7" - big wheels and a small frame, I'll pass).
  • 3 1
@nickfranko: What about all the fast people that rode and still ride 26 on sketchy geo, brakes and suspension just fine? The only difference is bigger wheels watered down handling.
  • 2 0
Good on you. My 27.5 Enduro with 2.6/2.5 tyres feels like a big wheeled tank compared to my 26" HT with 2.4's. Love them both and smaller wheeled bikes are simply more nimble. If I could afford a third bike it would be a 29" "down country" bike for the more endurance focused events I ride some times.

That’s like saying I should go to Mc d’s if the good burger joint is closed. Yes it’s 27.5 but it has been sitting under the heat lamp too long and the pickles are fake.
  • 1 0
@emptybe-er: literally nothing wrong with the trance x. Modern geo, phenomenal spec, and giant's support which is best in the biz. Try to poopoo it al you'd like, but it's an amazing bike and you can't find a better value for 3800.
  • 2 0
@Bro-LanDog: great value, but pressfit bb and seat tube is too long.

@AirdropBikes is the way. Saving up for mine!
  • 1 0
@scotteh: what odd things to nitpick. The seat tube is barely above the seat. Run a longer dropper and slam it if that's your concern.
  • 1 0
@Bro-LanDog: I can barely fit a 200 dropper slammed in a 450 seat tube. The large Trance has a 465 seat tube which means I could only fit 185 drop.

Pressfit bb isn’t a deal breaker but I prefer threaded for ease of home installation / service.

Otherwise it looks great, but why compromise on these things when spending big money and other companies are offering exactly what I want?
  • 1 0
@scotteh: depends on the st angle but I fit my oneup 210 on any of my giants and they're still not slammed. I don't have particularly long legs either, 32in inseam on a large. I don't understand unless maybe you're on a bike too big.
  • 1 0
@scotteh: also, lol@ seat tube being too high when the man the article is about runs his saddle 100mm above the st
  • 1 0
@Bro-LanDog: Lucky you. I’m 6’ with a 32” inseam but I do a lot of technical climbing and have a nagging injury so run my seat a little lower than most. No reason not to have a 440-450 seat tube on a bike this size IMO.
  • 1 0
@scotteh: technical climbing? When the seat is slammed? There's minimum insertion depths for droppers, you need some meat to support droppers for tall people it goes both ways.
  • 1 0
@Bro-LanDog: No, my post is obviously extended for technical climbing, it’s just that my full extension is probably lower than most.

I’m generally the exact height most brands say should be on a large, which usually have seat tubes from 420-460. With my seat at my preferred height and a 450 seat tube I can run a 200. With a 465 seat tube I only get 185. More drop is preferable to less drop. This isn’t hard to understand.

If someone is so tall they’re running a 240 dropper at the minimum insertion line on a 450 seat tube, the bike is probably too small for them.

I’m going to stop responding to you because you’re being intentionally obtuse. Enjoy your long seat tubes.
  • 1 0
@scotteh: it's not though. Most dh bikes have seats higher significantly than they can be. Max dropper post drop to the seat tube is a non issue for literally anyone.
  • 2 0
@Bro-LanDog: Can’t really disagree with what you said and I like that they’re offering it. But it’s definitely the most sole-less option and that toptube needs to go back to 2000. I fully support simplicity and infrequent redesign, but the Trance has always looked awkward to me. And the whole maestro thing, I generally prefer designs without lower bb links, just don’t care for the ride.
  • 1 1
@emptybe-er: that's all fair and valid criticism but if you cannot support the big brands that are keeping 27.5 around it's destined to be niche product with little options in the future.
  • 1 1
@Bro-LanDog: It already is niche, and it wasn’t because 27.5 wasn’t selling, it’s because more and more high-end purchases were 29 and the industry went where the $ is, understandably. Most people willing to drop more than 5k on a bike prefer wagon wheels and tool storage because they aren’t coming off the ground.
  • 1 1
@emptybe-er: sounds like compared to 29rs, 27.5 bikes weren't selling.
  • 1 0
@Bro-LanDog: 29 only outsold 27.5 at the top tiers because people buying more expensive bikes can’t ride and want big wheels. I can’t fault the industry for capitalizing but how about some options? It’s kind of ridiculous. Now in order to make 29’ers look fun in an edit they have to be turned back into 27.5. Nothing new has happened on 29, 27.5 and 26 have already done it and done better.
  • 6 3
It’s a Santa Cruz with much better cable routing

 My kinda spacer stack guy!
  • 1 0
@mattbeer It would be really interesting to know reach, stack, and BB height after the mods. BB height is often a concern after unsanctioned 27.5" wheel swaps.
  • 2 0
@fentoncrackshell I'll update this space if we can get that info.
  • 4 0
@fentoncrackshell Here is the info you requested, straight from SCOR.

In ST mode, dual 275" wheels, 29" fork at 150mm travel and the..."flip chip in hi BB mode, it lifts the BB by 6mm and closes angle by about 0.4°.

So BB height is 331mm, HT is 65.9°, ST° is 76.9°. reach and stack will slightly change R: 464mm S: 610mm"

Glad to see there are still a few people that haven't drank the 29'er cool-aid. I can't stand 29'ers & I've tried many.
Cold day in hell before I ever buy one.

Tell me more about these "tubes" thingies...what are they and what are they for???
  • 5 3
For a rebadged BMC, it doesn't SCOR badly...
  • 5 3
This is not a rebadged bmc, its designed by bmc engineers n owned by bmc, but show me the bmc bike in their catalouge that looks like this? It is its own thing for sure
  • 3 3
@doctorfuzzz: as you said, BMC engineers and R&D, BMC capital, same customer support and dealer network, so, in short - a rebadged BMC. can't blame them for wanting to distance themselves from their XC lineup
  • 3 1
@doctorfuzzz: It's obviously not a rebadged BMC. That being said, I'm pretty sure I've seen a development story on these and the test mule was actually a heavily modified BMC Speedfox frame.

If scor came out with a 27.5 bike they would become the supreme champions

I would pay yeti levels just for a 27.5 bike

Fun Fact: As I know the chainstay protector is inspired by jumpline of Chaumont. Not one from Châtel.

@Alturis Ah, right you are. Maybe I need to revisit the area and brush up on my geography.

he might be wrong, according to industry 27.5 isn't dead, but it's only for freeride/downhill bikes!
