Bike Check: Loic Bruni's Specialized Demo

Bruni is coming into the 2020 season as the man to beat. After a tense finale last year, he was the first rider to win both the World Cup overall and World Championships since Sam Hill in 2007. He's back this year hoping for more success on the mullet version of the Demo that Specialized released earlier this year.

Specialized switched up the sizing on the Demo and Bruni is running an S3, which represents a stock reach of 446mm. His geo may be slightly different, though, as he is also running an offset headset and eccentric BB to dial in his perfect numbers. The Specialized Gravity team keep their set up details pretty close to their chest, and there's clearly something going on in the middle of this bike that we're not allowed to see, but here's what we can tell you about Loic's bike.

photo
Bruni is still running the mullet set up that took him to the World Champs and World Cup overall double last year. As for the tires, someone had to work overtime with a Sharpie to black out the distinctive yellow and blue Michelin logo on the cut-spike DH Mud tires.

photo
A look at the custom link Loic is running on the Demo. Apparently this gives him some extra progression on the stock Demo. While it would probably make the bike ride worse for mere mortals like us, it's something you need when you hit things as hard as the four-time World Champ.

Specialized's impressive in-house machine shop allows them to quickly create frame parts like this in order to test ideas out in the real world, like this previous custom link for Loic Bruni from 2019.

photo
"What's in the box? What's in the boooox?" We're still unclear what's hiding in here although Loic's mechanic did let slip that Loic is running some special damping on his shock. Could Ohlins be hiding some new tech under this carbon fiber contruction?

photo
Loic's Magura MT7 levers come with a custom lever shape. We don't know what that wire under the bar is but...

photo

...it's connected to this switch.

photo
Some adjustability was added to the 2021 Demo including a flip chip in the Horst pivot but the team has added to offset headset cups and an eccentric BB to further dial in Loic's geo. There's no word on what the final numbers are, though.

photo
His Joystick bars come in at a 780mm width and 28mm rise.

photo
203mm rotors help with stopping power in wet conditions.

Plenty of one-off bits of kit adorn Loic's frame

Wheel weights keep things stable in mid-air.

The ridges on this custom chainstay protection are much closer than on the stock model.

Uh, are we not going to talk about the wire coming off his left grip?! Does the Ohlins have lock-out or something?

Probably electronic active suspension. Ohlins has been doing it on high end motorbikes for a while. www.ohlins.com/product/ttx36-mkii-ec

@lastminutetech: Ive been riding the new spec dh tires lately and the slow rebound is really good. Much faster rolling, and lighter than the DHF that I have been on forever. I was not a fan of the narrow spec tires of recent past but these are super good.

Give up TTX? As in F1, MotoGP, LMP and most of the field in any professional auto or motorcycle road course race giving up TTX??

It's most likely a mental thing for Loic (the button)

In a secret recording I have of them, Jack can be heard clearly saying

"When you press this button Loic, things I can't explain happen too you. I've called it the SuperBruni button, and when you activate the setting, your body and riding automatically activates to 130%, however, there is not enough elixer syrum for a whole race run, so make sure you only use it when you have to engage SuperBruni"

Loic - "whats the carbon stash box for?"

Jack - "It has a sandwich in case you get hungry"

It's Gunde Svan level trolling. The function of the switch is to activate and bind competitor R&D resorces into dead end development cycles...or it is a sprint switch?

(Legendary skier Gunde Svan trolled his competition and tve skiing federation in the 80ies by saying he was developing a really fast one pole ski technique and was featured on state television when doing so)

@GreenLineSlayer: not that I think they are (as evidenced by the small shaft diameter), twin tubes (the high end type) do present problems for off road with the high shaft velocities and massive oil flow and don't really solve anything that can't be done with a de Carbon damper. For road racing, twin tubes are the business.
  • 2 0
 Remote Super Bruni Mode.
  • 1 0
@FatSanch: don't most off-road shocks have position sensitive bypasses? Seems to me that that would prohibit the use of a twin tube, or at least make it much more complicated.
Not my field, just speculating.
  • 1 0
If you click into the gallery you can see the grey wire going down to the front sus, and there looks to be a sensor of some type on the fork
www.pinkbike.com/photo/19573784
  • 1 0
@atestisthis: yes, the trophy truck stuff does, but the fox Raptor shocks have an internal bypass which requires an outer tube. I was referring to Offroad im General. You don't see a lot of twin tube stuff on dirt bikes either, and my opinion is it isn't needed on mountain bikes. They sure are cool tech though!

Magura - you can choose from 20 different lever shapes, they all suck because we haven't figured it out yet. Stay tuned for 25 new shapes next year.
  • 17 2
And pay a saint lever price for each of that sincerely-Magura
  • 15 6
@theteaser : I absolutely love my Maguras best brakes i've ever ridden! zero complaints!
  • 25 2
@rockchomper: gotta go shigura, running some slx levers with mt5 calipers. oooooooooooooo they niiiiice
  • 10 1
"They all suck" umm. No they don't, unless your hands are tiny you should be able to find one that works great, that's the point of having different levers...
  • 5 2
@monkeybizz: same here shigura is the way to go didnt like their lever at all, I heard they feel better for people with longer finger but for me the mt sport felt like shit but the mt5 next feels better.
  • 4 3
No idea what you are ranting about. The short levers found on Mt 7 or Mt trail are totally fine. A bit like Shimano, I certainly prefer them over Formula or Hope.
  • 1 0
@ybsurf: what line would you use for this Madura or Shimano?
  • 2 0
@crohnsy: my lbs kept the magura line with royal oil I used my zee lever from my last set on my dh to test it out but will get a set of xt eventually
  • 2 0
@crohnsy: stick to the magura one.. better to have the magura banjo on the caliper end... shimanos olive and pin are perfect for the magura line.. I use Zee and XT levers, both perfect with MT5s and have used both magura and shimano oil with no issues...
  • 1 0
@Lagr1980: some says shimano oil leaks some says not
  • 2 2
@rockchomper: I ran mt5s for a few years and have a couple complaints

Can’t get parts at lbs
Lever doesn’t feel sturdy
Bite point moved out an inch when riding alps
Bleed them every other week
No modulation

Apart from that they are super strong brakes
  • 5 0
@toad321: if you did not like the modulation, and find Shimano's good.. I think there was an issue with the bleed on your maguras..
  • 2 0
@monkeybizz: I have the same Shigura: MT5+SLX Lever. Best brakes I’ve ever had, better than saints, XTR, codes. More modulation AND more power.

In my view it’s a better bleed too because Magura is screw on at the calliper vs shimano push on, but you can use the shimano funnel at the top which is handy.

Recommend using shimano mineral oil as it has a higher boiling point than Magura and the pads are finned like saints. Like others have said just sell the MT5 levers and buy SLX ones plus an olive kit.
  • 1 0
@Altron5000: I've got multiple Shigura sets and use Magura oil in all of them. Never had an issue.
  • 1 0
Shigura all fnin day. Everyone who hops on my bike comments on how great the brakes feel. MT5 calipers + Deore levers, less than $250 in it including rotors.

Stock Magura are tough to bleed, I was having to do mine every few weeks but haven't had to touch them after changing the levers almost a year ago. I just flushed Shimano mineral oil thru the system.

Specialized: How do we re-ignite interest in the Demo?
Marketing dude: Make a cover for top of the shock to shield it from prying lenses.
Specialized: Yeah, but what's different about the shock?
Marketing dude: Nothing...

  • 35 1
So Bruni is 5'11" and rides a bike with 446 mm reach at the pinnacle of the sport. That seems notable considering the current trends...
  • 4 2
I'd say since his suspension is soo well tuned, he doesn't need the added bike lenght for stability.
  • 4 0
446mm reach = smallest size of the new commencal clash, meta
  • 5 2
Why would amateur riders that ride at half the speed of the pros be riding the same bike with the same dimensions?

Loic is looking for as much speed as possible, your average consumer is trying to get down the trail and have fun.
  • 4 1
Probably has a lot to do with the extra wheel base length you get from a 200mm DC fork. If he had a 480mm reach, the bike would be way longer than an enduro bike with 480mms of reach. I do still think reach numbers have grown a bit much though, at least relative to chainstays.
  • 7 9
@4thflowkage: Axle to crown of 200mm dual crown fork is the same as 180mm single crown. His fork length has nothing to do with his reach.
  • 12 0
@jcougs: They're riding the steepest, gnarliest shit on the planet. If long reach was a big help they'd be using it. Not saying that pros and us punters would necessarily have the same setup, but it's interesting how at the tip of the spear the numbers they prefer would be called "conservative" and "dated" by your typical reviewer squid.
  • 6 2
@freeridejerk888: You should go look it up like I did before coming here with your ignorant "lmao okay"
  • 2 0
@withdignityifnotalacrity: Speaking of the gnarliest and steepest terrain, in theory, the steeper the terrain, the longer the effective top-tube becomes due to the inherent nature of leaning back on the bike to compensate.
  • 2 0
@4thflowkage: The wheelbase is 1271 which is long-ish but not particularly crazy. Mostly attributable to the 450mm chainstay.

hold on, Loic is 5'11"? i would thought he was a short dude, my bad...
  • 1 0
@L0rdTom: if you check out a lot of bike checks with the enduro guys you’d see a lot are on older sized bikes. Like I would ride a large firebird at 5 ft nine and fee very comfy. (Yes it’s A bit large) While Ed masters who’s taller is running a medium. Richie rude is also on a smaller bike that you would think. Sam Hill was on a medium for a long time too. There’s also a Pinkbike pod cast about it (guys on smaller bikes) and not wanting to change to larger more current long slow slacker thing.
  • 1 0
Oh a dh bike like we’re taking about there all within like 1 mm of each other for height so no the fork doesn’t do anything here. In the single frown world where travel is upped a lot yes that changes it. We are not in single crown world here buddy. Ps there’s a bike check where maes runs a 190mm 40 on his winning bike @c-radicallis:
  • 2 0
Yes but your climbing with that bikes. Raise the front bars get closer, raise the rear the bars get further. That’s why dh bikes are shorter reach there not ment to be in the riding position on a flat or uphill @arek-hs:

@4thflowkage: exactly the enduro in s4 is 487mm but is around the same wheelbase of the s3 demo

I finally said screw it and got a used jedi. I know people totally slay harder on enduro bikes than I ever will on my jedi. but you know what? this sport is goofy and over the top anyways, why not have a bike to match.
  • 2 0
@adrennan: I almost got a Jedi when they had a clearance sale on them. Shame the Canadian dollar was ~1.40 per 1.00USD Frown

Downhill bikes are race machines to me, I consider them like the F1 cars of mountain biking. And I want one. LOL
  • 8 0
@Ryan2949: the difference is no mortal can ever own the pinnacle of technology in motorsports but its well within reach for mountain bikes. thats part of what makes mountain biking so cool.
  • 7 1
@adrennan: Yep! I tell that to all my friends and family who think I'm an idiot for "spending so much on a bike". It's one of the very few sports that you can actually buy the same parts/technology as the top tier racers, aside from one off linkages or a few shock tunes.
  • 4 0
@adrennan: same thing with motorbikes. For the price of an econobox, you can buy a 200 horsepower motorcycle that weighs 430 pounds and goes 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. You'd be stupid not to!
  • 3 1
And good to see he is on an aluminum frame .. yesss, I made the right choice ...
  • 3 0
@withdignityifnotalacrity: I have always heard if you want the pro level suspension and engine performance you are dropping 10s of thousands on motorbikes. I understand you can get a damn good one for the price of a mountain bike but the point is you can get the absolute best stuff on your bike for an amount that is possible for many
  • 1 0
@withdignityifnotalacrity: I sorta agree with you. But I also used to race motorcycles. And no, you are not getting anything near pro level for anything less than 6 figures. Unless you are racing 600SS or something.
  • 12 1
Weird there's no mention of the thing on the sram bar clamp with a wire going to it out-board of his left brake lever. Must be related to the "special damping" going on with his shock. Electronically actuated lockout or mode selector? Could have two different damper settings he could change between for different section of track, like a more supportive one for hitting turns and jumps and a more sensitive setting for sections where traction is at a premium.
  • 4 1
Probably. Some DH racers have been running remote lockouts on certain tracks before. Usually for locking out the rear on pedally sections.
  • 1 0
Likely a lockout, there is a relatively long flat section on this course where it pays to stand and pedal. Great place to find at least a second, maybe more.
  • 8 0
I appreciate the Se7en reference even though most people on this site were probably born after it came out. Go watch it because it's awesome.
  • 6 0
What’s about the throttle on that left hand grip? Maybe something to do with that magical damper? Com‘on PB! Tell us the full story!
  • 4 0
Probably some variation of Ohlins CES. In Moto GP, which Ohlins supplies forks to, they have these crazy suspension systems that are sequentually programmed, so when the IMU senses the bike is stood up and done with the corner, the suspension settings readjust themselves for the next corner. This actually would make sense for dh racing, whether self adjusting through IMU or under rider control like with a button, so you can have your shock set up for different sections of the course.
  • 1 0

Looks fast standing still. I'm sure that Specialized is tight lipped on details but would be nice to include at least that Loic is 180cm to get a sense on frame to body size. With the changing sizing of Specialized bikes this seems relevant to people looking at the new sizes and trying to figure out where they could land.
  • 5 0
Nice looking bike however you'd think specialized would have the R&D budget to run tires that aren't blacked out LOL
  • 23 0
I sorta think it speaks to how committed Specialized Gravity is to winning. Not locking into the Specialized brand or a certain product line allows them to choose the absolute best product available for the given conditions. Why spend the money on tire R&D when they can continue to invest in frame development which is no doubt their core competency.
  • 3 5
I think they're blacked out because they're Michelins and not Specialized Butchers

  • 1 0
@sambobcat: this is interesting, the cut wetscream always seemed like it was *the* go-to tyre for intermediate wet to full wet conditions, when they made the Shorty I would have thought it should have effectively been a production cut-scream.

The riders obviously don't feel that's the case though.
  • 2 2
@ratedgg13: Thing is, a blacked out version would outsell the horrid yellow blue one by 10 to 1 if they would ever offer it.

Rear brake line is zip tied to the chainstays as well. I'm not sure what the stock routing is, but this seems a bit odd. Maybe stock is internal and they wanted an external routing option?
  • 4 0
I think stock comes out near the BB, then goes back in to the chain stay and comes out on the interior of the rear triangle. Probably just wanted external so they can swap brakes more easily or somethingn

I have my name on a sticker on my bike lol
  • 2 0
Can anyone explain to me what the reasoning for wheel weights is on a DH bike? Rotational weight keeps it more stable?
  • 4 2
It's to balance the weight opposite the valve.
  • 7 2
@DonnySoldier: not even necessarily opposite of the valve. More likely to balance out inconsistencies in the tire.
  • 1 0
Put your bike in a bike stand and get the rear wheel spinning super fast. You'll notice the bike will rock up and down quite a bit from the wheel not being balanced.
  • 1 0
@thegoodflow: sort of, they normally set it up so the wheel is spinning almost perfectly, but after that i don't think they tinker with it much, so if they decided to switch tires for race day i don't think they redo the wheel weights
  • 1 1
why the chainstay rubber? wouldn't a rear mech clutch keep the chain tension taught enough to prevent chain slap? or does everything change when you're traveling at mach one down a trail?
  • 1 1
I remember the old specialised demo which I thought was. That transitioned to the asymmetrical frame used by Gwin. They have changed it again -this new demo frame is very ugly but if it works then who cares?
  • 1 0
I think Specialized makes some really great stuff.......But Dam, people complain about ebikes being ugly...That rig is hideous.
  • 6 0
The problem with E-bikes isn't that they're ugly, it's that they're not bicycles.
  • 1 0
The mystery switch activates a remote shock unit under the carbon cover; possibly with an electronic active control/IMU function. It's a safe bet.
  • 1 0
Did anyone else notice him adjusting (locking) his fork damping mid race run?
gotta believe he had two setups ready for the lower section of that track...
  • 2 0
Ohlins CES technology trickled down to MTB shocks?
  • 2 0
It reminds me a lot of the old demo 8
  • 1 1
I'm thinking that there's some form of weight hidden behind the carbon cover. It's pretty central between both axles, the cables on the bars could just be a decoy.
  • 2 0
No I fo about the eccentric bottom bracket?

Seems like it's a one-off team only piece....

"Some adjustability was added to the 2021 Demo including a flip chip in the Horst pivot but the team has added to offset headset cups and an eccentric BB to further dial in Loic's geo. There's no word on what the final numbers are, though."

@Trudeez: it's just a normal eccentric bottom bracket (that's why he runs the older sram cranks instead of dub) apparently he uses it (at least he did last year) to increase the chainstay length by 12mm, he also pushes the headset cup forward so the reach is the same

“ While it would probably make the bike ride worse for mere mortals like us, it's something you need when you hit things as hard as the four-time World Champ.”

Lol...I don’t buy that for a second. There are some successful racers on platforms that don’t require so much tech to actually function properly on a race course....and there are those that are not.

I think its more about the general tuning characteristics of the fork and shock than the tech. The proto damper detracts from my above statement but I wouldn't be shocked if I swung a leg over a pros bike and hated the feel of the thing when its ridden at my pace.

@Breeconay: I just rode my bike after 6 weeks sidelined with a broken hand. The suspension was still tuned for the last DH race I did and it was still way too stiff. I couldn’t imagine getting in one of these pros bikes and having it feel good even at full health.

Attention to detail stopped at the tacky Hardware shop washers on the taped up carbon cover.

An aluminum frame??? Is that even allowed in this day of supercarbonesium?
