Bike Check: Maxime Chapuis' Specialized S-Works Enduro

Mar 27, 2020
by Daniel Sapp

Maxime Chapuis was one of many racers geared up and ready for a season of EWS races when things changed just a couple weeks. If things had gone according to plan the first EWS of the season would have been this weekend in Manizales, Colombia.

With a dialed bike ready to go, Max decided to go ahead and take some photos himself and help us put together a bike check on his fresh S-Works Enduro since we, along with most of the rest of the world, are practicing social distancing.

Max made the switch to enduro racing from DH three years ago in order to experience more than just the DH track while riding. Calling Geneva, Switzerland, home he has an abundance of terrain nearby to train on and easily access to ride. After a 12th place finish at last year's Val Di Fassa, Italy EWS, Max is coming into 2020 hungry for some top-ten finishes when racing finally gets underway.
Rider Name Maxime Chapuis
Age: 25
Height / Weight: 185 lbs / 84 kg; 5'11"/ 180cm

Specialized S-Works Enduro Details
Frame: S-Works Enduro, 29" wheels, S4 size
Fork: Ohlins RXF36 m.2 Coil - 170mm travel
Shock: Ohlins TTX 22M - 170mm travel
Wheels: Roval Traverse
Tires: Specialized Butcher, BLK DMND compound F/R
Drivetrain: SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS, 34t chainring
Brakes: Magura MT7 with Bruni levers
Cockpit: Renthal 780mm bar and stem

Max has his Enduro set up to take the beating of an EWS track. With coil suspension, an e*thirteen chainguide, and thick casing tires, the bike should handle hard hits and keep on chugging. Max likes to always run a Cushcore insert in the back tire and in rougher terrain will often run one in the front as well.

He uses the SWAT storage box in the downtube of the bike to keep some ride essentials in case of a puncture or accident. In the box, he keeps a spare tube, spare derailleur hanger, tire lever, CO2, and some tape, along with some zip ties - supplies that everyone should carry on the trail and know how to use.

Ohlins coil suspension front and back.

An e*thirteen chainguide keeps things in place when the going gets rowdy.

Magura MT7 brakes with the Loic Bruni designed levers provide stopping power. Supacaz grips provide a sticky contact point.

Renthal handlebars at 780mm wide and a Renthal stem.

Specialized's Butcher tires along with Cushcore keep traction on the mountain for Max.

That's a seriously sharp looking bike! And I generally don't like Specialized...
  • 14 1
 Same same
  • 39 3
I dig the color. My 2010 Enduro had the same paint job. Sure beats the drab earth tones we’ve been seeing the last few years.
  • 9 4
I think it looks pretty shonky. The hell is wrong with me?
  • 9 0
@BenPea: I don't know. What does shonky mean? I know Kona has a dirtjumper called that.

Looks dated with that slack seat angle.
  • 2 1
@tobiusmaximum: Oh. Then to @BenPea's question -- no idea what's wrong with him. Haha!

@RedRedRe: We all know radness doesn't start until 105 degrees.
  • 4 1
 yep, baller bike!!!
  • 2 1
Test driven it the other day, really good stuff, but the the colors ....
  • 3 0
 @tobiusmaximum: US equivalent - janky
  • 1 0
@TheR: with respect to BenPea... that is only the technical definition. he may not mean that. i would probably be more inclined to use 'shonky' as a word for something like 'looks like a bag of spanners'. not sure if that even makes any sense stateside.

(disclaimer: to avoid confusion, i don't think this bike looks like said 'bag of spanners')
  • 3 0
 @mmarkey21: that's it, janky. Shonky's Welsh I think.
Sad that the previous Demo didn't set the tone for all their bikes for a decade. Lopsided stunner.

The linkage is wonky. In a few years it will look like one of those old Ellsworths.
  • 4 0

@mashira: I felt let down with this Enduro, initially. I liked the X design. But it has grown on me, and I definitely like this color. I’ve seen it in person at the shop — it’s a beast. Just a big, burly looking bike.

It's scary how "normal" 29ers are looking now. This thing must be absolutely huge.

Ya they should have made a dropout system to accept 27.5 wheels for the #jumpoveryourhead community. Sick looking build minus the hilarious 4 foot dropper and boat anchor drive. I'd have that close to 30 lbs, that thing must weigh as much as my DH bike.
  • 8 0
 Probably shows up on radar
  • 2 0
Yeah my XXL Megatower makes the 29" wheels look small.
  • 3 0
the S5 Enduro has a 2inch longer wheelbase than an XL V10
  • 13 2
I have one, it's surprisingly agile and the geometry feels very natural... best bike I've ever been on!
  • 1 0
Yeah, 27.5 wheels are looking small. Lol.
  • 4 1
@kittenjuice: I don’t hate short people but being 190cm tall I honestly don’t care for 27.5 inch wheels
  • 1 1
 And there is S5 size! (that's S4)
  • 1 0
@ianz2: S5 is about the same WB as my XL Murmur ~1300mm.

@TypicalCanadian: Can't say I've heard or martin mars before... is he new? also sam hill comes from full DH racing so he doesn't count. Also please go on with more names of enduro riders that can win an actual WC DH races lol pretty sure you just named the only two.
  • 10 1
Wasn't enduro always "just downhill stage racing" though?
  • 7 2
@SvenNorske: Richie says "Don't drink from your doped friend's bottle" too.
  • 1 0
 As is mended to be!
  • 1 3
 @nismo325: THIS. Exactly this.
  • 1 0
@nismo325: good auto correct joke, ya really got me there, wicked burn.

Also, you seem to have reading comprehension issues. The comment that started this was about Enduro riders not being able to “fully race DH”, not about winning DH races (which 95% of the WC DH racers can’t even do, since it’s the same 5 people winning). I just named those two because they’re solid riders, and Martin showed up and won out of nowhere. You’re welcome.

As a parent when you hear the word ‘accident’ the first thing that comes to mind is...brown. And given the current situation regarding TP I think it’s a sensible choice to keep the swat box loaded, just in case.
  • 2 0
I always bring some emergency TP with me. Isn't that standard?

We need a GX level AXS... For those of us who wince at the idea of a $700 derailleur.
  • 1 0
@Abacall: Super Record on my road bike(s)? No issues. XX1? Um, no...tore off three GX Eagle in one year....not that mad at my money to get AXS (yet)
  • 9 0
Any details on crank length, rotor size, pedals? A little insight on why he chose certain components would be interesting.
  • 8 2
Because they are the companies that are sponsoring him.
  • 3 0
@chrismac70: True but even among his sponsors lineup there are choices, for example I'm wondering why he's not running carbon bars (personally I like the look of the renthal aluminum ano bars way better but still) considering everything else on that thing is basically as baller as it gets.
  • 1 0
Yeah, some more info would be nice, instead of basically just an advertisement.
  • 1 0
@BrigadierBuege: I have the same bar....pretty baller and no carbon needed.
  • 7 0
Why two hose ports going into the brake side chain stay??
  • 2 0
 I wondered that too
  • 4 2
One for the brake and one for the derailleur housing. With AXS this hose ports is not used any more.
  • 6 4
@dustplayer: a derailleur housing isn't much use on the brake side chain stay
  • 3 0
@petrfd: It wraps around under the front of the swingarm to route to the rear mech.
  • 3 0
One is for the brake line and one is for the derailleur. The derailleur line feeds in and across to the drive side inside the swingarm. It's a slick design and routing is a breeze, I was pleasantly surprised.
  • 2 0
 No DP with AXS
  • 1 0
@Tmackstab: Really??? I thougth it was for a brain system
  • 5 0
What does it weigh? Is it any lighter than a demo?
  • 1 0
The Enduro weighs around 32 depending on build. Could probably be built up to 31 with lighter tires. Coil shock and blkdmnd tires though, prolly 34.5lbs.
  • 1 0
My hope is other riders are briefly looking at my rear wheel, so I don't care as much about looks. I will say I actually like this color. Got a chance to demo this ride on Captain Ahab at last outerbike. It's probably the most capable bike I've ridden (does everything very well as most reviewers agree), but at nearly $10k it better be!
  • 1 0
Interesting how slammed that stem is with minimal spacers and a short cut steerer. Possibly the bike has a pretty high stack height to begin with? Haven't checked the geo but it stood out to me in the pics.
  • 1 0
Yes you are correct, I´m 5´8´´ on S3 size and I´m running only 1 spacer under stem (20 mm rise bar). My friend is riding on super foxy and he has lot mor spacer under the stem and higher rise bar than me and his bar are still little bit lower than mine when bikes are next each other.
  • 3 1
Must be pretty stacked for an MTB racer at that height and weight. Fair play.
  • 4 2
i just don't like the aesthetics of a ´box´ at the bottom of the saddle. bergaldaffer!
  • 1 1
Would it be possible to take one of these frames, but put 27.5 wheels on it with a 200mm fork to pull the front end up? Obviously with no intention of using it for climbing. Kinda like Aggy's rampage bike.
  • 1 0
@C0yotekid: the point would be to not have to run 29" wheels.
  • 2 0
Cockpit: Renthal 780mm bar and stem.

This guy is taking stem length to strange new places.
  • 1 1
Dat seat tube angle...notice the seat tucked all the way up to the front. And if you are a longer guy, you will be sitting on top of reat wheel. Well, atleast it's easy to pop wheelies. Wink
  • 1 0
Ohlins seems to be making a comeback after their first foray into bikes. Is it decent?

  • 2 0
I had to look it up, because I thought it was the sexiest thing on the bike, I think it’s the 6 degree rise that makes it look so short, but yeah 33. Lola was shorter than my Atlas 35. A stem is the only thing I get envy over someone having something shorter than me.

WTF is S4 size, why Specialized why?
  • 4 1
So people don't bother if they are S,M,L or XL,.. and rather start looking at numbers and choose the size based on their preferences and riding stye.
  • 4 1
Basically S4 is an XL... Why they didn’t just call it in XL, is beyond most people
