Bike Checks: 3 Slopestyle Bikes From Crankworx Innsbruck 2018

Jun 14, 2018
by Paul Aston
The second stop of Crankworx is with us. Some poor weather meant that the Whip-Off competition from last night has been postponed until Friday, but slopestylers are getting practice in and tricks dialed ready for Sunday's grand finale. Our man in the middle of the action, Szymon Nieborak, beamed over these images of bikes from Jakub Vencl, Lukas Knopf and Peter Kaiser.

Peter Kaiser is riding for Morpheus, the brand that launched Anthony Messere sky-high to instant fame at CWX in Whistler back in 2011. He chooses the full suspension Vslope with maximum pressure and minimum volume in the suspension. He also has a Pike DJ painted in a classic Judy SL colorway, hopefully, this will be available to the public like the cherry red BoXXer.

That Morpheus looks awesome, especially with the old school just sl color scheme... Then I saw the rear drops and almost barfed!
  • 13 1
the rear looks like ass, but it allows for tons of customization, using this system they can create the shortest chainstays, and is much more secure than traditional bmx drop outs.
  • 12 2
@pierson100: ya, I get why they do it, but I still don't like it.
  • 7 0
These dropouts were 100% the deal breaker for me a couple years ago when I was buying a bike. I loved everything else about it, but I couldn’t get past that.
  • 7 0
Rockshox biggest fail this year was not bringing out the new Boxxer in the 20th anniversary OG 1998 Boxxer pro replica aka their best design ever.
  • 6 2
Honestly I like the dropouts. They look serious

The fact that I've ordered myself a set of 1997 Judy SL stickers for my Lyrik just three weeks ago, makes me feel a bit good about myself, especially after this. But truth be told, I am rocking 1998 SID stickers on my Pike 454 that takes care of my Jackal since 5 years now...

@heavyp I feel you dude! RockShox graphics these days are so boring that one falls asleep just looking at them. The mid to late 90's had the best schemes ever, especially 1997 and 1998, with black and cream as main bases for the Indy and Judy line plus the differently colored cores: black, red, blue, silver, yellow. Some brands, like Bontrager, had special stickers which were color-matched to their frames. But I will go one step further and say that Peter Kaiser missed the opportunity to make a throwback at a fork that was about a million times more fascinating than the standard Judy SL: the factory-only slalom-special Judy DS in red with blue core. Now THAT would've been really cool! Big Grin

That Morpheus just gave me diarrhea.

 Cool skip-tooth cog tho
  • 1 0
@pierson100: I wouldn’t argue that it is more secure bolts over welds. The triangular joint that is welded is likely stronger.

ROCK SHOX do yourself a favor and release the OG JUDY colorway before we revolt!!!
  • 2 0
i still remember crying a bit wheni snapped the brace on my SL‘s, seeing that colour being sent over the booters today i need a set again, not want, or even use to any degree, even black stantions to mimic the rubber booties. We want these now RS.
  • 1 0
@l0key: I punched a hole through the lowers in my 96 Judy SL halfway through a 50km race. Rode it home no worries. Replacing one lower leg still wasn't cheap.
  • 15 0
That's the '97 Judy SL colorway - the first two model years were all yellow with just the RockShox near the fork brace and JudySL by the dropout. These are still awesome though!
  • 2 0
its the 97/98 colour. you're right though and in 1999 they went to total crap! those were horrid
  • 5 0
@makripper: the ‘97 Judy looked ace but was utter piss to actually ride. Horrible things. The Z1’s I replaced them with were from another planet.
  • 1 0
@mindmap3: oh man those were so sick! 80mm of plush useable travel. Heavier but well worth it
  • 1 0
Oh wait, some had 100mm didn't they?
  • 9 0
Judy SL Yellow is back on the menu boys......I remember being in CW Rotorua and talking to the SRAM rep. Told him that RS better do the right thing and bring back the original yellow with the new Judy forks. It's a no brainer.
  • 5 0
 Sid blue was nice too!
  • 10 1
So everyone hates on the throwback new red Lyrik/Boxxer, but goes gaga over the red, yellow, white (a little), and black throwback Judy/Pike DJ. Smh... PB comments... #confusion
  • 5 0
If you were around in the Mid 90s you would understand that the only colour more iconic than Judy yellow was Purple Ano!

 Shortsightedness

I'm digging the old school Judy paint job on the Pike, but nobody is going to mention the fantastic contrast that provides to the mechanical beauty of the prototype hydraulic gyro? So sexy.
  • 4 0
That hydro gyro is brilliant but it shows how slowly improvements are happening on dirt bikes as that is still a prototype.
  • 1 0
 @vid1998:
It's a prototype for a new model there already selling that trixer for a long time

  • 8 1
Can you imagine how outdated geometries these bikes have? They should get a Pole before they hurt themselves on those huge jumps
  • 5 1
Saw the old school yellow Rock Shox. I do not wish to be reminded in any way about those crappy forks. Sometimes the past deserves to be buried for good.
  • 5 0
LOL those were a godsend compared to my INDY C fork!

my first suspension fork haha

@makripper: Hah! My 1st set of suspension forks were a set of Scott Unishock corbon forks. Shit was flexy as hell!

@makripper: I too had a bike with the Indy SL in '98! I think the only big difference with the SL compared to C was the SL had an aluminum steerer, coated stancions and bling top caps, but otherwise was the same internals. The preload on those forks was a joke...only compressed the spring a fraction of an inch and didn't do anything to change sag. The S model Indy from same year in '98 still rocked old school elastomers. I can't believe RockShox got away with that design for so long... They continued it with the Jett fork after too.
  • 1 0
@FurryCrew: Manitou Mach 5’s for me! On a Marin Nail Trail FS. Those were the days!
  • 3 0
@makripper: ha ha. They were absolute turds.

‘97 Judy XC’s were my first forks. They were like a nerf gun on the front of your bike because if you landed a jump or a drop heavily enough, the spring and elastomer would shoot out of the top! The top caps were bloody plastic. I had some RST Mozo Pro 4.5’s too. They were the days.
  • 1 0
@mindmap3: +1 for RST, hope they’re still just using 3 elastomers and a spring for internals!
  • 1 0
I had the yellow and black Quadra 21R that was full elastomer. Those were even more terrible.
  • 1 0
@cuban-b: bet they were half the price of a pair of Judys though!
  • 1 0
DUDE! That thing looks so RAD!
  • 1 0
 SO cool!
  • 4 0
Loving the M90 camo vinil wrap on Lukas' bike! Does anyone know if it could be ordered online somewhere?
  • 2 0
ahh man I am loving the Rock Shox Pike forks with the old skool Judy paint job - if they put them into production I will buy a pair! Also sweet to see RST back in the game
  • 3 0
"Judy sl is what I meant"
  • 3 0
I was going to paint my Reba's like that!
  • 2 0
Lukas' build is very nice! All parts make sense for slopestyle while leaving the whole bike very clean. Pretty perfect.
  • 1 0
That Morpheus has such awesome parts and with that paint its the coolest i love that all the slope bikes are so different from each other too
  • 3 0
Am I the only person thinking the rst forks look sick?
  • 3 0
Is a cross between a Pike and a Judy a Pikey?
  • 1 0
Devils advocate here, that yellow on the fork looks like @$$. Rockshox needs to give up the heritage colorways and make their forks look good.
  • 1 0
RST in the house. I don't want to say they used to be a budget brand, but that fork looks good.
  • 1 0
It looks beefy af. Way heavier than the pike
  • 1 0
I think that Morpheus with that fork might be the sickest slope bike I've seen!
  • 2 0
Pike DJ is gorgeous! Production please!
  • 3 0
 Who's Judy?
  • 1 0
Dammmn that Pike! Been thinking of painting a WC4X in the classic Bomber orange, beat me to it!
  • 1 0
Why not the Judy DH or DHS paint scene though?

The SL was an XC fork not a Jump fork.....
  • 1 0
That Pike looks like my first suspension fork, Rock Shox Quard 21R, love it!
  • 1 0
Why are we not talking about the SB One tensioner? Can we get those in the states?
  • 1 0
That fork takes me back to the first page of my first MTB magazine!
  • 1 0
Morpheus rocks... the dropouts are perfection. Ride one
  • 1 0
Recognized that judy color. So old I am... ehats nect rs1 or mag20?
  • 2 0
 That Judy fork......YES!
  • 1 0
 Make jury dirt jump version
  • 1 0
 Full sus for slopestyle please.
  • 1 0
Is the Bruce the same as the Saracen amplitude alx?
  • 1 1
I hate RS but if they bring back that Judy SL colourway then I'll buy one just to reminisce.
  • 1 0
Imagine a modern yeti dj in turquoise with that pike in Judy SL colourway.
  • 1 0
Skip-tooth cog?! Old is new again!
  • 1 0
That Judy fork colour scheme. Takes me back. Looks awesome
  • 1 0
They should do a Judy xlc style eggplant colour too
  • 1 0
 That fork tho
  • 1 0
 Those Judy XC's!
