Bootleg Canyon's Brent Thompson Suffers Heart Attack - Quad Bypass Scheduled

Jan 15, 2009
by Tyler Maine
Brent Thomson, Godfather and Trail Master of Bootleg Canyon suffered a heart attack last Saturday while riding the trails that he has famously cut into the mountains surrounding Boulder City, a stones throw from Las Vegas, Nevada. While he is currently resting under doctors care in the hospital, Brent is scheduled for the second Quadruple bi-pass in his life. Sixteen years ago he had the same surgery performed due to an unusually high hereditary cholesterol build-up.

Brent's Job Provides No Health Insurance - PayPal Donations Needed"I try to stay in reasonable shape, and was even riding when I started to feel chest pain and severe shortness of breath," says Thomson. "My assistant Andrew helped me out and my son Barret got me to the hospital pretty quickly. Now I'm just waiting to go under the knife."
While everyone who has ridden the trails at Bootleg can attest, Brent's dedication to creating, maintaining and promoting the trails of Bootleg Canyon has created one of the most lauded riding areas in the Southwest. Unfortunately his position comes without a health insurance policy.

Brent's hospital expenses are estimated to grow to hundreds of thousands of dollars, so any help that his friends in the bicycle industry can provide will be graciously appreciated. Click on the link below to donate securely with Debit, Credit, PayPal and Bank accounts. It is simple, quick and safe. Brent's family and friends send you appreciation in advance.

About Bootleg Canyon-

Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park is an extensive network of World Class Downhill and Cross Country mountain bike trails located in Boulder City, Nevada. The area has been visited by riders from as far away as Japan and Germany and has been written up in magazines around the world. The International Mountain Bike Association has certified one of the XC trails as an Epic Ride, a title given out only 18 times so far.

Boulder City is located approximately 40 minutes south east of Las Vegas by the Hoover Dam and beautiful Lake Mead. The riding season is year round, however, temperatures average around 100 degrees Fahrenheit from June through August, so mid-day riding is difficult. If you do decide to come in the summer be sure to bring plenty of water and maybe some head lamps for a night ride. Be sure to check out our sponsors while you're in town for some great Boulder City hospitality.

Absolutely no disrepect to Brent intended - but why didn't he have health insurance? If the answer is he couldn't afford it, maybe he should have hit up Interbike & the bike companies that use his trails to pay the yearly premium. I hope those people have donated a large wad of cash now he's in hospital.
Thre's a lot I love about the USA, but one thing I don't like is that the richest country on earth doesn't have universal free health care. A large tax hike on cigarettes & alcohol would probably pay for it.
Get well soon Brent.

I don't know how rich we will remain with our national debt rising by the second. Seeing as how we owe China updwards of $7 Trillion, we may be knocked off that pedestal, don't forget that we send tons of aid to other countries....where that could be used for our own medical system.

Don't use money to war. That's mine opinion. USA will save a large amount of cash if it quit's war in Iraq.. oh I forgot the damn oil. But wasn't Saudis USA's friend? Well, how ever if you paid some taxes of alcohol and cigarettes you would have a health care in your country like we have in Finland. And we still have enough money what our government can spend on unemployed people and all kind of immigrants who doesn't even try to get some work.

i thought that u could get rejected health insurance in the U.S. to can't u?

i;ve seen the movie Sicko, so im by no means an expert, but if he already had a heart attack and a quad bypass surgery i dont think the health insurance agencies would go anywhere near him, its sad but that the reality

honestly alot of ppl dont know how good we have it in Canada

Citizens of any civilised country deserve the basic human right of health care provided by the Government from tax revenue. No one should find themselves in the position that Brent Thomson is in today - in hospital & in debt. No, this aint that dreaded Communism - it's Social Democracy (as in Europe, Australia, Canada etc) and it's about time the American government bit the bullit and started to look after the people for the common good. If anybody could do it it would probably be Obama.

true dat, i totally agree, Americans complain that we pay to much taxes, but when we break our arm, or need stitches, we dont get a $500 needing to be payed in cash up front, so id rather pay the extra taxes and know that im safe, for me riding my bike in the states would be just plain scary, id be worrying about breaking a bike part and having to replace, and about hurting myself and having to pay for it

I think the reason the USA isn't switching to universal health care is because of two reasons: 1, they're too damn poor to afford it. California alone is just about 40 billion dollars in debt and to be completely honest, they're economy is running on non existent money. And 2, if they WERE to switch to a universal health care system, all the 3rd party health insurance companies would be out of business. Considering how they have the people by the balls, I don't think it'll happen too quickly... if at all. Anyways, regardless of that, my condolences and best wishes go out to Brent Thomson and his family. I hope he gets well soon.

2 tier system like in the Netherlands? I think it's like anyone earning under 40000K annually gets public and anyone over pays private? Can any Dutch people correct me?

Shit that hit's close to home with me, hereditary heart conditions suck, knowing that your potato could literally explode at any moment isn't a fun thing to think about at twenty. Hope the guy gets healthy soon, I know for sure I won't have the same luck when I finally have a heart attack.

My father recently had his 'first' quadruple by-pass. My prayers for a 100% recovery.......donation coming. If everyone gave $1 that is online right now on PB he would have it covered.

Keeping you updated on Brent's condition... Things are not looking good for the trail master. A phone call from his sister at the hospital indicated that he is not expected to survive the next few days if that long. Brent went back into intencive care last friday after more complications in his condition occurred. He is currently batteling most of his systems shutting down. Please send you possitive and loving thoughts to him and his family tonight durring these critical moments. Wishing for a miracle!! Love you BT!

I emailed everyone on the interbike staff. Please do the same, let's make this a petition. They are the ones with the budget, interest and responsibility to step up to the plate.

It's worth a visit to Bootleg Canyon - my riding buddy and I head out there very year in November. It has almost everything - DH, FR, AM, XC and DJ. The people that ride it are awesome riders and awesome personalities.

Does anyone have an update post-surgery?
