Brandon Semenuk's Custom Stereo - Biggs does it Big

Aug 20, 2009
by Jordan Holmes
When we heard JBL was doing a custom stereo install with their sponsored rider Brandon Semenuk, we brought out the cameras and filmed the process from start to finish. Brandon recently purchased a new Subaru Impreza WRX with his earnings from his recent wins and was ready to get the thump put in the trunk.

Click here for the video of the Brandon Semenuk JBL Stereo install...Brandon Semenuk has made a big name for himself in the industry. Consistent slopestyle wins have been treating Brandon's bank account well and sponsors happy and with his recent film work done with Ant Hill films, Brandon's name is only growing. The Whistler rider has been around the world spreading his style, but managed to take some time off to get his new car all dialed in stereo wise.

Brandon's ride gets dialed:

Gary Biggs - The man with the plan
Gary Biggs - The man with the plan

Gary Biggs was flown in to do Brandon's custom stereo install. Biggs is a JBL man through and through, so he knew what he was getting himself into with this stereo install. He came prepared to lay it all down on a tight time line, and hopefully blow Brandon's mind with what he created. Here's a photo of what Gary Biggs had to work with.

In the end, Brandon was absolutely stoked with his stereo install. I had a chance to talk with him at Crankworx Whistler and he said the stereo sounds sick, and everything looks great.

Just noticed... BAD BRANDON. You have your N you're not supposed to drive more than one person. tsk tsk. lol
  • 3 0
Seriously? With your N you can only drive yourself? That is so retarded. Way to promote excessive polluting BC.
  • 2 0
is that sorta like Ontario's silly g1/g2 dealio?
  • 1 2
 Gotta love Canada
  • 3 0
You can drive yourself and one other individual. It's graduated licensing, afaik similar to Ontario yes.
  • 2 0
I have a graduated license, here in Alberta. But there are no stupid rules like that. I just have half the demerits, zero alcohol tolerance, and I can't have more people than seatbelts. But I think that is a law in general, but I have a zero tolerance for it.
  • 2 0
yea it suxs g1 u cant even go on the 400 series high waysFrown
  • 3 0
You have cars in Alberta? jk
  • 1 0
In B.C, you can drive by yourself with your N

Apart from Brandon, I'm not sure why this is a legit pinbike article? sorry.
  • 15 12
Umm, that's like saying, apart from the sick backflip the rider is doing, I don't get how todays POD is a legit pod on pinkbike. It's there ONLY BECAUSE of the rider. duh I thought it was interesting seeing everything getting fitted on such a nice car.

Athlete lifestyle and insight into how these guys get hooked up and live. It's only there because it IS about Semenuk.
Plus, I thought it was amazing that this guy just built the whole box with epoxy/bondo right there and then.
  • 5 4
agreed, for some reason the box blew me away
  • 2 1
its there because we will obv find it interesting. Im now deffo gonna hook up our fiat 500 once its mine Razz
  • 2 0
sort of like the series about the athertons, not just the riding
  • 5 2
i dont understand why people buy a 300 hp awd independant rear suspension car and then add 300 pounds of aftermarket stereo equipment to it. may as well put 20's on it while you are at it. i realize he prolly got it for free but that is the last thing i would do to a vehicle of that caliber. Gut it and put in a bigger turbo.
  • 2 3
maybe it's cos hes not gunna go racing it on the street?
  • 2 2
yeah but it still defeats the purpose of a sports car. If you're going to add a bunch crap in your car like that, get an escalade or hummer. I would rather get performance upgrades on a car like that.
  • 4 1
agreed. no point in buying a sti if ure going to do that to it. super lame. the only good part of that setup was when he took the door panels off, but then he put them back on. so fail. gut it cage it and throw a fatter snail on it.
  • 4 1
Stroke that ego, stroke it good and stroke it hard. Yes, we know. Mr. Semenuk is so much better than the average biker. Look, and have your noses rubbed in it. Besides, I agree with FlyingFish. Just ruined a bitchen car with a bunch of dead weight.
  • 1 3
Dead weight??? He's not racing it, so why does the weight matter? He wanted the speakers, so he bought them, or got them free. If he wanted a race car, he would buy one.
It's his money he can do what he wants with it, and he's probably enjoying this investment a lot.

Thanks for deleting my well thought out and respectful comments twice, Pinkbike. My last one especially was pertinent with only constructive criticism. I suppose you'd rather keep comments that agree with everything you post, even if they have terrible grammar and spelling and generally decrease the readability of your website. Nice work.
  • 6 1
How do you get the spare tire out?
  • 2 1
looks like a pretty basic install i was expecting some mad install with shed loads of Fiberglas super smooth and couple of monitors, inverted subs the works now he needs to send it to crawford for some tuning Wink
  • 1 1
 nahhh, prodrive for tuning Wink
  • 4 2
Interesting process, but I'm not sure I see the point. Its not like the stock STI has bad speakers, so why add that much weight and kill all of your useful trunk space?
  • 4 1
subaru is notorious for bad stock sound. maybe your not an audiophile, so its fine that you dont notice. Subaru took the money from the sound and invested it into the CAR. plus hes sponsored, so they wanted him rockin their shit.
  • 1 1
Meh, I guess I am just an ignorant layman. I'd also guess he's not going to do anything with his scooby other than putter around on the streets.
  • 5 2
So now he needs to nail a Thule sponsorship to find a place to put his bike...
  • 1 1
I'm sure he won't have a problem with that haha
  • 3 1
He has a roof rack he uses. He's instantly recognizable around whistler due to the neon orange bike being bolted to the roof half the time.
  • 3 1
I agree with ManoMano, nice clean & simple system but no sound dampening? That thing is going to rattle like a tin can in a week.
  • 2 1
ya becuase most people come back in a week or 2 and fix the rattling after it all rattles loose. you need to find whats gonna rattle before you can fix it.
  • 2 2
Too bad its all power series and not the gti series gear. I was thinking mad money install.... but thats almost their bottom line gear. Whats with that? Sick install work though forsure.
  • 5 1
I was thinking the same thing. Thats like a bike sponsor handing you a huffy and telling you to sell there product.
  • 2 2
well the deck was top of the line, over 700 bucks
  • 2 1
the deck was from kenwood. So yea I guess jbl would put top of the line in when its not there $ haha
  • 1 1
Actually according to Gary the deck is a brand new Kenwood model that was just released and it retails for $1500 us pretty sweet deck. It has blue tooth usb, navigation, built in sirius reciever...lots of extra bells and whistles. Gary also originally wanted to put in the JBL anniversary speakers which are super sweet but they are to big and he would have had to modify the doors and the tweeter ports and do a bunch of custom work that he didn't have time for. He only had 3 days to do the install and building the box from scratch took up a bunch of time. Time was also a reason that he went with a wood bondo box aver fiberglass. He would not have had the time to build the fiberglass box and let it dry.It was pretty interesting seeing him build it live for sure.
  • 1 0
Oh yea, the deck is ballin. And yea, i guess i have heard stories about the amount of work it takes to get subarus systems pimped since the shallow mounting depth in the doors. So given that he had that little time and whatnot.... it makes sense. Minus the choice of to power series subs. Still think they cheaped out a little. 1 JBL gti mkII 15 woulda easily been more badass. The power series are like 75 dollar subs or something stupid. Cheaped out on subs without an excuse there.
  • 1 1
Gary Biggs very nice job . But nothing compare with JBL GTI series hand made in USA 10 years ago. I have in my ride . 6 speaker system and SUb.If i have JBL support i ask again GTI series nothing else. .
  • 3 1
A "pro" installer who doesn't deaden or even seal up a door on a sponsored vehicle.
Come on JBL, step up your game.
  • 2 1
no dampening while the doors were open? I prefer a stealth setup but that install looks clean, clean, clean.
  • 2 1
im still struggling to see how he affords the insurance. whistler kid living standards are way too high imo.
  • 3 1
no space for his bike now...
  • 1 0
i saw semenuk driving in his new subaru on saturday i could tell beacuse of his orange frame and yellow rims
  • 9 7
 i am so jealous!!

  • 2 1
That is insane! Such a good job!
  • 1 0
does anybody know the song beginning at 10:15?
  • 1 0
There isn't a song beginning at 10:15, there's the hip hop stuff I have no idea about, but two linkin park songs start at 10:35 and 10:42, if you mean those, the first one's place for my head, and the second is one step closer, or at least that's what I think they are.

JBL makes some pretty high quality stuff. Love his car, '09 Subaru Impreza WRX STI in white, one of my dream cars
  • 1 1
who cares about semenuk's stereo? he's a great rider of course, but come on easy with all the advertising pinkbike.
  • 1 3
sick system but i have a full 4000$ system in my car and i have two(2) capasitor caps in my car so my battery doesnt die, i didnt see one in his system
  • 4 1
That's because capacitors are crap for a stereo application. You would need an absolutly HUGE capacitor to be able to discharge enough power to do much of anything. A 1 farad capacitor can discharge 22 watts RMS for one second, whats that doing for your 500wrms sub? A cap also has nothing to do with keeping your battery from going dead, all it does is helps buffer the spikes in voltage so you get a smother delivery to your amp and less of a spike in voltage drops. But, like I said, you would need an absolutely HUGE cap to really help anything at all, and even then a cap won't do shit under constant load; once it discharges it takes time to recharge.

Biggs has his speaker fitting dialed! all the little touches are awesome!

  • 35 1
noooooo his bike cant fit in the back now.. ohwell sick speakers
  • 16 2
nice to see this on pinkbike, something else, great to watch. nothing is a waste of money as long as you like buying it and having fun of it. He will enjoy it for sure.
  • 22 0
 Brandon forgot his pedals
  • 8 0
suicidedownhiller did you ever think maybe people like music? i know i do, i love the feeling of being at concerts, so i made my car to be just as loud as if i were at a concert, not trying to "compensate" for anything its just a rush some people like to get nuthing wrong with it
  • 7 5
Why is Brandon such a BAMF?
  • 4 0
he's going to have to use the roof rack now. he pulled his bike from the boot, it aint gonna go back in!
  • 6 0
his pedals are off coz he pulled the bike out of a transport box easier for storage.
