Building Manon Carpenter’s 2016 Madison Saracen Myst Carbon

Feb 16, 2016
by Pinkbike Staff
Take a behind-the-scenes look as Madison Saracen's team mechanic, Alex Lovett, meticulously assembles his first bike of the season - a 2016 team issue Myst carbon downhill bike, for none other than team rider, Manon Carpenter. The carbon Myst was first seen in Val di Sole, Italy last August at the final round of the UCI World Cup. The frame has since had a bit of a paint job, loosing its stealthy prototype look from last season and gaining the red, white and black livery that the team have become well known for...

With a seatpost in the frame and the workshop stand filled it s time for the most important task of the day.

The first task is to threadlock each pivot bolt into place before adding a shock to the frame.

Assembly grease is used on each contact point of the bike. Attention to these details now will prevent problems when the pressure is on in the world cup pit.
All bikes are built to measure

Awaiting wheels.

Midway through the bike build staff from Saracen come down to check on the progress nobody can wait to see the finished product.
Finally on the scale.

The finished article. One down seven to go.

bigquotesI think the bike looks great! Looking forward to seeing how it goes with the team kit. As always, the new season comes with an updated look for the team. This year, with an extra splash of colour and fresh feel to go with it, the new Myst looks perfect for 2016. I've been having a great time this off season riding and training on the new carbon frame we raced at World Champs, and seeing the new colours makes it feel like race season is finally coming around again! - Manon Carpenter

Looks amazing hopefully a good year for Manon, can't wait to see what Slugger will do after a year off racing world cups.

Yeah, looking forward to seeing Beaumont back, he had some good results in the BDS during his year out.
  • 2 3
What do you mean a year off?
  • 2 0
Slugger was flying up revo on sat. Hope he does well

@bigdrop44 Beaumont didnt do world cup in 2015... was no longer on Atherton GT team, and presumably that happened quite late to secure another ride. He was privateer @ BDS and Fort Bill WC.
was also presenting GMBN on youtube as im sure you know.

I am loving the new paint scheme. It makes the bike look a lot better than the old one. I don't know why, but the bike looks a lot better without the shock.

The red and black reminds me of this i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODI0WDEyODA=/z/4Q0AAOSwl8NVcX9v/$_1.JPG
They've come a long way since then!

Fox needs to offer their spring in other colors at least to the race teams and oe spec
  • 9 10
I agree as orange is my least favourite colour. It still doesn't mean that I will never buy one, I'll just replace the coil with a titanium one.
  • 7 1
I have nothing wrong with orange, it just looks out of place on the bike
  • 6 2
Companies should always offer a neutral colour. Colour coding is important to a lot of customers. The orange spring, the mallet dh pedals for the first couple of years they were out, DVO green trim only. They surely put potential customers off.
  • 8 0
I agree totally. Not sure why I got so many negative responses. Not everyone likes bright neon colours.
  • 3 1
I am not saying that I won't buy Fox suspension as I fucking love it and refuse to use anything else. I am just saying that the colour of the coil is off putting to me. I'm sure if Fox bought out a pink coloured spring only it would get slated by PB users.

It's just marketing. They should do an sls spring in black for consumers though. No question about that. They should include in their contracts that they must use the orange sls for sponsored athletes.

Wap a Ti spring in, done
  • 2 0
I get what they are trying to do, create brand recognition like ohlins have with yellow, wp have with white etc.
Yellow is a lot easier to colour code than orange though because it matches gold anodising.
SA Springs have a nice colour light steel spring though thankfully, for €119

For those looking pretty confused at the bike weight:

35lb 14oz = 16,3kg
  • 24 2
34lbs? That's 14 fewer than my first proper DH bike and it was weak and rode terribly and only had a 6" travel fork and cost over ten grand.

You try telling that to kids these days and they wouldn't believe you.

Remember when Norcos were huge and ugly?
  • 4 1
They were still fun to ride though. But still horrendously ugly and heavy.
  • 8 2
But DH bikes back then where part of the more bigger more better school of thought.

6 inches? Most bikes had huge travel. Remember the Demo 9 or ever wondered where the v10 got its name from?
  • 12 1
haha yes, before the 9/10" bikes, were the 6" bikes
  • 7 0
I guess im not as old school as I thought.
  • 2 0
Now you have to live with it...
  • 6 1
My trail bike weighs 34 pounds. And it's from 2014... Holy shit

They were Risse Champ forks. Before longer travel versions came out. They had 400ml of oil in each leg!

I grew up with Bender riding Karpiel and Cam Mccaul on an Elsworth so oldschool to me is like early 2000's. Even when Cedric Garcia was jumping his Cannondale with a lefty at the dirt park or Ryan Leech was 180 bunny hopping between two railway tracks. Things have progressed a lot since then but the old school stuff is still awesome to watch

@iamamodel I googled them, aparrently they still make them and think someone will pay about 15 hundred dollars for them.

Gorgeous bike, loved my Saracen Ariel trail bike....until thieves stole it!
  • 4 1
Back in the good ole days in the USA, horse thieves were punished with a one time permanent neck stretching. Thus, not many horses were stolen. I think the same should apply for bike thieves. They make me sick.

Just read this and Pivot carbon news: Specs are a mm inch lb oz gang bang

can anyone explain to me why people use a special vice and hacksaw to cut a steerer tube when a pipe cutter is an easier and cleaner tool? are they not supposed to be used? I have used a pipe cutter for my last two bikes and they work perfectly... Am I missing something?
  • 4 0
 I'm a mech, I always use a pipe cutter!
  • 2 0
Pipe cutter for steer tubes every time, there is some thing satisfying about using a good quality pipe cutter !
