California Enduro Series race 1 of 2014

The Battle Born Enduro kicked off the 2014 California Enduro Series on Peavine Mountain, just outside the biggest little city on earth, Reno, Nevada. Conditions were typical of high desert riding, hot, with temps in the mid 90s, and loose, the dirt was popularly described as having the consistency of kitty litter.

Registration for the race was full-up, with 275 racers on course Saturday. Smiles for miles.

Ryan Gardner (Kona) was getting a feel for the loose dirt in practice on Friday. This was his first race coming off an ankle injury, that has left him a bit leery of dropping a foot and getting sideways in loose tight turns higher on the course. This didn't keep him from laying down some solid times. Gardner finished out the race in sixth place in the Pro class.

Reno local Teal Stetson-Lee Luna thumped the womens field laying down a two minute lead over second place Amy Morrison Mike s Bikes . Her choice to run her short travel XC whip with a dropper post paid off on the first four pedally stages and didn t seem to hold her back on chunder riddled stage 5.

Amy Morrison (Mike's Bikes) raced to a second place finish in the Pro Women's field. While she couldn't close the gap on Stetson-Lee for the first four more physical stages, she was right there on the last technical stage, less than half a second back.

Battle Born was Brian Astell’s (Marin Factory) first Enduro competition. With a background in XC he was amped on the Enduro format and is looking forward to a full season of racing.

Doug Thayer (Cyclepaths, Rocky Mountain) made the trip from the other side of Lake Tahoe to take on a stacked pro mens field. He came out on top with just over a second on Gregg Stone of Truckee. Doug is stoked on his season opener.

Casey Coffman (Felt, SR Suntour) put down a fierce day of racing on his hometown trails. He came across the finish line with a quickness that certainly did not indicate the fact that he had just raced the majority of tech-gnar stage 5 with a rear flat and a properly bent front brake rotor, finishing less than three seconds off of Thayer's top stage time. Beast. He took third place for the day.

Ryan Thym (Black Rock Bicycles) is another fast Reno guy. He rode to a fifth place finish just behind Jason Moeschler (WTB) who came up the hill from Nevada City for the day.

Don Morehouse (Kill Trail), a former Reno local yoke, showed up to practice Friday morning fired up. Palpably so. After crashing in the first two stages he reined 'er in a bit and finished out race day strong.

Ariel Lindsley (FOX) laid down solid times for the day, and kept it gangsta, pinning with his locs on.

There were some quick kids out there. Teddy Hayden, who is accustomed to riding tacky Marin County dirt, took a bit to figure out the loose soil in Reno, but prevailed and came out with a second place finish in the Junior Boy's category.

Ryan Gibson (Giant, Bike and Bean) had a solid day on the hill. Gibson is the man behind the forthcoming Stafford Lake Bike Park in Novato. He put together a fundraiser to jointly benefit the Bike Park and Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz who are building a Flow Trail in Soquel Demonstration State Forest (home of CES Finals). A new 2015 FOX 36 will be auctioned off at each event to benefit these two projects.

The Poedunks, the local Reno Bike Advocacy Group, who helped to put on the race made sure that racers were taken care of after the race.

Good showcase of the trails on Peavine. Welcome to the desert. I wish I would have had a lighter short travel bike option, but oh well. So it goes. Lost tons of time to a flat repair and some fatigue in stage 4. I just don't get all the negativity coming from people on this one. Met lots of really cool riders at the race. Best of luck to those who are going to China Peak.

Next race that I am aware of is China Peaks June 20-22. I have heard that course is decent with some good technical sections where this one was an XC racers delight.

Race PCA runs most of the enduro events in SD, but it doesn't look like they have anything planned for the summer...

It's awesome to see so many G-Form pads out there! Mine definitely protected me when I decided to sample the rocks!

I see this and it reminds me how lame the course was.... The local Girl chose her full on XC bike because she knew what she was getting herself into. I thought we were blowing up enduro saying the timed sections are technical gnar that we send on the little bikes.
  • 3 2
Just because it looks lame doesn't mean that it did not still require a lot of descending skill! That dirt is challenging to ride which makes up for its mellow appearance.

Loose dirt does not make up for the fact that the course was sub par. When choosing a shorter travel bike is a winning strategy the courses suck. It is unfortunate they can't use all of the good terrain around Tahoe for some proper European style races.

It not only looks flat and peddle fest in the pics but I was there too peddling away on the flats and uphills 19th/25 in pro and 6th/34 in expert. The event was ran great and I had a good time but the course was lame man.

the uci XC courses are way more technical

@freeskiinschool I am serious when I say this, and in the best most positive spirit, if you didnt like the course and you feel that you have something to offer the sport you should get organized and put on your own race. Share your vision. The CES depends on local groups promoting races, and we come in to provide financial and logistical resources to help the event succeed. So really, if you and your friends can get organized and get a race together we would love to hear from you and help you put on a race! We are all about having there be lots of races, lots of different courses, and lots of new riders! Three years ago, I thought it would be cool to race Enduro races, but there were none local, so I put one on... then met other people who thought the same way, and now we have a series where we can race... and you are invited to participate at whatever level you like...

I do put on my own races. And winter series. There pretty small and local right now but Im currently working on applying for an event permit and event insurance to run an event here in between Mammoth and Bishop. But ya that would be my first big event ran so I probably don't got it all together. I seriously look forward to some of the other ones in the CES series. And maybe after the Mammoth event I could show you some epic rides in the area to think about.

Awesome, look forward to future contact on this. We are truly serious about growing this as a locally motivated grassroots thing. Please email or comment on any post in the CES website that way we can exchange proper contact info. We would love to help you do something awesome in your area if you would like, or come find me at china peak.

Not only bought a $10k bike, you also have to pay to ride it, Enduro!
  • 9 0
You don't have to pay to ride it. You have to pay to race it.
