CAMBr Goes to BC

Sep 15, 2016
by Matt Slager
After an amazing time last year, our group of 8 friends/riders/trail builders from CAMBr (Chicago Area Mountain Bikers) decided to head to BC again this year. Same as last year, Whistler, Squamish and Pemberton were on the list. After talking about it last year, Coast Gravity Park was also added for obvious reasons.

We woke up before the sun to catch the Horseshoe Bay ferry to Coast Gravity park to start the trip. The ferry ride to the sunshine coast was a great experience in itself and probably the only time on the whole trip we didn't have to worry about how we were going to get to our destination. Some much needed rain overnight and into the morning made conditions at the park perfect. Having been to BC last year, I had a pretty good idea what to expect riding wise. That being said I really wanted to focus more on taking photos than I did last year. I knew it would not be easy to do, but that was the plan. Lucky for me, I broke the rear hub on my bike after only about 4 laps at CGP on the first day. So I really had no choice to get out my camera and start shooting. Now since the only thing I had to do was shoot photos, I was focused and not even thinking about riding. I eventually fixed my bike and rented some others, but I was able to stay focused on shooting photos even more than riding for the rest of the trip.

Chicago has no real mountains or even any hills with more than a couple hundred feet of elevation. Because of that everything we rode seemed to be worthy of a photo, from the easy flow trails to the tech double black diamonds like Treasure Trail. The riding and shooting conditions were tougher on this trip than anything I've done before. Even with the crashes, broken bikes and generally not knowing where we were going, every day of the trip was a highlight!

We will be back next year having even more fun being "mountain" bikers for our short time in BC.

I really misjudged the speed. This thing moves!

After 22 years riding with my dad, it keeps getting better. This trip especially.

I was hoping for a clear view, but fog like this made for an exciting ride down.

Khyber pass. Thought about it last year, took it this year along with the other tech trails down to Creekside.

Thanks to Burak for taking over on the camera for this one and Jeremy for letting me rip his Evil. I sure didn't miss climbing the 101 switchbacks to the top on my SS DJ from last year.

Last year we only rode a small percentage of what Squamish has to offer. This year we explored a lot more and there's still plenty left for years to come.

Thanks to Mike for getting this one for me. No time for any self portraits on this trip.

Just like last year, we were already planning for next year. It really is that good in BC.

Stunning man, one day I'd like to get some guidance from you. Just did a trip to Colorado, planning to do a post as well. Fortunately and unfortunately I had a considerable crash that slowed me down by the second day. This allowed me time to get out with the camera and take pictures. I finally feel I'm getting a tad bit better. However, it was all at the expense of a lot of riding time. Made sense since I had a busted shoulder from my crash, but not sure how to properly balance ride time and photo sesh time. Is it just the fact that I'm such an amateur that it takes me so long to set up and get the right pic or is there a secret to how to manage those two? Anyway, hope to see you out in the trails soon.

Thanks for sure! Actually a similar thing happed to me. I broke my bike on the first day, so I got out my camera and started shooting photos. I really wanted to take a lot of photos for this trip, but ride too. I fixed my bike and rented some, but still took a lot of photos. One thing that helped me this trip was that I got a new smaller camera bag that only held a body and two lenses. It was simple so I didn't mind bringing it for most of the rides and taking out the camera a lot. I know what you mean about taking a lot of time to set up, this trip was the first time I felt like I had a good idea of the shoot I wanted before I even turned the camera on. I just takes time and practice I guess.

Thanks Matt, Way to represent the Midwest. Great pics as always. It was cool to see your write up on Pinkbike. I had a great ride yesterday at Palos but now you're making me jealous. Stay safe.
