Camelbak s updated Mule LR

CamelBak M.U.L.E. LR

CamelBak have been at the forefront of hydration pack systems for some time and their name is even a common reference to all packs among the cycling community, with many no doubt asking “Have you got your camelbak?”, rather than using the term “hydration pack.” More recently the brand has pushed to improve the experience of wearing a pack on the trails, adjusting weight distribution to be closer to a rider's hips in an effort to accomplish this.

Details
• Updated helmet carry buckles
• Airfoil back panel for increased airflow and comfort
• Stabilizing load-bearing waist belt
• Dual reservoir compression straps
• Larger diameter tube and connections
• 15L capacity (3L water reservoir)
• MSRP: $150 USD for LR, $110 for the regular M.U.L.E.

With this shift, which can already be found in their Skyline and Solstice packs, we’re seeing the functionality of the LR series make its way into some of the brand's more common staples, like the M.U.L.E. and H.A.W.G. LR is an abbreviation for “low rider,” and packs with this moniker include an updated reservoir that is contained lower down on a rider's lumbar, keeping the center of the pack mass low and toward the hips.

The helmets chin straps are hooked through the buckles and locked across the front of the bag
The bag's contents can now be accessed with a helmet still attached.
Adjusting the reservoir compression straps is easily achieved from the waist hooks
Straps on the waist belt cinch down the reservoir, keeping it secure as the fluid level drops.

The move to update the M.U.L.E. was a big one, if only internally for the team, given that the pack has quite a following and has been a part of the lineup for a long time. For those that are fine with the regular design it will still be available, with the LR style being an addition to the line rather than a replacement. This is the case with all of the packs that will be available in the LR styling. These packs will also include updated helmet attachments, which allow riders access to the inside of the bag without removing the helmet altogether. Updated webbing through the lumbar area and adjustable from the waist (though separate to the waist strap adjustment itself) allows riders to really cinch down on the reservoir, making sure that it remains secure within the pack as water is removed—a great feature to aid with pack stability on the trail. 2017 packs, including the M.U.L.E., will now come with a new tool roll as well.

Updated Reservoirs

For the 2017 line CamelBak have looked to improve all of their reservoirs. Through feedback gathered from reviews and team athletes, CamelBak found the top priority for the update was to improve water flow through their entire reservoir collection.

Reservoir updates include an improved locking mechanism at the valve
Reservoir updates include an improved locking mechanism at the valve...
Updated detachable hose from the reservoir
...and a revised hose connection system.

In an effort to achieve this they have increased the diameter of the tube and connectors, as well as improving the angle of the bite valve. The result is more water per sip and ultimately more time riding and less drinking. The locking mechanism on the bite valve has also been updated, making it far simpler to use, as has the detachable connection for joining the tube to the reservoir. The cap has also been improved, making it easier to fill and handle when open.

CamelBak Quick Stow Flasks

Also new for 2017 are their Quick Stow Flasks. Available in insulated and uninsulated versions, these bottles combine CamelBak’s reservoir and bottle technologies.

Unlike many of the soft bottles currently on the market, the material used for these is a little thicker to help the bottle keep its shape, making it easier to hold on to. They include a bite valve that can be locked and spade-shaped design to aid with stashing them in jersey or bib pockets. The bottle lid is still hard—necessary for sealing and handling—but the rest of the design makes for an easy-to-stash bottle that will be more comfortable up against the small of riders' backs.

Would have liked to have seen a pic of the back panel. Hard to beat an osprey packs ventilation.

Oasprey packs ventilation? e.g. Zealot ? haha good one
  • 3 2
@smashmouth: Osprey ventilates better almost every other pack on the market. Only packs I've found to be better are the Deuters with the mesh suspended on a frame (aka AirComfort). However, Deuter's superior ventilation comes at a weight penalty. Osprey is the best ventilation and comfort I've found. Lifetime warranty is nice too.

@SpillWay: Camelbak's Lifetime Warranty is nice also. I sent in a 10+ year old Mule to get restiched and the sent me a whole new bag.
  • 3 0
@Sebastes: I always feel bad about doing that. But, then again, they chose to offer a Lifetime Warranty, so we can assume they accounted for that when setting the MSRP.
  • 2 2
@SpillWay: I have had - MULE NV 2014, 2016; EVOC Stage and Oasprey Zealot. Zealot the worse from vent perspective by far ..
  • 1 0
@SpillWay: The new Platypus Duthie packs have a similar mesh ventilation back panel. I have been riding with one in central california for a while now and it has been treating me really well.
  • 2 0
@Sebastes: Would be better if they restitched it. Too much throw away and replace it with a new one going on these days.
  • 1 0
@jrkoenig: I agree, but I was not about to turn down a updated new pack. It keeps their customers happy and results in positive comments.
  • 1 0
@Sebastes: Ya I get it and really can appreciate that they did it for a 10+ year old pack. I would not have turned it down either to be honest. Thanks for the response.

For people who are 6'6" those waist belts are more like a bra. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  • 10 0
Osprey offers some with much longer back lengths.
One size fits most? One size fails many.
  • 4 0
They are a bit on the short side. I can either tug it up tight and have everything riding high, waist strap doing the old 'protect, lift and separate' or I can loosen it off and be throttled by the chest strap.

 I prefer the manzear.

That dude's skin is so silky smooth

Hahahaha! I had to go back and look!

 Its aero.

 Maybe its Maybelline

@aharris: Maybe he's born with it. Maybe it Mannequin.

I still use my old Camelbak Hawg 1997 edition... Smile

Would love to see a picture of that vintage pack

Yes! In strava orange! ***turns around gets on spin bike whilst eating gluten free nutrition bar***

For another $50 you can get a hologram that lights up when you get a KOM?
  • 5 1
@R4Squares: prefer some type of batman light signal so everyone knows you hit KOM

I still rock a Mule from about 2002, you'd be shocked to know it's 100% original including the bladder, clean it up few times a year with some good disassembly and good wash and it's good to go.

I really hate the bright colors and lack of some tactical scheme though. My current one is Desert camo.
  • 4 3
So .. I buy one for $150.00 and replacement bladder cost almost as much as a the whole unit.... why I refuse to buy another one of their products.
Great napsack .... but not worth the kick in the nuts when it comes time to replace the bladder.
  • 6 0
My Camelbak is over a decade old and still going strong. Of course I've replaced the bladder along the way and am loving my Source hydration bladder. Cleaner taste and very reasonably priced.
  • 2 1
@WasatchEnduro: Yeah but the flow rate is horrible on the Source bladders compared to the CamelBak reservoir.
  • 18 0
Google much? An Antidote bladder can be had for under $30. For that matter, Camelback replaced two of my hard-to-open Omega bladders w/ Antidotes for free, and when I asked to buy two new caps for my Podium bottles on the same call (damaged through my own fault) they gave me those for free as well.
They've been doing right by me for over 25 years, and will continue to get my coin for as long as they keep it up.

Still using my Camelbak M.U.L.E from 2004. Zero issues, and looks the same as it did then. Quality stuff them Camelbaks!
  • 2 0
@littlejoker: good point, if I could change one thing it would be more flow.
  • 5 0
yeah where are you buying your bladders? i got mine at REI for $30, which last I checked is a tad lower than $150...
  • 1 0
 @lyophilization:

I got an older H.A.W.G. and every time I priced out replacement bladders they are like 80 bucks... Just gave up and said screw it.. Maybe it's time to break down and start buying crap from the internet instead of trying to support my LBS.
  • 1 0
@WasatchEnduro: This new reservoir delivers 20% more water per sip making it the highest flow rate of any reservoir on the market.
  • 1 0
Lifetime warranty...no need to buy a replacement.
  • 3 0
If your LBS is charging $80 for a bladder, then yes, you should look around. I'm still using the same 10 year old Mule bladder, still works and tastes great. Much better durability in my experiences than Source or Hydrapak.
  • 5 0
But I just bought a mule 2 weeks ago. Sadness
  • 2 0
it would be great from Camelbak the issue of a "trail builder" back pack... in case of need I'll be up for developing and testing it ahahahahahahah
  • 1 0
Anyone else have problems with these bladders with the big open mouth screw top lid leaking? I just bought one and it leaked before I even used it. Got a replacement and tested it and it leaks as well.
  • 1 0
I have a Camelbak Agent Pack Peat, bought in 2014, and the front pocket zipper has failed me. Now the rear pocket zipper is f*cked as well. Also the mouth piece is leaking. I really expected a better product.
  • 2 0
 Lifetime warranty. Send it in.
  • 1 0
@littlejoker: I didn't know... Thanks, I will send them an email now!
  • 4 1
I'm glad they didn't turn the Mule into a fanny pack.
  • 2 0
The M.U.L.E will always be reference for cycling, but, In my opinion, the new Skyline is the best.
  • 2 0
Love the stow flasks. Looks good for stashn'(pun) into my raceface bib to top off my bottle.
  • 2 0
Love my Mule. Second generation, solid black. Would love to try the new one....but it ain't broke.
  • 2 0
Can you still get the Mil-Spec camo models? I still have a Viper somewhere
  • 2 0
Camelbacks are durable fit well and last forever.
  • 8 9
Camelbak, I love your packs but could you please update the reservoir filling system. The spinning dial makes it nearly impossible to fill the bladder up all the way.
  • 26 0
you hold the "spinning dial" level and you can fill it to the brim with water and screw the cap on. its as easy as a water bottle to fill up completely
  • 1 0
i know what you mean man. when you hold the rim level, the bag bends and you lose a bit of extra space. you have to do some baby cradling maneuver to keep the rim level and the bag straight.
  • 1 0
@lyophilization: If you fill the reservoir above a sink, the sink itself already supports it so you can fill it fairly well. In fact some reservoirs which actually fill right at the top are impossible to keep vertical while filling because the sink is in the way. So yeah it depends on how and where you're filling it. But the alternative @sampolicky might have in mind won't be ideal for everyone either.
  • 1 0
@vinay: That is actually a great idea. Im going to try that
  • 1 0
 Mule?

Looks more like some disco crazed Amazon parrot.
  • 1 0
Damn, right after I ordered the Skyline..
  • 2 4
Great bit of kit!!! I've just bought a different brand as well..
Camelback, you've give me the hump!!????
  • 1 1
So when the four legged creature keeps running from you, you turn to your Camelback?
  • 1 4
Hydrapak destroys this bladder, and all the companies that use it seem to offer better pack tech....
  • 2 0
 Lol. Great joke.
  • 1 0
If you like things that taste like ass, then that's great tech!
