Can We Find a Full Bike’s Worth of Oil Slick Components? - Taipei Cycle Show 2019

With Sram's AXS leading the charge, 2019 looks set to be the year of the oil slick for mountain biking. The yellow-y, purple-y, green-y coating has been all the rage in BMX for a few years and the mountain bike industry seems to have decided that now is the time for mountain bikers to get on board too.

With manufacturers and consumer brands aplenty in Taipei, it's often a good indication of the trends that lie ahead. There were oil slick coated products along almost every aisle in Taipei from brands both big and small, recognisable and obscure. We decided to see how much of a bike we could find coated entirely in oil slick for what could truly be the most tasteless build of all time. We know that these parts don't really fit together but here's proof you can have too much of a good thing.

Frame

We're starting off strong with Hasa's titanium hardtail.

photo

Pedals

Xpedo's Trident pedal was unveiled at the Taipei show today. This is Xpedo's narrowest ever pedal at 10mm, shaving 1 mm off the Spry. The platform measures 114x109 and the pedal weighs 342 grams. The pedal normally retails for $119 but the discerning customer can pay an extra $30 for this 'unicorn' colour.

photo

Cranks

Shun Shing's ML-110NW-T8 takes care of crank duties

photo

Chainring

We're gong to take that boring black chain ring straight off and replace it with a Fourier's CR-DX009-CM

photo

Discs

Sticking with Fouriers, we have their BR-DSK001 handling stopping duties, proving that oil on your discs isn't a bad thing after all.

photo

Cassette

We headed to Recon for our cassettes. The best looking one was an 11 speed, aluminum 11-28T road cassette.

photo

But for mountain biking there was this 11 speed cassette, it's a bit blue for our build but will have to do.

photo

Stem

Future Product Design's stem will head up the bike.

photo

Forks

Now we get on to the harder stuff. For forks we were going to have to look outside the normal players and the best we could find were the High Cool: Cool RLC forks with pearlescent graphics. And yes, that is a Civet 32 it's hanging next to.

photo

Rims

Again, we had to rely on stickers for the rims and the best we could find were from Xpace.

photo

Finishing touches

photo
Bolts galore from GA-E

photo
Last but not least, a bell.

Update

photo
Hubs from Rimnete

photo
A saddle from Velo

photo
And an 11 speed time trial chain from KMC.

So we're a fair way off a full bike in the end. We thought bars would one of the easiest things to find but we didn't see a trace, we'll update this article if we do find them in the next couple of days though.

Can we get a PB article where you actually build a bike from this AliX stuff and see how good/bad it is - just for giggles?

I mean, the whole bike would probably be sub $500 and free shipping
  • 84 0
Make it happen, PB! Please be sure to create an AliExpress Fantasy league, where we can draft components that we think will last the longest.
  • 11 0
 And deliverd end of summer
  • 9 1
@kanasasa: That's ok. Just report it as lost in shipping. They'll send another one that will arrive in a week. Followed shortly by the original order.
  • 9 2
@nouseforaname yes, this has to be tested back to back with a bike built up with all the top end fail products, like Enve rims & stem, sram/raceface carbon cranks, nukeproof horizon hubs, crankbros pedals etc etc and see which bike keeps rolling the longest/which rider dies first.
  • 2 0
Ont he other hand, I would watch it in full colour shining Smile

"High Cool" and "Civet 32" forks. F you China you lazy thieving bastards! Come up with your own designs. Wow...I am sure Rockshox and Fox are thrilled about this. Big Grin
  • 66 1
As a note, the Civet is a small animal that looks like a cross between a mongoose and a fox. #china

Waiting for the reviews on both, head to head! Slap them on an Unno while you're at it!
  • 23 0
@bman33: Famous for the coffee beans plucked out of it's shit. As a result I would've thought they'd go for Marzocchi type expresso stantions
  • 3 1
 @metaam: Big Grin
  • 15 2
I'd like to add that I mistook the xpace wheels for enve. Well the quality probably won't differ a lot.
  • 36 0
I had a Chinese colleague who said it's not only culturally acceptable to copy and steal but it's actually considered clever to do so. He left our company a few years ago and in the process stole IP content and repurposed it at the new company -- entirely proving his point.
  • 20 2
@colincolin: how dare you compare them to Enve wheels, I’m sure the premium product will last at least twice as long as those overpriced carbon Enve rims
  • 6 0
@bman33: That civet 32 will look good on my Raucous Montagne frame.
  • 20 13
I find the notion of idea ownership at the point of a gun to be overrated. If given the choice between our current IP laws and China's I prefer China's. The way we've structured patents and copyrights has lead to slower technological advancement and a more disparate distribution of wealth. Some protection could be useful for rewarding innovation and thus triggering more innovation, but our current laws aren't resulting in that. We need to meet China somewhere in the middle. They need to copy less and we need to allow more copying.
  • 2 2
@Spark24: They may be shockingly good....
  • 6 1
 @colincolin:

or will it? China-direct carbon rims hold up way better than Enve.
  • 10 2
@dfiler: I completely agree. As a Design Engineer, I do my my designs because I want to create stuff that works. All patent law achieves is the hoarding of design rights. It slows technological progress, makes stuff more expensive and society poorer.
  • 11 1
@hitmansam @dfiler: You've got a good point. You'll get downvoted by the not so bright's, but patent law is what allows big Pharma to make a killing on drugs, and yet people think mostly about their toys. It would drive down prices so hard though, so it'd also kill a business model. But as we should always ask, which has a greater impact on the general economic outlook? I think everyone dying from no knock off insulin is worse, and probably more expensive as well.
  • 6 1
@kmg0: We go to work, we hopefully create an product or service of value to society and then, ultimately, someone we've likely never met and did none of the work, keeps the profit.
Patent law is just an extension of that.
  • 3 0
@dfiler: I agree with you when it comes to technology, not names and logos; those have nothing to do with engineering or function of the fork. Their only purpose is to resemble a more expensive product with a better reputation.
  • 2 0
@Extremmist: That's trademark, not patent law. Trademark stuff is pretty normal, and I don't know of any huge issues with it.
  • 3 0
@dfiler: have you ever spent thousands of hours in a garage innovating a product? I don’t like the way our system works but the problem with open theft is that it takes that hard work a small company does and allows a huge corporation to use that to make tons of money off someone else’s invention and undercut the price of the original possibly putting said innovator out of business and if not putting them off from doing the hard work again.
  • 2 0
I'm pretty sure those High Cool forks have a straight steerer tube??
  • 2 1
@kmg0: patent law actually drives drug prices up, since they aren't discovering new drugs at they can keep profits up with fast enough, they jack up the prices of drugs to try to maintain the same level of profits.
  • 1 1
@clink83: I can't read your post really, but they just raise prices for profits, end of story.
  • 2 0
@0gravity: Not every Chinese thinks it's clever to steal others ideas. Young generations hate that.
  • 2 0
you will never know how much a Chinese will be shame about these junks. But what can we do?There will always be some brand thieves in over 1.4 billon people.
  • 2 0
@milanboy1986: it's said that林子大了什么鸟都有.But think about the benefits. We still have s-parts bolts and rims cheaper and better than enve.
  • 1 0
@JuliusZhuang: Currently using LightBicycles rims, they work great. Really hope westerners can get deeper and more comprehensive understanding of China and people here.
  • 1 0
@milanboy1986: but the fact is if you search for 'air-sprung fork' in taobao you will find more junks than this and that's why the misunderstood begins
  • 1 0
@JuliusZhuang: Sigh. Still a long way to go.

careful now...your homophobia is peeking thru. Razz
  • 24 7
@loopie: How did you make any connection to anything homophobic or anything that references LGBQ at all. The only thing worse than homophobes is people that assign homophobic beliefs in others with no evidence then try to attack them for their own preconceived ignorance.

"build it or f*ck you"...look Man..if you were joking, I was just trying to go with it. If you were serious...you're just an a*shole, but hey, plenty of those in the world...Own your lot.
  • 11 1
@loopie: The negative reaction is specifically towards you assigning bigoted and/or homophobic intentions to my comment. It was meant to be ironically aggressive but i never intended it to be outright offensive to anyone directly and i still don't think it is. Im not upset but when people start putting words in my mouth I feel the need to clarify my self. Everyone loves a joke but when it comes at the expense of accusing someone of being bigoted and/or homophobic you are going to find yourself fighting a uphill battle every time.
  • 24 1
 I thought Canadians were nice.
  • 6 1
@theredbike: i'm pretty sure that homophobia is *a lot* worse than false accusations of homophobia. though i agree that it sucks to be falsely accused of anything and you weren't being homophobic at all.

Geeeezuz Keerighst. When ya'll are done with your Mini-wheats...I'm hosting a sit-in at the library on Saturday. They have offensive words in them there books....and they are soooo ready to be taken out of context and over inflated for justice. Can't we all just have some justice!!!!!!
  • 2 2
lol. when the herd is offended it always assumes it’s right. we all know what eventually happens to herds.

The civet name is crazy. Not only are they blatantly cloning a product but they're making a damn pun with the name. (A civet is kind of an asian fox).
  • 13 0

I feel like those rotors wouldn't stay oil-slick-y for very long; maybe about as long as it takes to bed in new pads.

@Boardlife69: Any recommendations? I hear avocado oil has a high smoke point and is a nice neutral oil, I guess that means good modulation? Sesame oil might smell nice. though. It's so hard to know what the right move is these days, too many good options.

mtb world slacking. you can already do a basically 95% oil slick bike in bmx. rims bars forks frame cranks hubs stems gyros brakes sprockets pedals. not sure about levers and obviously no oil slick grips. not sure if oil slick nipples exist but spokes rims and hubs do. no barrel adjusters.
