With Sram's AXS leading the charge, 2019 looks set to be the year of the oil slick for mountain biking. The yellow-y, purple-y, green-y coating has been all the rage in BMX for a few years and the mountain bike industry seems to have decided that now is the time for mountain bikers to get on board too.
With manufacturers and consumer brands aplenty in Taipei, it's often a good indication of the trends that lie ahead. There were oil slick coated products along almost every aisle in Taipei from brands both big and small, recognisable and obscure. We decided to see how much of a bike we could find coated entirely in oil slick for what could truly be the most tasteless build of all time. We know that these parts don't really fit together but here's proof you can have too much of a good thing.
FrameWe're starting off strong with Hasa's titanium hardtail.
PedalsXpedo's Trident pedal was unveiled at the Taipei show today. This is Xpedo's narrowest ever pedal at 10mm, shaving 1 mm off the Spry. The platform measures 114x109 and the pedal weighs 342 grams. The pedal normally retails for $119 but the discerning customer can pay an extra $30 for this 'unicorn' colour.
CranksShun Shing's ML-110NW-T8 takes care of crank duties
ChainringWe're gong to take that boring black chain ring straight off and replace it with a Fourier's CR-DX009-CM
DiscsSticking with Fouriers, we have their BR-DSK001 handling stopping duties, proving that oil on your discs isn't a bad thing after all.
CassetteWe headed to Recon for our cassettes. The best looking one was an 11 speed, aluminum 11-28T road cassette.
But for mountain biking there was this 11 speed cassette, it's a bit blue for our build but will have to do.
StemFuture Product Design's stem will head up the bike.
ForksNow we get on to the harder stuff. For forks we were going to have to look outside the normal players and the best we could find were the High Cool: Cool RLC forks with pearlescent graphics. And yes, that is a Civet 32 it's hanging next to.
RimsAgain, we had to rely on stickers for the rims and the best we could find were from Xpace.
Finishing touchesUpdateSo we're a fair way off a full bike in the end. We thought bars would one of the easiest things to find but we didn't see a trace, we'll update this article if we do find them in the next couple of days though.
Yours faithfully Robert
I mean, the whole bike would probably be sub $500 and free shipping
or will it? China-direct carbon rims hold up way better than Enve.
Patent law is just an extension of that.
"I'm your Huckleberry"...make me your next cause to get all butt hurt over.
"Hey cool...nice fork. 'Civet'?? Never heard of'em"
"It's an asian fox"
"Huh?"
*snicker snicker
Wait wat!?
I know where my money is going.....
(the Civet of course)
oilslick it, and tell peeps it's titanium.
