Let's all the a moment to honor the fact that Wyn Masters stopped at hecklers rock for a beer.

 Haha. Bloody legend

So boggled... Watched the whole live coverage and didn't see any of the top section for any of the riders men or women... No Heckler's Rock, did I miss something? Coverage I watched was majorly lacking for what used to be considered the biggest DH race of the season in North America... WTF?
  • 11 1
@JLB: They had cameras either side of the track on the jumps and a chopper showing long distance aerial shots early on, but nothing in the woods,Genius. And who thought anyone would want to listen to those 2 twats spouting shit for 2 hours. BTW Tristan it's sapped momentum, not zapped FFS.
  • 10 0
@metaam: Those aerial shots sucked balls. The money spent on that chopper and AV gas could have put five different angles in the woods. Let's step it up next year guys, this race is legit and needs to be properly represented. How about when Blenkinsop got to the bottom of his run and they listed him as a US rider? Slipping...
  • 2 0
@JLB: Freeride Entertainment was up there with a Cineflex today, but it definitely wasn't for the live coverage!

lets all stop and think for a moment what would happen to the bike park and the festival if wyn had drank that beer during this uci race and then crashed into someone or even hurt himself. i'm sure the insurance company would just love this wyn is a retard. never had, nor will i ever have respect for this muppet. hes a victim of the industry.

@stacykohut: Your comment is hilarious. Its Crankworx, not a world cup. Are you an old age pensioner? Anything else that rustles your jimmies that you want to get off your chest?

@stacykohut: you must be allot of fun to hang out. How much paper work is involved?
  • 14 4
Why can't we just live in a world where instead of assuming the worst, and always worrying about the what ifs, people just let others do stuff and have fun. You sound like my local horse back riders that constantly ruin our trails because, "Oh what if a mountain biker bleh bleh blah blah waaaah you're doing something I don't do and I don't like it!"

Yea, you're right. Some shit could have happened. But it didn't, and people had fun. So why not focus on that a little?

thats why.

  • 7 5
@stacykohut: i kind of agree with you here mate. On one hand our sport is all about havin a good time on your bike BUT if we want more world cup races etc etc, and more "out of industry" sponsors then professionalism is the name of the game. From attracting Big time resorts around the world into getting keen on hosting events, to traditional sport sponsors seeing our sport as a viable venture can only be good. Its a common discussion on here about not enough races and/or money and therefore opportunities and one could argue that "race day antics" might not be the best option. Were constantly hearing of sponsors ditching athletes in other sports for infractions.
......its a tough one to call though as this IS dh but as we constantly see Wyn standing out in " controversial" circumstances.
  • 8 5
@stacykohut: No, actually. It's not complicated. Because I think the best of people, and just assume everything is going to work out. ESPECIALLY at a mountain bike festival, at Whistler (the happiest place on earth.) Wyn could have had 20 f*cking beers, a hooker, and some blow and I still would have just assumed he would have made it down the mountain.

  • 14 2
@stacykohut: yes... not sure how that is relevant to Wyn... he had a slow leak in a tire which is super shitty... so he made the best of it with a bit of fun. You don't like him that's all that makes sense to me.

@freeriderob: (kook handle by the way)........ i certainly have no respect for someone who encourages or defends beer drinking in the middle of a run by a paid international athlete, or defends the actions of some fools throwing beer cans on hecklers rock in the middle of a uci sanctioned downhill race.

you think that type of shizz is gonna help whistler get a wc dh in the future?

uci commissioners would have not been too stoked today.

 @Muckal: talent, hardwork and attitude.

you got one of my three strengths correct.
  • 4 1
@stacykohut: your last point to @freeriderob was very well said and is my point exactly. Any athlete that competes in a sport at the top level has a certain "duty of care" so to speak. If dh is to become a more high profile sport and therefore receive the funding and interest from investors to put on more events then in some respects it needs to clean up its act a bit. The fitness and commitment shown by the top guys and girls is not reflected by drinking ( or pretending ) a beer midway through competition. Nor is the sports level of professionalism reflected by so called "fans" throwing beer cans/objects at competitors to the point of someone needing medical attention! Maybe a bit of growing up is needed. Believe me as nearly 15 years as a (struggling ) professional track sprint cyclist the uci doesn't work that way.
  • 11 1
@slowrider73: i really hope DH is never going to be a high profile sport which is about nothing but money. Not even talking about the olympics.

@Muckal: but muckal, it is already all about money.

win on sunday, sell on monday.

racing is just one big commercial.
its the ultimate reality show with the ultimate product placements.

props. lol.

you can't buy 144 dt swiss spokes with props.

lol.
  • 1 0
@Muckal: depends which side of the fence you sit on. DH is special in that most people who do it dont compete and in many respects its looked on as an (i hate the term) "extreme " sport. For the smaller percentage that do race money being injected into competition from sponsors to provide more facilities/races can only be a good thing. In some respects in a very unfortunate way mtb in general is already very muchh about the money. The big companies are just that, huge businesses that are most definitely "all about the money". Merida produces over 4 million bikes a year. Do the math!
  • 9 12
@stacykohut: YOU ARE A SCUMBAG TROLL!
  • 5 4
Bunch of f*cking idiots, I don't care about your negative props, these are the kind of people that won't help out a fellow human in need if their lives depended on it. You people actually agree with throwing objects at other people and putting them in the hospital and this is good fun to you?

  • 8 4
 @joecantello: riiight.

voicing my opinion about disgusting behaviour that puts many people in harms way during a uci sanction dh race, a sport i love and bleed btw, makes me a troll?

just wait till next year and your beloved hecklers rock and those drunk morons will be gone.

and there will be no reason for an assclown like wyn to encourage that type of behaviour.

how's wyn race season going this year? lots of strong performances?

i like how voicing your opinion has no been turned into trolling by your generation.

your generation sure has some wacked out ways of looking at the truth.
  • 6 9
@weebleswobbles: its probably not their fault.

bad parenting, no strong male role models in their life, the video game generation who think everything has a reset button or cheat codes/injury and death have no consequences, brain washed by below average entertainment and commercials, and the good old sheep/follow the herd menatlity.

its really not their fault.... they really are the lost generation.
  • 8 1
I don't see how what Wyn did is that bad, he had a flat, had no chance at placing good anyways, so he stopped for a beer and made the fans happy, and (almost) everyone had a good laugh about it.

Now the hecklers at hecklers rock throwing shit at people on the lifts is definitely a problem, and I want to see what is done to stop that for next year, hopefully hecklers rock can live on but fans just need to learn to not be idiots.
  • 5 2
@Gvus2001: dude, hecklers rock is done.

i believe the uci rulebook may have something about consuming alcohol during your race run as a 'bad thing'.

@Gvus2001: the way i see it is this

Dickheads at hecklers rock throwing stuff and putting a rider in the med tent as a result. Wyn stops to have a beer with very same hecklers. See the connection?
  • 6 0
@slowrider73: True, but Wyn most likely had no clue what the hecklers were doing with throwing stuff and all that, but I wasn't there so what do I know. I doubt he was supporting what the hecklers were doing.
  • 20 0
@stacykohut: bruh, you think posting my age and where I live strengthens you're argument? I watched someone 2 years ago do the same thing and the rock is still going, watched a guy climb up the lift tower even, hasn't stopped it, I honestly doubt it'll change. But Listen man, I get it wasn't the most professional thing to do, but to come out the gate calling people "retard" and "idiot", make a reference to yourself smoking weed and then preach about professionalism puts a pretty big hole in your argument because you can't even voice your opinion without being incredibly disrespectful to others. Also contradicting your self by saying stuff like he's a "victim to the industry" yet he goes against it by cracking a brew mid race? I guess this 19 year old from richmond has a better grip on the situation than you thought, eh?

  • 19 2
If anyone was wondering why the race was stopped, it's due to 'spectators' on hecklers rock attacking riders on the lift. Literally throwing heavy objects at them - one of my friends is currently in hospital having his head sewn back together due to some fuckwhit throwing stuff at them.
  • 16 2
Why does everything awesome have to be ruined by jackasses? Vail is not going to take a chance on that happening next year. Good-bye heckler's rock.

I'm thinking the same thing. This is probably the last year of Heckler's Rock as we know it. It's no longer just the playful, drunken verbal heckling of the past. Today, there were countless all-out beer can assaults on people coming up on the Fitzsimmons Chair, especially if you had rental bikes loaded on the lift.

www.pinkbike.com/video/453547

A couple of RCMP officers showed up—and were subsequently heckled, lol—but the police presence was definitely a first. Okay, the whole thing was pretty damn funny, but I can't see Whistler Blackcomb allowing the Rock to go on like this.

@stacykohut: find it funny you got down voted. Currently in Whistler and saw the ad for the first time...you have to be a f*cking moron to think an ad like that would fly. Certainly not in the states, that's for sure

@SeaJay: pink bike is a tough crowd man.
hero one minute, zero the next.

many different demographics on here thats for sure.........

the upvote/down vote never carried much merit with me anywho.....

as long as people get to express themselves in a forum without being censored, i think is thats the most important part of these fourms. i always throw my opinion out there on topics i feel passionate about, and however its received is how its received.....

but yeah, that 'sleep later' video was definiately going for the low hanging fruit. the riding was rad, but the other stuff was so '16 year old'.

  • 3 0
Yup! Could have been any bike park anywhere, all they filmed was flat wide dirt; boring as hell and a complete waste of time. Coverage just for the fanboys to do their wankin.
  • 1 0
@dtsabas @SteveDekker: Weird as I watched the race from the lower woods and there was one big full TV camera near the spaghetti chute, and I saw at least two GoPros on trees all hooked up on the fibre optics. I just assumed that was all pushing to the stream. Shame.
  • 12 2
I can almost guarantee the people throwing debris onto the course at Hecklers rock were not mountain bikers. I know a lot of people who were up there today who can hardly give a shit about the sport, they just wanted to get hammered in a big crowd.

The local bikers I recognized in the crowd were the ones clearing the course from cans. The people I saw throwing shit I had never seen before and it looked like this was their first time on the mountain.

The can throwing may have got slightly out of hand towards the end but the trash was quickly picked up and it didn't interfere with the riders. I really hope Hecklers rock won't be banned because it is one hell of a fun time but the can throwing definitely has to simmer down a bit.

Also, Wyn is a legend for doing what he did. Easily the best moment on the rock today. Anyone who thinks that it was inappropriate needs to take the stick out of their ass and relax. It's not like he was racing Garbo DH with vodka in his camelbak, he left the race and enjoyed a beverage, Chill the f*ck out! (@staceykohut)

Heckler's Rock has been featured less & less every year. Was it last year they put that fence up to keep a safe distance between fans & riders? I think the year before that a spectator fell off the rock & down the hill. I watched the coverage today & didn't hear Tristan or Brad J. mention the rock once. I think they have been told to not speak of it or encourage it. This subject walks a fine line between having fun & running a sanctioned race. Many ways to look at this & many opinions. I personally like Wyn. He's funny. I enjoy his track walks & wrap-ups at the UCI races. I think the organizers/ stakeholders will have to have a serious look at Heckler's Rock & decide it's future or a least come up with some rules. Yes, the coverage could have been better, but I wonder how much money there is to spend on improving it.
