Canyon Launches the Collective with the Seagraves, Wibmer, Brosnan, Thoma & More

Jan 17, 2020
by James Smurthwaite

Canyon has today confirmed it will be sponsoring the Seagraves and launches the Collective, bringing all its elite gravity athletes under one banner.

The two Canyon teams will remain separate entities with Canyon Factory Racing becoming Canyon Collective and FMD Transition/MucOff becoming Canyon Collective FMD. The two teams will operate out of separate pits but will apparently be working closely together throughout the season.

The team will be joined in the Collective by Canyon's enduro, trail, and slopestyle athletes as well as YouTuber Fabio Wibmer. It is not yet clear how all the athletes will interact as part of the team.

Press Release: Canyon

Whatever we do, whatever makes us tick, one thing’s always true: it’s better to do it with people who share our passion. Seeking community, likeminded people, friends – it’s part of what makes us human. We’re all looking for our own collective. With the launch of [ C L L C T V ], Canyon is uniting mountain bikers from around the world under a single banner: irrespective of whether you ride trail, bikepark, freeride, slopestyle, or dirt. No matter what language you speak, how old you are, how long you’ve been riding: everyone’s welcome in the Canyon Collective.

The [ C L L C T V ] is not just an exclusive club reserved for the pros – but that doesn’t mean that some of the world’s top stars aren’t already all-in. Troy Brosnan and Tahnée Seagrave are two of the hottest names in the downhill scene, and Ines Thoma is one of the finest riders in the world of enduro. Or if you get your kicks clocking up huge airtime and nailing insane tricks, then names like Thomas Genon, Tomas Lemoine and Fabio Wibmer aren’t bad company to be keeping. In the Collective, all riders are equal – from World Cup-level pros to YouTube stars to weekend trail warriors. Because we all share that same passion for riding: regardless of what we do, and regardless of how we do it.

So, what drives the Collective? The commitment to inspire and connect mountain bikers from around the planet. At World Cup races, at test events, at parties, online and offline, in digital and on the dirt. All year-round, in every country, at every opportunity.

And because every community needs a backbone, these Canyon pro riders are already on board:

Braydon Bringhurst (Trail) | Dimitri Tordo (Enduro) | Fabien Barel (Mentor) | Fabio Wibmer (YouTube) | Ines Thoma (Enduro) | Kaos Seagrave (Downhill) | Kye A‘Hern (Downhill) | Mark Wallace (Downhill) | Owen Marks (Slopestyle) | Tahnée Seagrave (Downhill) | Thomas Genon (Slopestyle) | Tomas Lemoine (Slopestyle) | Troy Brosnan (Downhill)

  • 2 0
I've got to admit I haven't properly listened to any more recent Cannibal Corpse material. Just found Cannibal Corpse, Frantic Disembowelment on youtube. It is nice but even from the limited number of tunes I know it seems like in part it is a combination of earlier work. There is this ascending piece that seems taken straight from their instrumental Relentless Beating. By all means a pretty tune though. I felt the same about the more recent material of Bolt Thrower and they don't even come close to half the intensity of CC. Any news on guitar player Pat you know of? I think it was quite unfortunate he happened to attack a police officer with a knife just after breaking into another house just as his own home stocked with ammo blew up. Of course it was super nice of Erik Rutan to handle guitar duties while he was in jail but it is best if he himself is free and out there to do his thing.

@Rokthewok: I hope so. Ever since I hit my 40's I've started quoting my mother. Sitting in meetings and holding back my urge to tell my 20-something co-workers "only stupid people are bored" and when they get antsy for lunch "you could live two months on what's around your waist" will probably eventually require me to have a conversation with my boss... But since he's only a couple years older, I'll just tell him "people in hell want ice water" or "wait till your father gets home" and he'll back off.

  • 3 2
 just ridiculous!
  • 12 13
Sounds easy but you will have more tought competitors than into a WC...
  • 26 2
YouTube seems silly but its a big deal these days and YouTuber's can get paid extremely well. I would argue bike brands can get more recognition off of a viral video or even a weekly or bi weekly channel that gets 50K views per week than people watching a WC or EWS event a few times a year. I think it's a smart strategic move to employ a YouTuber like Fabio who has almost 4 million followers over an EWS racer. Even the best EWS racers probably aren't selling as many bikes as Fabio will. Kids (and adults too) these days love youtube - its a huge platform for all sports especially action sports that don't have ESPN or a mainstream media platform for sharing their sports like football or baseball etc.
  • 11 0
@andyelliott3: except the term 'youtuber' is fckin embarrassing.
  • 1 0
@andyelliott3: @andyelliott3: Agreed, however even on YouTube you need a reason to make a video, and WC racing can be a great subject. take Redbull race recaps or any of the factory team videos for example.
  • 5 2
 Tell that to Phil Kmetz!
  • 7 0
@JamesGTi: at least using the term 'youtuber' is admitting what they are. A lot of people seem to be trying to peddle the term content creator these days, which literally describes millions of jobs.
  • 7 1
the term "youtuber" sounds dumb, is a dowhiller a RebBullTVer. It describes a platform (that might change in the future) instead of what he is really doing.. Fabio is a freerider. what he does is really similar to what Wade Simmons& co was doing with New World Disorder. My Grandparents would call him a stuntman!!
  • 3 0
To clarify, I am in no way discounting the benefit or value of an athlete with a large youtube following or presence. I just find categorizing their discipline as 'YouTube' hilarious.
  • 4 5
@andyelliott3: 4 million followers, approximately six of them in the market for a $5000+ mountain bike ...

marketing is not about "max eyeballs!!!!", it's about targeting the right segment. That's why RB pushing out lots of content might make sense; their market is "everyone who wants to look like an extreme athlete and is willing to invest 4 bucks and drink tiger piss". This is not the same addressable market that Canyon should be targeting.

but hey, if it helps Fabio put out more crazy content that I get for free, I'm not complaining!
  • 2 2
 Video killed the radio star.
Youtube killed the "professional" MTBer.
  • 1 0
@ClarkHoward: I don't think it killed the professional MTB'er, it just redefined one.
  • 2 5
@stevemokan: No not at all. Athletes are not "professional" until you compete at a "professional level" against other "professionals". Until that happens, well your just a "ambassador" or in his state a "youbassador" lol
  • 2 0
@plyawn: pretty sure those vids get posted on PB and every other major mtb media outlet out there - adds up to alot more than six people looking at a new bike, though I'm probably looking harder at a sub 3k spectral Smile Anyway, give Fabio whatever title you want, when trail time is over and screen time begins, he's a fun one to watch.
  • 2 0
@ClarkHoward: The literal definition of a professional is"a member of a profession or any person who earns their living from a specified professional activity."

Unless you are top 10 in a competitive discipline there is probably more money to be made through youtube than competing.
  • 1 0
 @friendlyfoe: Professional youtuber marketer then..
  • 1 0
@plyawn: There might be six of those followers able to pay that for a mountain bike, but there are loads of kids with wealthy parents. Here in Innsbruck you see quite many kids riding around on way too big stumpjumpers, because Fabio did - with proper sizing. So they will definteley reach out to customers through him, wheter it's directly or via the parent's purse.

@lacuna: there is more than followers and clicks. It is so sad to see good athletes not getting a sponsor because all of the budgets is wasted for some Instaclowns. Not talking about the top level guys like Fabio, they know how to ride a bike, but there's so much influencers out there who get bikes and money for showing some skin and pretending to be a mountainbiker. How would development work without the input of some pro racers? Maybe we would get bike geometries which are mass compatible but that's another thing.
