HIGHER LEARNING: MOUNTAIN BIKE OPERATIONS PROGRAM

bigquotesThe MBO program had a huge impact on what I am doing now. The skills and networking that I was provided while a student at Cap U were instrumental in getting me to where I am now.
-Daniel Scott, Project Manager & Designer, Alpine Bike Parks

Capilano University - Mountain Bike Operations Program

Working in the mountain bike industry has never come with a handbook. In fact our industry is still so fresh that people who simply have initiative and imagination have developed most of the systems and processes currently in place. Until recently, working in this industry meant creating a role for yourself and finding a way for your unique set of skills to allow you to ‘live the dream.’ But as we’ve grown, developed and become more accessible to the general population, the opportunities for employment have grown as well. This has created a new opportunity to standardize qualifications for positions working in roles such as coaching, guiding and trail building. Capilano University, embracing the location of their Sunshine Coast campus, has created the first, and currently only, Mountain Bike Operations Certificate program of its kind internationally.

bigquotesThe mountain bike industry has a lot to do with who you know or who knows you. It's a small industry and getting to meet some of the industry professionals through the program first hand is a great advantage.
-Logan Peat, Professional Athlete

The materials for the program were created with the input of mountain bike industry professionals including Jay Hoots, Daniel Scott, Darren Butler, and Kelli Sherbinin. A main focus of the program is on sustainable park and trails design and building, however it also covers the tourism industry, risk management, event management, marketing, guiding and leadership skills, wilderness first aid, environmental stewardship, and communications.

bigquotesThe teachers and instructors of the MBO program are experienced in their fields, so by learning from them, it was like you were gaining experience just the same as you would in any job in the industry. Unlike having to 'work your way up' in a job however, the school provided you with challenges and opportunities in a more forgiving environment. You could learn from your mistakes without the repercussions of a real job.
-Sebastian Johnson, Mountain Bike Instructor

Kelli and Darren teach the Mountain Bike Instruction (Level 1 & 2) and Guiding for Single Day Trips portion of the program. Drawing on her thirteen years of instructing, Kelli started with the MBO program in 2007. It was in its second year and she was asked to re-write the existing curriculum based on Endless Biking’s newly created Mountain Bike Instructor Training certification. “We have created the curriculum from the ground up and have been able to increase the course from a 3 credits to 4.5 over the last 8 years.” The changes in their portion of the curriculum have allowed for more time to teach each component; instructing and guiding, thoroughly, creating more employable students. In the beginning the program only covered Level 1 instructor training, now it covers Level 2 as well, which meets the requirements for businesses like Whistler Bike Park. “Not all of the students in the program want to become an instructor and/or guide, but having the skills, experience and certification is valuable for their professional development, as well as to have on their resume and will give them options as it is an added value to a potential employer,” says Kelli. “That aside, some of the students are absolutely in the program to get work in this field. When the students successfully complete our section they will be able to teach and/or guide youth and adult riders in a controlled environment or on trail or in a bike park.” In addition to focusing on the course material related to developing itineraries and risk management strategies, Kelli and Darren also help students to improve their own riding in order to expand their abilities.

bigquotesI tell everyone what a great experience I had and to be prepared to go to school and appreciate that our sport has a certified program to give them jobs in the industry. Be prepared for classroom work, studying and tests - it's still school, but the only school where you spend a lot of time on your bike and in the trails.
-Kyle Norbraten, Professional Athlete

The course materials are reviewed annually and are continually adjusted based on feedback from the students and industry. “We also leave the students some room to figure a few things out on their own, to allow them to have ownership of their ideas, projects and exercises.” A key component to the relevance of the materials is that the instructors are also leading industry experts who continue to work in their field, outside of the program, on a daily basis.

bigquotesComing out of high school I was not sure of what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to ride my bike but making that a career wasn't going to happen. I didn't even know where to begin to crack into the mountain bike industry. Growing up in a small town the only 'mountain bike industry' presence around was the bike shops. I have never been mechanically inclined so being a mechanic was not a great option for me. I found that the MBO program was an open door inside the industry and allowed me to see all the other facets of it that I did not realize existed.
-Jordan Drinovz, Program Coordinator at Endless Biking

“I find a program like this sets a foundation of what the industry is expecting from our students and helps them to understand the industry as a whole,” explains Darren. “They get to gain perspective on how they can make their talents and passion apply to an area that they may not have even realized existed.”
“For those people in the industry who are familiar with our teaching style, they know we push the students towards a very high standard,” says Darren about how the industry views graduates of the program. “We don’t give away grades and certifications, you earn them and the industry knows this and can count on it.” Students graduating from the program have found work in building trails and bike parks internationally, sales jobs, management positions, instructing and guiding work, as risk managers, as well as, some have their own businesses. “We have hired some of the students at our company, Endless Biking. In fact Jordan Drinovz is still with us, he took Kelli’s very first class in 2007.”

bigquotesThe Instructing and Guiding component of the program was my personal favourite, I appreciated the fast pace of Darren and Kelli's teaching and of course the time spent on the bike while in 'school.'
-Rueben Salzgeber, Sales Representative for Procycle and Raceface Performance Products

So what advice do they have for prospective students? “I would make sure that the candidate is aware that the program, while focused on mountain biking, is still a University program and that there will be book based learning along with the hands on bike related parts,” offers Darren. “I would also tell them that the program is what you make of it, almost every student who was determined and applied themselves got a job in the mountain biking industry after graduation.”

There are still spots available for the 2015/2016 school year. Visit Capilano University for more information.

bigquotesBecause of the grade I acquired in the trail building portion of the program, I was given the opportunity to work for the Federal Government of Canada while instructing army cadets. My overall certification upon completion of the program made me a better candidate for acquiring a guiding/instructing job for the Whistler Bike Park.
-Kelsey Begg, Mountain Bike Instructor

bigquotes[The program taught me] to be passionate, and care about every aspect of what you do and take pride in it. And to be stoked all the time, because if you manage to make it work and make enough money to survive, then you should be real happy!

CAPILANO UNIVERSITY MOUNTAIN BIKE OPERATIONS ALUMNI

LOGAN PEAT
I am riding at a full time professional level in the FMB World Tour. I travel all over the world competing and filming.

DANIEL SCOTT
I ended up being hired right before graduating by Mark Schmidt, the then lead instructor for the trail design/construction course, to run the Trails Solutions Program for IMBA Canada. I was then hired by Capilano University four months later to be the field instructor for the trail design/construction course of the MBO program. I still teach with Jay Hoots at Cap U and look forward to it every year! I left IMBA Canada after 5 years to work for Alpine Bike Parks Canada based out of Whistler, BC where I am currently the Professional Services Manager. We design and construction bike parks and trail projects all over North America and abroad.

RUEBEN SALZGEBER
I am the Sales Representative for Procycle and Raceface Performance Products in eastern BC and the prairie provinces.

SEBASTIAN JOHNSON
I have been working full time at the Whistler Bike Park for the past 3 summers. I have also worked in the Yukon teaching backcountry mountain biking to young army cadets through Cabin Fever Adventures.

KELSEY BEGG
Since completing the MBO Program, I have spent the last three summer seasons coaching and instructing for the Whistler Bike Park. I also spent a month instructing army cadets in the Yukon where I was hired by the Federal Government of Canada and contracted by a company called Cabin Fever Adventures.

KYLE NORBRATEN
The course brought me to the Sunshine Coast and in turn changed my life. I haven't directly used my education to get to where I am now, it was merely coming to the coast, meeting new best friends, getting dream-come-true opportunities in the mtb film industry, and working hard doing what I love with a dedicated group of friends. Sure a lot of things I learned come into play in my work and life and I ultimately thank the MBO program for putting me on the path to becoming a professional mountain biker because it brought me to the right place I needed to be in life at the right time.

CALLUM JELLY
These days I write, film and shoot photos for mountain bike companies, magazines, and websites worldwide. I also appear in photos on my bike from time to time. In the winter I turn my lens and pencil onto the ski world, and in the shoulder seasons the surf world.

JORDAN DRINOVZ
Right out of the program I started guiding for Endless Biking and I still am seven years later. Currently I am the program coordinator at EB. I look after setting up all our programs throughout the season making sure that the guides and clients have everything they need to create a great mountain bike experience. I still get out and guide and instruct in many of the programs, after all I got into the industry to ride my bike so it has been great to have a job that allows me to do that even as I progress up in the company. In the winter I seamlessly slide into my role as a Ski Patrol supervisor on Grouse Mountain Resorts.

This is just like one of those bs music or art tech schools.

Hardly. This programs gets you real training by industry experts, that prepare you for work in the industry.

Without it, where would you get all of these topics in training? You would have to go to many different schools and many different companies and spend even more $ to attain and likely have less industry experience and practicums.

As a student I can attest I learnt a ton and there is nothing else like it out there. Definitely one of the most useful courses you can do if you want to work in the MTB industry.

As another graduate I can defiantly say that this is not the case. Apart from the hands on courses ie. guiding/instructing and trail building you get a rounded year of tourism courses that are applicable in not just the cycling industry. After graduating I received offers from across Canada.

Deciding to attend was the best decision of my life. It rooted my schooling in an industry that I am passionate about, connected me with not only my classmates but also alumni and others within the industry. The connections an opportunities that I have earned from completing the program are truly unlimited.

I along with every graduate that I know fully support the program and recommend it to anyone who is looking at building a future in the cycling world.

Greatest experience of my young life, highly recommend to anyone from anywhere. If you dream of building bike parks and then teaching people in them, this is the course for you!

I took this program last year and it has fully changed my possibilities in the bike industry. Coming from a small town in northern BC, while digging in the woods, I always said "Imagine you could get paid for this?" Granted I'm still not getting paid to dig trails,(close though!!) I've been exposed to some very high level trails, trail builders and some of the best fellow students one could hope for. The connections I have made, and the paths open and available to me since i began this amazing program I would have never been able to achieve on my own. I fully endorse this program and recommend it to anyone hoping to live their dreams. Coast Gravity Park being just down the road is an added bonus!!

I'd love to enslist. Like next year I'm ready to drop my own department in government. It's time to live a little bit for myself and do suff that really matters for people around me. Not sure I can afford it though.

I can't see where I passed judgement on the whole course. I just pointed out a fundamental safety issue in one of the pictures. I find your reply pretty weird and defensive though. For a start 'able to afford the best gear'. It's a bar plug, as leaders you should be giving them out for free to potentially save the life of one of your students. As for 'or do they care to mind each and every detail. We can teach them where the water is and how to drink it but can't force them to drink it' I suppose that's true to some extent but if you're training future leaders then you HAVE to instill that attention to detail into your students. There's a reason why races have safety checks including compulsory bar plugs and there's a reason why good leaders carry a load of them at all times and distribute them to all students and clients. It's to save potentially lethal gouging injuries from open ended bars. Never questioned the program or the tutors but I do question your response.

I apologize if came across defensive @Rockandrideoutdoors I do believe in the program and I am passionate about it.

We spend a great deal of time caring for details in the course and the safety of the students.

You've brought up a great point that we'll include in the curriculum. Thank you.

Bike school is cool. Ride bikes!

No worries. Great to see the passion. Good luck with everything!

What is the tuition cost?? this needs to be addressed to see if future trail guides are going to be swallowed by debt

But otherwise I think this sounds like an amazing program

5200~ for Canadian students, more for international, don't know the exact number. Landed a bike park building as well as a separate guiding and instructing job straight out of school. I highly recommend this program.

i see that there have been some great, rewarding jobs earned by graduates, but no mention of money earned. i would imagine teaching at capilano would be ok but anyone else willing to throw out numbers. lifestyle wins over money any day but people need to pay mortgages and put their kids through school, so i would like to know if its a valid career choice. thanks to anyone willing to throw out the numbers.

...and this is how you pursue your dream job. Reminds me of the winter ski resort operations course at Selkirk college. Putting the fun back into school for sure.

Good stuff, although it scares me seeing a picture of a DH bike without bar plugs on an extended advert for a new biking syllabus.

 Stoke First, Safety Second!

An older picture of one of the students loading his bike is affecting your impression of the course?

Not every student is able to afford the best gear in the business or do they care to mind each and every detail. We can teach them where the water is and how to drink but can't force them to drink it. Please keep that in mind before you cast judgment on entire course.

It's a great program that is run by professionals.
