2 Days Left Before the Pinkbike Academy Application Deadline - Apply Now!

Apr 28, 2020
by Pinkbike Staff

We knew that producing Pinkbike Academy presented by Shimano was an ambitious project, but a global pandemic has made the logistics even more challenging. That said, we still believe this project can make a huge difference in the careers of up-and-coming riders, so we're forging ahead to make it happen this year—safety permitting. Timelines for filming have been pushed back from June, and because ensuring the health of everyone involved is a top priority we're staying flexible with our shoot-dates.

The deadline for applications is now Friday, May 1st.

We've also altered our expectations for submission videos and encourage everyone to get even more creative with their applications with all the extra time at home. We've uploaded a mock submission video above with Christina Chappetta to give you a better idea of what we're looking for if you're stuck inside. You don't need to head out to the trails to show us your skills. In fact, please follow all local health authority directives, and DO NOT take risks when filming your video submission.

We're happy for you to make a compilation of your best old clips from Instagram, re-edit an old video or make a slideshow. Or, wow us with your on-camera presenting skills in a touching monologue about why you're an ideal candidate for the show and leave the rest of your application to speak for your riding. Please remember that mountain biking irresponsibly during the COVID-19 pandemic puts you and others at risk and riding injuries put unnecessary stress on medical systems that need all available resources to fight the virus.

If you haven't heard about the Pinkbike Academy yet, here's the synopsis: we are choosing 10 riders, five men and five women, from around the world to travel to BC to battle it out against each other in a series of riding-related challenges. Riders will be eliminated through a series of challenges as the 10-part series progresses, and the winner will come away with a Pro Contract from Orbea as well as a $25,000 Grand Prize! More info here.

Full details on how to apply are below.

How to Apply

Step 1: Film a 1–5 minute video showcasing your riding and explaining why we should choose you. Show us what your day-to-day looks like, what your secret skills are, etc. Bonus points for creativity. The best videos will help you stand out as a unique candidate for the show.

Step 2: Complete the entry form here.

Applications must be received by Friday, May 1st

Can I send a film of me responsibly staying at home and not sending it?
  • 3 0
 Yes, quite the edit!
  • 13 2
Absolutely! In fact, we highly encourage it.

@sarahmoore: that'll make for prime b roll footage
  • 3 0
@spaceofades You can send in a video of getting gnarly and sending it on the RipRow.

@sarahmoore: this Christina person seems like the ideal candidate.

@kingbike2: She's exactly the kind of candidate that we're looking for... If she didn't work at Pinkbike Wink

The entire stay home scam every day is proven to be more and more of a scam...... pathetic how many were proven to be sheeple.

@RoadStain: more annoying than Waki ever was...

@SPKeen: 98% + never show symptoms. Sure wish drunk drivers killed as few as COVID seems to.

@SPKeen: I hate to get in the middle of this, but was waki ever anoying?
  • 1 0
@JacobyDH: probably shouldn't have stirred the pot but couldn't resist. All in good fun/ trash talking.
  • 2 2
@SPKeen: I really didn’t mean to get in the middle of this, or stir the pot... from my limited experience, Waki has been kind, and nice to me, and other users, so I just wanted to put that out there. I don’t want to take sides, or say @RoadStain is better than @SPKeen... I just wanted to say... in my perspective, Waki is not annoying, but then again, I’m new to PB, so what do I know.

My question again for @brianpark and the Pinkbike team working on this (didn't get a reply last time): is there a way to read the Ts & Cs before completing the whole application? I work for one of the sponsors...so I assume that precludes me from entering. But I also can't check because I have to complete the whole application before I can get to them.

I'll get the document uploaded elsewhere and share a URL here shortly.

 @sarahmoore: Thanks Sarah!

If I were more ambitious I'd totally stop-motion a submission with a Playmobil bike. But I'm not. So I won't.

Maybe Pinkbike needs this guy on the show!

I had no idea I needed this. Amazing
  • 4 0
Well that's just fabulous! HOW is that even possible?!?

a href= ”https://youtu.be/G8YfqsMJ9K0">Or this kid/a> who I tortured for about 50 hours a few years ago. Don’t worry, he was compensated.
  • 2 0
 Well that didn’t work! :/
  • 1 0
@BiNARYBiKE: that's awesome. On the plus side I'm assuming that kid got to ride that sweet looking bike so I'm sure the torture was paid in one way or another!

I hope nobody sends in any videos like the seths bike hacks contestant who went all out... with the t-shirts, and stickers...
  • 1 0
 Link? This sounds funny
  • 2 0
 @swenzowski: I’ll try give me a second...
  • 2 0
@JacobyDH: wow, that guy kind of looks like BKXC no? Maybe I'm mistaken, but it feels very prankish
  • 2 0
@swenzowski: yeah, I can see that, but since when did BKXC consider himself a “southern boy”
  • 2 0
@swenzowski: yeah, I can see why you say that. Maybe he wanted it to be that way? Who knows
  • 2 0
@swenzowski: oh, if you look at the comments, “coincidentally” BKXC is the second comment, asking who it was. Probably staged!
  • 2 0
@swenzowski: you’re on to something, I did lots of research, and the bike BKXC used to ride before he got his orbea, was that same Bronson, same paint job, same rims, same tires, and even the same DVO rear shock. It’s staged for sure! Also, it just looks like him.
  • 2 0
 @JacobyDH: No way! hahaha

Something about that southern accent just instantly made me think he was faking it, but I'm a canadian and most Southern accents sound fake to me lol
  • 1 0
@swenzowski: yeah, I’m a Canadian, but I live in the us. (I am a Canadian Citizen). Look at BKXC’s old Santa Cruz, they’re the same! Also, I think it’s fine if they fake it, because Seth just wants to be funny eh?
  • 2 0
@JacobyDH: yeah i don't mind either way, it's funnier if Seth didn't know that BKXC was going to do that though lol

Hey @sarahlukas will these submission videos be used elsewhere for finalists? Should we be careful about using footage that might show or highlight other brands/logos? Ive run into issues with video content before where we had to put tape over logos or had footage that was ultimately un-usable.
  • 1 0
Parts of the finalists' submission videos will likey be used in the series, but don't worry about footage that includes other brands/logos.
  • 3 0
I already put together a video of me sending it with footage from a few weeks ago. Is that not what you're looking for now?
  • 7 0
If you have the footage already filmed, that's great! Given the COVID-19 crisis, we wanted to advise on alternative options for those who do not have existing content filmed. Send it on it!!

How can you stand out in a sea of awesome mountain bikers?

Be Vlad.
  • 1 0
How about if you turn 19 on the 4th of June? As I was going to submit my video last week but didn't because I thought I would be too young
  • 1 0
 You should apply!
  • 3 2
I said it before and I'll say it again... I was born 15 years too early for this sport.
  • 3 1
you would think this for the masters class would sell more bikes...
  • 2 1
Will all the videos be POV solo rides?
  • 1 0
Your submission does not need to be POV.
  • 1 0
Is there an age restriction? I'm 13, the parents are supportive.
  • 5 0
Must be between the ages of 19 and 39 (In Canadian years).
  • 13 0
@bikekrieg: That's 65 to 76 moose years, or 78 to 91 beaver years, for those of you still using the old system
  • 4 1
@swenzowski: Is that regular beaver or pond beaver?
  • 1 0
@bikekrieg: Age bias at its finest
  • 1 0
My names Buck and I like to Huck!
