Charlie Hatton: Preparation - Video

Jan 28, 2016
by CallumPhilpott
Charlie is going into his second season of junior World Cup racing, he has already had his first top 10 on the world cup circuit but unfortunately, he broke his arm mid season which meant he couldn't do the full season he was expecting and he wasn't fully ready for the final races. He has been back on it working hard and I have asked him a few questions about his plans and what he's been doing with his offseason.

What have you been doing with your offseason?

I had a little rest after the last race for some chill time. Now I'm just riding my bike as much as possible, shooting videos, and having a blast! Also started training in preparation for 2016 with Ben Plenge at Mtb factory strength, so I'm aching most days haha. Going abroad soon for some riding in the sunshine which I'm looking forward to!

What is your plan race wise for this season?

My plan is to race all the UK National Series, and a full World Cup series! I will hopefully do a few IXS races as well. I'm also going to ride Portugal for a few weeks and racing a national over there which will be rad!

What race did you enjoy most last season?

Probably World champs Andorra. The track was unreal! I had so much fun shredding with Laurie Greenland in practice and to then see him become Junior World champion was mad.

What are your aims for this season?

I think a good aim would be to stay in Group A practice at World Cups which is top 10. Would be pretty cool to be National Champ as I've been on the podium but never number one. The main aim is to have a blast and gain experience.

Having done your first WC season is it what you expected it to be like?

I didn't really know what to expect going into my first World Cup, it was crazy to say the least! Thousands more people spectating than I was used to. The tracks get a lot more brutal and beat up by race day being a three-day event which makes it much more demanding on your body. Three years ago I never imagined I'd be racing at World Cups!

Favourite riding destination?

That's a tough one, Lourdes is up there alongside Vallnord, Andorra. Both amazing tracks, you also can't beat some local riding on familiar tracks.

What are your main focuses outside of your riding?

Riding takes up a lot of my time but seeing family and friends is what I mostly do outside of riding! They do loads for me so I like spending time with them. Also, college is one of my focuses outside of racing.

Will you stick to just downhill or experiment with other disciplines?

I did an enduro race which was pretty fun and I would probably do another one, but downhill is the one for me haha.

Yeah mountain ash DH track, most of it's closed atm though due to flooding, I know the bottom half is unridable, but there is another trail further down the fire road if you divert when you get to the bottom of the woods.
