When you live in the "Mountain Bike Capitol of Canada", where do you go to ride on the weekends?

Living in Squamish, BC, which recently stole the title of Mountain Bike Capital of Canada from Rossland, BC (a different story for a different time), one tends to get a bit spoiled. We have a massive network of trails and our local advocacy group, SORCA is constantly working to open up new trails and maintain old ones. Squamish also happens to be home to some of the most infamous trail builders to have ever run a shovel, Big Red Ted, Paddy Kaye, Rob Croyqut of Gravity Logic and locals’ favorite father and son duo Dave and Griffen Reid. Gravity Logic built that little place called Whistler Bike Park, which we happen to be only 30 minutes away from. Not to keep rubbing it in but we are just down the road from Pemberton as well, and nothing beats Pemberton after a fall or spring rain.

If you are still reading this, it is pretty clear that we are spoiled, but this all has a dark side…crowds.

Like sharks with the scent of blood, when riders from out-of-town get a whiff of new trails the teeth come out, the loam gets ‘schralped’ and the mineral soil becomes exposed.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a huge proponent of mountain bike tourism, especially in Squamish. It’s a cycle that only has positive benefits, as more people come and enjoy our trails there is more money to re-invest back into our trail infrastructure, ipso-facto more trails for everyone!

However, like powder skiing in Whistler, the loam doesn't last long.

‘Loam’ – there is no better example of a depreciating asset in the world of MTB. Knowing that with every ride down a new trail the loam degrades, and each subsequent run will never be as good as the previous run. It’s this intrinsic quality of loam that makes it so interesting, searching for it and riding it is the mountain bike equivalent of ‘Chasing the Dragon.’ So when Dustin asked if I wanted to head to ride one of the loamiest trails he had ever ridden, obviously I was in. It was time for us to be the sharks, hunting the new trail...

With Vancouver B.C and Seattle W.A so close there is a constant flow of mountain bikers heading North on HWY99 to Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton etc. Dustin and I were going against the flow, driving south on the 99 and then east on the 1 to Chilliwack.

The Zone

I had heard of Vedder for several years now, but knowing it was two hours away I had always written it off like a true Sea to Sky snob. This time going against the flow felt right like we knew something no one else did. Pulling up into an empty parking lot was a welcome change from our local trailheads.

bigquotesSometimes I think Half Nelson needs a parking attendant. Vedder, there wasn't a car in the lot. Save for that newer Range Rover we saw that had been stolen and burned to the ground. - Kevin Landry

Vedder

Vedder is located on the shores of Cultus Lake in Chilliwack, within the Fraser Valley and about an hour east of Vancouver. The surrounding Coast Mountains provide contrast to the lush farmer’s fields in the valley bottom. The Fraser Valley is home to several riding areas with Vedder being the most prominent.

The rain forest here is thick, dense and is a healthy mix between foreboding and inviting. Once in the woods, however, the trail network is extremely varied with something for everyone. The trails are framed with beautiful big trees and surrounded by huge green Sword ferns.

Advanced riders have some incredible black and double black diamond trails to explore, but where Vedder really shines is the sheer number of blue trails. The Blue trails here are inviting for the intermediate riders and provide the advanced guys the opportunity to really ‘open it up’. There is a healthy mix of bermed corners, fun jumps, drops and some ladder bridges to keep you on your toes.

The trail we chose to focus on for this edit is the loam fest called Black Hawk Down, built by Hamish, Ali and Max. These guys can ride, you can tell from their trail work. Corners in all the right places, perfect pitch, lips everywhere and great sightlines. I have never ridden with them but I doubt I could keep up…

bigquotesWatching the weather as our shooting window approached, there was a chance of light rain on the horizon, it was shaping up to be the 'perfect storm,' fresh trail with a few millimeters of rain. In true BC fashion the light rain was more of a deluge, we arrived to a dry hill, except for the 4 inches of mud covering everything. - Kevin Landry

Dustin and I decided to ride a couple laps of some of the older trails, hoping the morning sun would begin to dry things out. As the water started to evaporate and the steam rose in the coastal woods it was prime time for Black Hawk Down.

images for Chasing Trail Vedder Sucks Tell Your Friends - Video

Dropping into Black Hawk was slick- in fact, the first half of that trail was some of the slickest conditions I have ridden to date. It also happened to be one of the best trails I have ridden to date. Disregarding the top layer of slop that made traction just a thing we joked about, Black Hawk Down was a riot. Loam and dirt flying everywhere, foot-out moto turns and smiles from ear to ear. This little line through the woods is a literal masterpiece.

On second thought, disregard this entire article. We didn’t ride Vedder, it sucks there, and you won't like it. I wouldn’t recommend going I doubt you would ever even find a parking spot…

SCOTT Sports, TOPO Films, Dustin and I would like to extend a big thank you to Hamish, Ali, and Max (HAM) for the phenomenal work on your trail.

i keep seeing these vids of people blowing out corners, i guess because 'it looks cool.' Maybe the trails are different in the NW, but here that will ruin trails and give hikers another reason to bitch.
  • 17 5
It I built those trails I would be pissed off
  • 42 16
@madmon: Im sure the builders have an ear to ear smile seeing that. Trails are meant to be ridden, corners are meant to be shredded. Build days exist for a reason, grab a shovel and help out if youre slapping turns all day.
  • 20 1
@gclarida: I build and agree. The stuff I get pissed off about are morons who ride heavily built trails in the dead of rain and RUIN hours and hours and hours and hours of back-breaking work, and those who don't hit corners fast and right-- make braking bumps, pot holes... and they hit all my jumps and features wrong, destroying lips, coming up short on landings, riding the edges and sides of supporting dirt structures of my jumps???? who does that??? etc... now that's stuff to gripe about. Build in the winter, ride hard in the spring/summer/ fall and revisit maintenance in the following winter-- repeat. Oh, and might I add, EVEN GOLFERS HAVE ENOUGH SENSE-- when you mess up a feature, ie. take a large chunk of dirt out of a landing... Stop your bike, go back, and PATCH IT UP! Be thankful someone is out their building for you/ everyone to enjoy. The least you can do is repair what you ruin. Just say'n....
  • 9 1
@gclarida: wtf are you talking about? Build days out here exist to deal with monsoon season tearing apart our trails. If I work on a section all day to see dickheads blowing and skidding through the corners, I am not smiling. You can 'shred' a corner without skidding- you should try it, it actually flows much better.
  • 2 0
The day that trail got opened it had an enduro race on it. Had no ruts a month ago. The builders were stoked, I don't think they'll mind.
  • 2 1
@gclarida: For sure! nothings better than seeing somebody come down a trail you put work into covered in dirt and smiles!
  • 11 1
If you're building a trail and don't expect it to get blown apart, then you're in the wrong racket.
  • 10 0
@LuvAZ: Those two guys in the video are faster than anyone here in this conversation, and could teach a clinic to anyone on corner speed. The builders of this trail ride with these guys and 100% approve of them shredding it.
  • 1 2
@WayneParsons: If your not tasting the dirt from the corner you just blew up your going to slow to ride the trail
  • 2 1
@WayneParsons: do they 100% approve of everybody else blowing up their trails?
  • 2 0
It also totally depends on the type of trail. If you have built a loamer like this one that is loose and fast, then schralp the tits off the corners and everything! that's what those trails are made for!
  • 5 0
@LuvAZ: I build pretty much 4 days a week up her in the PNW, and I fully agree with gclardia. Yes, in AZ that would disintigrate your corners, but here in Cascadia, Ruts are meant to be Railed!!! We've got it pretty good - a few foot rakes of moist dirt and your good to go...
  • 1 0
@trimakas: Yup, I agree it depends on location. Here it is much tougher to work on trails and we really need things to last, especially given the expanse of trail and the relative lack of trail work. And all our trails are multi-use. If you come down from the PNW, please don't explode each corner in a cloud of dust.
  • 6 0
Well let's put this argument to rest. I built the majority of that trail, and I watched this video with a big cheesy grin on my face! I actually bumped into these guys while they were filming and they offered their time on future build days, they also asked permission to film on it beforehand and they were shown the trail by me to start with, so really they couldn't have done anymore to be good guys about the whole thing. I'm stoked on the video, and I'm stoked on the response the trail has received!

You seriously need to stop posting valley videos... City folk keep thems "duffers" to themselves like respuctible bikers!
  • 6 0
"Our local trails are way overcrowded by out of towners...so let's get them pumped on some lesser known trails nearby instead..."
I see what you did here.

Brilliant stuff! What's the song in this? My shazaming skills are insufficient.
  • 5 0
Empty parking lot at vedder Wink ... Clearly wasn't the weekend or after 5pm ....vedder is amazing and the local trail crew works wonders and it certainly shows in how much more popular vedder has become!!.....pretty sure the climbing trail at vedder is the best laid out climbing trail in lower BC....especially if you have ever climbed to fire road of hell....props to all involved
  • 8 1
Why the f*ck are people complaining so much about rad, fuzzed-out, lo-fi, rock 'n' roll? Anyone know the song? I'd like to acquire a copy of it.

They are a great little indie band from Nelson BC, glad you enjoyed the track!

@TOPOFilms: Nelson, eh? Awesome! I grew up in the Koots. Thanks for letting me know.

I feel like I should have waited and saved up more money to buy the Genius LT tuned model. Seeing the bike in action in a few of Scotts latest videos makes me drool.

However, in hindsight if I did save up more $$$ it would have taken much longer to purchase and from what I understand those Tuned models are already sold out. Either that they are in frame sizes that are way too big for me.

Happy I got my Genius 710 which is the next model below the tuned version. Still green with envy when I see these videos ????
  • 7 4
I can not remember reaching for the MUTE switch as fast as I did one minute ago. Sad day when bike videos have a lame sound track that even has a .......... wait for it ...................a 10 second silent intro to the amazing sound crap.
  • 5 3
You are delusional. MTB videos have never had good music.
  • 1 0
@owl-X: there was a few but most are acceptable
  • 8 0
@owl-X: Disorder videos had great music. I got all the soundtracks just so I could listen anytime!
  • 3 0
@krashDH85 @madmon welp, I guess that's what makes us unique and interesting people!
  • 1 0
Ya I had to instantly mute that shit.
  • 8 1
I actually thought the soundtrack was pretty good.
  • 14 8
Not usually one to bitch about this, but holy shit that music was crap.
  • 8 1
 taylor swift hates garage too.

@Clarkeh: thank all the baby jesuses!
  • 3 1
Thank god somebody is with me.

They missed a golden opportunity. The trail is called Vedder. If they played some Pearl Jam this would have been the best video ever. Still great video though.
  • 2 0
@sampolicky: or they could have played something from Vader Big Grin
  • 1 1
Its that hipster stuff, if its not ruining your speakers its not hipster enough.
  • 1 0
@sampolicky: The Mountain is Called Vedder not the Trail.
  • 1 0
@codered3: Woops. Read it wrong. My comment still applies though

Good work Kevin Landry and Dustin ADAM$!!!

 COME ON CHUNK, PEDAL!!!!

Since starting riding knobby tires in '86 in Hood River till today's regular rides in Squampton, Sumas, Fromme, Pemberton, Cumberland, Revelstoke, Whistler blah blah I've never once either worn or ridden with a goggle wearing buddy. Have I missed something?
  • 4 0
 brown pow maybe?
I rock goggles because they're way cheaper than glasses and they work arguably as well. They really are a lifesaver on the muddy days.
  • 12 0
@velvets I don't really get your post. Why would you care what type of gear people use when they ride? Some people like camelbacks, so people like water bottles. Some people wear gloves, some people don't. Some people like clips, some people like flats, some people like glasses and some people like googles. WHO GIVES A SHIT! This is a great little article, with an awesome edit and some amazing photos! Enjoy it!
  • 6 0
Yes you've missed that getting mud in your contacts really really sucks.
  • 3 0
Dustin Adams is Baaaaack! Legend. Braaap. His video segment from Sun Peaks back in the day (Can anyone find it and post it here?) is still one of the best DH edits ever.
  • 1 0
 Kick ass riding Dustin!
  • 2 0
Glad they didn't show the other trails they rode before this one. Then we'd never find a parking spot.... Vedder is a blast!
  • 4 0
Rad vid...I dig the edgy tune .
  • 2 0
The Fraser Valley rules! If you ride Vedder make sure you go down to the beach after at Cultus Lake, it's right next to the bike trails.

Poor Rob - one day they'll spell his last name right. It's Cocquyt. Flemish and proud Smile

And Griffin with two i's. Smile
  • 1 0
Ha! Funny complaining about trail traffic on Sea-to-Sky. Riding Squamish on a weekend is pleasantly vacant compared to the traffic jam clusterf*ck that the Front Range has become.
  • 1 0
Is Dustin running an SR Suntour or an Ohlinns fork? Probably a dumb question, I'm just interested.
  • 1 0
looks like the ohlinns. but..... it really looks like the cane creek fork I saw on one of their employees bike.it was a prototype and looks siiiiiick.
  • 1 0
Actually looks like he's running DVO suspension front and rear. With respect to the fork though I could be wrong...
  • 1 0
 Yes Dusty is running DVO

  • 4 0
those two are better riders than anyone here, and many of those catch berms are exactly that: catch berms. They are also coffee cake soft.

 What ? British Columbia ?
Oh dear, it's been a while I hadn't hear about it on Pinkbike Big Grin
  • 6 0
You do realize PB is based out of BC right? It's like complaining Dirt has too much UK content. Not trying to get harsh on you, i just see this type of comment so often.
  • 1 0
@lostlunchbox: Not trying to get harsh on you, but I think you need to learn second degree humor and what irony means
  • 1 0
Not seeing Black Hawk Down on the map. Any help?

That song is literally raping my ears. Why bike videos have the shittiest underground music?
  • 9 0
Literally? Wow that sucks dude. Did you call the cops or anything?
