Press Release: Whyte Bikes

We are delighted to announce our sponsorship of the legendary Chris Akrigg!

Chris is a former 6x British Bike Trials champion and one of the most technical bike riders on the planet. He's well-known for his jaw-dropping riding videos, such as Five, As It Lies, A Hill In Spain and many more. He has the ability to jump on pretty much any bike – be they hardtails, road and gravel bikes, BMXs, rigid trials bikes, trail full-suspension, fixies, DH rigs and many more – and make them sing to his unique tune.

To celebrate Chris joining Whyte, we’re releasing a short film - Going Beyond, Episode 1 - in which you can see Chris riding and learn more about what makes him tick.

Whyte has been engineering award-winning bikes that perform without compromise and, much like Chris, doing things differently since the day we started some 22 years ago. Our first breakthrough bike (the PRST-1) rewrote the rules. And we continue in that spirit; relentlessly seeking and developing the next big performance and reliability advantages with pioneering innovations.

Chris's custom E-160 RSX

“E-bikes are one of the most exciting things,” Chris explains of his passion for embracing electric. "Once I jumped on one for the first time, I was like ‘Wow! They’re really good fun.’ But then you get to, ‘Right, what can this help me do? How can I make this my own? And how can I push it and make my bike do what other people can't?'"

Alongside the E-160 RSX, Chris is also riding our 629 trail hardtail, T-140 29er trail bike, and Gisburn gravel bike, so expect to see them all being fully Akrigg'd soon.

@bashhard: that anglebox he's got is amazing

He should also get a trail e-dog. The analog dogs are so old-school.

Ahh I'm glad to see Chris land himself with yet another tidy manufacturer!

Whyte bikes are pretty good value for money and correct me if im wrong - isnt it the dude who designs/designed Marin bikes?
  • 18 3
That was Jon Whyte - original designer. Marin and Whyte shared (bad) suspension platforms back when ATB Sales distributed both. Marin have since gone alone - well, not alone, they're owned by Polygon which is why both brands shared the (bad) R3ACT suspension platform.

Whyte have had a different designer for years - marked by having decent suspension designs.

@davechopoptions: I had a Whyte G160 several years ago. It was a sweet bike, especially at the price! Hard to find in the US at the time but most other people I knew who had one really liked the brand.
  • 3 0
@rbarbier12: That's one of the "current era" 4-bar bikes isn't it?
  • 1 0
@davechopoptions: Yep! Bike ripped. It was a small with a 65° HTA and 450mm reach back in 2016, which was pretty impressive at the time. Super stable at speed. Heavy as hell though!
  • 3 0
@davechopoptions: thought the r3act was actually pretty good. So did many others. Just never caught on.
  • 5 0
@davechopoptions: I had a few quad link bikes that I liked, starting with a Marin Mount vision pro that replaced a Specialized Epic, with regular riding that needed new bearings and horst link bushing every 8 weeks, after 6 months I gave up on it, between that and the Marin I had a trek fuel with the glued in bearings, those lasted 8 hours before falling out, that went back to Trek after less than a month. The Marin just worked without issue, as did an E5 and E120 carbon that followed. The E120 was my favorite, yes it had occasional brake jack if you miss timed braking in rock gardens but I absolutely loved that bike, sub 12kg with 120 travel, the original down country rocket ship that is long over due a re-boot.
  • 2 0
@leviatanouroboro: it was definitely bad looking, I guess that's why it didn't catch on.
  • 1 0
@Riggbeck: Bearings were solid for the time for sure, but the leverage rate was huge as was the chain growth. Frame construction and alignment were poor too. Amazing how things have moved forward since then.
  • 1 0
@davechopoptions: It definitely wasn't successful but the Naild R3ACT 2-PLAY system was awesome actually and easy to maintain.. aside from all the bearings. Long story short, I loved my Mount Vision, climbed better than most bikes I tried and was a capable descender too.
  • 1 0
@davechopoptions: shared bad suspension designs? You must never have ridden a Whyte back in the day, the Whyte E5 had fantastic suspension. Wiped the floor with all other brands I tried.

Impressive how he muscles that thing around. You can tell he is muscling it though. My favorite thing about Chris’s riding was how how energetic it was. The new rig makes it look more labored
  • 7 0
I don’t know. Seems like his trademark is muscling bikes around. He has a lot of power, for sure.

I wish Whyte would start selling in the US again. I had a 160 and a 130. Awesome bikes. The T-130 had over 10k miles on it.

I have many friends on e-bikes and many on pedal bikes. We all ride together. It’s all about about getting out and riding with some friends and enjoying good times.

Nice video but I enjoyed the salted flowing tears of the ehaters even more. Delicious.

Is the battery switched off trials game the new 'no brakes' or 'no freewheel'
  • 5 1
If you've felt the weight of one of these juggernaut bikes you'll be even more in awe at the stuff Chris does. Must have been an unbelievable deal to jump from GT to that heavy ass rig
  • 14 11
Funny how top pro's like this have no issues with Ebikes....same with my group of friends, we've all been riding for 20+ years and don't care, some have them some don't but none are bothered by them.

Also that 180 hope to rear at 1:35 is next level.

 1) I can think of a handful pros. The implication of your comments is that 100% of top professional riders like ebikes. I'd wager that's not true.

2) Even it outwardly presented itself as true, you need to consider that it's their job to help their sponsors sell bikes.
  • 8 4
@pmhobson: I'd wager they just wanna have fun and don't contribute to the virtue signaling you see from many commenters here. Not in my immediate social circle, but extend that out to friends of friends and several pro riders and industry pro's all have them.....I've never heard anything but positive support.

You can think of a handful that don't like them? Do share.
  • 9 4
@RadBartTaylor: you realize that a sponsored rider speaking negatively of the cycling segment with largest growth potential is exactly what their employer doesn’t want them to do, right?

No one signs a contract with a bike company out of the goodness of their heart. Marketing departments’ jobs are to make sure that we either:

A) hear great things about motorized bikes, or
B) hear nothing at all.

Fact of the matter is that the cycling industry dumping these things into our laps and uh to to the trails without doing one iota of advocacy for them with land managers, and now expect all of the mostly volunteer trail non-profits to do that for them.
  • 4 3
@pmhobson: i gotta wonder, how many ski, snowboard, motorbike, car manufacturers did any advocacy with land managers to produce their product.
i disagree with you here, it's our job to do the advocacy, it's their job to make us stuff we want.

where does it end? do you expect say wao to come down to new zealand to argue for greater access into craigieburn to extend trails there? should they be in south africa doing the same?

have you thought this through regarding the costs involved (staff, travel, time etc) for the company and the follow on increases in retail prices to accommodate this? this would affect all their products not just ebikes

i kinda suspect this has nothing to do with access, you just don't like ebikes and haven't thought through the consequences of your post.
don't get me wrong, it's totally fine to not like them. just like i think telemarkers are just plain weird.
  • 5 3
@pmhobson: so you haven't heard anything bad about them from pro riders - got it, sounded like you were posturing that you had.

Any pro or seasoned rider is going to have fun on an Ebike - but I do bring up my 'social' circle since I do get a more intimate view into the heads of what some industry pro's ride and the majority are on the Ebikes (and moto for that matter) bandwagon...
  • 5 0
@p0rtal00: The snowboarding industry did exactly that!

"Dave Alden, a professional snowboarder on the Burton team during the 1980s, recalls his father, Paul Alden, and Jake Burton calling up insurance company representatives. After making their pitch for snowboarding, the insurance company representative “revised their policies to allow boards and allowed the ski areas to do what they wanted.” Paul Alden, an executive in the snowboard industry, was the driving force behind many of the larger ski areas allowing snowboarders on their slopes, and was a “catalyst for all things (for the snowboard industry), and instrumental off the snow.”

www.summitdaily.com/news/snowboardings-beginnings-the-struggle-to-allow-snowboarding

More to the point -- lobbying private industry is different than advocacy work with (typically) public land managers. Ski -> Snowboarding and Bikes -> eBikes are a bad analogy. Snowboarding never threatened access to mountains for skiers.
  • 4 0
@RadBartTaylor: Yeah. To clarify, I meant: "I can think of a handful of pro riders who speak positively about ebikes, possibly because of their obligations to their sponsors". Conversely, I can think of as many pro riders who have said nothing about ebikes.
  • 3 4
@pmhobson: none of can read the minds of riders, maybe they hate analog bikes too, but like I said the ones I've had exposure too, first and second hand, all seem to think highly of them
  • 4 0
 @RadBartTaylor: I never disputed that.
  • 1 2
@pmhobson: good on the man, to put the goal posts back where they started though.

"Fact of the matter is that the cycling industry dumping these things into our laps and uh to to the trails without doing one iota of advocacy for them with land managers".

it's not their job. we decide where we ride our bikes not the manufacturer.
when have bike manufacturers done any land advocacy? so considering it's been riders advocating for access not manufacturers why should they for ebikes.

like i said, if we want to ride in areas currently not allowed it's up to us to cajole the owners into allowing it.
The point is they haven't, nor did burton. yes they approached the insurance companies that affected a small section of colorado and only those that the ski fields in colorado were using. thankfully it snowballed to other areas (pun intended). if they didn't there's a good chance there'd be no burton gear today.

we may be at odds for no reason though as we have different laws regarding bikes, ebikes etc so i may be missing something you guys have to deal with.

private land is still private land though, whenever we want to ride back country we go ask the cocky (farmer) can we ride there. most of the time they look at us like we're idiots wanting to ride up the side of a sodding mountain but a respectful and polite approach usually works (except lambing, don't want to interfere with the ewes). also taking half a dozen in the car as a thank you is a real winner.

oh boy didn't mean to end up writing a darn essay.

@p0rtal00: The real message here is that carrying 6 sheep in your car is a licence to shred.
  • 1 0
 @p0rtal00:

1) Don't ever apologize (to me) for fleshing out nuanced thoughts (re: "darn essays"). I'm not terribly familiar with NZ landuse and land access policies, but I get the impression it's very different than here in the US. Specifically in Northwest Oregon, we have to fight tooth and nail for 5 - 10 years to get access to highly constructed, multi-use green trails. Near Portland, a regional government purchased some former timberland, and wants to turn it into a park and build family-friendly hiker-biker-equistrian trails. The fact that they included bikes in the proposal nearly killed it. The county board just *barely* approved the landuse change (from commercial forest to park), but recommended bikes stay out *due to environmental concerns*. Literally, the anti-bike crowd was making the case that it would be better for local amphibians if the property remained a commercial forest.

2) In light of my first point "it's not their job. we decide where we...." I'm going to respectfully disagree there. I think it is their job. At the very least it's in their best interest. If they don't start stepping up more, I'm concerned there are certain spots where even non-motorized bikes might become harder to sell.

@pmhobson: it's refreshing to have a disagreement without all the yelling, screaming and crying that happens on pb.
generally on most of our major dual use tracks there's a separation, for instance the Queen Charlotte and Heaphy are closed to bikes between 1st dec to 28 feb due to the many hikers, check these pics out:
www.google.com/search?q=queen+charlotte+track&sxsrf=AJOqlzVWnSvKsxBwa15ClWir-yctX1PTPw:1678308769654&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi9pKewm839AhUrAbcAHWAzAWsQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1280&bih=881&dpr=1
www.google.com/search?q=heaphy+track&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiv7Jqym839AhVG23MBHYUnDyUQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=heaphy+track&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQyBQgAEIAEMgUIABCABDIFCAAQgAQ6BAgAEEM6BwgAEIAEEBg6BggAEAcQHlC6CljXGGC9H2gAcAB4AIABxAGIAZEKkgEDMC43mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=pfUIZO-FJ8a2z7sPhc-8qAI&bih=881&biw=1280

whereas tracks like the Old Ghost Road and Paparoa are open all the time - disclaimer - also depends on the weather.
Craigieburn is closed in the winter due to it being partly on a skifield.
For the rest if it's crown land there are some local restrictions but in general open to all and sundry.

 E bikes are fun!

Chris is legend. I think with the motor on there it's just opened up something new for him. A different way to attack features that likely would not be possible without an assist. You've been at it this long sometimes you need some re-creation. I don't have an E-bike, don't want one. Steals some of the beauty of the sport for me. But when my knee is hurting so bad I don't feel like I can ride that hard I think about it. They have a place.
  • 1 0
Good to see Chris riding for a UK brand. Whyte make good bikes and have amazing customer support. They're not as good value as they used to be (thanks to Brexit and covid I guess) but they generally make sensible spec choices. They really do focus on handling though!

Amazing skills and one very cool car.

Glad for Chris, I love his edits from the first one, no matter what bike he rides, he´s super-skilled and you always know there will be some sketchy lines and moves.

btw the car is amazing
  • 3 1
He will be able to do even more technical insanity climbing on the bosch. The software controlling the EMTB mode and over-run is in a league of its own.
  • 1 0
I think his style to ride an Ebike is what gets me most excited about them. I dont need them for easyer Uphills but this kinda reminds me of moto trails and it just looks great
  • 3 0
psyched to see a trail bike edit from him soon
  • 1 0
So what happened between Chris and GT? He was with Mongoose forever and really seemed to like it there, then switched to GT for a short time, and now on Whyte? I'm curious.

 Qwhyte the change.
  • 2 3
All I see is 29 this 29 that. Give him a 26! Its what the people want! A short 26" trials bike to be precise Smile There's only so much "trying to hop on the back wheel on a full sus", an Akrigg fan can take..
  • 1 0
Awesome news, seems like a great pairing. Looking forward to Chris’s next edits.
  • 9 9
I hope that his contract also lets him ride bikes. That trials e-moto looks like someone forgot to install the throttle, would be must better with one I bet.
  • 7 7
Hahaha very clever anti ebike comment, wow so fresh and original
  • 3 3
Can you read? At the bottom of the article it states what bikes he'll be riding
  • 1 0
Unique rider with unique style and taste.
  • 14 17
Of course it's fun ..it has a motor.. anything motorized is going to be fun and exhilarating..I hop on my 450 when I want to feel the power and boy is it fun ..but it's not mountain biking I don't want my mountain bike to have a motor.. destroys the discipline.
  • 16 11
Grow up. If you don't like ebikes don't ride one it's that simple. It doesn't destroy anything. More than anything no one person defines mountain biking for anyone else. Get out have some fun, it's all very subjective what your fun is versus what anyone else's fun is.
  • 11 8
Great, you don't want your mountain bike to have a motor - don't buy one that does then. Easy.

Can you please explain why people like you continue to feel like we all need to hear your opinion on ebikes? I don't want to hear it man, I'm not interested! Seriously at this point is there not a "we hate ebikes" forum so you can tell each other just how much ebikes are ruining the sport and leave us in peace?
  • 7 4
LOL, comparing an Ebike to a 50+ hp moto! Get real dude.....is there not room in between? I'm guessing you've never ridden an Ebike, they don't feel "powerful" at all, it offsets the additional weight and puts out about as much added power as a top cyclist would, which is to say not much.

That new Mongoose is looking good.
