The Colorado Freeride Festival set the stage for an awesome weekend here at Winter Park Resort for the Slopestyle event. The collection of riders that traveled here to compete was diverse, from BMX legends Ryan Nyquist and Drew Bezanson to returning CFF Slopestyle champ Carson Storch from Oregon, to first time being overseas seventeen-year-old Emil Johansson from Sweden. Several of the riders were pre-qualified for Crankworx Joyride next month in Whistler, but a lot of extra excitement and pressure was out there for the contenders that were focused on scoring one the two available Joyride wildcards offered at this venue. Many in attendance reflected on the good times and positive influence of the legendary Kelly “McGazza” McGarry, who was an integral part of the CFF Slopestyle. In fact, the ramp features used on-course for the event were built by McGarry. To top things off, Elevate Trail Building designed a fun course that all the riders enjoyed.

The level of riding in Friday’s qualifiers was undeniably impressive and it was the same come finals. For Saturday’s grand finale, practice kicked off, but a heavy tailwind made it sketchy for big tricks. At the riders meeting, everyone supported the idea of taking a chance to see if the wind would let off in the afternoon. The wind did let off and the event picked back up just before sunset. The delay didn’t throw the spectators off, they covered the hillside of the Sorensen’s run to watch the heavy antics as riders started sending it.

Anyone else getting a little tired of Rogatkin's over the top run celebrations? I liked the guy when he first came on the scene as just a trick machine despite not being stylish but I just cringe watching his football esque celebrations now.

i'll take 'over the top run celebrations' anyday compared 'emo bitch sourpuss faces' ..............
  • 11 6
Not really brah, stop hating on the man....what do you prefer the emo-tight jeans wearing i am too cool for this shit rider?
  • 20 10
I always thought rogatkins celebrations were SUPER cringey. But I don't care about that, anyone is free to celebrate how they like when they're up there. What I am tired of is how insanely predictable his runs are now.
  • 4 1
@anchoricex: most judged sport events are cringey.

its art for christs sake, not a race.
there is no clear winner.

it all gets a little pro wrestling after a while.
  • 11 1
I think his celebrations are well deserved. That was an insane run...
  • 9 1
@Trilliamiano: Absolutely. People need to get off their couches if pulling that sort of run is "predictable" or boring in some way. Can't fault a guy for being over the moon for nailing his dream run on the edge of his abilities
  • 3 1
@BeardlessMarinRider: Your comment is a nice comment.
  • 3 1
"Predictable" is when Semenuk did the crankworx rotorua run very similar to the previous year and you know he is going to stomp it. As long as judges don't make criteria to dock it, predictability is a rider quality most sought after.

It wouldn't be pinkbike without someone complaining about Rogatkin

"For presenters at a mountain bike event, it doesn't get any better and more entertaining that Cam McCaul and Brad Jay."

Says who? Cam is wicked but ...................

Why does everyone seem to hate brad? He's not the best announcer but better than those 2 dudes who sound like they're falling asleep the whole time

 you're reading it wrong

I still don't understand how he got the job or why they let him keep it
  • 3 2
 Because he's the hiring manager.

I prefer the Claudio Calouri and Rob Warner combination

I've never been a Brad Jay fanboy, but he's at least trying to improve and learn more about the riders, etc.
  • 27 7
i still think you guys are confusing brad jay with brad ewen.

brad ewen was a hack behind the mic...............

brad jay is an EVENT HOST and has worked such gigs as the x-games, dew tour and the la clipper's in house host.

brad jay is NOT a color commentator, that's someone else's job.

brad jay is an event host and he does a killer job of herding cats all day long behind the mic.

show some respect to brad jay who is a true professional and not some hack like the majority of mtb event hosts.

tippie and warner don't even come close to brad jay as an EVENT HOST.

brad jay is the best god damn mtb event host in the game and you guys are talking shit?

wake up .

being a color commentator is pretty easy if ya know your shizz, but an event host?, thats a hard f ing job, real hard.
  • 8 1
@stacykohut: totally agree with your comment. Brad is doing a very good job. hey may not be the best host for mtb, but overall he is just great. BTW his voice is just too cool.
PS: warner can do everything better, than anyone on the world but he just doesn't give a f*ck Big Grin

I see what you did there... Wink

Was a great event to watch live. Newcomers throwing down huge runs, plenty of 1st run drama and a difficult to predict result. Everybody was casing somewhere in there run and losing speed. Cam talking about the shift from a tail to a head wind and how hard it is to judge, when all of a sudden Matt Jones came through like a fucking freight train. Tuck no flip on the boner where others had struggled for speed, followed by that double flip on the last jump, simply awesome. Props to everybody competing, guys were throwing down.

That Tomas Lemon guy looks an awful like one of the other French riders.
  • 1 3
We need Rob Warner and Cam Mccaul commentating with Claudio doing course side interviews + his world famous track preview would be ideal for slopestyle
  • 4 0
Why would you want someone from horse racing to do a course preview on a nascar track?
  • 1 4
I want rob Warner doing slope style commentating Nuff said
  • 1 0
yeh but he would only commentate the odd 'old school' tricks, how gnarly the riders are on the berms. a few 'Stay on your bike!' shouts and a final lap time.

I feel like 4th with a foot slip these days is as good as it gets. Obviously he would have won if he didn't slip that pedal.
  • 1 0
4th was a good spot i reckon for a foot slip. i did at first think it was badly judged and he should have got 3rd but emils run was so solid. The amount of time it took to get the score was bull shit though.
