PRESS RELEASE: Commencal Bicycles

Before we start, let’s make one thing clear... We are a bike brand through and through!

But we also live in the mountains and when we can’t ride bikes all winter because of the snow, we use them for another adrenalin filled sport. What better way to honour this way of life and compliment our range of bikes with a choice of skis! The COMMENCAL x FACTION Friendship is born.

FACTION has long been a reputable ski brand who have a similar ethos to ourselves. We love to be out on the hill and in the woods whatever the weather, but we must also be able to rely on our equipment. Now we know that we can spend more time worrying about how steep that couloir is rather than whether our equipment will cope. (Just like Candide Thovex!)

Of course, the META and SUPREME play their part! Our META all-mountain ski is designed to go anywhere, carve up anything in its path but also float nicely on those fresh days. The SUPREME is made for ultimate performance in the deep stuff; stiffer, stronger, faster. Hit those drops you’ve been eyeing up for ages…

The spirit is totally in-keeping with our bikes and with FACTION we carry that spirit through to these winter playground essentials!

No room for a water bottle though....

Not true, could mount copious water bottles and bananas to the top of the skis

can't wait to see Barelli's videos on those!

Would like to see him take them down Dirt Merchant like he did with that cross bike

They're trying to book Candide Thovex!

So after a bit of research, seems like the Meta is based on the Prodigy 3.0 and the Supreme is based on the Dictator 3.0 skis from Faction. Commencal ones looks soooo much better. And pricing is about the same.

for the same price, I would go to Faction .. if it's like their bikes, the design is nice but it's crack assured aha

@basiledownhill: i would have the opposite reaction. i remember a lot of broken factions when I used to ski plenty, but my meta has held up incredibly well to years of hard riding and still rode like new the day i sold her.

i wouldn't be surprised if factions are durable well built skis nowadays.

@jonaslp1: some of us actually want a challenge though. You know what they say, skiing, so easy a snowboarder could do it ????
  • 5 0
@m47h13u: nobody says that outside of the cringe olympics
  • 1 0
@anchoricex: i think it goes about skiing "if it were easy, they would call it snowBOREDing"?

I've been hoping for a long time one of the direct sales brands would get into skis with direct sales pricing, just missing the direct sales pricing tho
  • 5 0
I just bought some skis from J Skis, they do the factory direct thing. Not one of the bike brands but the same idea
  • 5 0
@src248: J Skis now owns 4frnt Skis, too. Or maybe I should say that Jason Levinthal owns J Skis and 4frnt Skis now
  • 3 0
@the-lorax: And seems to be doing his best to turn them into some sort of budget ski company with huge discounts on really well received skis. I have no idea what he's doing to them but the brand had a lot of value and I'm not sure it will any more after a few more seasons of "BUY ONE GET ONE FREE" type offers.
  • 2 0
@kingtut87: Ya, it's a bit odd. I don't really know what he's doing there... but as far as I know, the 4fnt skis still have the same construction and development as pre-purchase. I really love my old 4frnt CRJ's
  • 2 0
Melt Skis is actually founded by one of the YT founders
  • 2 0
Few people can afford good skis at their original release-year price anyways; go get any top-tier skis, which are season or two old, for half of the price during the summer sales... If you are so picky abot the brand and model then be ready to pay big money, it is quite simple really
  • 4 0
@the-lorax: and i miss seeing CR rippin them through the back country
  • 1 0
@milkdrop: Actually I think the discounts on freshly released skis are waaaay better than for anything bike-related, but that may be a german thing. Just bought the new Bent Chetler 100 with a Pivot 14 for 518 € instead of 750-800 €. The same was true for my touring and powder skis.

In the proud company of other well respected Ski/Bike brands... like K2!
  • 19 0
Scott is actually reputable in both
  • 5 0
@awitt: Scott skis are seriously underrated. Also Rossignol is now making mountain bikes under their branding now that they picked up Felt.
  • 2 1
@vtracer: I learned how to snowboard on a rossignol. Quality brand with solid mid range prices. Do you know anyone who’s ridden or seen one of their bikes?
  • 1 1
 @awitt:

Scott skis are built by Fischer.
  • 3 0
@mph51: Saw one outside a shop in Avoriaz this year. An ebike. Broke my brain.
  • 1 0
@mph51: The Rossignol bikes were made solely with the intention of supplying hire fleets for resort shops, although the second hand ones are starting to pop up on french classifieds
  • 3 0
The Supreme is literally only a 1mm wider under foot than the all mountain Meta and they're labeling it as their Pow specific stick?
  • 1 0
I've been riding Faction skis for the past 10 years after getting to know some of their riders in Verbier. Yes they are not the cheapest, but they do last. I've had my fat skis for 8 years now and they're still going strong, The only reason I want to change them is new technology. I accidentally skied over what was essentially a gravel road. Quick wax and sharpening of the edges and done. Highly recommended. In skiing it's cheap, good, durable => Pick 2
  • 1 0
I have not had the same luck with faction skis. Broken 2 pairs (first one the sidewall separated from the core, second one the edge on the top ripped out). I will say that faction has an excellent warranty program. But not excellent durability. But they happens when the skis are made of balsa wood
  • 1 0
Intresting, but I remain awaiting for ''commemcal'' skitouring model: climb (with skins) for funny downhill, like with enduro traill bike when there isn't snow. Mountain passion in all seasons
  • 1 0
I’m fairly sure you can put some skins on both of those
  • 1 0
I was woundering who was going to make these for you guy's!!! Faction is a great company!!! And Dave Bottomly is the best ski'er out there!!! Send it !!
  • 1 0
I just wonder if they are simply re-branded skis or if they are different to current Faction skis. I could be interesting cause I like the shape of the Factions but find them to stiff to my likings (translation: I'm too slow and/or not good enough).
  • 1 0
@EnduroManiac: my Candide 3s definitely aren't stiff. There's barely any metal in them.
  • 1 0
@el-nombre: I have some Prodigy 2 that are given as medium by Faction while the Candide 3 is given as medium to stiff. So I assume the Candide is stiffer than my Prodigy, which I find too stiff for floating over powder (I know, it’s not really what they are made for). Maybe I am biased by my JJ noodles Smile
  • 1 0
@EnduroManiac: ha fair enough. Horses for courses
  • 1 0
I feel confused... I came to pinkbike and i found a ski ad and a ski movie in the home page. Took me seconds to figure out... Not a bad thig however

 Doesn't look like a Session..

Just bought Sego skis. USA made and look amazing. stoked to try them out. I love the small ski manufacturers more than the big anymore.
  • 1 0
Sego is nogo, the factory is closed, production stopped a month ago.
  • 3 1
I would buy a commençal snowboard!! Graphics looks great!!!!
  • 3 1
 Candide rides Commencal?
  • 1 0
Well he rides for Faction, who make these skis
  • 1 0
Damn those are cool, shame I literally just got new skis today Razz
  • 3 2
Yea, new skis, what a shame. It really is too bad. We all feel for you.
  • 1 0
Those do look nice. I could see myself on a pair of those.
  • 1 4
Too bad the ski pricing isn't as good as their bike pricing. At those price points there are other brands that have been around for longer and have a known performance and reliability. I was hoping the ski pricing be more in line with their bikes that are 1/3-1/2 the price of the major brands and make some of the manufacturers step up their game. C'est la vie.
  • 6 0
I mean they are literally faction skis, and given how many times FACTION is written in the article Commencal wants people to know that mostly to justify pricing. I don’t see pricing in the press release but, why would these be cheaper than the rest of factions lineup? They are a semi boutique ski maker
  • 2 1
@jj12jj: because commencal bikes are roughly half the price of bikes from the old brands for a comparable build kit. That's kind of been their whole deal, saving money by cutting out the middle man and being direct to consumer. If they're cutting out local shops for ski sales the prices should reflect that.

How much does the Idler weigh
  • 1 0
What’s the weight on 190 cm Metas? @COMMENCALbicycles
  • 1 0
as a snowboarder this is a no-go for me
  • 1 0
Same as the Faction Prodigy 3 & Governor - except better colorways!
  • 1 0
 *Dictator - not governor haha.

 First, the Price.

 Arm, and leg.

Santa Cruz makes snowboards and skateboards
  • 7 0
 Different Santa Cruz bro
  • 2 0
@spaceofades: I always thought the bikes had been an offshoot of the skateboards brand tbh. Brand label looks identical across all SC products. I now stand corrected.
