Crankbros 50/50XX Pedals Review

Dec 4, 2008
by Tyler Maine
The 50/50 are Crankbros' flat pedals, with a unique feature of removable plates, which allow pin location to be easily customized. With the removable plates, pins can be accessed from the back. No matter how worn down the pins get, they can always be removed. The plates are made of a harder aluminum than the pedal body, which is smart, since they are located in the pedal area that gets the worst abuse.

There are two versions of the 50/50 pedal. The XX, which I am running, have sealed cartridge bearings and weigh 558g. The X type have ball bearings, and weigh in at 618g. Both come with a second plate and long pin set. Besides looking extremely slick, my 50/50XX are light and their long pins provide good grip. Since putting them on, I have not slipped a pedal, for which my shins are grateful. I have mine set up with 9 pins per side, with space for more if I see a need for them. Although two months is not a long-term durability test, my 50/50 bearings feel as smooth as the first ride, and have been problem free.

photo

Rumor has it that the two plates on the pedals can separate. I did not experience a problem with this, and after two months of hard use in the racing and training circuit, the plates were still secure to the main body.

If you are looking for a great looking set of pedals that will keep your feet glued to your bike without weighing your ride down, the odds are you will dig the Crankbrothers 50/50. The 50/50X are available in sage/anthracite or silver/anthracite and retail for $90. The 50/50XX come in black/silver or red/black and retail for $130. Extra plates and pins are available in a variety of different colors.

50/50 is quite an apt name for these pedals, as in there is a good 50/50 chance they will go wrong!
Crankbrothers = cheap products in fancy packaging...

are you a hacker? Honestly? There's a few of us running them on our dj bikes and they've held up great. A mate of mine bent his crank arms over jumping a dj and his 5050's are still in top nick.
  • 10 9
yeh i run them my dj bike, i have had them 1yr 1/2 and there still great
  • 23 1
i think they look awesome but they are kinda heavy and my axel had some pretty good play in it. i dont like these pedals and the stock pins suck!! but their customer service was great with the replacement pins i replaced them with some xpedo mags in black and i love those
  • 20 4
when riding in the wet they are the slpperyest pedals ever. lol
  • 4 2
i must admite awsemoe pedals for mild use but day to day trail riding d/h the plates start to slide and the pins drop out very common problem but other than that good opedals highly recommended Big Grin

the 50/50x bearings do suck agreed, its what i have, but the 50/50xx is definatly a good pedal... its what im getting for next season
  • 8 3
Mine came stock on my Sunday... and they LITERALLY fell apart on the very first ride, without any impact to them. The screws holding the plates on all backed out and the plates fell apart mid-ride. They had good grip when they were in one piece, but they are otherwise garbage.
  • 2 1
yeah i rode some for a little bit and they sucked. they had terrible grip and a wierd feel overall.
  • 4 1
id say they have the same grip as those shitty plastic pedals that are on walmart bikes. if u do however choose to get a the long pins, its not a bad pedal.
  • 2 2
I feel the same way. The stock pins in them suck. I had them come apart on me on the first ride at Northstar. They are an interesting idea, but until they get the pin issue sorted out, I will ride my 1 piece pedals and not be worried about them failing mid ride.
  • 17 2
i bought these and they suck. plates fall out, pins are worthless, bearings siezed. the hardware holding on the plates are as small as the screws on a pair of sunglasses, good luck doing anything with them when they're full of mud, or after you strip them out the first time you touch them. 618 grams?!?!? thats a full 1/4 pound heavier than any other worthy pedal on the market! 130$ for these pieces of s*#t?!?!
sorry crank bros..... EPIC FAIL
  • 13 3
im just gonna be mr negative prop after this... but if you all dont know how to check bolt tightness on your effing pedals you deserve them to fall off
  • 0 0
looks like theyd be cool for street, you could put lots of pins in to give better grip, and you could have cool colour schemes. though ive heard the whole pedal flexes since its make up of parts. good or bad?...
  • 0 0
I've been through two sets of cranks with these pedals on them and they're still in good shape. I've got the X model but they look and grip well with the screw-like pins.
  • 1 0
i had a set (50/50 x) and the bearings died in 2-3 months. they had next to no grip. my friends new bike came with the xx version with long pins, and i admit, it had decently good grip, but a month later the bearings completely seized and he had to get new pedals.

yeah i've never really been a fan of thses pedals. ive never owned a pair but all my friends 50/50s are always coming apart and breaking and their slippery as f*ck! go ahaid and neg prop me. ha watever. these do look pretty sick though im not gonn alie haha
  • 0 0
i dont think anyone is going to neg prop you..look at all these guys with the same problem as your friend's..
  • 4 0
Perosnally i think if you have the money, get a pait of straightlines. At 519 grams they're hard to beat. There super grippy aswell have having bushings intead of bearings. The one thing i do like about 50/50's are the custom factor

I love the way these pedals look but after 1 month of riding the plates pulled right out of the pedal and the spindle bent. Not to mention the fact that you have to tighten the pins every ride. For half the money I got a set of Axiom Road Gap II's and now I never have a problem. 50/50's are more show than go.
  • 0 3
 shit
  • 5 2
those pedals sucks really hard. i service my pedals regulary put still those plates came loose and after 4month of riding my needlebearings broke for me those pedals looks like a cheap bearing pedals only costs double so if you want really good pedals buy straitline, funn, easton or atomlab because good grip and long lifetime has been guaranted!!!
  • 0 3
 shit
  • 10 8
I was realy excited, the same as you when i firts got mine, but in the last month, i have lost 3-4 pins, one of the plates came loose, and almost all of the pins are barely sticking up through the surface. The bearings are flawless, still running perfectley. I would love them to work well, they look amazing, but they suck...
  • 6 1
easy remedy--loctite, problem solved that is what I do with mine and the only time that I EVER loose a pin is when it gets smacked into a rock. When i got mine I got the extra set of pins fromt he bike shop, not the regular shiny ones that come with with it but the one that look like screws. I put a gob of loctite on, give it about 1. turns in and let it set. You get amazing grip with these and they do not fall out.
  • 7 2
Yeah, that would work, but why should you have to dismantle a pedal and locktite everything for them to work okay?? They should just be built properly in the first place.
  • 2 2
ok so what's your solution to keep the pins from coming out? is loctiting some pins really that hard?
  • 2 0
sometimes a little setup is required. a deraileur you have to adjust, forks, cut the steerer and such. most parts need a little adjustment for them to be good. usually pedals dont, but most of us a addicted to biking and wouldnt mind taking them apart and putting loc-tite on them. i know id enjoy it.
  • 2 0
There is a difference between "adjustment" and "taking steps to make sure it doesn't fall apart mid-ride". And I think my passion for riding can hardly be called into question over how much I want to dismantle a crappy part and put it back together.
  • 1 4
 they're shit
  • 5 2
ye rubbish over rated product, bent an axle on my first set on the first ride, lost pins, plates coming apart, dont waste your money, azonic, mde ..so many better pedals on the market.

I can understand the appeal of the looks, but I also agree that functionality should be a more important consideration.
A lot of people keep saying to use loctite etc amd tp replace the pins before using the pedals, but be honest, why the hell should you pay all that money for something if you can't use it straight from the box?.
Surely they should already have these things done to them before you get them.

50 50XX pedals are amazing, I have had a set on 3 different bikes over the last 3 years and they have taken a beating but still look awesome, have all it's original plates, TONNS of grip and still feel like the brand new set I just got for my DH bike. They are excellent, durable pedals that look cool on any bike.
  • 0 2
 you're clueless

 Having fun.
  • 2 0
Mine were decent for dj's but for dh i absolutely hated them. Those pins are the stupidest idea, no grip what so ever but when you replace them with the screw ones that you can order for them make them a lot better. My bearings have been pretty good, nothing to complain there. My biggest issue so far with them was when i first got them, i used loc-tight and checked to see how secure the bolts were, but even after every ride i would have to re-tighten them. I think it's cool that they want to have replaceable plates and different colors to make them cool and trendy but at the end of the day, i want a pedal thats not going to fall apart and keep my feet on the pedals.

My riding buddy picked up a set of the 5050XX just before the summer and it barely made it past this summer.

About two weeks from the date of this reply one of the pedals seized up and refused to spin; the inner bearing were shot.

He ordered the rebuild kit from the LBS which was about $20 (USD) but we were unable to get the damaged inner bearing out - it had fused itself into the body of the pedal!

He called Crank Brothers (which is about an hour North of us) and they said they would repair the pedal for free - he just needed to get the pedal to them. So he went up there yesterday and they got the damaged bearing out and basically rebuilt the pedal for him on the spot at no charge.

He said they were pretty cool people and he thinks that Brian Lopes was possibly in the house because he noticed a car out front with the plates "LOPES 55" on it. Smile

The one thing that I am disappointed on is the outer dust cap. It's made of some sort of hard plastic(?). We had a heck of a time trying to get one of them off and managed to round out the hole. We got the cap off by drilling it out.

Anyway, overall I think it's a pretty good pedal. I like the ability to change the plates but that alone is not enough for me to switch out my old-school Sun Ringle "Zu-Zu" pedals that I've had since 1999. Smile

1 of my mate got thease peddals on his bike when he bought it and one bought them for his bike and the both broke after a short peroiod of time and he really needed a pair of peddals fast so he got thease really cheap ones over hlaf the price and he prefered them. only thing i like about the 5050's are they look cool
  • 1 0
i bought my 50/50xx right when the first came out, first thing i did was loctite them and switch the pins to set screws, and i have never had any issued with them what so ever, thats almost 2.5-3 years of riding, they have great traction and the spin fine. i just replaced them with crankbrother mallets, and im gonna put the 50/50xx on my other bike now.
  • 1 0
what a stupid idea... let's introduce a pedal that can easily be a single piece, but no, we have to be retards and make it many pieces so you introduce the potential for more problems, like screws backing out on their own, or stripping out... terrible pedals...
  • 0 2
 you're right. they're shit
  • 1 0
The 50/50's are awesome pedals, but they come apart after about five minutes of riding. The screws that are supposed to hold the plates on are long gone and I now hold the pedals together with zip ties which last a lot longer than a set of screws
  • 0 1
yeah, that totally makes them awesome. get some truvativs
  • 1 0
These are amazing pedals but since switching to shimano dx's they have been 100 times better. The platform is amazing on the 50/50 pedals and if you put some DMR terror pins in them they would be the ultimate pedal imo. I might try it...........
  • 2 1
I cannot understand why people who bike refuse to look after their kit? I have a set of 50/50 XX and they are great pedals. I took them out of the box and did what I always do to parts that may work loose..threadlocked them. I have ridden them hard this season in all manner of weather (Aug- SNOW at Kicking Horse) and have not lost a pin or slipped on them.

They do what they say on the box, I have rode FUNN pedals before and for the price the bearings are rubbish, the 50/50's have sealed cartrige bearings and its a piece of piss to change them out (and to service them..if you groms know what tools are?)

In conclusion, LEARN HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR BIKE AND KIT!!

don't try and reason with me robbie seventhousandonehundredandtwentyseven, if that is your real name. i'm very unreasonable. they sell those pedals to us for a lot of fucking money. and then they fall apart on almost everyone who's ever had them, including me. You actually lose pieces of them riding, The bearings rot out in no time, and the stock pins are useless. then they cost more time and money to fix them so they even work or you could waste your time and money fixing them before you even ride them, that's another fucking retarded idea. i'm into maintaining shit on my bike that makes my bike ride better. not fixing shit that you shouldn't have to fix. quit swallowing the giant loads of jism that these assholes are ramming down your throat. If you don't put up with it, they won't get away with it life can be better, buy better pedals.
  • 0 0
I wasn't trying to reason with you, just as I don't try to reason with rocks or trees (both of which have a comparable I.Q to you) Do you have such a limited vocabulary that you have to resort to expletives to attempt to get heard? Didn't Mommy breastfeed you? Did Daddy not play ball enough with you?
You seem to be a very angry person, you have proved yourself 'stupid" with your comments yet you alleged that I was the stupid one for buying 50/50 pedals.
I would suggest you got a better paying job then you wouldn't be so concerned about $100 here or there.

Don't bother repying as I have better things to do that read your diatribe, Actually congratulations as I see YOUR reading level has improved as you managed to read what I wrote, or did someone have to help you with the big words?

you just stay in alberta. pedal kick your stupid ass all over town. and leave the real mountain biking to us. i can tell now why you've had no trouble with your pedals. you're not really a mountain biker. well maybe on the weekend sometimes.
  • 0 0
Bigtard, as for the pedals, it's your opinion dude. I like them personally. Call me stupid, whatever, I guess you are passionate about pedals... I hope your that passionate about Vag too.

I really hope that last comment there wasn't directed at me also. In no way shape or form am I a weekend warrior, and I'm not originally from Alberta. Some people may be, but lets think about mountain biking for a second "Mr. I live in Whistler". The true spirit of mountain biking is that you feel free whilst doing it, no matter how big/ or small you go, how often you ride, or why you ride. Get off your pedestal bro, where is the easy going B.C. attitude I know and love. You need to CHILL THE f*ck OUT. As for you robbie7127 you dug yourself a hole on this one bud, I agree with his Alberta biking comment whole heartily. -Go ride.
  • 0 1
How did I dig myself a hole? Have you looked at my profile and the different bikes I have, I ride DH AM and have just got into trials (as there is snow on the ground and can't ride the big bikes) My 50/50's are on my DH rig and I rode it most days this summer season with no issue.

I offered my opinion that IF you look after your kit there SHOULD be no problems, I out of habbit threadlock all parts that have the potential to work loose, I assumed this was a biking community standard? The 50/50's come out of the box needing the pins and plates attached, so there really isn't any more work to threadlock all the bits.

As for the Alberta biking community coment, I really don't know what you mean I have lived here for just over a year and have found the Alberta riders to be some of the most dedicated and friendly I have met (and yes I have rode all over Europe)
  • 0 0
150 dollar pedals shouldn't need anything to work good. in fact they should give you a hand job right out of the box. you can't honestly read this whole article, comments and all, and still believe those pedals are awesome. i've been around long enough to know, which bike parts aren't worth wasting my time on. however, pink bike. that shit is worth wasting time on

I haven't ridden these, but I have seen a TON of pedal rebuild kits sold for all Crank Bros. pedals. For me that was a sign to stay away.

I'm very happy with my DMR V12's - I have 3 pair - at 432g they're light and the pins are very grippy + they sell Pimp My Pedal kits with 4 colors of pins and pedal end caps. Dope.

iv had 2 pairs of 5050X and both sets broke, now got a pair of V8s and they are so much better, simple and do what they are suppost 2 do with out anything unnessary
  • 0 0
yer totaly agree with the above comment man i have then and let me say all u have to do to keep them happy is take them off once in a while give them a oil and leave them a few days then stick them back on my set up is that i have 5 pins at the back of the peddle this is just my style i find if my foot does come off its due to slipping a peddle so that why i set them up that way
  • 0 0
These babies are "all show no go" unfortunately... I have owned two sets, and the bearings seized in a couple months on each. Even with regular maintenance and packing them full of grease, the seals and bearings are total crap.
  • 0 0
ya same with me i hated them for the time that i had them the plates fell out and the bearings got all messed up with in a month they were the xx model.
not my favortie pedal ever no i ride the axiom road gaps they are amazing pedal 1 year strong and still in prime shape + its a one peice pedal.
  • 0 0
Shuggles- "The 50/50's are awesome pedals, but they come apart after about five minutes of riding."
Wow, talk about low expectations. Kinda like "I had a bike, sickest bike ever, but it broke after one lap". I got an old Norco Kokanee you might want to pay me top dollar for.
I've had DMR's for 4 years, 3 bikes, well over 100 laps in the Whistler bike park. $65...
  • 0 0
THEY SUCK!! I tried them for 1 day, a muddy day, and they just dont grip. Not even on 5.10. I had the Atomlab Aircorp, and changed to this...Bad decision. The atomlab has way more grip. Best platform I ever rode, but their bushing sistem sucks. Now I upgraded my 5050xx with more pins, so I hope that now they will grip...
  • 0 0
Bottom Line: If I can buy quality pedals at half that price, and not worry about bearings, axels, pins, and bullshit then do it. I have never seen so many comments, Maybe pinkbike got paid to write the review...Probably did which would explain the posistive feedback. I'm going with the hundreads of people who bashed the pedals there opinon is un bias and relaible.
  • 0 0
You know, honestly, they can be great for custominzing the pins and their positions. I have mine with the extra long pins on the sides and medium pins in the middle. My feet almost never come off the pedals. They had so much grip that I actually got hung up a little every now and then until I got used to them. However, the pedal bolts AND the pins DO need to be locktited and let be to set up. I also lost a couple of plate bolts until I did this. Crank Bros did send me replacements and a bunch of pins at no cost to make up for this. So, in the end, I am one very happy 50/50XX customer.
  • 0 0
Not a bad deal if you shop around. Got my XX's for 65 bucks by shopping around and getting one shop to beat a competitors already low price. Yeah, anyone who pays $120 for these should be choked. For that price I'd go for some Brooklyn Machine Works Shin burgers and veggie burgers. They're next on my list of these fail. But, I'm also a masochist and have it in for my shins.
  • 5 4
I love how all these people with problems don't know how to solve them before they occur, learn to use tools before spending any money on a decent set of pedals... Learn to use loctite too.
  • 9 3
seriously? you think that after spending 130, we should be concerned with loc-titing our pedals...

wow, what a silly concept...

my speedplay pedals NEVER have come apart and i never used loctite on them... what brilliance must that be! it's cause they're not retardedly screwed together... one piece platform pedals are superior in EVERY way
  • 5 0
Agreed. They should build them right in the first place. Would you want to have to dismantle your frame and replace all the pivot bearings (as an example) before your first ride to make sure it didn't fall apart?
  • 1 3
 you compare a 2-hour task to a 5-minute task.
  • 8 1
ok, how about another example then... would you like your frame to have interchangeable tubes so you can be creative with colours? the bolts holding your frame together back out from time to time, but don't worry, you can loctite it...
  • 3 2
agreed. Loctite would have been the solution. I wish I would have thought about it before that first ride. I guess I never considered having to "pre-fix" a brand new bike part. Lesson learned.
  • 2 1
i would of thought for that price they would have loctite in them from factory like disk bolts do
  • 2 2
They do come from the factory with blue thread locker on them. Proves you know what your talking about, you have probably never owned a pair...
  • 2 1
You would think that if they came from the factory with the thread locker on them, then they would stay locked. Hmmm? There is a design flaw when the plates come out because of the tiny stock screws that they think are going to hold them in. I don't remember if there was any thread locker on them, but if there was, it failed. I didn't ride them long enough to have the bearings wear out, but I know plenty of people who have. They came stock on my Diablo, but I guess I don't know what I am talking about. Right?
  • 1 1
I was talking to bigburd... misunderstanding.
  • 2 0
There isn't enough loctite on them from the factory. And in response from the smart arse talking about stripping a frame down to loctite the bolts, in some cases you DO need to strip down pivot bolts and bearings to regease and loctite them properly, I won't mention any manufacturers here. FYI I work at a respectable bike shop.

"pre-fixing" a brand new part is retarded. unless you specifically bought the part knowing you were gonna modify it (slamming a seat-post for example). i think most things outta the factory that come preassembled should be ready to go. maybe checking a couple screws and bolts on a brand new dual suspension frame isn't bad for safe measures, but going as far as loc-titing the pegs on brand new pedals is ridiculous. the company should learn how to use screws correctly. or maybe, since your paying $130 for the pedals, loc-titing it before they send them out.
  • 1 1
then 'enduro06' why are they still failing? surely if they are from factory loctited this problem would not occur . And no I have never owned a pair your right but a few of my close riding buddies have and i've took them apart and studyed them my self so i'm perfectly right to make comments upon them
  • 1 4
 they're shit
  • 1 1
okay the plate -bolts do loosen but with super glue or indeed LOCKTITE there is no problem..one time lost a plate..but you hear it fall Wink
i run these for trials with all the pins in.. still they do slip in the wet.. why i dont know..
i crashed threw my crank in a marmer floor.. kinked behind a stair.
still almost no play in them not bend or what ever.. good peddals !!
to all you wankers > ALL peddals LOOSE pins..! ! (one time or another)

these blow. my bearings went out in half a season; and at the races CB wants like 10 buck for the good pics b/c the ones that come on them are horrible.

also over priced.

i got the blackspire big slims and those have been great

this short list of pro's and con's tell me to stay away from those pedals.
I don't use them simply because I don't like platform pedals, I use Time Z's. I have had them for three years now, beat the piss out of them yet they continue to roll as smooth as butter. We have sold some bikes that came with those Crank Bros. All of them have seen the plates come off. They really need to fix the design or just take it off the market. Being able to switch the colors around is all fine and dandy but when you're product is constantly falling apart, it's time to go back to the drawing board. Many people talk about having to mess with them before they go into use. huh? really now, that shouldn't be the protocol - pedals should work RIGHT, right out of the box. Suspension forks and brakes, sure, that's a product you'd want to make adjustments to before using, not pedals --- specially not platform. Install and Go!! Not, install, mess with, hope they don't fall apart, repair, replace...
  • 1 3
What a concept..... A shop that had 50's on the bikes they sold. It would be a shame for them to toss a little time and effort into throwing some Loctite other than medium strength 248, onto the pedals to keep them from falling apart.

Here is a simple guideline to gain maximum awesomeness for you 50's experience:

Step 1: Pull pedals out of nifty box;

Step 2: Decide which holes, how many pins and how much thread engagement you would like to be used for pin placement;

Step 3: Grab allen key, Green Loctite expanding compound;

Break: Sip beverage, grab a bag of Cheetos, change song on stereo;

Step 4: Apply compound to set screws and thread into pedal body;

Step 5: Apply compound to pedal plates edges and slide into pedal body;

Step 6: Apply more compound to plate retaining fasteners and thread in;

Break: Again sip on beverage, stuff face with cheesy goodness, rock out to Rise Against;

Step 7: Make sure all fasteners are snug, let pedals sit overnight allowing for Loctite compound to expand and cure;

Step 8: Throw the stylish, grippy, efin awesome pedals on your crank arms, and step back and admire the style you just blasted your rig with;

Step 9: Ride the piss out of those pedals for many seasons;

Disclaimer: 50/50 pedals are not indestructible, nor are you, nor is any other pedal, they may break, seize, and tolerances in bearings will grow with wear and tear. If you don't like it, go buy some budget friendly Welgo pedals or something.

 tehee enduro06 you're silly
  • 2 2
 How about

Step 1: Pull pedals out of nifty box
Step 2: take pictures and put up Ebay ad
Step 3: Hope some sucker buys them
Step 4: Take the money you get and buy 2 sets of Wellgo MG-1's and live happily ever after for the next 3 or 4 seasons.
  • 1 0
or instead of buying them in the first place and going through that whole process, just get the other pedals

got them on ebay and paid 50$ ,im satified whit the result the give

errr ahh, you wonder why you got them for $50??????
  • 0 0
These pedals are garbage, the stock pins dont even grip and if you actually ride them hard the screws holding the plated together just fall out causing the plates to "just fall off". If i'm getting a pedal i dont want something i have to f*ck with, put it on and ride it. none of this locktite bots in and change pins BS. worst pedals i have owned hands down. you want a sick pair of pedals, check out the block 8 mags or many others out there.
  • 1 1
Lots of my buds had these and every one was pissed at them cause they kept failing and wearing out after a very short time. I have been running the same set of Straitline pedals for 2.5 YEARS with all the original pins and a total of 20 minutes servicing the bushings twice, once per year.
  • 0 0
yeah, I have the cheaper ones, I haven't had a problem yet. i rode bromont and saint anne and my local trails. they haven't come loose and they haven't gone wrong at all. Only problem is that they are very slippery in the wet. Thats not a big deal at all. I slap on my 510 high impact shoes and they stick like glue. My buddy clint came into a problem though. the screws fell out and the plates were sliding out. He is a heavier set guy than me but he doesn't ride as hard. Oh well, every company has their lemons. All in all I love them. Soo cool Ride and Be

"They grip like a nun giving her first handjob (you have to buy some set screws from a bolt whole seller, as the stock studs have no grip)"

this makes no sense? you are saying they have great grip, but you had to replace the stock pins with set screws from a bolt supplier first (at your cost, after buying the pedals), as the stock pins had no grip?

if they designed the pedals properly in the first place, you would not being travelling to bolt suppliers to "remedy" this huge design flaw

easily the best pedals I have used are Syncros' Mental Alloy pedals...lighter than DMR V-12s and insanely tough / grippy

after 2.5 YEARS of riding (all over the UK in mud and rain, Whistler, North Shore in Vancouver, dirt jumping, etc.) I just had to rebuild them with new "o" ring seals and some grease on the inner DU bushing as they had started squeaking a little when pedalling, the cartridge bearing and needle roller bearing were still 100% smooth and still greased with original blue marine factory grease

50/50 = wing wong Wink
  • 3 0
Reading comprehension is a virtue for you.

The stock chrome plated studs provide no grip, true. You can buy a tacky pin kit(most pedal sets come with them though, the black set screws...) with the crank brothers logo on the baggy, or, go to a separate vendor "a bolt supplier" and purchase set screws for a mere fraction of of the cost. I paid $4.10 for a box of 100 set screws. The set from Crank Brothers happens to be $22. All in all there isn't much traveling involved and it isn't really a hassle for a bit of style on your ride.

You think there is a design flaw, well that's your opinion. I think they are awesome, I have ridden them for two seasons now,(mud, snow, rain, Williams lake, Kamloops, Invermere, Whistler....so on and so forth the list goes forever) not one problem. Cheers! Hope you enjoy those Syncros stomps, I hear they are pretty stellar.

  • 0 0
Okay 50/50 suck shouldnt have to loctite them outta the boxs so they dont fall apart (thats shit to me) not so light pedals with shit grip the best way i found to use them was loctite all the bolts holding the plates on, get new pins from a bolt company loctite those things in to, then rap the damn things in skate board grip tape.......all in all after that Pretty decent pedal but not for the price id rather spend 120$ on some nice FUNN SOLJAM VIPERS (in my opinion best platform out there) i run them on my scythe and well feels like im clipped in
  • 0 0
Oh and i must add my soljam vipers are from 2002 same ole sealed bearings still going strong I rode them hard in BC for 5 years then moved here and still running them not a problem with them no play only thing i did was re-grip tape the center cause it wore down and replaced 5 pins
  • 0 0
i've had 3 pairs of the XX models, and they all suck, mind you i'm useing for extreme dh and i weigh in at around 225,but i would never buy another set,i've actually gone with a SYNCROS ss pedel, which is definatly heavier than the 50/50 and no replaceable pins, but i have never had to replace any pins on my 50/50's once in the last 2 years so i don't think that'll be a problem
  • 0 1
 i love taco's too

generic review... you could put any pedal name in place of it and it would read the same. These pedals are over priced and a poor design. I wanted to like them, i really did, they look really cool! but I have seen too many fail and heard to many bad reviews that I would steer clear.
  • 2 2
my friends sunday came with them and before he even left the shop he the shop to change the pedals to a set of DMR v12's. he went after to go throw them in the garbage i walked up grabbed em threw them on my bike im just riding on a side walk and i hear a clang clang clang and the right side pedal fell appart. i threw my other pedals on (v8's)i grab wat parks i can see shove em in my bag. wen i get home i put them back together and posted them on ebay and get 80$ for themBig Grin i feel sry for the sukker who got them........

i've tried those pedals for street and they suck! stock pins do not hold your feet at all... plates coming loose... they kinda look cool, but they cost way too much!! i've been using Tiogas for a year and finally got Deity Decoys!!! Deitys are some sweeetest pedals out there!!! really thin, lots of grip (i'm not thinking 5.10 any more :-)) and they cost around $80!!!
  • 1 1
DO NOT BUY THESE PEDALS!!! The worst pedals I ever owned! Super slippery. the pins suck.To top it off, the bearings seized three times!!! too much matinence. Too expensive.Do these guys even test the product? I never comment on anything but had to on this one! Total crap!!!!
  • 0 0
i have these and they have not ever fallin apart on me because like normal people you learn how to use a tool and they cant be that shit since i have seen them on sam hill's bike at mt saint anne giv me neg props if you want but i think they are great and have you ever thought dnt buy walmart shoes to ride in and you will get gripp :/
  • 1 0

exactly, all as it takes is one harsh crash and u rip this pedals in half, so u cant sit there and defend this crap product, but if u don't ride hard enough to crash u just arn't pushin it. I guess these pedals are great for pussy riding, so have fun until u fuck them up!!
  • 0 1

A buddy of mine has these on his bike, my feet just feel awkward on them and the pedals feel small. I run $25 Easterns and love them; awesome colors, cheap, and I've had mine for 6 months with no problems.
  • 1 1
I have been running a set of 50/50xx's for a couple seasons now. No slippage, no bearing problems, just perfect. I love them. I even picked up a second set for the dj bike.
  • 1 1
i personaly think these pedals suck. thats just me thought. ive heard way too manny bad things about these pedlas and the only good thing ive heard is that they look so sweet. i ride with wellgo B67 pedals and love them.
  • 0 1
wellgos have zero grip hella light tho maybe 4 dj..
  • 0 0
theses ones have massive spikes and are concave
  • 1 2
THESE SUCK BALLS!!!! I ride would rather ride with cheap ass $5.00 welgo's over these peices of crap.

When they were brand new I didn't locktight the plates and I lost all my screws in one 5 min run down the mountian. They should get rid of the stupid interchangeable plates and try and make a reliable pedal instead of making them look pretty.

They are noisey, slippery even with all the pegs in and not worth the $120.00 that i paid for them. I wouldn't suggest these pedals to anyone.
If you want a real set of pedals I would suggest Easton Flatboys or Straightline pedals. The Eastons are a bit soft in the axel department but feel amazing compared to the 50/50's..
  • 0 0
I work in a bike shop and these pedals are crap. Every pair we sell come back with major axle play/movement after 6 months. Stay away. S&M 101's and azonic a frames are much better and cheaper
  • 1 0
replaced them with dmr v12s and never looked back. They sit on my desk missing pins and screws and making good paper weights. pretty pedal , leave them at home.
  • 1 1
HINT When you buy these flats, buy the extra pin set and put them all in before you even put them on your bike !!!! Then again, I'd like the new Azonic flats, weigh nothing and are SO nice

I didn't have the XX version. I must have got the cheap POS version. Half a season and all the pin fell out, one bearing was completely shot. High maintenance pedals. But again, I bought the budget pair.
  • 0 2
the good version is just as shitty. at least you didn't spend as much money on them
  • 0 0
558g for a pair of flats is really not that light... shop around and you can find lighter, better pedals for cheaper...

doesn't weight your bike down? ya, maybe when i take them off cause they suck such hard balls...
  • 0 0
Over designed. Pins fell out and plates lossened with smooth riding. Good bearings but there are too many proper pedals on the market too deal with this kind of nonsense. My Time Atac Carbons from 2006 are tougher!!!
  • 0 0
I have the aftermarket pins, with loctite, and guess what, they unscrew, and get pushed in, of fall out still. Loctite works with the separate plates, but no luck for me with the screws.
  • 4 0

  • 1 0
100% agree straitlines are WAY better and for some reason my post got deleted!! meh well
  • 0 1
my freind used those for his dj bike and the plate's separated from the body
and i personally think they have next to no grip (the 50/50x that is) and $90 is way overpriced for non sealed bearing pedals
heavy too, 558g and 618g
personally, i'd rather have mg-1's with ti axle.

aparently they have gotton alot of business...everyone know what their peddles are like ..i had a pair..the plates snapped out..fixed with zipties..nice

I find this review really bad, and definitely not up to PB's usual standards.

Heres mine:

These pedals are just not worth the money.
  • 0 1
Hey bigtard, what makes me so clueless on pedals that I have used for over 3 years??? Have you ever even tried them or are you just going off what one of your friends told you after he saw a pair on someone elses bike? Ignorant!
  • 0 0
believe me, i'm not ignorant. i know stuff, lots of stuff. read all the other posts on this bullshit article and you can't see for yourself that these pedals have some serious problems. Serious crap problems that no other pedal has. how can that make them good. shitty bearings, shitty fall apart design, shitty no grip pins, and shitty price. sounds like shit to me. you must be very lucky, or you probably ride like the girl who wrote the article in the first place. pull your head out of your ass
  • 0 0
Wow! simmer down player, by the sounds of things I must do a hell of a lot more riding than you as you seem too busy shooting off your mouth about stuff you've never even tried. If you actually knew anything about this stuff you would know that you've gotta take these reviews with a bucket of salt.
  • 0 0
believe me, i've tried them. just long enough to know they're shit. then i watched shitloads of them fall apart on my friends and other people. up yours anyways

  • 0 0
no no, don't worry about my riding. i'm sure you couldn't catch me. and the pedals don't break, they just fall apart and suck all at the same time. go do some more duet backflips out of the bowl you tard
  • 0 1
i think the only people who would say that 50/50 XX pedals are good are:

1)lightweight riders
2)people who are just street riding/dj ing/urban assault
3)people who like "the look" all fancy shcmancy
4)all the wannabe mountain bikers. ie. has the killerest ride, but doesn't even know how to ride.

i have had 3 pairs of the XX pedels over the last 2 years, and they are shitty pedals for the price.at the price they charge for them, there should be no problems.shouldn't have to locktight em. i have been riding for over 20 years and this is the first pedel that has ever needed to be locktighted.

also their headsets suck!

 and dumb people
  • 1 3
I love them. Simply one of the best pedals I have owned through the years. The plates do separate, but that can be fixed by putting some green Loctite expanding compound along the seams. It holds the pedals together no matter what.
  • 1 2
they are the best pedals you have ever owned yet you compound them together for them to function ? the other pedals you used must of been REAL crap , like exploding into a thousand peices or some thing like that
  • 2 3
So, whats the big deal here. I use these pedals, I like em, you don't. They grip like a nun giving her first handjob (you have to buy some set screws from a bolt whole seller, as the stock studs have no grip), and I got some plates to match the color scheme of my ride. Fricken sweet, thanks for sharing your half witted opinion with me.... I'm not some Grom that got mommy to buy a nice new set of pedals for me. As for the pedals exploding into a thousand pieces, sure, it can happen, but there are only approx. 46 parts in one pedal.... So you must be hucking some benderishly scary drops to smash them that good. I read the reviews, did my research before I bought them, it took me no time to Loctite them so they wouldn't fall apart(I watched a bike flick, slammed a few adult beverages while doing it). All the (most likely) kids on here saying they just want a turn-key pedal, are probably the kids bringing their bikes into a shop for a minor repair and walking away having spent $500 of mum and pops cash due to lack of maintenance. I have many other brands of pedals, none in which out performs the other by any wild stretch of the imagination. The only thing they all have in common is the great feeling of gouging my calf and shin, which I have yet to experience with my 50's(at this point I knocked on wood, because that would suck). I don't know about you, I take pride in my rig, I take the time to make sure she is in top notch condition after every ride. Since I take the time to do that then I don't mind "gluing" my wicked awesome looking pedals together so they last. As far as I am concerned Crank Bros has a sweet pedal here boys and girls, sure they take a little bit of TLC to keep them on the up and up. What part on your bike doesn't require some TLC every once in awhile. -Go ride.
  • 1 1
Did you just read what you wrote?! "you have to buy some set screws from a bolt whole seller, as the stock studs have no grip" WHAT? I'm gonna go and pay 130 bucks for these "top-of-the-line" pedals and then I have to go pay MORE at some out of the way bolt store? I don't think so.
I OWN these pedals, they suck. It is not a five minute job to re-do all the loctite and change out the bolts. It is a tedious, time-consuming (read: wasting) task that should not have to be done to a pedal unless it's encountered an immovable object or is old. But I had to do this on brand new pedals?! No thanks.
Geez people, I got these as a gift. I was very happy when I got them, but now I'm over it. You do not have to defend these pedals as if you owe them something. Just come to the same realization that I did: These pedals are a scam, they suck, and there are many dozens of other models available that are cheaper and perform better.

  • 0 0
Another riding buddy of mine said basically the same thing. When he first got the 5050XX pedal he tried various shoes and found that the 5TEN seemed to be the best.

He also mentioned that his pins fell out - and it did after the first time out! He used the other pins that came with the pedal and used red loctite and they've never came off ... yet...

My other riding buddy, the one I mention above, just bought a pair of 661 shoes and this weekend will be the first real ride with the new shoes and rebuilt pedals so we'll see how that goes.

Does anyone know how well this pedal grips in really wet and muddy conditions?

ive been running theese pedlals for a while, the xx version wich has a significant difference from the x version, sealed bearing and longer pins, there great pedals, totally customizable and they look and grip great, nothing to complain about at all..i put locktite on the pins and i filled every hole with pins and on 2 pins have come out and thats from banging them on rocks. i think there pretty light to like 500 grams a pair im not sure though

i guess you user name reflects your intellegence bigtard, you really shouldnt bash on them if you havent even used them for a decent amount of time. there great pedals and yeah some people have problmes with them but hey SHIT BREAKS. you also got to keep in mind that were talking about the 5050xx model wich has sealded bearings and a differnt pin set. the 5050x model is lower quality and has ball bearings and a shorter pin set..there is a differnce between the two so im asuming many people get them mixed up.

Dude I agree. Even I have CrankBros 5050-X. They were f*cked up within few months. So i got them replaced by paying international shipping. And even the new ones are behaving crazy!
Im not sure how 50-50XX work. But the guys at Crankbrothers told me that 50-50XX Can be rebuilt by replacing catridge. But tht option is not available in 50-50X. That really sux! They just look good what i believe now ( X i mean) dont know about XX.
